To say the night was perfect would be a very big understatement. Oh, yes, the princess of the night had outdone herself tonight. Many stars shinned tonight; forming all sorts of constellations. While the moon itself shinned its brightest reflective light. Yes, tonight was a very beautiful night. Out on the front porch of a cottage sat Discord. He stared up at the sky with a peaceful expression. A glass full of chocolate milk in his talon hand. While his tail gently rocked him back and forth in the chair he sat in. A gentle breeze then passed over his body; it made him sigh in peace. Before he took a sip from his glass. Some of it disappearing like liquid into his maw. He looked around at the home; thinking about how blessed he was to be free. How grateful he was to the mare that had reformed him. How happy he was to be her husband; and how excited he was for being a future father. He looked down into his glass of milk; his reflection stared right back up at him.
“Nervous?” His own reflection asked.
Discord released another sigh, “I am,” He responded before looking out in front of him. Focusing on the small river that flowed in front of the cottage, “I've never been a father before; so, this will be completely new to me and her.” He finished as he brought the glass to his maw. Taking another sip from the glass.
“If you are nervous then you must imagine how she must feel,” His reflection spoke, “After all she has never been a mother before.” It finished just as he brought the glass down.
“I know, I know,” He replied as the thoughts of fatherhood raced through his head, “Neither of us know what parenthood is like,” A smile then stretched across his face, “But, I've never seen her look so happy before.” He finished as he remembered the night they made the decision to become parents.
(Four months ago.)
Discord was on top of the cottage looking up at the night sky. In the distance he could hear the roar of thunder; and just outside of his field of vision. He could see flashes of lightning from the storm. He sighed as he looked up at the stars; watching their twinkling lights shine in the darkness of the night. His head rested in his hands; his legs were crossed and a serious looked had etched itself onto his face. It was then he heard the flapping of wings; just before he felt the sound of hoofsteps making their way towards him. He shifted his head to look at who was approaching him. Only to see the kind face of his wife looking back at him. He smiled back at her as she sat down next to him.
“It's cold out,” She said as she pulled a blanket she was carrying off her back. Before she layed it over him, “I didn't want you catching a cold.” She finished as he moved over a little. Allowing her to cuddle with him; her warm body snuggling up to his slightly cool body. She heard him sigh as he wrapped his paw around her.
The two lay there in silence; listening to the sound of thunder in the distance. While they gazed up at the sky. Nothing needed to be said; because everything was perfect for them. They were in each others loving embrace. Sharing and feeling the others warmth. Yes, this night was the perfect night for them. As they lay together Fluttershy took notice of the expression on Discords face. It was a serious expression almost like he was deep in thought.
“Everything alright love?” She asked.
He nodded as he pulled her a little closer to him, “Yeah, I'm just thinking.” He answered.
“About what?” She asked before she rested her head on his neck.
She heard him sigh, “Fluttershy,” He began before he began to process the words he was about to speak, “Are you happy?” He asked her.
“That's a silly question,” She replied as she nuzzled him, “You know I'm always happy when I'm with you.” She finished.
“I know. But, are you happy with us?” He asked her feeling her head shift itself upwards; allowing her to look at him?
“Of course I am. Why wouldn't I be?” She responded in a voice filled with confusion.
It was then He shifted and moved himself over top of her. Allowing him to look her in the eye. She stared up into his multicolored eyes. While he stared back into her eyes. They were completely silent; he then gently kissed her and she returned the kiss. They broke the kiss a few seconds later.
“Fluttershy,” He said as he moved his head closer to her ear, “I want us to have a child.” He whispered.
She gasped as she sat up while he moved off to the side. She turned towards him and stared at him. Her eyes as wide as saucers. She remembered about a week ago when she mentioned how she dreamed about becoming a mother. And, she also remembered how he had become almost distant. How she caught him focusing heavily on something; almost as if he was thinking really hard about something. She looked at him and saw him gently smiling at her.
“Discord,” She began having a little trouble finding her voice, “I....I don't want to pressure.” She was silenced by him pressing a gentle talon against her maw.
He then shook his head, “I want this also dear,” He said as he pulled her into a gentle hug, “I've thought long about this. But, the more I think about it; the more I realize how right it would be,” He continued as he gently rubbed the back of her head, “I want us to have a foal, Fluttershy,” He then moved back and looked her in the eyes again, “I want us to become parents.” He finished.
Fluttershy felt tears falling from her eyes as she looked at her husband. Who was smiling back at her. Then in a movement faster than she had ever made before; she jumped forward and pinned him on his back. While she shouted, “Let's have a baby!”
“Hey!” Discord shouted in a playful tone, “Not on the roof! Not on the roof!”
(The present)
“I bet after that night; both of you had many “busy” nights.” His reflection commented with a sly wink and grin.
Discord chuckled at the comment, “There were times I was sore and stiff in the morning.” He responded.
“In more ways than one.” His reflection responded; causing him to look down at his reflection in annoyance.
He shook his head and finished the last of the glass. Before he through it off in the distance; an explosion followed shortly after. He then relaxed back into the chair and gazed back up at the night sky. But, a small sniffle quickly caught his attention. He turned to look at the doorway and saw his wife standing there. He quickly got next to her; allowing him to see her tear stained face.
“Dear, what's?” He was interrupted by her suddenly hugging him.
He returned her hug with a gentle hug of his own. He held her close as he gently rubbed the back of her head; trying his best to calm his wife down. He could feel her shaking a little as she whimpered. He didn't need to be told what happened. Very carefully he lifted her up and carried her back up stairs. She pressed herself against his chest; listening to the gentle beating of his heart. Discord looked down at his wife. He saw a smile on her face; a smile that filled his heart with so much warmth and love. When he reached the top of the stairs; he began to slowly walk to their bedroom.
Their bedroom was large enough to hold both of them; just like the bed that was placed underneath a rounded window. He walked over to her side of the bed and gently placed her down. When he backed away; he saw a pleading, almost begging look on her face. He then kissed her on her forehead only to suddenly appear behind her. He gently wrapped his paw around her. While he pressed his forehead against the back of hers. Before his eyes he saw the nightmare that had plagued her just moments ago.
He saw her laying in the middle of their home. She was crying heavily as he stood at the door; suitcase in talon and a look of hatred on his face. He heard himself say words of profanity; calling her a weak and pathetic excuse of a mare. Just, before he stormed out of the home; slamming the door shut on his way out. Leaving her all alone in their home; slowly all around her everything faded away. Leaving her alone in an endless void of darkness. Which eventually swallowed her whole. He pulled his head away from her; tears of sorrow streaking down his face. His wife then turned to face him. Tears falling from her eyes once more; the two then hugged each other.
A few seconds later they broke the hug and just stared into each others eyes. The didn't need to say anything to each other. They just need to be within each others loving embrace. But, eventually the silence was broken by Discord.
“Fluttershy,” He spoke causing her gaze to focus on him, “You know I will never leave you, right?” He asked.
She nodded before resting her head into his chest again, “I know.” She responded.
He began to gently rub the back of her head again, “But, the nightmare was about something else. Wasn't it?” He asked her and she nodded.
“Yes, I'm afraid of being left alone,” She responded as she looked up at him, “I'm afraid of being alone.” She finished.
He then gently wrapped his body around her; being extra careful around her swollen stomach. He could feel their child gently moving inside of her. Its small limbs gently rubbing against his long body. He stopped when the side of his head rested against hers.
“Fluttershy, may I tell you something?” He asked her and she nodded.
“Long ago I learned something,” He began as he remembered very old words of wisdom that were told to him, “Whenever a creature is born into this world. They are not born alone,” Fluttershy grew a little confused at that statement, “You see right now many others are with us right now. I felt them earlier just after sunset,” Now she was more confused; she was tempted to ask him what he was talking about. But, she didn't know how to ask him, “They know how we want to become parents. They saw me talking to my reflection in my drink,” He then gently nuzzled her, “But, they also saw how afraid you were. And, some of them know exactly how you feel,” He then looked up through the window; Fluttershy also looked up with him, “In fact they are watching us right now.” He said.
“They are?” Fluttershy asked.
Discord nodded, “Yes, right now some of them are wishing to take your pain away. While others are shocked about us knowing of their existence,” He then smiled gently, “Some are wishing that it was they and not me laying with a beautiful mare like you,” He then gently kissed her on the cheek which caused her to blush, “And, just like we are to them. They are connect to us and all we have to do is think about them,” He continued to explain, “Close your eyes and listen closely. You may just be able to hear them.” He finished.
Fluttershy did as he said and closed her eyes and started to listen. At first she heard nothing; that was until a whisper echoed in the darkness. It sounded confused, puzzled, wondering how she could hear him. Another soon followed but it was a little louder.
“Can she actually hear me?” A gentle female voice asked.
“Man, this story is a load of bull!” An annoyed male voice shouted.
“What in the world is this? Why is this author just writing random lines?” Another female voice asked.
“Whoa, this is strange. Never read a story like this.” It was a another female voice but it sounded younger.
“I know how you feel, Fluttershy. I hate it when him alone.”
“If I could I would take away all your sadness right now. Just so I can help you be happy.”
Fluttershy couldn't believe it; all those voice they were all talking to her. She could feel them all of them. It filled her heart with an endless amount of happiness. A single tear escaped from her eye; but it was one of happiness not of sadness.
“I wish I had someone to hold me right now.” She couldn't tell who that voice belonged to. But, she was going to answer.
“I'm here,” She whispered to the voice, “You're not alone.” She finished.
