Looking back, it was hard to see how things turned out this well for you.
Seriously, every instinct you had about the world and the way things worked dictated that fucking Principal Cinch and volunteering to take care of her child should have ruined your entire life. You walk through the foyer, stepping into the living room. Cinch is sitting there in her armchair, as she was known to do, reading the novel you had picked out for the two of you to read together. You were falling behind, but you promised her that you’d catch up soon. You go to greet her, but she shushes you gently, pointing to the baby rocker, where your daughter quietly slept.
Minerva was a spitting image of her mother. Her small features were as sharp and powerful as Cinch’s, somehow looking stern and intimidating even as a baby. You were glad that Cinch had a daughter, rather than a son. Of course, you’d love a boy, but it was easier to forget that Minerva was another man’s child since she looked so much like her mother.
“Welcome home,” says Cinch, her voice low, the edges of her tone tinged with exhaustion. “How was work?”
“Glad it’s over. How’s Minnie been?” you ask, leaning in to kiss Cinch on the cheek. Before you can retreat, she grabs you beneath the chin and gives you a more meaningful kiss on the lips.
“I was afraid she’d never get to sleep,” she sighs as you break away. “She’s been crying all day. Teething isn’t doing her well, it seems.”
“Ah, alright. I’ll run to the liquor store and get her some brandy,” you say with a smirk, knowing exactly the sort of reaction that’ll get you.
“With God as my witness, I will murder you with my bare hands if you try to give my child hard liquor.” Cinch knows you’re joking, and this was her way of playing along. Nothing you weren’t used to. Her dry, cold sense of humor was one of the things you liked most about her.
“Alright, fine. Just beer, then?” Cinch frowns at you, and you grin at her. She can’t hold her facade for very long, eventually breaking into a smirk and kissing you again.
“Hilarious. Ever the charmer, Mr. Anon,” Cinch remarks dryly. “So quick witted.”
“Alas, I admit it.”
“Indeed, with that sharp tongue of yours, you’d make quite a lawyer.”
“Heh. Maybe one day. Anyway, did you eat yet?” you ask, taking a seat on the arm of Cinch’s chair. “I was thinking about going out to pick something up.”
“Actually, I had a thought.” Cinch closes her book, setting it down on the coffee table. She removes her glasses, letting you see the exhaustion more clearly in her pale purple eyes. “Do you know what tomorrow is?”
Immediately, you’re put on edge. Your very sparse experience with women leads you to believe that Cinch just asked you a question that you should 100% know the answer to. In fact, your hesitation here is probably gonna cause you some grief later on. But you’ve never been one to admit defeat, and so you rack your brain in attempt to remember.
“Uh… It’s… Er…” you struggle for a bit, not knowing what Cinch was getting at. It wasn’t a birthday, and you weren’t her student anymore, so it wasn’t an assignment due. A light bulb goes off, and it clicks in your head using common sense, context clues, and the good old process of elimination (the three things that got you through school in the first place). “Oh! It’s our anniversary, isn’t it?”
“Very good. A year since you vandalized my home,” Cinch remarks. You chuckle weakly, part of you almost having forgotten what got you here to begin with.
“Well, Abby, that act of vandalism got me the greatest woman on planet Earth,” you say. “So I think it was worth the trouble.”
“Charming. Well, I wanted to do something special. There’s a restaurant I’ve been dying to try downtown, and I figure this would be the perfect occasion.”
“Obviously, I’d love that. But…” You look down at Minerva, her tiny fists balled up to her face. She’s not your daughter, but you love her just the same as if she was. She’s the light of your life. By some sort of cosmic coincidence, you hear the ringing of your doorbell. You glance at Cinch, who simply smirks and gives you an expectant look. With a shrug, you get up from the chair and cross the house to the front door. You open it, a surprised smile finding its way to your face when you see who’s on the other side.
“Anon! It’s been way too long!” Cadance wastes no time in hugging you, and you happily return the affection. You’d always been fond of her, back in school. She always had your back when you needed her, and she was the first person to learn about your unconventional relationship with Cinch. Although she was a bit surprised, she didn’t judge you in any way. She celebrated your love, and vowed to support you both however she could.
“Hasn’t it? Come on in, Dean Cadance,” you say, kicking yourself at the habit.
“Just Cadance is fine, Anon,” Cadance chuckles. She steps into the house and pulls off her flats, following you into the living room.
“Old habits die hard, y’know? I still sometimes have trouble stopping myself from calling Abby ‘Principal Cinch’,” you remark. Cadance gives a good-natured laugh, before her eyes fall on Cinch, who had at some point picked Minerva up from her rocker.
“Let me see the little angel!” Cadance seemed ecstatic at the sight of a baby, giving you the vibe that she was one of those people who were born to be a mother. “Oh my lord, she’s so precious! She looks just like you, Abacus. Absolutely beautiful.”
“Thank you, Mia,” Cinch says with a small smile. “It’s good to see you. How are things at the school?”
“You scared them good, Abacus. Your students know better than to cause trouble while you’re away.” Cadance reaches forward, to hold the baby, and Cinch recoils slightly by some motherly instinct. You give her a look, and she relaxes slightly, allowing Cadance to take Minerva from her arms. “As a matter of fact, Sugarcoat and her friends have been popping by every now and then to help keep things in line. Did you get their gift basket?”
“Yes, it was incredibly thoughtful of them. I can’t believe they forgave me for the Friendship Games situation.”
“Yeah, you fucked up pretty bad,” you remark, earning yourself a glare from Cinch.
“Just because you’re no longer my student does not mean I can’t give you detention,” she shoots back. “And I assure you, it will not be as fun as last time.”
“What happened last time?” Cadance seems confused, which amuses you to no end. She knows of your relationship, obviously, but you did keep some details under wraps, for obvious reasons.
“That is neither here nor there, Mia.” Cinch blushes faintly, a rare occurrence. That woman is never embarrassed by anything, and you find it amusing whenever you can get her flustered.
“Not that it’s not great seeing you, Cadance, but what brings you around here?” you ask. “School stuff?”
Cadance and Cinch share a look, which makes you a bit nervous. You’re not a huge fan of being laughed at, and that’s what it seems like is happening. Cadance in particular smirks at you, like she knows something you don’t. To be fair, she probably does, but that’s not the point.
“So you didn’t tell him?” asks Cadance, just adding to the sensation that you’re on the outside of an inside joke.
“She did not,” you say, eyebrow raised curiously.
“Well, tomorrow marks a year since our relationship took on a more intimate nature,” Cinch says, a devilish smirk working its way to her face.
“Intimate is a way to phrase it, yeah.”
“Shut up. The point is, I wanted to do something special to celebrate.” That gets your attention, and Cinch smiles a bit wider. “There’s a resort I’ve had my eyes on for some time, and they offer a very special couples package, something to bring us closer together. Mia offered to look after Minerva tomorrow while we’re away.”
“Wow. That’s incredibly generous of you, Cadance,” you say, genuinely at a loss. Between work and taking care of Minerva, the stress has been piling up on you. While you never saw yourself as much of a spa guy, any time away with Cinch was a good thing in your book (especially if it gave you the opportunity for a quickie every now and then). “Are you sure you can handle it?”
“I’m no stranger to looking after babies, Anon,” says Cadance with a chuckle. “I mean, I did keep an eye on you for four years.” You two share a laugh, and you’re reminded why you liked Cadance so much back at CPA. Cinch assures you that Cadance has matters well in hand, and you pretty much admit defeat. As usual, she was right. The receptionist hits a button on her desk, and two members of resort staff emerge from seemingly nowhere to take your bags. They lead you through the place, and you expect for them to bring you to your room. To your surprise, they bring you to the back, an elevator hidden away, and gesture for you to go in. You follow them, Cinch still in your hand, and the four of you squeeze into the tiny service elevator. Again, your expectations are subverted, because the elevator lurches downward instead of up. The staff chuckle, as if you asked a very stupid question. Cinch pats your arm gently, soothing you with her gentle touch. It was hard to be nervous about where you were when you had a woman like Cinch on your arm.
“It’s a bit… unconventional.” Cinch chooses her words carefully, which continues the day’s theme of putting you on edge. “It’s called The Ultimate Romantic Couple’s Treatment, and it’s not just something anyone can experience.”
The elevator stops, and the doors slide open. You’re taken aback at what you see; a beautiful, expansive spa area. It somehow looks bigger than the resort above ground, with a big, round lobby leading into a number of different rooms. Waiting for you there are two women, identical twins. They wore matching white suits, and each had on a white choker, inlaid with a gem matching their hair color (the one on the left has pink hair, while the one on the right has blue).
“Hello, Ms. Cinch,” says the pink hair one. Her voice has some sort of heavy accent. Something European. Swedish, perhaps. “I am Lotus Blossom. This is my sister, Aloe. We spoke over the phone. I believe Mrs. Harshwhinny referred you to us?”
“Yes, of course. This is Anon,” says Cinch, gesturing to you. You nervously wave, not sure why you were in some sort of secret, subterranean lair of a spa.
“Oh, I see, this is the handsome husband you told us about,” says Aloe, giving you a wink. You chuckle nervously, looking to Cinch to see if it was safe to correct her. She doesn’t give you any response, so you go for broke.
“Eh… I’m not her husband,” you say. Quickly, you decide to add. “Not yet, anyway.” You can feel Cinch glow a little brighter upon hearing that, and you smile. Smooth as silk, Anon. As usual. “So… I’m at a bit of a loss. What kind of couples treatment is this, exactly?”
Aloe and Lotus laugh, once again giving you that feeling of not knowing something obvious. Honestly, it was starting to annoy you, just a tiny bit. Once the twins finish chuckling at your expense, they turn and lead you and Cinch down the hall.
