– Studies of the Heart –
“And if you add these properties to this flow, you’ll get an entirely new effect.” Starlight said, pointing to a page in her book.
“Wow! I had no idea spells could be so similar like this? You can change the properties with just a subtle change in the aetheric flow?” Comet said, laying against Starlight’s side.
“Sure can. I learned this when I was your age. My teacher had me practice turning an apple into an orange and back again for hours. It drove me insane.” Starlight laughed.
Comet laughed, and then looked up at her teacher, “Hey, can you show me how to make an apple into an orange tomorrow?”
Starlight smiled, “That was the plan. If I have to suffer through it, so do you.”
Comet giggled, and that got Starlight giggling too. At that moment the door to the room opened and a purple stallion poked his head inside to see his two favorite ponies snuggling in the bed giggling to each other.
“I see you two are cozy. It’s time for bed, Comet.” Trail said.
“Aww, but Dad I wanna stay up more. Starlight was showing me cool magic stuff.” Comet pouted.
“Sorry kiddo, but Starlight needs her rest and you’ve got school in the morning.” Trail countered.
Starlight put the book down for a moment, “It’s ok Trail. A few more minutes and I’ll take her to bed.”
“Starlight.” Trail said.
Starlight gave Comet a wink and both mares gave the stallion their best puppy dog eyes, “Pllllleeeeeease?”
Trail clenched at his heart, it was too cute.
“Alright, alright I give up. That was just not fair.” Trail chuckled.
Starlight and Comet giggled at the stallion, hugging each other.
“Alright, well I’m beat so I’ll see you two in the morning.” Trail said, moving to close the door.
“Night Daddy!” Comet said, waving to her dad.
“Good night Trail.” Starlight said, giving a little wave of her own.
“Good night girls. Don’t stay up too late or you’re both grounded.” Trail said, closing the door.
Comet went back to resting against Starlight’s side as they continued to read the magical tome in Starlight’s lap. Comet used her magic to turn the page, making it easier for Starlight. The mare still had months before her magic would start to return. It was hard getting used to not having it, even more so while in a wheelchair. But she had plenty of support, both at home and at the school.
Home. Trail’s house really did feel like home to her now. She had been staying in Twilight’s Castle for a while and yet only a few months in this house had made her feel at home. It truly was remarkable how much Trail had changed her life. And Comet of course.
The reading continued on, first it was five minutes. Then it was fifteen minutes. Starlight had completely lost track of time, being too focused on the book and the lesson she was giving.
“And this spell property is vital to understand how different an explosion of light and an explosion of fire can be, for example with Trixie’s firewo–” Starlight said, pausing her speech when she heard something to her side.
Light snoring could be heard as Comet had fallen asleep against Starlight. The filly was sound asleep and Starlight hadn’t even noticed when she nodded off.
The mare smiled and attempted to move the filly so she could get to her wheelchair and take her to bed. But the filly simply snuggled tightly against her, wrapping her forelegs around Starlight’s. The mare was trapped, caught in the vice-like grip of her student.
Accepting her fate at this point, she decided that they could both just sleep in this room for the night. It was no trouble. Starlight moved to make herself comfortable without waking the filly. As she lay resting against the pillow, Comet still clinging to her foreleg, she started to drift off as well.
“Mommy.” Comet said softly.
Starlight gasped lightly and looked down at the filly. Comet was now snuggling against Starlight’s chest, smiling as she snored lightly into Starlight’s fur. Starlight was stunned, she couldn’t have heard that right. Comet couldn’t have just called her…
Starlight rolled down the street of Ponyville, her thoughts were all over the place and she almost ran into several ponies while in her daze. As she found herself by the central fountain, she looked into the water and saw the vision of Comet lying against her with the word “Mommy” ringing in her ears.
Maybe she should talk about this with someone. Twilight? No, she was too busy running the school. All of her other friends were busy with classes too. Who could she go to?
Suddenly an explosion of confetti and fireworks nearly made Starlight jump out of her wheelchair. She turned to see her friend Trixie standing proud behind her.
“Starlight, The Great and Powerful Trixie is here to give you the most wonderful news!” She proclaimed.
“Trixie, you almost gave me a heart attack.” Starlight said, holding her chest.
The magician gave a sheepish grin and moved next to her friend, “Oh, Trixie did forget you are still recovering and might have went a little overboard. But Trixie does have great news!”
Starlight groaned, “It’s ok. What is it?”
Trixie held out two tickets in front of Starlight, “Two free passes for a full spa treatment at The Ponyville Day Spa!”
Starlight looked at the pieces of paper and they were indeed what Trixie said they were.
“Where did you get these?” Starlight asked.
“The Great and Powerful Trixie has many connections. When Trixie learned of what transpired while she was away, she knew she had to make it up to you. And then she heard about that wretched little colt who tortured dear Comet, was finally expelled. Trixie had to use her vast network of loyal followers to procure the perfect tickets for her best friend’s perfect spa day in celebration!” Trixie yelled out.
Starlight stared at her friend with a deadpan look, making the magician sweat a little. This staring contest went on for about a minute before Trixie relented and sighed.
“Trixie got these by promising Aloe and Lotus that Trixie would promote their spa in her next show.”
Starlight nodded and smiled, “Doesn’t telling the truth feel better Trix?”
“Trixie still prefers her perspective of events, but will relent for her best friend. Now come on, we have to get to the spa before it gets too crowded.” Trixie said, pushing Starlight towards the spa.
“Trixie, you really didn’t have to.” Starlight said.
Trixie stopped and looked back at her friend, “Trixie does actually.”
Starlight didn’t get a chance to press further as Trixie continued to push her along.
Trixie and Starlight laid down in the lounge chairs of the spa, getting their hooves done by Aloe and Lotus. Cucumbers were laid on their eyes but Starlight could feel Trixie looking at her.
“Trix? You ok?” She asked.
“Trixie is fine. Are you enjoying yourself?” Trixie said, a little too quickly.
“This is really relaxing. It’s been a while since we had a spa day together.” Starlight said, relaxing in her chair.
“Yeah, Trixie agrees. You deserve a spa day, after everything you went through. Trixie should treat you to this every week.” Trixie said, her voice wavering a little.
Starlight turned her head in Trixie’s direction, “Trixie, this is really nice. But you don’t have to do that.”
“Trixie does need to do that.” Trixie said.
“Why?” Starlight asked.
Trixie sighed, “Miss Aloe, Miss Lotus, can Trixie have the room please?”
“Of course, we shall be right outside.” Aloe said.
She and her sister left the room, leaving Starlight alone with Trixie, a look of worry on her face.
“Trixie, what’s wrong?” Starlight asked.
“Trixie is sorry.” She said softly.
“Sorry? For what?” Starlight asked.
“If Trixie hadn’t gone on that stupid trip, Trixie could have been here to help you with Chrysalis. And that stupid bug wouldn’t have used Trixie’s form to hurt you..” Trixie said, tears flowing at her last words.
Starlight gasped, so that’s what this was about. Starlight wanted to just get up and hug the mare. But in her condition she couldn’t.
“Trixie.” Starlight said.
The blue unicorn looked over at her friend, eyes full of tears.
Starlight gestured for her to come closer. Trixie hesitated for a moment, but relented at Starlight’s insistent stare. When Trixie was in range, Starlight wrapped her hooves around the mare’s neck, stunning the show mare.
“Don’t you ever blame yourself for what that witch did.” Starlight said, hugging her friend.
Trixie stood there, not knowing if she should hug back, “But, she used Trixie to hurt you. Trixie would never hurt you like that.”
“I know you wouldn’t. I was so insecure with my feelings, and Chrysalis used that. She used my best friend to hurt me, and I’ll never forgive her for that.” Starlight said.
Trixie gasped, “Best friend?”
Starlight leaned back to smile at the mare, “My best friend. My first true friend. Twilight and the other elements came with being her student. But you and I have so much in common and so much fun together. You’re my best friend Trixie.”
Trixie broke down crying at that statement, Starlight starting to shed a few tears as well. They held each other for a few minutes before they started to calm down. They let go of each other and started to laugh.
“Trixie couldn’t ask for a better best friend.” Trixie smiled.
“Ditto.” Starlight said.
As Trixie went back to her seat, she was about to call in the spa ponies before Starlight remembered something.
“Hey Trix, I know we just had a sappy moment, but can I ask you about something?” Starlight asked.
“Of course best friend, what advice do you ask of the Great and Powerful Trixie?” Trixie said, giving a little pose on the table.
Starlight sighed, “It’s about Comet.”
Trixie’s expression changed to concern as she saw the look of worry on Starlight’s face, “What’s wrong Starlight? Did you two have a fight?”
“No no! Nothing like that. She and I kinda fell asleep studying last night and right before I nodded off, I could swear I heard her say…” Starlight said, hesitating at the end.
Trixie blinked, “She said what?”
Starlight swallowed the lump in her throat, “She called me… mommy.”
Trixie gasped, “Starlight, that is so sweet!”
“But but, I don’t know where it came from. I mean, I’m not upset about it. But, what am I supposed to do?” Starlight said, confusion in her voice.
Trixie smiled at her friend, “Starlight, you are dating her dad. And you’ve been spending a lot more time with not just Comet and Trail, but their whole family, right?”
Starlight nodded.
“And she never had a real mother figure, right?” Trixie added.
Starlight thought for a moment, “I guess not.”
“And then here comes this pretty mare who loves magic like she does, loves her dad, stays in her house, reads her bedtime stories, and tells her goodnight. What does that sound like to you?” Trixie said with a smirk.
Starlight thought about what Trixie was saying. She had been reading to Comet almost every night, telling her goodnight, getting her a glass of warm milk some nights. And there was that one time Comet was having a nightmare and came into bed with Trail and her. Just like Starlight’s mother had when she was a filly.
Starlight looked at Trixie, “You really think Comet sees me as her mother?”
Trixie chuckled, “Starlight, that filly adores you. Trixie has seen you two. And the way you fought so hard to defend her against Chrysalis. That was the wrath of a mother.”
Starlight started to smile to herself. All those warm feelings when she and Comet went to the park to fly kites, all those mornings with hugs and giggling. Trail made her truly happy, and so did Comet. If Starlight had a daughter, she would want one just like Comet.
No, she did have a daughter. Comet was her daughter, even if she and Trail weren’t married yet. In time, but for now, it still felt right.
“I never thought I’d be a mother.” Starlight said solemnly.
“Trixie knows you will be a spectacular mother.” Trixie said, laying back on the table.
“Thanks Trix, you’re the best.” Starlight said, lying back on her table.
“Trixie knows, but Trixie has one more request.”
Starlight looked at her friend, “What?”
“Trixie would like to be Aunty Trixie, and the maid of honor at your wedding.” Trixie said, smirking at Starlight.
Starlight blushed, “What wedding!?”
Trixie laughed at her friend's embarrassment, making Starlight glare at the mare.
“Hmph, keep that up Auntie Trixie, and you won’t be invited to Friday night dinners anymore.” Starlight said.
Trixie’s eyes widened and looked at her friend desperately, “No! Trixie cannot live without Trail’s Friday night pasta surprise!”
“My coltfriend, my rules.” Starlight said, smirking at the mare.
Trixie cried out dramatically as the spa ponies returned to finish their treatment. Starlight giggled and laid back. Trixie was her best friend and she was sure Comet liked her as well. Auntie Trixie had a nice ring to it. And the more Starlight kept remembering Comet calling her ‘Mommy”, she couldn’t help but giggle.
