One More Day
“The depth of the love of parents for their children cannot be measured. It is like no other relationship. It exceeds concern for life itself. The love of a parent for a child is continuous and transcends heartbreak and disappointment.” -James E. Faust
“We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.” -Bryan White
Rainbow Dash flew quickly toward Cloudsdale, excitement racing through her. Today she was going to visit her parents. She saw her parents’ home coming up quickly and felt a loosening in the pit of her stomach. There was something comforting about the old cloud home. Something she couldn’t explain. It made her feel safe. She flew towards the door and opened it. It was unlocked, as it always was whenever she came home. She stepped inside.
“Mom? Dad?” She called, and looked around. Neither of her parents appeared to be home. But they knew she was coming. They had to be here. She checked the kitchen, her parents’ bedroom, and finally, her old room. Just when she was about to look for them elsewhere, she heard voices coming from the door where her parents had chosen to display her proudest achievements. She walked up to the door and listened, wanting to open the door but not wanting to disturb them, and could just barely make out her parents’ voices.
“Remember when she flew for the first time, Bow?” Said Windy Whistles, a tear leaking down her cheek.
“I remember every moment.” Bow Hot Hoof replied.
“I miss those days so much. I wish I had known how fast they were going to be gone.” She said regretfully.
“I know, honey. But our girl is doing great. She’s a Wonderbolt now. She’s living her dream.”
“I know that. And I’m happy for her. I just wish that I had one more day with my little filly. I knew she couldn’t stay a filly forever, but I just… When you have a foal you never picture them growing up. You always picture having that foal or a filly. I’m so proud of her and everything she’s accomplished. I just wish we had time with our little filly again…” Windy felt a choked sob escape her, and Bow wrapped his hoof around her.
“I know.” He said quietly.
For a moment nobody said anything, and Rainbow Dash felt guilt descend on her like a tidal wave. She wondered how long her mother had felt that way, and more importantly why she hadn’t felt like she could tell her. She couldn’t bear the thought of that and quickly raced out of the house and onto a nearby but slightly hidden cloud to think.
The more she thought over her mother’s words, the more her guilt overwhelmed her. She knew, logically, of course, that she had nothing to feel bad about. Growing up couldn’t be helped. She had just done what had been expected of all ponies. She had grown, gotten a job, a home, and had even saved Equestria a few times. But through all of it, she had always had the steady support and encouragement of her parents, who never once showed an ounce of regret at the path she had taken. Now she wondered if they had indeed had more regrets than they had let on. She thought about all the love and reassurance they had given her during the few times she had ever doubted herself. If they could do all of that for her, why couldn’t she do something for them? But what could she do?
She thought it over for a solid ten minutes before she formulated a plan. She darted back to Ponyville before she lost her nerve.
It only took an hour for her to gather what she needed and fly back to her parents’ home. She felt nerves jump on her at the idea in her head, but she wasn’t about to back down. She knocked on the door with her hoof, trying not to remind herself of the items in her saddlebag.
Bow Hot Hoof answered the door. “There’s my Rainbow Dash! How are you, kiddo?”
“I’m good, Dad. Is Mom here?”
“In the Kitchen.”
“Awesome.”
Rainbow followed her father into the kitchen and saw her mother in the kitchen, and wrapped her hooves around her.
“Hi mom.”
“Dashie! How are you, Honey?”
“I’m good. Can I talk to you guys for a second?”
“Of course. Let’s sit in the living room.”
Rainbow felt fear creep up her spine, but would not be deterred.
“So, what’s on your mind?” Asked Bow.
Rainbow paused, unsure of how to start. “I’ve been... stressed lately.” She began. “And I kind of had an idea of how to relax but it’s… unusual. And I’d need your help.”
“Whatever you need, honey, you know you’ve got it.” Said Windy Whistles.
Rainbow felt herself relax at her mother’s words. Her parents’ unconditional love and acceptance wrap around her like a warm blanket. She loosened her saddlebag and opened the contents, dumping them onto the couch. There were diapers, foal powder, wipes, rash cream, a bottle, and a pacifier. Bow and Windy looked at the items, and then at each other. First in confusion, then in happiness. Windy Whistles ran a hoof through her daughter’s mane.
“Are you sure this is what you want?” She asked. Rainbow Dash swallowed what little pride she had left, and nodded, putting on a brave face for her parents. She felt herself blush only slightly when they kissed both of her cheeks. In a move that was as old and familiar to her as breathing, Windy Whistles pulled her daughter into her hooves, relishing in the close feeling. She then led Rainbow upstairs and into her old room.
“Lay Down, sweetheart.” Instructed Windy. Rainbow felt a chill of fear go through her, but ignored it and obeyed her mother. Bow Hot Hoof handed her a thick and fluffy white diaper. With the skill and expertise of a seasoned professional, She got her daughter changed into a diaper. When it was over, Windy Whistles repeated an old action that she hadn’t gotten to do in years. She leaned down, just as she finished taping up her daughter, and then leaned down to kiss her on the forehead. Then, she moved up and sniffed her head, once, twice, three times.
“Uh… Mom? What are you doing?”
Windy looked down at her daughter and smiled. “Did you know that mothers can identify their foals by smell?”
“They can?”
Windy nodded. “They used to say that it takes a day to learn your foal’s scent, but I knew you by your scent within an hour. Whenever you fell asleep in my hooves, I used to sniff your head all the time. I always thought you smelled like fresh rain. Your scent was comforted me like nothing ever had. Some nights when I missed you I would take your old pillow out from your room and sleep on it. I could still smell you there. It made me feel closer to you whenever you were gone.”
Rainbow contemplated her mother’s words for a minute. She got deep enough in her thoughts to temporarily forget her diapered state. It wasn’t until her father gave her diaper an affectionate pat that she remembered it, making her blush.
For the first time, she became aware of what the diaper around her waist felt like. It was like a soft, puffy cloud was around her waist. But more than that, there was something about wearing the foalish garment that made her feel incredibly safe and secure. It was like nothing could hurt her while she was wearing this. It was this feeling that gave her great pause. Carefully, she moved around. The garment crinkled softly, and the sound somehow soothed her. She sat up and tried to get on all four hooves, but the bulk between her legs was definitely something that she would have to get used to. She wobbled on her hooves, feeling a little unsteady. Not comfortable with the feeling, she flapped her wings just enough to hover off the ground, but even then, the weight of the diaper made her feel funny. It wasn’t like she wasn’t used to having extra weight near her flank, but something still felt off. She carefully lowered herself to the ground, but still almost tipped over. She would have completely if her mother hadn’t grabbed her by the hoof.
“Careful, Dashie. I don’t want you getting hurt.” She crooned. The lilt in her mother’s voice was something she hadn’t heard in years. It made her feel safe. Without warning, she hugged her mother tightly as memories of her very early childhood flowed through her and warmed her. How could she have ever forgotten all those lost memories with her mother? It occurred to her rather suddenly that maybe she hadn’t forgotten them entirely. Maybe they had just been buried too deep for her to notice. In this instance, the feeling of safety, closeness, and warmth all melded together in one perfect moment. Without thinking about it, Rainbow whispered,
“I love you, Mommy.”
Bow had been standing behind the two mares, but he didn’t have to see his wife’s face to know that she was smiling harder than she had in years. He went over and hugged his girls.
“I love you, Dashie.” Said Bow.
“I love you too, Daddy.”
A proud smile stretched across Bow’s face. For a moment, no one moved. No one breathed. There was a sense of time being frozen in the Cloudsdale home. Everything was perfect. Then, Rainbow Dash pulled away, momentarily embarrassed. Displays of affection were not her cup of tea. But the proud and happy looks her parents gave her made any residual embarrassment fade away. She knew that she had done the right thing.
A loud growl from her stomach ripped her away from her thoughts. For what felt like the millionth time that day, she blushed. But her parents paid it no mind.
“Come on, Dashie. It’s time to eat.” Windy Whistles crooned. Rainbow nodded and followed her parents down to the kitchen. However, when she got to the stairs she couldn’t manage to get a good grip on the stair, the thick padding between her legs making it almost impossible to get down. She started to try and fly again, but the odd feeling that gave her made her return quickly to the ground. However, in her flight, however short it may have been, she had moved just a few centimeters forward, and because of that her hooves lost any grip they may have had on the ground, and it sent her tumbling down the stairs, landing in a heap at the bottom. For a moment or two her confusion took hold of her and she didn’t really have a thought about the incident. Then, however, a new sensation took hold of her, one that made her freeze completely.
Her diaper was wet.
Her mind reeled with shock. How had that even happened?! Well, okay, she knew how it had happened. But she couldn’t figure out why it had happened. She hadn’t even had to go. Though the more she thought about it, she had had to earlier, but the pressure had gone away for a short while. Perhaps the shock from her fall had just made her involuntarily release her bladder. As she rationalized everything, the feeling of her wet diaper became more apparent. She paused again, taking in the odd feeling. It wasn’t exactly unpleasant. It was just… strange.
It took her a minute to realize that her parents were staring worriedly at her. When she realized it, her cheeks burned fiercely. Shame enveloped her, and she tried to cover her face with her hooves. Tears came streaming down her face, though they were tears of embarrassment instead of discomfort.
It didn’t take a scientist for Windy and Bow to realize what happened. Although they did mistake her tears for those of pain. Windy went up to her daughter, helped her to her hooves, and wrapped her own hooves around Rainbow. Rainbow felt her tears seeping into her mother’s coat. Windy Whistles Rubbed her back as her daughter cried. She whispered reassurances into her daughter’s ear.
“It’s alright, sweetheart. Everypony has accidents now and then. It doesn’t matter.” She said soothingly.
“B-But-“ Rainbow’s reply was cut off by her mother putting a hoof to her lips and hushing her.
“Shhh. Everything is alright.” Windy Whistles promised. Then she turned to her husband. “Bow, would you-?”
“Way ahead of you.” Said Bow, flying down the stairs carrying changing supplies. Rainbow covered her face with her hooves. This was by far the most humiliating moment of her life. But at least the only ponies present were her parents, who would never judge her or think less of her for it. She derived small comfort from that. Windy took a fresh diaper under her wing but first she took a pacifier from her husband and popped it into a surprised Rainbow’s mouth. She almost spat it out, but when she took in a breath to do so and sucked on it she found it rather nice. The feeling plucked a string in her memory. Something pleasant from long ago. She found herself suckling automatically. For a moment, she forgot about her current predicament and relaxed.
When Windy Whistles saw her daughter relax, she took her chance, wanting to make this as painless as possible for her. She hummed a gentle tune and began the work of changing her daughter. She untaped the diaper, and Rainbow shivered as the cool air touched her private area, pulling her from her relaxation. The embarrassment creeped back in, but not as strongly as before. Windy balled up the diaper and set it aside. Then, she carefully wiped her daughter clean, not missing an inch of her. She rubbed on rash cream just to be safe, and then poured a generous amount of foal powder on Rainbow, before taping her up into a fresh diaper.
“There we go. All clean!” Cooed Windy Whistles. “See? There’s no mess. Nothing to worry about.” She soothed.
Rainbow let the words sink in, and curiously kicked her leg. The puffy diaper crinkled, and the sound somehow made her giggle. She had wet herself, and now she was clean. There was no mess, no trace left of her residual embarrassment. She didn’t want to admit it to herself, but she thought she might be enjoying this treatment. And looking up at the smiling faces of her parents made her feel so happy. She had done this out of guilt but now she was really starting to enjoy herself. The attention, affection, and care her parents were lavishing on her made her feel even more confident and secure in herself than she ever had been. In that moment, her pride and embarrassment completely dissipated, and she felt happiness flow through her unlike anything she had ever felt before, and she broke out into a huge grin.
“Awww. There’s my happy little filly. Do you like feeling all clean now?” Windy crooned.
Rainbow decided in that moment to throw herself into the role as completely as she could, for herself just as much as her parents. She giggled.
“Yeah!” She said, happily, though the word was muffled by the pacifier in her mouth. She reached up to her mother, who happily held her in her hooves. Rainbow snuggled into the warmth of her mother’s coat. When her mother pulled away, the two beamed at one another. Just a moment later, Rainbow’s stomach growled again. She giggled and took out her pacifier. “Hungry, Mommy!”
“Well let’s get something yummy in that tummy, then!” Said Windy Whistles. She pecked her daughter on the cheek, then headed to the kitchen. Rainbow was about to follow her, when suddenly she was being lifted onto her father’s back. She squealed at the sudden change. Bow Hot Hoof chuckled.
“Come on, Dashie. Let’s take a little ride around the house while Mommy gets you lunch, hmm?”
Rainbow laughed. “Yeah, Daddy! Fly!” She said, giggling.
“Are you holding on tight?” He asked. Rainbow adjusted her grip and then nodded. “Okay! The Wonderbolts are taking off in three, two, one!” He said, before taking off. Rainbow cheered and laughed as her father circled the living room. He flew throughout the house- up the stairs, through the rooms, and finally landing in the kitchen, where Windy Whistles waited. She had just finished making her daughter her lunch, and smiled when she saw her daughter riding on her husband’s back. “Alright, honey. The Wonderbolts are making a pit stop!” Said Bow. Rainbow giggled and hopped off her father’s back. She wobbled a bit when she landed, but she was beginning to grow used to the bulk between her legs. She was grateful when she sat down, though. Her mother set a bowl of applesauce in front of her, and she licked her lips in excitement. Her mother sat down beside her, and grabbed the spoon from the bowl, and began to feed her daughter. Rainbow excitedly opened her mouth and let the spoon in, humming happily as the applesauce hit her tongue. It wasn’t quite as good as Applejack’s recipe, but it was good all the same.
“Good girl, Dashie!” Praised Windy Whistles. Rainbow Dash beamed at the praise, and her father took the spoon and fed her another bite of applesauce.
“Spitfire’s coming in for a landing!” He said, making plane noises and making the spoon twirl in the air. Rainbow clapped her hooves and opened her mouth. The applesauce was warm as it slid down her throat, leaving a warm feeling in her throat and stomach.
Together, they fed Rainbow Dash until the applesauce was gone. However, the applesauce didn’t fill her up all of the way. She still felt hungry. Windy Whistles was well aware of this fact. There had always been a certain face that she made when she was full, one she doubted Rainbow even knew she had. She got up from her seated position and went back into the kitchen, returning with a plate of carrots she had mashed herself. Rainbow Dash ate the mashed food until the plate was empty. Leaning back, she finally felt full. She sighed contentedly. Windy saw her making her I’m-full face, and smiled. Knowing what would come next, she looked to her husband, who seemed to have read her mind, and was preparing her a bottle.
“Mommy, I thirsty.” Whined Rainbow Dash.
“Daddy’s making you a bottle.” Windy placated. Rainbow reached her hooves up to her mother, wanting to be held.
“Up?” She asked.
Windy swooped down and cradled her daughter in her hooves. She nuzzled her gently, beaming at her little filly with pride.
“Mommy loves you so much, sweetheart. More than you could ever imagine.” She said, kissing her daughter on the forehead. Rainbow snuggled into her further.
“I love Mommy.” She said. Windy smiled.
It was then that Bow Hot Hoof returned with a warm bottle of milk. Rainbow saw it and reached for it, giggling, “Baba!”
“Calm down, baby. It’s not going anywhere.” Windy soothed as Bow placed the nipple in her mouth. Rainbow began to suck, drawing out the warm milk just a little at a time. But she wasn’t satisfied with the amount of milk coming into her mouth, so she started sucking faster. “Slow down, sweetheart. You don’t want to get a tummy ache.”
Rainbow began to whine in frustration. Bow hushed her. “It’s alright, little trotter. Everything is just fine.” He said, running a hoof through her mane. Rainbow settled again, still not satisfied, but somehow much more calm. She could feel her father’s strong hoof in her mane, making her feel safe. She could hear her mother’s heartbeat in her ear, making her calm. Everything was just perfect.
When the bottle was empty, Rainbow burped and found herself chewing on the nipple. Her eyes were beginning to droop shut. After her long flight, her crying fit, and the combination of a full stomach and warm bottle, she felt incredibly sleepy. She yawned and snuggled deeper into her mother’s warmth.
“I think somepony needs a nap.” Windy Whistles crooned. Rainbow didn’t bother to refute it. Bow and Windy shared a happy look, and both stared at their daughter, who looked so precious, still chewing and suckling a bit at the bottle. Bow was quick to replace the bottle with a pacifier, which Rainbow gratefully accepted. Windy Whistles began to gently rock her daughter in her hooves. She started to gently sing to her little girl.
“We’ve come such a long, long way
And I’ve loved you from the very first day
I loved watching you grow and seeing what you do
Despite all you’ve been through
And in all these ways you’ve made me proud of you
We may live far apart
but that means nothing to my heart
despite the distance of nearly 2000 miles
I would cross all just to see you smile
You’re my gift sent from above
You Taught me all about a mothers love
You are what I waited for
Doesn’t matter what happened before
It doesn’t matter what all I’ve been through
because every heart break led me straight to you
and maybe someday you’ll let me sing along
to the end of your own song.”
By the end of the song, Rainbow was fast asleep. Bow and Windy both went upstairs and tucked Rainbow into her bed. Windy pressed a kiss to her daughter’s forehead.
“Goodnight, sweetheart.”
Bow repeated the act. “Sweet dreams, baby girl.”
They both looked at one another, pressing their heads together. This was the best day they could remember. With one last loving look at their daughter, they went downstairs.
______________________________________________________________________________
Rainbow found herself on a cloud, not far from her parents’ home. She flew toward the Cloudsdale home and entered.
“Mom? Dad?” She called. She checked every room of the house, but no one was there. Logically, she knew that they might be somewhere else, but emotionally, she felt her heart sink. Trying to quell her rising panic, she decided to try and go home.
When she got there, she went to Tank’s part of the room, only to find it empty.
“Tank? Tank?!” She called. She checked her home, but he was gone. Her panic skyrocketed, and she raced to Twilight’s castle.
“Twilight! I need your help! Tank is-“ She stopped, realizing the castle was empty too.
Now she was beginning to hyperventilate. She raced around town.
Fluttershy’s cottage? Empty.
Sweet Apple Acres? Vacant.
The Carousel Boutique? Abandoned.
Sugarcube Corner? Free of all occupants.
All of Ponyville was deserted.
Suddenly, the world around her dissipated and there was blackness all around. She was completely and utterly alone.
Being left alone was something she had always feared. Deep down, her self image had cracks. Love and support from friends and family had always been the rock solid foundation on which her confidence was built. But now, all of that was gone. She felt herself beginning to cry. Her parents, her friends, her pet, all of them were gone.
She was all alone. And nopony would ever be around her again.
______________________________________________________________________________
Rainbow awoke with a start, gasping for breath. She heaved, trying to steady herself. Uncontrollable tears started to streak down her cheeks, and she started to sob. She was alone. No one would ever see her again. She curled up on her side, unaware that she was even in her parents’ home. She put her hooves over her eyes, and gave into her grief.
The sobbing soon grew loud enough for her parents to hear. Windy Whistles felt her maternal instincts go into overdrive and, at a speed that would have made her daughter proud, she raced to Rainbow Dash’s room, and was met with a sight that broke her heart. There lay her daughter, sobbing desperately on her bed. Windy felt her heart break inside of her, and raced over to her baby.
“Oh sweetheart, it’s alright. Mommy’s here. Mommy’s got you. Shhh. It’s alright.” She soothed.
At the sound of her mother’s voice, Rainbow moved her hooves.
“M-Mommy?”
“Mommy’s right here, Rainbow Dash.”
Rainbow felt her eyes well up with tears at the sight and sound of her mother. She threw her hooves around her mother’s neck and sobbed, releasing her fears. Windy Whistles cradled her daughter, bouncing her lightly as she whispered words of comfort in her ear. Bow Hot Hoof arrived in shortly after, and was quick to join his wife in comforting their daughter. When Windy tried to pull away, Rainbow tightened her grip on her mother and whimpered.
“No.” She whined.
“No what, sweetheart?” She asked, confused.
“No leave.” She whispered.
“We’re not going anywhere, Dashie.” Said Bow, gently.
Rainbow let out another sob, but this one was one of relief. She wasn’t alone after all. The warmth of her parents surrounded her, and made her feel safe. For the first time it was beginning to sink in that the dream was only that: A dream. The entire time she cried, her parents held her and comforted her. They didn’t think for one instant to leave her. Windy and Bow both knew that a dream had sparked what they considered to be a sort of meltdown, but they had no idea of what that dream had entailed. When Rainbow had finally cried herself out, her mother cautiously pulled away, not wanting to startle her daughter further.
“Sweetie, what was your bad dream about?” Windy asked. Rainbow paused. She wasn’t quite sure how to explain it. That feeling of being alone and isolated began to creep back, but she tamped it down.
“Alone.” She said, simply. With that one word, Bow and Windy understood. Their little filly had always looked confident, but looks could be deceiving. Both of her parents knew that without support and the nurturance of friends and family, their daughter’s confidence would have shattered long ago. Even as a filly her worst nightmare had always been being by herself. Whenever she woke up in the night and someone wasn’t there, she had always panicked.
Though the nightmares had been relatively spaced out throughout her childhood, Windy and Bow had both become highly adept at knowing the signs of when their daughter was in the throes of a horrible nightmare. The only reason they hadn’t been able to see it this time was that none of the warnings were there. There was no talking in her sleep, nor was there any of the usual tossing and turning that always made her bed creak. There was no violent thrashing that knocked over nearby objects, or screaming to signal her distress. It was that that disturbed them the most. Where had the signs been? They felt terrible that they hadn’t been able to intervene and protect Rainbpw Dash from her own mind, despite knowing that there was nothing they could have done.
“Honey, you will never be alone.” Said Bow.
“That’s right. You will always have us.” Added Windy.
Rainbow smiled weakly and wiped at her eyes. Then, she cuddled into her parents again. She knew it was foalish, but she needed them close by.
Windy and Bow both looked at each other. Clearly Rainbow wasn’t ready to separate with them yet. But that was okay, because they weren’t ready to leave her either. But they needed a distraction. It was Bow who spoke up.
“How about we go downstairs and have some playtime, hmm?”
Rainbow’s eyes sparked with hope. “Please?”
“Of course, sweetheart.” Windy Whistles said gently.
Rainbow smiled and hugged her mother. Then, at his insistence, Rainbow hopped up onto her father’s back, and he flew her downstairs as fast as he could, just to try and make her laugh. It worked.
“There’s my happy girl.” Said Bow, smiling.
Rainbow giggled. A devious smile made it’s way onto Bow’s face- one that Rainbow Dash had undoubtedly learned from her father. Not two seconds after Rainbow was down from the ride, Bow tackled her so she was on her back, making her squeak in surprise. He pulled a loose feather from his wing and used it to tickle his daughter’s stomach, making her burst into laughter and squealing.
“Da-a-addy! S-Stop it!” She said, between fits of giggling.
Bow laughed a little himself and only carried on a few moments longer before finally relenting. He kissed his daughter on the forehead. Rainbow smiled at him happily. The smile faded when she realized she had wet herself when her father had tickled her. The last time she had done that she had felt ashamed, but this time, she didn’t feel embarrassed at all. It just seemed right, with how she felt at the moment. The warmth of the diaper felt good, and it made her happy.
However, it was at that moment that she felt a different bodily function needing to be tended to. Her eyes widened and she quickly got up from the floor. She needed the bathroom, and she needed it now. For the moment her adult brain overrode the little self that had slowly been drawn out of her, and she raced to the bathroom. Unfortunately for her the padding between her legs, which had already slowed her down, had swelled even more since it’s use. She tried to fly, but she couldn’t manage to get far. The diaper itself was not aerodynamically sound, and she was weighed down. She landed quickly on one of the steps, and galloped up the stairs. She tripped a few times, but made it. Then she raced to the bathroom. She tried to open the door, but her hoof slipped off. She grunted in frustration, and also in anxiety. Her hoof was slick with sweat from her panic. After two more slips, she finally got a grip on the doorknob, and entered the bathroom. She ran toward the toilet, and started to try and remove her diaper, but she couldn’t get it down. It was sticking to her body so tightly that she couldn’t get it off. She tried to push it down with her forehooves, but before she could, she found herself giving into the urge. She made one last desperate attempt to get the diaper off, but it was in vein, and very soon she felt a mess being pushed into her diaper. It seemed to take forever, but finally it was over.
Rainbow stood there, dumbstruck. She could not believe what she had just done. Though she could take some comfort in the fact that she had at least tried to get to the toilet. But the comfort was cold. Much like some of her diaper was beginning to get. It was the sensation of clamminess that drew her out of her shock. She shook her head in order to clear it and snap herself out of it. For the first time, she could feel the mess in her diaper. The way it rubbed against her felt disgusting, but the warmth was nice in contrast to the clamminess she had been feeling.
It was then that another thought occurred to her. Why had her diaper felt clammy? She had only wet it recently, right? She looked down at herself, and suddenly realized what had happened. Her diaper was leaking. It hadn’t been sweat on her hoof. It had been urine. She had been in such a rush to get upstairs that she hadn’t realized that her diaper had reached it’s limit. With a start, she realized that she had possibly wet herself after her nightmare and not realized it, then wet it again when her father was playing with her. However, this only added to her upset.
All of the thoughts and feelings became overwhelming for her, and she started to sob out her shame, panic, discomfort, and fear.
Bow Hot Hoof had watched his daughter run upstairs, and had gotten a pretty good idea of what had caused her sudden rush. Windy Whistles looked at her husband for a solid two seconds before they both heard the sound of their daughter sobbing. They both flew upstairs together, and Windy Whistles knocked on the door.
“Rainbow Dash? Are you alright, sweetheart?”
The maternal concern in her voice just made Rainbow cry harder. Her shame flowed down her face, and her cheeks turned bright red. The truth was that she was incredibly uncomfortable and desperately wanted to be changed, but her pride had once again risen past her new sense of playful innocence. She sniffled, trying to come to a decision.
Windy looked at her husband worriedly. However, Bow Hot Hoof seemed unusually calm. He knew exactly what had transpired downstairs, and he could only imagine how his daughter was feeling after having something like that happen. He knew that the best thing he could do was wait.
The minutes ticked by like hours, but finally, with a little whine, Rainbow opened the door. Her face was puffed from crying, and she looked incredibly scared, but her cheeks were flushed red. Windy Whistles looked at her daughter with compassion.
“It’s alright, sweetie. Everything’s okay.” She soothed.
The kind words tipped Rainbow over the edge, and she threw herself into her mother’s hooves. It didn’t take more than two seconds for Windy to see what had happened. No wonder her daughter was upset. She held her for a long while, and whispered comforts in her ear. When she felt her daughter beginning to squirm, she pulled away.
“Let’s get you changed.” She said. Rainbow chose not to fight it. She desperately needed a change. Bow had already grabbed the changing supplies. Windy was swift in her movements, quickly changing her daughter and cleaning her up. But, she sensed that her daughter still felt unclean. So she began running hot water for a bath. Rainbow heard the water and relaxed marginally. Her fears of judgement seemed silly now. Her mother’s swift and skilled movements were so matter-of-fact that it seemed almost natural. Still, that didn’t stop her from feeling embarrassed. Her mother didn’t seem to notice, or if she did, she hid it well. When the sodden diaper was disposed of, Windy helped her daughter into the tub while Bow went downstairs to clean up, leaving mother and daughter by themselves.
Rainbow was silent for a long time, trying to find the right words to say to her mother. She was a ball of emotions, ready to unravel at any moment. Today had made her unexplainably happy, but now in the aftermath of her messing, she felt herself teetering back toward shame. After several more minutes, Rainbow spoke up.
“Mommy?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Am I gross?”
“Of course not, sweetie! Why would you think that?”
Rainbow looked down, her ears back.
Windy internally chastised herself for her lapse in intelligence. “Rainbow Dash, look at me.”
Rainbow looked up, worried, yet curious.
“Honey, you had an accident. That’s nothing to be ashamed of. It happens to everyone. That’s why you have diapers. They’re there to protect you. There was nothing that couldn’t be cleaned up. Accidents are okay. They’re a part of life. And you don’t need to be ashamed because you had one, or because you needed a little help, especially from us. We’re your parents. Helping you with the big messes or even little ones is what we’re here for. And you’re always going to be our precious little girl. Nothing can ever change that. I promise.” Windy Whistles kissed her daughter on the forehead.
Rainbow Dash smiled up at her mother, feeling a weight lifted off of her shoulders. As her mother scrubbed her clean, she felt herself relax again. Accidents were okay. She kept repeating that to herself, and after a while it started to sink in.
When she finally felt better, she started to play in the tub. She was Daring Do, searching for the underwater cave that held secret treasure. She dove underwater, looking for the cave. Finally, after days and nights of searching, she had found it. The treasure was just ahead, and she could see it just behind the entryway. She grabbed the box and was about to make a getaway when suddenly a giant electric eel appeared, winding along her path to the treasure. It was scary, but she would not be deterred. She went headfirst at the eel, narrowly dodging a shock. She knew she had to get out of there, and quickly before the eel could catch her. She swam hard and fast, but the eel was gaining on her. She was almost to the surface when the eel wrapped itself around her leg and tried to pull her down. Luckily for her, there was a tiny dagger in the chest. She quickly grabbed it and stabbed the eel, causing it to let out a silent cry of anguish. The water around her was stained red with blood, but she didn’t care. She finally swam to the surface, and took a big breath of air. She had done it. She had gotten the sacred treasure.
When Rainbow broke through the water, some of it sloshed over the edge of the tub and soaked her mother. Windy Whistles chuckled.
“Sweetheart, are you trying to soak Mommy?”
“Mommy, I found treasure!” She said proudly, holding up a bath toy.
“Well so you did!” She said proudly. She kissed her daughter’s cheek. “But all little ocean explorers have to come out eventually. I think it’s about time to get out.”
“Do I have to?” She pouted.
“Yes, sweetie. It’s time to get out.” She said. Rainbow frowned, but didn’t complain. Her mother lovingly dried her off, and then got her into another diaper. “There we go! That’s my little filly!” She said, smiling.
Rainbow giggled as her mother helped her onto her hooves. “Shall we go see what Daddy’s been up to while you were taking your bath?”
Rainbow nodded and followed her mother down the stairs. There, her father was waiting.
“There’s my little Wonderbolt!” He said, giving her a hug. Rainbow giggled.
“What’cha doin’, Daddy?” She asked, curious. Bow chuckled.
“Getting ready to play with my girl, of course!” He said, ruffling her hair playfully. “What do you want to do, honey?”
“Hmmm…” She mused, before her eyes lit up with an idea. “Draw?”
“Sure!” Said Windy and Bow together.
Together, they all drew. When Rainbow was done, she held up her picture proudly. “Us!” She said.
Windy and Bow looked up. The picture had Rainbow Dash sandwiched in between her two parents, holding their hooves. They both smiled.
“That’s going on the fridge!” Said Bow. Rainbow grinned and gave her parents a hug.
For a while they drew together, until dinnertime approached. Windy, Bow, and Rainbow Dash all converged in the kitchen, helping to make dinner. Broccoli, carrots, and asparagus. Bow and Windy fed their daughter together, each taking turns, then ate their dinner together while Rainbow Dash drank a bottle. When all of them were full, they went into the living room again to play. They played leap frog, airplane, and pretend. It was the most fun Rainbow Dash had had since her first Wonderbolts performance. Eventually though, Rainbow began to yawn. Her parents took note of this, and decided it was time to wind down. Windy picked up her daughter and carried her upstairs.
Rainbow yawned. “Where we goin’, Mommy?”
“It’s bedtime for you, little one.” She said, soothingly.
“Awwwww.” She said, disappointed. Windy kissed her daughter.
“Go brush your teeth, and then I’ll read you a story.”
“‘Kay!”
While Rainbow flew to the bathroom, Windy waited for her daughter to return, when Bow came upstairs carrying a bottle. Windy looked at her husband gratefully, and gave him a tender kiss before Rainbow returned. Windy tucked her daughter into bed and Bow handed her the bottle.
“Ready for story time?” Windy asked. Rainbow Dash nodded, suckling at the bottle. “Alright. Once upon a time, there was a mighty hero named Gusty The Great…”
As the story wore on, Rainbow felt her eyes grow heavy, but fought to hear the end of the story.
“…And Gusty The Great was remembered as the greatest heroine of all time. The end.”
Windy pressed a kiss to her daughter’s forehead. “Goodnight, sweetheart.”
Bow kissed her on the nose. “Sleep tight, Dashie.”
Just before the two crossed the threshold of the doorway, a small voice stopped them.
“Mommy? Daddy?”
“Yes, honey?” Asked Bow.
“Can we do this again?”
Bow and Windy smiled. “Anytime you want.”
Rainbow smiled. “I love you.”
“We love you too, Sweetheart.” Said Windy, gently closing the door.
With that, Rainbow turned onto her right side, and fell asleep smiling.
