Princess Luna has been feeling very lonely for a while. On a seemingly typical dream-surfing night, she decides to seek out a special commoner to spend her time with in the dream world. However, after witnessing the horrific nightmares (and depressing daily routine) of a forlorn young earth pony stallion barely getting by in Ponyville, she wants to become his real friend out of pity for him, and also so she could have someone to talk to and do things with. She finds that he is a lot like how she was... rejected... unappreciated... ridiculed...

The stallion, Aversion, really comes to care for Luna, but feels apprehensive to the idea of befriending a Princess, not just because of what everyone might think of him... but also because he feels he is not worthy to be her friend. Luna wants to help her new friend gain more self-confidence, but his constant nightmares force him to relive his childhood traumas... and Luna discovers that they appear to be happening because of something more sinister than normal...
