Rumble stared a the ticking clock, waiting for class to end and recess to begin. He had been cooped up inside a hot classroom all day and couldn't wait to go out into the cool air. Finally the bell rung and all of the fillies ran out the door and into the school yard. Rumble flew out into the yard and softly landed on the grass. He took a deep breath of the fresh air.
"Hey Rumble, you wanna play hoof ball?" Applebloom shouted from across the field, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo standing next to her. Rumble ran over towards them and grabbed the ball.
They tossed the balled back and forth until a loud squeaking noise made Rumble turn his head. A small, rusty wagon filled with books squeaked loudly on the smooth pavement. Rumble looked closer to try to see who was pulling the wagon.
On closer inspection it was revealed to see Spike pulling the wagon. Ms. Cheerilee greeted him at the door. Rumble watched them as they chatted.
His face grew red and his mouth went dry. His heart pounded loudly.
"Has he always had wings? Has he always looked so cute? Why am I staring at him? His lips look so soft. I just want to-" Rumble's thoughts got cut off with a ball hitting him on the side of the head.
"Ow! What was that for!?" Rumble shouted while clutching his head. "We called you like ten times and you didn't answer." Scootaloo said while bouncing the ball. "Are you okay, your face is really red." Sweetie belle asked while putting her hoof on his shoulder.
Rumble harshly pushed her away before running of in the opposite direction. He ran until he reached behind the school house. He backed up against the wall and put his hoof on his chest. His heart was racing.
"Why did I do that? Why is my face so red? Why is my heart beating so fast? Do I have a crush on him? No of course not, that's silly." Rumble thought to himself. He sat in silence for a few minutes before speaking out loud. "Is it silly?"
Rumble stared at his desk as Ms. Cheerilee lectured about something boring that Rumble couldn't even remember. He was to busy thinking about how great Spike looked. Rumble could already feel his face heating up. Spike's piercing green eyes, his shining purple and green scales, the way he smiled. He was perfect.
"RUMBLE!" Ms. Cheerilee shouted making him snap out of his daze. He looked up to see the whole class was staring at him. His face turned a darker shade of red (if that was even possible). Ms. Cheerliee made her way over to him. When she approached him she put her hoof on his forehead.
"Rumble your burning up, go home and get some rest." Ms. Cheerliee said while handing Rumble his bag. He took his bag and walked between the desk. He felt all of the filies staring at him as he walked down the aisle.
When Rumble made his way outside he heard the door close behind him. He flew into the air letting the wind blow through his hair and clearing his head. It felt fantastic. He came to a halt when his stomach growled. He looked around for somewhere he could get food. His eyes landed at Sugarcube Corner. He was happy that he had a few bits today.
Rumble landed in front of Sugarcube Corner and trotted inside. He approached the counter where Mrs. Cake was standing. Her attention snapped over to Rumble when she spotted him.
"What can I get for you dearie?" Mrs. Cake asked sweetly. Rumble looked around before speaking. "I'll get a brownie with extra nuts." Rumble said while taking off his bag. He rummaged through it until he found four bits and placed them on the counter. Mrs. Cake nodded her head and went into the kitchen.
Rumble turned around to quickly only to bump into someone, knocking him on the ground. "Oh I'm sorry, are you okay?"
The voice sounded familiar. Rumble looked up in shock to see Spike was standing there. He instantly froze in place before quickly standing up. "Oh yeah I'm uh I'm fine- perfectly great." Rumble stammered out. "Well that's good I don't want you to get hurt." Spike said making Rumble's face turn a light shade of pink. "Yeah um well you know what they say about hurting people. You can only do it once." Rumble jumbled up into a mess of a sentence. He mentally facepalmed at his stupidity.
Spike chuckled lightly making Rumble's heart burst out of his chest. Rumble searched for something to say to keep the convsersation going. "So I see that you got wings, how did that happen?" Rumble asked. Spike smiled widely making Rumble's heart flutter. "Oh well it all started when-" As Spike told the story, Rumble gazed at him lovingly.
"I love you." Rumble said with a sigh. Spike froze in shock as his face started turning a deep shade of red. "W-what." Spike said blushing profusely. Rumble snapped out of his daze. "D-did I say that out loud?" Rumble stuttered as his face burned. He felt tears well up in his eyes. "Why did I say that out loud, I'm so stupid, He probably thinks I'm a weirdo." Rumble thought as he felt tears dripping down his face. Mrs. Cake emerged from the kitchen with his brownie in a bag. "Here you go dearie." She said handing him the paper bag.
Rumble quickly took the bag and started to head towards the door. Spike quickly chased after him calling after Rumble. "Rumble wait!" Spike shouted but he didn't turn back. Rumble flew straight into the sky as fast as he could. His tears blurred his vision and his wings burned. Rumble landed in front of his house and quickly burst through the door.
He ran inside and flopped face first into the couch. Rumble let out a loud sob into the pillow. For once he was grateful that Thunderlane wasn't home and was at the Wonderbolts Academy training. Rumble turned to the paper bag with his food in it. He had lost his appetite and pushed the bag away.
"How could I be so stupid? Why did I say that out loud? He hate's me now and won't ever want to see or talk to me again. " Rumble questioned to himself. "Why do I even care, it's not like I have a crush on him or anything."
Rumble laid on the couch thinking about Spike. How cute he was, his smile, his laugh. "I'm in love with him." Rumble muttered to himself before hiding his face into the pillow. He laid there for what felt like an enternity, before dozing off into a dreamless sleep.
Rumble awoke to the sound of the doorbell ringing loudly. He groaned, not wanting to get off of the soft couch. "If I ignore them they'll go away." Rumble thought to himself. Much to his disappointment the bell kept ringing. "Fine I'm coming hold you horses!" Rumble shouted as he headed towards the door.
He swung the door open in annoyance wondering who could be bothering him at three in the afternoon. As soon as the door opened Rumble froze in shock and fear. Spike stood at the door holding Rumble's bag in his hands. "You left your bag in Sugarcube Corner and I wanted to give it back." Spike said shyly, handing him his bag. Rumble snatched it from him as his face burned a deep shade of red.
"Thank you." Rumble muttered before trying to close the door in Spike's face. Spike put his arm out before the door could close. "Rumble wait." Spike said while walking inside. Rumble turned away from him, hoping he would leave.
"Look, I know you're really upset right now but I just want you to know that I really like you." Spike said nervously. "I've liked you since I saw you cheering in the crowd at the Equestria games. You looked so cute cheering for your brother." He continued. "It's fine if you don't like me back I just wanted to tell you." When Rumble didn't answer Spike dejectedly walked towards the door.
Before Spike could reach the door Rumble harshly pulled back inside. A pair of lips met his. His heart fluttered. It felt as they were both floating. Rumble broke the kiss as his face burned.
"Woah" Spike said softly. It felt like fireworks were going off in his stomach. "I like you to you idiot." Rumble said with tears of happiness streaming down his face. Spike grinned widely making Rumble chuckle softly.
Spike grabbed Rumble and kissed him deeply. Now Rumble was finally happy to be with his new boyfriend.
