Prologue: Only One Choice
Pain and exhaustion eroded her body. The poison had begun its work several hours ago, and though she continued at a steady pace, every hoof step had been a concerted, deliberate effort. Her wings no longer had the strength to lift her up, and her horn could no longer produce even the smallest spark of magic, let alone enough to shield her from the frigid rain pouring down on her.
It had been calm and sunny for days, then the storms appeared as quickly as light dies when one blows out a candle. Such was the chaotic and unstable nature of the world, one minute, sweltering heat, the next, a raging blizzard. She had never gotten used to it, and now suspected she’d never get a chance to. They might...but she had to find shelter, somewhere safe, somewhere she could hide long enough to brew an antidote and...hopefully...give her body a chance to beat the damned poison.
She stumbled and fell, landed on her hands and knees, then vomited several mouthfuls of blood. At the same time she felt a pain in her head. About a mile back she’d laid a node with the last of her magic, to alert her when her pursuers reached it. How could they have caught up so fast? Even in her weakened state, she hadn’t expected them to reach that node for several more hours...and the blood. Her mouth was filled with the taste of her own blood, the poison was also travelling much faster than expected. She trembled, tears mixing with the blood and rain streaming down her face.
“I’m sorry” she said aloud, turning to look at the two bundles tied to her back, “I’m so sorry,”
The sound of movement. Panic produced adrenaline and she jumped back up. It came from just beyond the treeline to her left. Her pursuers? No, someone else. She hid behind a tree, and observed two ponies. A mare and a stallion, Unicorn and Pegasus respectively. They had a small bundle of their own, but they dug a hole, and laid their bundle carefully beneath the earth. The Unicorn used her magic, making grass and Dandilions grow, covering the spot, so no one would ever know it was there. The two ponies held each other and wept. She could hardly bare to watch.
The rain fell heavier, the wind blew fiercely, and the couple was forced to retreat. She followed and watched as the Unicorn caused the bark of a large tree to swing inwards, they both disappeared inside, likely to a hiding place underground, warm, safe. The bark swung back hiding the entrance again. She leaned against a nearby tree and wept.
Curse the fates. Damn the gods. To Tartarus with whatever force keeps the cosmos spinning. Why? It was all too perfect...and unfair. Why should theirs’ have to die, just so her’s could live?
She didn’t have long left, she could feel the end approaching inside, and her enemies were close behind. So close. Had they found a way to track her? The poison itself? It was possible. She could stay and use whatever time she had to explain personally, but she couldn’t risk the chance that her pursuers would find all of them…..There was only one choice.
