Under the Influence
The cask of hard cider fell to the ground with a tremendous crash. Berry Punch jumped at the noise, spinning around to face the other pony.
“Careful!” She dashed over to the barrel, shoving the delivery pony out of the way. Bending over, she examined it. Groaning, she ran her hoof parallel to the crack that had formed where the cask had hit the ground. “Shoot! I’m gonna be on short now! H-how am I supposed to rival Pinkie Pie in partying if I’m one short?”
The delivery pony shrugged. “Look, ma’am, you have 14 barrels of booze here. Unless you’re planning to try and get the whole town drunk, you’ll be fine.”
“But I am!” Berry cried. “I’ve been putting up posters for a week now!” She got real close to the delivery pony and growled. “If I can’t beat Pinkie this one time, I’ll never hear the end of it!”
“Ma’am, I—”
Berry sighed and said, “Look, just bring another cask to replace this one and it’ll all be good. Mkay?”
The delivery pony gasped and backed up. He kept his eyes on Berry until he’d exited the pavillion and gotten into his wagon. Without another look back, he snapped the reigns and the team of ponies pulling the cart took off.
Berry Punch shook her head and frowned. Turning her attention to the splintered cask, she put a hoof against it and shoved. It bounced down the stairs and landed on the gravel path with a thud. The crack widened, branching in several places. The rest of the cider gushed out into the flower bed of roses that lined the pavilion.
“Flowers don’t drink cider, silly!’
Yelping in surprise, Berry looked up to find herself snout to snout with Pinkie Pie. “Holy! Wh... how...? Don’t do that!” She rapidly backed up, nearly tripping over the table in the center of the building. The snacks on it rocked dangerously. She quickly turned around and wrapped her forehooves around the bowls of food.
Pinkie skipped around the table just in time to steady a large, glass bowl of punch and a plate container of hay fries. “Sorry. I thought you were looking, but apparently you weren’t.” She carefully took the snacks that Berry had in her hooves and lay them neatly back on the table. “So, how’s the party prep coming?”
Berry wiped her brow and leaned back against the railing as she watched Pinkie rearrange the snacks. “Not too shabby. Just got the hard cider delivered. One cask short, but he should be back before the party,” she replied.
Pinkie blinked, her hoof coming to an abrupt stop as she pushed the punch over a few spots. “H-hard cider?” she stammered. “A-are you sure that’s a good idea?”
Waving a hoof nonchalantly, Berry giggled. “Don’t you worry. I may say hard cider, but it’s actually barely got any alcohol in it. Only just enough so ponies’ll get buzzed.” She pushed herself off the railing and draped a leg over Pinkie’s shoulders and said, “Trust me, they’ll have more fun. It’s like being drunk without being drunk.”
“If you say so,” Pinkie replied, raising an eyebrow as she removed Berry’s hoof from her shoulder. “But I still think best party bets are won with cupcakes and streamers. Not alcohol you silly filly.”
Berry scoffed and picked up a hay fry. “If I did that, I’d be copying you,” she mumbled around the mush in her mouth. Swallowing, she pointed up at the sky. “Hopefully, Rainbow Dash’ll get rid of all those gray, fluffy clouds out of the way before tonight. It’d be a shame if it rained.” Berry turned to Pinkie Pie and grinned. “Right?”
“Well duh. No one likes to party wet.” Pinkie Pie returned the grin and giggled. “Unless it’s a water balloon fight. Or a beach party at the pond, but that’s not much of a—”
“I get the idea.” Berry patted Pinkie on the back and rolled her eyes. “That’s why I chose to hold the party at the pavillion.”
She turned around looking at the wide, cone shaped roof overhead. The supports had just been replaced with new planks and the actual roof had been reshingled the week previously. The frame however, still needed to be replaced. The wood coming down needed a fresh coat of paint to replace the one that was peeling off. The railing had gouges all along it where splinters had been torn out to prevent ponies from accidentally stabbing their legs when they leaned on it. The stairs leading up also looked weathered, except it no longer had any paint on it and there was a large chunk missing from the side of the last stair up.
“Yup, this building has seen its share of parties,” Pinkie said, following Berry’s gaze. “But the large field around it makes it optimal for party games like Freeze Tag and Red Rover. Say! What games do you have—”
“Don’t worry about it,” Berry reassured Pinkie. “I got it all planned out. It’s gonna be a blast and it’s gonna outdo any party you can throw. You’ll be there to see that, won’t you?” asked Berry.
Pinkie nodded and smiled widely. “Would Ponyville’s number one party pony miss something this big?”
“No, I bet you wouldn’t. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to blow up these balloons and tie them to the pavillion entrances and then I should be good to go.” Berry trotted over to a pack laying on its side by the snack table and dug around in it. A few seconds later, she pulled out a bag of balloons and tossed them on the table. “Eight o'clock sharp! Not three hours and five minutes from now. Not two hours and fifty-five minutes from now. Three hours. Don’t forget it!”
Pinkie Pie waved good bye and bounced out of the pavillion. “Don’t worry! I’ll be here on the dot and ready to have some fun!”
As she ripped open the package of balloons, Berry mumbled, “Oh, you shall have fun all right. At least, if everything goes according to plan.”
Berry Punch yelped and jumped back as a cloud slammed into the ground next to her and burst with a small poof.
“Ahaha! That look on your face. Priceless!” Rainbow Dash cried as she deftly jumped down from the single tree, an oak tree, that sat alongside the path. “If I had a bit for every time I managed to surprise a pony, I’d be rolling in money!”
Patting her chest, Berry Punch joined in laughing. “Y-yeah. You got me good. It does help help that most ponies don’t expect surprises to come from the sky.” She took a deep breath to calm her racing heart and then shook Rainbow Dash’s hoof. “Glad you could make it though. Nice job with the clouds.”
“No problem! It’s the least I could do after accidentally scheduling a thunderstorm on your birthday.” Rainbow Dash turned her gaze up and admired the night sky. “Anyways, Luna made sure that the moon was nice and full today. Big too. It looks amazing around the smattering of stars.”
“You’re beginning to sound like me, Dash.” Twilight trotted up to the stairs, joining Berry and Dash in looking at the night sky. “Did you know that—”
Dash rolled her eyes and trotted into the pavilion. “I’m not that much of an egghead, Twi’. Now come on! Let’s go find AJ. She’s probably over by the cider barrels testing the stuff Berry got. If it’s good, she’ll already be tispy.”
Berry stopped Twilight just as she trotted up the stairs. “Hey, you haven’t seen Pinkie Pie, have you? She said she’d show up at eight and now she’s five minutes late.”
Shaking her head, Twilight said, “Nope. Sorry.” She trotted after Dash and disappeared into the crowd of mingling ponies.
“It’s not gonna be much of a party if Pinkie doesn’t show up,” Berry groaned. She turned and gestured at the DJ to turn up the music and the a second later, the bass resonated through the pavilion. Then she trotted down the path until the music only thrummed in the background. She sat down and stared at the sky. “I’m not going in until—”
“Hey! What are you doing out here? The party is over there, you silly goose!’
Berry looked around quickly, confused as to where the voice had come from. Seeing no pony, she looked up and gasped. Pinkie hovered several yards above Berry on her flying contraption.
She giggled and steered it over to a clear spot to land. Once it was on the ground, she hopped off and bounced over to Berry. “Sorry I’m late. I was about to leave when I remembered that I wanted to arrive in style, but my peddle flying thingy needed to be oiled. I did that and just couldn’t resist giving it a quick shinedown as well.
Berry stared in awe at the contraption. Its propellers, its supports, the thing frame, even the pedals gleamed in the moonlight. It was so clean, it looked like the red stripes had been repainted on around the white stripes.
“Wow... you did a really good job. I didn’t even hear the propeller,” Berry said.
“I know! You see, the secret is to use a lot of oil, even if you think you have too much.” Pinkie Pie shook her head and turned her gaze over to the party. “But I didn’t come here to talk about flying. I came here to have fun!”
Laughing, Berry and Pinkie galloped to the building, only stopping at the base of the stairs so they wouldn’t crash into anypony. Breathing hard, they trotted through, dodging the other party-goers as they walked around carrying plates of snacks or swung their hips to the music’s beat. They reached the snack table and when Berry walked right past it, Pinkie looked at her curiously.
“Uh... sorry. I want to get a mug of cider first.” Berry pointed towards the casks that lined the wall. “I’ll join you in a few seconds. Just wait here.”
Humming happily, Berry gently pushed her way through the crowd and found herself standing next to Applejack seconds later. Berry nodded at the other mare as she grabbed a mug and opened up the tap. The cider gushed out and into the mug stopping just as the foam was about to spill out. She closed the tap and chugged the drink.
“Yah know, pardner, this may not be be from Sweet Apple Acres, but ah know quality when ah taste it.” Applejack turned around to face Berry and raised her drink. “Not too strong and the alcohol isn’t so overbearing that ah can’t taste the apple.” She grabbed the mug from Berry and filled it. “But yah need to drink slower or it’s lost on yah.” Applejack had to shout to be heard over the thrumming of the bass.
Berry nodded, but downed that mug in a few gulps as well. “Not enough to get a pony drunk off just a few, though. If I weren’t mindful of other pony’s tastes, I would have gotten the real hard stuff.” She filled her cup up yet again. “But eight or nine more of these and I’ll be a step above buzzed. Just the way I like it.”
Already, she could see a bit of the familiar fuzziness at the edge of her vision. She raised her glass to Applejack in a silent cheer. Their mugs thunked together and cider sloshed over the edges. Berry turned back to the cask and grabbed a second cup, filling it. Balancing it on her back, she made her way through the rapidly moving crowd in search of Pinkie Pie.
A few seconds later, Berry found Pinkie right where she had left her. She nodded back at the mug of cider and Pinkie took it. “Try it! It’s amazing, just like I said it would,” Berry shouted to be heard.
“I don’t drink.”
“Come on!” Berry needled. “I told you, it’s weak! It couldn’t even get a foal drunk!”
Pinkie Pie frowned and set it aside as she watched Berry down her own glass of cider. “Why would you want to get a foal drunk, though?
Berry laughed. “Oh Pinkie! It’s just an expression. I would never give alcohol to anypony underage” She suddenly thrust her mug under Pinkie Pie’s mouth and tipped it up. The cider sloshed out and down her throat.
Pinkie Pie coughed a sputtered. “H-hey! Don’t you know it’s mean to do something like...” Her eyes opened wide and she licked her lips. “Okay, I take that back. This tastes really good! Maybe I’ll just take another sip. After that, I should really just stick to the fruit punch.” She grabbed the mug she had set aside and took a big gulp. Setting it down, she sighed, content. “Okay, maybe two.”
“That’s the spirit!” Berry finished the rest of her drink and then grabbed Pinkie around the shoulders. Together, they strolled back over to the casks. “Dance after this? The DJ seems to be doing a good job.”
Pinkie merely nodded as she took both mugs and filled them to nearly overflowing. They crashed their glasses together and took a large gulp.
“Is the room supposed to go in and out of focus? You know... like a camera?” Pinkie held up her hooves, making a little box and buzzing through her mouth. “Bzzzt... bzzt... hehehe.”
Berry smiled and gently took the mug from Pinkie. “Not even two full drinks and you’re already buzzed. I would have thought a party pony like you would have been to hold more than that.”
Giggling, Pinkie tried to take back her drink, but came up just short. She waited a second for Berry to down the mugs before saying, “I told you. I don’t drink.” She looked around, her gaze falling on the DJ’s turntable. “Hey! You said we’re gonna dance. Lets go!” Pinkie grabbed Berry’s hoof and pulled her into the throng of wildly dancing ponies.
Berry swung her tail and bounced to the beat while Pinkie jumped up onto her hind legs and spun around, giggling and hiccuping. The ponies around them moved out of the way to avoid being smacked by Pinkie’s flailing hooves.
The song ended and Pinkie fell back onto all four legs, laughing wildly. “Ahahaha! I love it! I feel like I can dance like a pro now!” She looked around. “But why’d the music stop?”
“The DJ is changing disks,” Berry replied. She backed up and picked out a random glass full of cider and downed it. Everything grew blurry for a second, but cleared right up. The music started and she slammed down the mug, joining Pinkie as she began her crazy dancing again.
The ponies formed a circle around them, cheering Pinkie on. She flipped onto her forehooves and walked around before rolling backwards. She bounced up, a wide smile on her face.
“Go, go, go!”
“Hey, do that worm floppy thingy!”
“I knew you could dance, but this is crazy!
Berry sat back, filled up on cider and sipped at it calmly. “Looks like I’m gonna win this bet, Pinkie. You shouldn’t have challenged me to a party off.” Two drinks later, her mind kept telling her to join Pinkie. “But I’m not that drunk yet. I’ve only had... six? Seven drinks?”
“Excushe me. Berry?”
Berry turned around and nearly knocked a drink right out of Twilight’s magical grasp. She stumbled back and knocked into a group of ponies that were just milling around and talking. They ignored the tipsy mare, but moved over a yard or so. “Oh! Hey Twi’ enjoying the party?”
Twilight shrugged. “The Princessh says I should get out more often and jusht have some fun, and Applejack says thish cider is good. Thought I’d give it a try.” She hiccuped and fell flat on her flank. She giggled as she said, “Anywaysh, there’s a delivery pony outshide that needs you to sign a paper or shomething.”
Berry nodded and patted Twilight on the back. “Thanks. Go get some punch and food.” She shook her head as Twilight stumbled off towards the snack table, smacking into several ponies that were milling around. “Guess I didn’t go lite enough for some ponies.”
Sighing, Berry set aside her mug and got up. She skirted around the edge of the dance floor, shielding her eyes against the flashing lights from by the DJ. As soon as she was clear, she turned and stepped down the stairs. Just off to the side in the lawn, the delivery pony waved to her.
“Miss Berry Punch?” He paused for a second while Berry trotted over. “I managed to get a replacement barrel of cider for you. Sorry it took so long, but my manager needed to print out a new order form for you.” He reached into the back of the cart and pulled out a paper. “I just need you to sign here.”
She took the offered pen and scribbled her name. Frowning, she looked at it. “Huh... guess I’m getting a little more drunk than I thought. That just looks like a line.”
The delivery pony rolled his eyes and placed the paper back in the cart. “That’s cause it was. But it’ll do.” He carefully pulled the cask and set it at Berry’s hooves before hooking himself up to the small cart and pulling away.
Berry bent over and strained to pick up the cask. She got it a few centimeters off the ground before her strength faltered and it fell back down. Growling, she tried again with the same result.
“Needsh help?”
Sighing, Berry turned to face Pinkie Pie. “It’d be much...” She stopped and looked curiously at Pinkie. “Um... how many drinks have you had? Your eyes are a bit crossed.”
Pinkie Pie held up a half full mug. “I noticshed you walk out. I decshided to join you, but filled up on cider first. I ran out and had to refill before I could get to you. Sho, one and a half more.”
Berry shook her head and facehoofed. “I guess I overestimated the ponies ability to stomach alcohol. That was supposed to be so weak that one could only achieve a mild buzz. You’d think that living here would help... but no. Sorry I got you drunk, Pinkie. I didn’t know you were such a light-weight.
Pinkie laughed and said, “Psh... I’m having fun. That’s what mattersh, right?” Her gaze drifted to the cask of hard Cider at Berry’s hooves. “Say, before we head back in, shouldn’t we taste test that cshider?”
Shrugging, Berry tipped the barrel up and then reared up, coming to rest her forelegs on the top. She raised a hoof and brought it crashing down, smacking the spigot out. She placed the tap in and let the cider run into Pinkie’s outstretched mug. The foam spilled over the top and Berry stopped the flow.
Pinkie tried to stand up on her hind legs and down the drink, but tipped forward, splashing cider all over Berry. Immediately, Pinkie pushed her face onto Berry’s chest and licked the foam off.
Berry’s eyes widened, and she just stood there, shocked. Finally, she found her voice and cried, “Pinkie! What are you doing?”
“Doesh it matter? I shpilled cider all over you and know I have to clean it up,” Pinkie giggled, moving lower to Berry’s stomach. “It’ll only take a shecond. I swear!”
Berry sucked her gut in and had to resist laughing outloud as Pinkie’s tongue tickled her. “S-stop! W-we really shouldn’t.” When Pinkie didn’t stop, but moved even lower instead, Berry sighed. “I need to be more drunk for this. At least high buzzed.”
Pinkie Pie looked up eagerly and said, “Well, we do have an entire cashk of hard cider.” She darted over to it and quickly filled her mug. She shoved it into Berry’s hooves. “To needing to be drunk to be cleaned!”
Taking the mug, Berry downed the drink, to which Pinkie responded by refilling it and thrusting it back into her hooves. Berry drank that one quickly as well. Everything grew blurry and this time, it didn’t fade right away. This time, if she listened closely, she could swear she could hear something buzzing in her head.
Several drinks later, she tried walking but tripped over the cask. “Mkay. I think this is buzzed enough to continue with the... um... cleaning, if thatsh what you wants to call it. But firsht, lets move to behind some bushesh or something. Don’t want anypony to accidentally find us.” Berry led Pinkie over to the bushes that lined the edge of the park and pulled her behind them.
Pinkie smiled and knelt down. “Nows, where was I. Oh yes. I do believe I needed to clean the cider off your marehood before it got shticky, if you don’t mind,” Pinkie hiccuped.
Giggling, Berry fell back, spreading her hind legs. “No problem. I normally keep it clean. I promishe.”

Warm fluids washed over her tongue and she drew it out. The liquid dribbled out slowly at first, but as she continued to rub, Pinkie shuddered and moaned loudly.
The fluids finally sprayed into the air, barely missing Berry. It rained down, covering both mares who laughed wildly, opening their mouths to catch some. Seconds later, it stopped raining and Pinkie groaned.
“I-ish that it? I thought there would be more,” she said with a yawn. “And am I shupposed to be this tired?”
Berry collapsed next to Pinkie and rolled over to hug and kiss her. “I don’t know. I’ve only done it one other time with a shtallion.” She too yawned and closed her eyes. “Though, I’d guess so, cause I’m tired too.”
She lay there, waiting for Pinkie’s response. However, a few seconds later, she realized she wouldn’t be getting one. Moving her head closer to the sleeping mare, Berry could hear Pinkie snoring gently.
“Heh, light weight and not a night owl. Completely opposite of what I thought you were, Pinkie.” Berry smiled and hugged Pinkie tightly. “Maybe I’ll just fall asleep here with you. Though, I’m not sure that’sh the best idea to sleep behind bushes this close to a party.” She shrugged and sighed. “But whatever. We can deal with it in the morning.”
Slowly, she could feel herself drifting off to sleep. The combined noise of crickets, Pinkies snoring, and the party in the distance helped a bit. The warm, moist air ruffled her mane and she smiled. “See you in the morning, Pinkie. Whether it be for better or worse.”
