The Costume

It was a very important night in Canterlot, The Grand Galloping Gala to be exact. Princess Luna was just fixing her mane, the mares and stallions were having a wonderful time on the lower level of the castle. Dancing, chatting and eating. You know, things you would do at a gala.
“Sister!” Luna yelled. “It's time to perform your annual speech!”
There was no answer, the only words heard were the lyrics from the music downstairs.
“Princess Celestia? Can thou hear me?”
Luna became puzzled, wondering why her sister wouldn't answer back to her cries. She walked herself to the princess' bedroom.
She used her magic to turn the bejeweled knob. She opened the door to a very horrible sight.
The scene was horrifying, blood was everywhere. On the curtains, on the bed. Everywhere. The wounds on Celestia's neck had cuts, possibly from a sharpened horn. Her neck was twisted 180 and her mane... oh, her mane. Was no longer sparkling of blue, green and pink. But now, it was black. Completely colorless.
Luna couldn't stand the sight of her sister, she turned away. “guards...” Luna said softly through the tears in her eyes. “GUARDS!!” she yelled, now streaming tears down her dark blue mane. Two royal guards barged in the room. Seeing the same as Luna did. “ What happened?” one of the guards asked. “MY SISTER HAS BEEN MURDERED CAN'T THOU SEE??!!” Luna yelled passed her sobbing. Her yelling was understandable, the guard continued speaking in a calm voice. “Yes, we see and we are very sorry. Do you have any idea how this may have happened?”
Luna calmed down a bit. “N-no...”
“I don't understand, who would do this to Celestia?” she thought out loud.
“Look!” the other guard exclaimed, pointing the blood covered floor.
It was a blood trail in the shape of hooves leading the balcony.
“ The trail ends at the ledge. A pegasus must have committed the crime.” the guard continued.
“But, the stab wounds on my sister's neck. Their from a unicorn.” Luna said no longer crying.
“ The scene has evidence from a unicorn and a pegasus. Maybe an alicorn, such as yourself and Princess Cadence could have done it.” The other guard said.
“Yes, it is true, an alicorn has thou done this to my sister. But the only alicorns in Equestria are Celestia, myself, and Cadence. I'm damn sure I didn't do it. Cadence is still on her honeymoon with Twilight Sparkle's brother, so she couldn't have done it.”
It was a long silence after that... everypony was thinking of what to do. Soon one of the guards said the only logically thing to do at this point.
“Princess Luna, we'll have to continue this tomorrow. The Gala is still going on, downstairs. “Oh, alright. We'll meet in outside the castle doors first thing in the morning.” Luna replied.
all the ponies had no idea that their princess was murdered..
Everypony was having a wonderful time. Dancing, chatting and eating. You know, things you would do at a gala.
The following day Luna and the two guards met in front of the castle as planned.
“So Princess, Did you sleep good last night?” Said one of the guards, trying to make a joke. “This is no time for laughs my subject. My sister was murdered and we must find the one who done this.” Luna snapping at the guard. “Your Majesty, this is too big of a news for Canterlot to handle. Hell, it's too big for Equestria!” The other guard said. “Then who are we going to hire to investigate?” The other guard questioned.
“I know someone who can investigate, The one who taught Ponyville I was friendly on Nightmare Night. Twilight Sparkle. She's smart, maybe she and her friends can help.” Luna suggested.
“Your right, I've met Twilight many times. She's a genius, I'll issue her and her friends to come to Canterlot immediately.” The guard said.
A couple hours later. Twilight, Spike, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Applejack, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash were in Canterlot.
“Man, it's way too early to travel! I wasn't even able to stretch my wings this morning!” Rainbow Dash complained with a yawn. “Yes, Rainbow. We realize it is only 11 in the morning. But Princess Luna demanded we came right away. I still even know why we're here yet.” Twilight said walking out of the train the six ponies traveled in to get there.
As soon as everypony got out of the train one of the royal guards walked over to them.
“Twilight Sparkle.” he said in a monotone voice.
“Yes?”
“ Princess Luna wants you and your friends in the castle. Now.”
“Okey Dokey Loki!” Pinkie Pie answered as she hopped pass the guard, open the castle doors and up the stairs.
The ponies still tired, slowly walked up the stairs as well. Spike was asleep on Rarity's back as she brushed her mane, levitating the brush with her magic. “oh my, this mane of mine just doesn't want to do the cute curl at the end like it usually does.” Rarity said, brushing even harder. “Ah haystacks Rarity, when will yeh stop complainin' bout your hair and start walking up the stairs at a faster pace?” Applejack snapped. She was still a little cracky from the rough morning. “ Oh, can you both please stop arguing, I mean, if you want to...” Fluttershy said in a calm soothing voice as she flew slowly toward the next flight of stairs.
The six ponies (and Spike) soon were at the door to the ball room. Twilight turned the knob to see Luna standing before them.
“Welcome back to Canterlot my little ponies.” Luna greeted the ponies.
“Good morning Princess, sorry for sounding rude, but, can you please still us why you brought us here?” Twilight asked.
“Well, you and your friends will be the only ones in Equestria to know about this. So I will not repeat myself.” Luna replied.
“What is it?” Twilight asked.
“Princess Celestia was murdered yesterday. On the night of the Gala.” Luna answered.
Everypony was to tired to cry, so they just accepted the horrible news and went back to asking questions. “Who do you think do doned it?” Pinkie asked. “Myself and two guards believe it was a alicorn.” Luna said.
“what's an alicorn?” Rainbow Dash asked.
“an alicorn is a pony. Part pegasus, part unicorn.” Twilight answered. She turned back to Luna. “Princess Luna, could you please show us where the princess was murdered?” “Well, if thou art must do so to help, you may.” Luna said.
The ponies walked across the large ball room where the many ponies including the mane 6 were when the Princess was murdered. “ Don't understand, how could nopony have heard the princess' screeches of pain?” Rarity asked to herself. “'Cuz Vinyl Scratch and Octavia were jamming pretty hard last night!” Rainbow Dash answered the question even though she wasn't asked to.
At the end of ball room there was yet another flight of stairs. Leading to the princess' rooms. Up the stairs there was a hallway. To the left was Luna's room. Up a another set of stairs, but these steps were a little extra fancy. They were made of gold, and there were rubies in the steps in a checkerboard like pattern. "Oh! Forget about the princess. I want these steps! They are absolutly gorgous!" Rarity said in excitement. The ponies ignored her and walked up the stairs,

Luna opened the door.
Celestia's corpse was removed from the crime scene hours before.
The Mane 6 and Luna went inside the room to look for more clues. “My, my. Spike your getting very heavy for a baby dragon, it's time to wake up!” Rarity said as she bucked Spike of her back. Spike fell to the ground. He began to woke up slowly, “AAAHHHHH!! what the hay Rarity! It's very scary to wake up to a dark, bloody room! By the way, what happened here?” Spike asked.
“While we were busy partying during the Gala last night... Princess Celestia was murdered.” Rarity explained.
Same as everypony else, Spike just woke up. So he was too tired to cry too.
“Luna! Lookie here!” Applejack said pointing at a tree branch from over the balcony.
The branch was coated in blood, and their was a purple cloth stuck on it.
Twilight used her powers to levitate the cloth toward her face to get a closer look.
“No, No. This can't be possible!” She cried.
“What is it?” Rainbow Dash said, swooping in as if from nowhere.
“Rainbow, Do you remember when you were acting like the hero of Ponyville? And then you stared getting to wrapped up in the fame?” Twilight said, clearing her throat.
“Yeah...”
“Well, do you also remember the five of us dressing up as Mare Do Well to get you to stop?”
“Yeah...”
“Rainbow, this cloth is from one of the Mare Do Well costumes!”
Everypony gasped in horror.
“Twilight Sparkle, are thou saying that Mare Do Well did this to thou my sister?” Luna asked.
“Yes, and from the looks of it... She was wounded on the branch. And there is a trail of blood leading towards the Everfree Forest!”
YAY! OUR FIRST CLUE! WE LEAVE FIRST THING TOMORROW! Pinkie Pie yelled at the top of her lungs, after that, she hopped on the bed and suddenly fell asleep almost instantly.
“Pinkie Pie, you are so random.” Rainbow Dash said with a yawn. Now noticing it was 11 o'clock, Rainbow closed her wings and landed in the bed next to Pinkie. She closed her eyes. And when to sleep.
The other ponies followed the same actions. Twilight, Spike and Rarity went to bed in Luna's room and Applejack and Fluttershy slept on the ground in Luna room.
Luna stayed awake looking over the horizon of Equestria over Celestia's balcony. Thinking. Wondering. Pacing. Looking up to the night sky.
“Celestia, my sister.” She began to whisper. “I will find your killer and avenge your death. I love you dear sister.” she said with a single tear that fell to the ground.
