Twilight Sparkle gives her pony counterpart a book. She knew her friend would read the book, but not the consequences of reading the book. The reader is absorbed by the story and experiences it first hand as if she had been the character.
Human Twilight Sparkle gives Princess Twilight Sparkle an enchanted book. Naturally and as expected, she can't help herself, but reads the book.
As Twilight cracks open the book, the enchantment takes hold and the event is enacted upon her in her real life. If it is in her head, or if it is just a fantasy played out if for Twilight herself to figure out or decide.
