“Tell me!”
Cadance sighed. “Okay. It looks like the spell can't be reversed by any outside force ... it has to keep going until it runs out of energy and reverses all on its own.”
“And how long does that take?”
Looking back into her book, Cadance ran her finger down along the pertinent section of the page. “Well, it depends on your age and weight, the phase of the moon and how many days there are until the next equinox, and then I have to account for the fact that I'm an alicorn, not a unicorn like this book was written for, so the initial energy of the spell would have been higher...”
“How long? ” Gleaming took a desperate step forward, coming closer to Cadance, even though she had no idea what she'd do if she got there.
“Just a moment, dear. Calm down.” Cadance tapped her fingers together and stared off into space, mentally calculating.
'Calm down'? Gleaming's legs twitched, and she would have paced again if she could have done so without looking away from Cadance for even a moment. Come on! How was she supposed to be calm in a situation like this?
“About two days and six hours,” Cadance finally said, closing the book and setting it aside.
“Two days? ” Gleaming's mouth gaped open, her eyes cringing in disbelief.
Cadance nodded slowly. “And six hours.”
“Ugh!” Gleaming threw herself down onto the bed, face first. “I can't do this! I can't stay cooped up in this room for two whole days with nothing to do!” Her voice was muffled by the sheets, but clear enough to understand.

Cadance smiled and shook her head. “Oh you... You have such a weird idea of what a 'vacation' is. But I don't see why that wouldn’t work, if that's what you want to do. Any new recruit with a letter of recommendation from the Princess of the Crystal Empire and the former Captain of the Royal Guard should have no problem getting placement with the Canterlot Palace unit. Everypony knows that they're mostly just ceremonial.”
“Hey! ” Gleaming pouted.
“Oh, shush. You know it's true.”
Gleaming rolled her eyes. “How am I going to get a letter of recommendation from my former self, anyway?”
Giving her a playful slap on the rump, Cadance laughed a little. “Getting turned into a mare didn't change your handwriting, did it? Are you going to tell me that you can't replicate that special flair on your signature without holding your penis in your other hand?”
“Oh.” Gleaming blinked at her. “Right.”
Getting up from the bed, Cadance pulled Gleaming along by the hand behind her. “Come on. It's time to give you a makeover!”

“No, dear. You'll need to figure out how to do it for yourself if you're going to live as a mare for a couple days. Go on, give it a try. It isn't complicated.”

She fumbled with the straps, trying to worm her arms through them; she held the cups up to her breasts, then started over again and again because the cups would fall off before she could get the straps on; and she cursed at the infernal contraption when she somehow popped one of the shoulder straps completely off ... but she did finally get it in place. Little did either of them know at the time, but Gleaming was going to have quite a bit more 'fun' in Canterlot than anyone anticipated.

First Lieutenant Steel Sabre frowned a little as he perused Gleaming Shield's application paperwork, laid neatly out on the large wooden desk in front of him. “This is all highly irregular.”
Gleaming stood rigidly at attention in front of the desk. The Lieutenant had never given the 'at ease' command. So she barely dared move a muscle. “My apologies, Sir. But everything should be in order.”
“Yes, yes...” He glanced over the paperwork again, his eyes coming to rest on the letter of recommendation and its shiny royal seal. “It seems we will have to make a small exception to our normal routines.”
“Thank you, Sir!”
His frown deepened at this show of enthusiasm. Gleaming knew that it was just short of what could be written up as breaking military bearing. When the Lieutenant spoke again, it was with a hint of venomous pleasure: “Luckily, the female guards' morning training regimen is just now beginning. I do think Captain Everwatch will appreciate the opportunity to put you through your paces and see what you have to offer the Royal Guard. Of course, you'll need to hurry. I hear she's particularly harsh on fresh recruits who show up late.” He grinned evilly. “Be sure to stop by Supply and pick up a training uniform. But don't take too long!”

Gleaming had rushed her brand new uniform vouchers to the supply desk, in a hurry to get to training on time. She had no desire to be that recruit – showing up late and unannounced. She sure knew how she would treat a fresh recruit back in her days as Guard Captain.
Unfortunately, the rush had meant she didn't check the sizes of what she'd been issued. And she really should have.
She stood and stared at it now – a simple white T-shirt and a pair of running shorts that would be skimpy enough even if they were the right size. But as it was now, they were at least two sizes too small. Could she even fit in these?
Glancing up at the clock on the locker room wall, she knew she didn't have time to go back to supply and argue about getting different sizes. She had to try.
It still felt weird being in the mares' locker room. She'd opened the door and nearly walked into the stallion's room automatically before stopping herself at the last moment. Luckily, nopony had been there to see that screw-up. And it helped that there was no one else in the mare's locker room, either. They must all be forming up for training already. She carefully stowed her guard uniform in an empty locker; she just had to trust that none of the other guards would take it, since she didn't have a lock yet. “Halt!” Captain Everwatch yelled out. “It looks like we'll have to do the warm-ups over again because somepony had better things to do until now.” She marched down the line of sweating mares as they all slightly groaned at the idea of having to do their workouts over again. When she came up next to Gleaming, she paused for a moment, looking scornfully.
As Gleaming felt the Captain's gaze go up and down her, she trembled slightly, sure that her lacy red bra was easy to see underneath.
The Captain shook her head slowly, her tight-cut black mane not moving an inch. “You see? This is why I don't like taking recruits from the other princesses' guard cadres.” She sneered. “No discipline.”
Now Gleaming also felt the eyes of her fellow guardsponies on her back. It was almost enough to get her breaking into a sweat. She wasn't a bad guard! She'd been the best! “What's your name, Private?”

“And who was your previous commanding officer, Private Shy Gleaming Shield? I'd like to have a talk with them – about the quality of their troops. You're supposedly the best they had to offer, aren't you? That's awfully pathetic, if you ask me. So who'd you report to in the Crystal Empire? Topaz Lance? Obsidian? Old Diamond Slice? He'd be the kind to have such lax troops, I'm sure.”
Gleaming hesitated for just a moment. She hadn't prepared that much backstory, actually ... and she wasn't sure she was familiar enough with any of those to satisfy any further questions the Captain had. If she said something wrong, it might blow her cover. She needed a commanding officer she knew well enough to pass. Of course! Someone she knew better than anyone! “I reported directly to Shining Armor, Ma'am.”
That actually got the Captain to take a surprised step back. “A private, reporting directly to Prince Shining Armor? What kind of command structure is that? What games are they playing in the Empire? Don't answer that.” She executed a perfect turn on her heels, beginning to stroll back up to the head of the formation. “Private Gleaming Shield, I'll expect you an hour early for tomorrow's training exercises, where I'll be giving you a personal workout, to make up for the time you've lost today. Someone under Shining Armor's command should have no problem keeping up with our most intense workouts.” She reached the head of the formation and turned to face them. “For now, the rest of you lot have been slacking off for long enough. Back to the start – a hundred jumping jacks, on my count. One! Two! Three! ...”
Gleaming let herself be carried along by the familiar routine of the workout. Well, as much as she could, anyway. While she might have wanted to let herself drift off into the routine of it all, there were a few new distractions...
The first thing she noticed, before the Captain even reached the count of five, was that the view had changed substantially.
