Withania rolled into her bed, pulling up the quilt and propping up the pillows so she could sit up and read. The forest is vast and sprawling, packed with ancient trees, dense foliage, and ruthless wildlife all competing for survival. You must trot carefully if you wish to return home safely with or without your goal. Before you lies a worn path leading deeper into the forest, the closest thing to a road you will find in these parts. Will you follow the road, or strike out into the undergrowth to seek your own path?
“Pah, easy road is for tourists,” said Withania, taking another sip of tea as she flicked forward to the indicated page, “Give me adventure!”
The main path in the forest seems to be rather exposed, so you decide to push your way into the dense undergrowth, joining a maze of animal runs that zigzag and curve in every direction. You’re definitely concealed now, but without a compass you quickly lose your sense of direction and become hopelessly lost!
Forging ahead as best you can, the soft rustle of your hoofsteps through the leaves is interrupted by a soft, but deep and rumbling growl from behind. You quickly turn tail to face the danger - a huge dire wolf towers over you, staring down with piercing red eyes and dripping chops!
You backup while looking for a gap in the bushes to dive into, but a huge oak tree blocks the way behind you, and before you have a chance to react, the wolf leaps forward and grabs your entire body in its jaws, lifting you off the ground. You lash out and manage to land a punch on its huge snout, only to be rewarded by falling to the ground with a thud. You stagger back to your hooves in a daze, and while you’re completely helpless, the wolf growls once more and opens wide.
You see a drool-soaked maw descend over your head, and in a moment your vision goes black as those terrible jaws close around your rump, trapping your entire body inside the wolf’s mouth! The wolf sits back and raises its head up high, and with a swift gulp you slip headfirst down its gullet on a wave of saliva.
A dank and smelly chamber awaits you at the bottom of this ride, where you’re unceremoniously squeezed out of the throat and into the stomach in a puddle of ooze. The walls are soft and pulsing, dripping with angry fluids that quickly cling to your fur and drench you to the skin. The gap in the canopy makes for spectacular rays of light lancing down into the ravine. A river runs down below, not so far that falling would be fatal, but jumping would be a risky move. The cliffs have slipped slightly, indicating that it might be possible to climb down.
To your left, however, a bridge of vines clings onto both sides. Whether it was a plant skillfully grown into that shape, or wild vines had claimed a once pony-made bridge is unclear, but it looks sturdy enough. Will you cross the bridge, or try to make your way down the cliff side?
“Eh. Climbing down the cliffs is probably a ‘you fall and drown’ option, I’ll pass…” muttered Withania, skipping forward with her nose while reaching for her tea. Her right hoof remained under the covers, keeping her warm until she hit the next good bit.
You decide to cross the vine-bridge, since it looks a great deal safer than trying to climb down the ravine. The vines are strong and sturdy, however there are no planks forming a walkway - you carefully pick your hoof placement, trying not to slip between the vines. They’re too dense for you too fall through, but as strong as the bridge seems it would be unwise to put it to any sort of test.
You’re about half-way across the bridge when your ears pick up the dreaded but unmistakable rustle of the vines unravelling. You pick up your pace immediately, getting ready to jump as soon as you can - and then amidst the myriad of vines shifting around your hooves a group of larger tendrils jut out and entwine about your legs!
As you’re held aloft the bridge unravels below you into a mass of rippling tendrils that curl up and wrap around your body, supporting your hips, shoulders and neck until you’re bound in mid-air, the far side of the chasm now truly out of reach. “Bound to be a clue here I’ll need later…” said Withania. You creep forward, carefully pushing through low hanging branches that obscure the path, when an unseen branch snaps loudly under your hoof. You freeze dead on the spot as the heavy breathing suddenly stops. Surely anything this big can’t move quietly enough to sneak up on you?
You thought wrong. The dwarf trees currently acting as your cover are torn clean out of the ground by a mighty claw, leaving you as exposed as a rabbit in an open field. A colossal mass of satin scales fills your vision, rising far above your head as you look up to see what has found you - a dragon! Earth browns, yellows, and green tinges camouflage this huge titan of the forest, explaining how you managed to miss it from a distance, and its keen eyes pierce your soul. The Horseshoe was your own, and your fortune, most unexpected. Remember to pay your good fortunes forward, and let another experience their own journey!”
The next page was blank, followed by the back cover of the book. Withania blinked, slightly confused.
Well, she certainly had experienced unexpected fortune… But how was it that the book just happened to be what she would consider a blessing?
“I think I should loan it to someone, and ask them what they think of it next week…” she said, a sly smile creeping up the corners of her mouth.
