Chapters Author's Note
You guys! I can't believe all of your wonderful comments! Thank you all for giving this story so much love! It really makes everything worthwhile for me! And DGJabberwocky, as for Mommylestia, we'll have to see where it goes, but I could definitely see it happen sometime in the future, so it's definitely a great thought. Keep it coming!
This chapter was so easy to write. Thank God. I really needed an easy day.
As always, thank you Josh for all of your insight. The blanket design idea was all him, and I give him full credit for that one. Since thank you isn't enough, I decided to say it in two languages. Maybe that will help make it better. So, Mulțumesc! (That's Romanian!)
And of course, Thank you more times than I could ever say in a lifetime to you, Raevyn. Being your Mommy is the greatest gift of all. I love you with all my heart, baby girl!
Enjoy this chapter, everypony!
The Gift
The first few days after his friends found out about his new life were some of the best Spike had had in years. His secret was officially off of his shoulders, and there was cashmere comfort in that. They came to visit often and played with him in the nursery when Twilight was busy. Pinkie and Fluttershy in particular had a fondness for playing with him while he was in his headspace, and grew closer to him extremely quickly. While the others weren’t quite as involved, they quickly grew to love him just as much.
Today, however, was a special day. They had each gotten him gifts, and were planning on giving it to him today.
They all converged at the Golden Oak Library, with Twilight none the wiser as to what they intended to do. That day, Applejack knocked on the door, each carrying something in their hooves. When Twilight answered, she was delighted to see them.
“Girls! I’m so excited to see you! Please, come on in!” They did so as Twilight shut the door.
“Howdy, Twilight! We were wondering if Spike was here?”
“He’s in the nursery. Are those all for him?” They nodded. Twilight chuckled. “You girls are gonna spoil him rotten!” She said.
“And it is well deserved!” Said Rarity. Twilight smiled.
“I suppose.” She led them all into the nursery where Spike was playing in his crib with some stuffed animals. “Spike! Your aunties are here to see you!”
Spike immediately looked up from his playtime, and his eyes lit up at seeing them. He waddled forward to them, the diaper between his legs making it difficult to run. He hugged them each. “Hi Auntie Pinkie Pie, Hi Auntie Fluttershy, Hi Auntie Applejack, Hi Auntie Rainbow Dash, Hi Auntie Rarity!” He greeted happily.
“Hi Spike!” They chorused.
“Guess what?” Pinkie Pie sang.
“What?” Spike asked, slightly confused.
“We have presents for a very special dragon!” She said.
“For me?”
“Uh huh!” They all said together.
Rarity magically levitated her present over to him. “Open mine first. I think you’ll quite like what I have in store for you.”
Spike nodded, excited, and hastily unwrapped the box. Inside were several onesies of different patterns and designs, cloth diapers with the cutie marks of Twilight and her friends on them, and best of all a hand made quilt. It was pale blue with a purple and green border. In the middle of it was the egg Spike was hatched from, within a heart at the top. At the bottom left and right of the heart was Twilight’s cutie mark, and the rest was a continuing pattern of the rest of the cutie marks of all of their friends.
Spike wrapped his arms around Rarity. “I love it all! Thank you!” He said.
“You’re most welcome, darling.”
“Guess that means it’s my turn!” Said Rainbow Dash. Spike nodded and unwrapped her gift. Inside were children’s versions of the Daring Do books, along with the legends of Rockhoof and Flash Magnus. Finally, there was a copy of Burnferno, Warrior From Within, Spike’s favorite Dragon book.
“Awesome! Thank you, Auntie Rainbow Dash!”
“Anytime, kid. Anytime.”
“Well, looks like I’m next!” Said Applejack. Spike unwrapped her gift to see a set of brand new blocks, with designs of Twilight and her friends cutie marks on them, along with Celestia’s, Luna’s, and Cadence’s, all carved from wood from the trees of Sweet Apple Acres.
“These are amazing! Thanks, Auntie Applejack!” He hugged her.
“You’re welcome, little one!” She said.
“Oh, Oh! Open mine next!” Said Pinkie.
He opened it to see several plush toys, like a cupcake, a cookie, and a pie. There was also a gem covered rattle, and a little plastic plate, fork and knife, all with smiley faces on them.
“I love them! Thanks, Auntie Pinkie Pie!”
“Yay! I’m so happy!” Said Pinkie, hugging him.
“Here’s mine. I hope you like it.” Said Fluttershy.
Spike unboxed it, and what he saw brought happy tears to his eyes.
Inside was a hand sewn plushie of himself, complete with a diaper, and one of Twilight, with a happy smile and big button eyes.
“That way no matter where you go, you and your Mommy will always be together.” She explained. “And you never forget who you are.”
Spike launched himself into her, crying happily at such a thoughtful gift. “I-It’s perfect! Thank you so much, Auntie Fluttershy! Thank you. All of you. For everything.” He said. They all gathered around him in one giant group hug. When it broke up and Spike had calmed down, they all stood there talking for a minute, but Spike noticed that Twilight seemed to look a bit put out. He went over to her.
“Mama? What’s wrong?” He asked. Twilight plastered a smile on her face.
“Nothing, Spike. Don’t worry about it, sweetie.”
Spike gave her a look that told her he wasn’t going anywhere until he got some answers. She almost wanted to laugh at how he could look so imperious while still looking so adorable at the same time.
“Alright, alright.” She said. “I am so happy for all of the things you got today. I just wish that I could have given you something too, you know?” She looked dejected. Spike wrapped his arms around her neck, giggling. “What’s so funny?” Twilight asked, more than a little confused. Spike giggled agin.
“Silly Mama! You already gave me the best gift ever!”
“I did?” Twilight asked.
Spike nodded. “Yeah! You did!”
“And what might that be?”
“Mama, for someone so smart you really can’t see the obvious sometimes. The best gift I ever got was you becoming my Mommy. No gift could ever top that.” Spike said, sincerely. Twilight felt her eyes well up with happy tears as she hugged her baby tight.
“Really?”
“Really.” He said, nodding decidedly.
A single tear ran down her cheek and she squeezed him tighter. “I love you so much, Sweetheart.”
“I love you too, Mommy.”

Mommy
Twilight Sparkle sighed as she put down a book. It was late in the night, and she had just read The Unabridged History Of Magical Amulets cover to cover.
“Spike, could you get me our copy of Practical Potions And Modern Magic , please?” She asked as she shelved the book. After a few seconds, there was no reply. “Spike? Did you hear me? Spi-“ She turned around, only to see her number one assistant laying asleep on the ground. Twilight smiled. “Oh, Spike.” She said softly, smiling as she shook her head. She used her magic to gently lift him off of the ground, turned out the lights downstairs, and took him upstairs to their room, where she laid him gently into his basket and covered him with his old green blanket.
“Goodnight, Spike.” She said, before climbing into bed herself. Just as she shut her eyes, she heard a small sigh.
“Goodnight, Mommy.” He cooed.
Twilight froze in shock. She couldn’t believe her ears. She almost wanted to use that spell to travel back into the past, just so she could make sure that what she heard was real. But she knew from the sudden fluttering in her chest that it had to be. Slowly, a wide smile graced her face. But it wasn’t without some confusion. Had Spike even realized what he had just said? A tiny part of her hoped he had. But there was a part of her, the overanalyzing, rational side of her, that said he had just been half asleep and dreaming.
The question that was now posed in front of her was one that couldn’t be unthought of. It simply couldn’t be ignored. Did she really see herself as Spike’s mother? Certainly they were good friends, but there had always been something more than that between them. After all, it had been her who had hatched his egg. Sure, Princess Celestia had taken care of him for those first few weeks of life, but after that he had come to live with her. It had been she who fed him bottles of milk, bathed him, and, after some practice, changed his diapers. She had played with him, watched him grow, and celebrated his milestones like any parent would their foal. The more she thought about it, the more she realized that those were some of the best days of her life, and she felt a pinch of sadness in her chest that they had been over so quickly. Then it dawned on her that maybe they didn’t have to be.
An idea formed in her head, so quickly it made her dizzy. In that instant, she realized she loved Spike as if he were her own. No one could ever take his place in her heart. He was her baby dragon. She was vibrating with excitement like Pinkie Pie at a party. Tomorrow morning, she would put this plan into motion, but for now she decided that sleep would be nice. However, before she drifted off to sleep, she got up from bed and went over to where Spike lay.
“Mommy loves you, Spike.” She whispered, before planting a kiss on his forehead.
Then, Satisfied, she went to sleep.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Twilight woke in time with the sunrise. Yawning sleepily, she made sure to hurry and get in motion. She turned off Spike’s alarm clock and showered before she made her way into town. Since she had never been there before, it took her a while to find what she was looking for. She felt lucky that she had made it just in time for the opening. She quickly bought her items and put them in her saddlebag, thanking the owner before she went back to her home. When she got there, she double checked to make sure that Spike was still asleep. When it was clear that he was, Twilight put the items she had procured into a small closet. She felt a weight lift off of her chest. It was done. Her plan had been flawlessly executed. The only question left for her was if Spike would accept her plan. Only time would tell that. Sighing, she went into the kitchen and made breakfast for herself and her number one assistant.
When Spike awoke that morning, it was to the smell of pancakes. He opened his eyes and looked around blearily. His eyes fell upon his clock, and he realized with alarm that he had overslept! Panicked, he rushed down to the kitchen.
“I’m so so sorry I’m late, Twilight! Please don’t be mad at me! My alarm didn’t go off this morning and-“
“Oh, that was me, Spike.” She cut in.
“You- what?” He asked, dumbstruck.
“I turned off your alarm this morning.” She explained. “I decided that today we’re taking the day off today.”
“B-But we have stuff to do today!” He said, now extremely worried. Twilight never went off her schedule.
“It can wait.” She said, “I promise. Now come and enjoy your breakfast.”
“You- you made breakfast?” He asked, puzzled.
“Yes.” She said, sitting down to eat.
Spike walked over in a daze, shocked. However, his shock turned to delight when he was met with gem pancakes. After a few bites of pure bliss, his worry returned.
“Twilight, is something wrong?”
“No, but I did want to talk to you about something.” She said, and Spike immediately flashed to a list of things that he could have done wrong. He felt himself beginning to sweat.
“About what?” He asked nervously.
Twilight paused, unsure of where to start. “When you were a hatchling, did you know you used to call me “Mommy”?”
“I- did?” Spike blinked.
“Yes. I was just a filly back then, but I remember it. Everypony thought it was wrong. They thought it wasn’t right for me to be taking care of you because I was so young. But taking you in was the best thing I ever did. It changed my life.” She said, a nostalgic look in her eye.
“Uh, Twilight, why are you telling me this?”
“Last night when I put you in bed, you called me Mommy again. And I realized that I never wanted it to stop.” She said.
Spike’s cheeks burned red with embarrassment. “I’m sorry, I-“
Twilight put a hoof over his mouth. “It’s okay, Spike. It made me happy. You can call me that anytime you want.” She said.
“You- you really don’t mind?” She shook her head no.
“Not at all, Spike. Not at all.”
Spike put his fork down with a clatter and went over to Twilight to give her a hug.
“I love you, Mommy.” He said into her coat.
“I love you too… son.”

Plans Revealed
When the hug broke, both Twilight and Spike were blushing, but there was nothing about it that was awkward. The both of them went back to breakfast, talking about unimportant, trivial things. When they were done, Twilight did the dishes and told Spike to go relax. Though a bit unnerved, Spike was in no position to argue. When the dishes were done, Twilight stopped a moment, taking in a deep breath. It was time for her to reveal her plan to Spike. She hoped that he would take it well. She knew in her heart that it was the right moment, and knew that once she proposed the idea, there would be no going back. Putting on a brave face, she went to find spike and saw him in the library, reading a comic book. When he saw her coming toward her, he smiled.
“Hey Twi- uh, Mommy. Sorry. It’s going to take me a while to get used to that.” He said.
Twilight smiled. “It’s no problem, Spike. Take all the time you need. I was wondering if I could show you something really quick.”
“Sure.” He said, and followed her.
Twilight felt her heartbeat quicken with every step she took, but she would not be deterred from her task. She reached the closet sooner than she had hoped. She opened the closet to reveal two brown bags. “I bought these for you… for us.” She said, slowly. Every nerve in her body was standing at attention, and she was panicking, but she did not let it show on her face. Spike moved in to grab the bags, and Twilight held her breath. When Spike looked inside, he didn’t look surprised. He looked confused like he had earlier.
“This is for us?” He asked. Twilight swallowed, then nodded.
“Yes. I thought… I thought that if you wanted me as a mommy that we could, you know, start from the beginning…?” She said, but it came out as a question. In her head it sounded logical, but now that she spoke the words aloud, she wasn’t so sure.
Spike stared at the items in the bag for a long time. There were two packs of plastic diapers, a bottle, a pacifier, and a onesie. For a long time, he was quiet, and Twilight felt growing fear come up inside of her. She wanted to talk to him, but she was too afraid to break the silence. Finally, Spike looked up at her.
“Are you sure this is what you want?” Asked Spike. Twilight nodded numbly. He was quiet for a moment, just long enough to take a breath. Then he spoke. “Okay.”
Twilight’s head snapped up. “What?”
“I said okay.” He repeated.
“Are you- Are you sure?” She asked, as relief flooded through her.
Spike nodded, and Twilight swept him up into a bone crushing hug.
“Too… Tight…” He gasped. Twilight pulled away sheepishly.
"So… Where do we start?”
Twilight smiled at him. "I'm glad you asked." She crossed the room to where an old shoe box sat on the table. She picked it up and went over to her son. "It starts with this." She said, handing it to him. He looked down at it confusedly. "Open it." She urged.
He was confused, but he listened to what she said. She pulled off the top of the box and pulled out a ratty piece of fabric, covered with holes and had a dingy coloring to it. He looked at his mother curiously.
"You don't recognize it?" She asked.
"Should I?”
"That was your first blanket from when you were a hatchling." She said.
Some hazy memory was trying to break through to him. In a move that seemed automatic, he pulled the blanket up to his nose and sniffed it. It brought back a dozen little moments, moments he shouldn't have been able to remember because he had been so young. He thought he could remember things like Twilight holding his claw and singing to him and holding him close. Before he realized what he was doing, he found his claw in his mouth.
He only snapped back to reality when he felt his Mommy's lips pressing against his forehead. When he realized what he'd been doing, he pulled it out, embarrassed, but Twilight used her hoof and guided it back in. Then, she took him to their bedroom. They sat down next to one another, and Twilight felt her son's head rest on her shoulder. She gently kissed his head, relishing in the moment. Then, she heard herself beginning to sing his favorite lullaby from when he was little. It calmed Spike down far more than it probably should have. Twilight sang to him quietly, a little adjustment made in a few words:
“We’ve come such a long, long way
And I’ve loved you from the very first day
I loved watching you grow and seeing what you do
Despite all you’ve been through
And in all these ways you’ve made me proud of you
You’re my gift sent from above
You Taught me all about a mothers love
You are what I waited for
Doesn’t matter what happened before
It doesn’t matter what all I’ve been through
because every heart break led me straight to you
And maybe someday you’ll help me sing along
to the end of your own song.”
Spike sighed, and cuddled into her. “I love you, Mommy.”
“I love you too, Spike. I always have and I always will.” She promised. For a short while, neither of them said anything. Then, Twilight spoke.
"Spike, how about we have story time together, hmm?" She asked. He nodded. That sounded like a good idea. It reminded him of when Twilight read to him as a hatchling. He got up and followed his mother to the bookshelf to pick out a book and then he sat in her lap. She handed him a bottle she had magically filled with warm milk, and began to read, gently rocking him back and forth in her hooves.
"Once upon a time, there was a pony named Rockhoof…”
By the end of the story, Spike had fallen into a light sleep.

Wow guys! I'm so glad to have so many great reviews and likes! You guys are so awesome! You have absolutely made my day! I am so flattered!
I wanted to take a second to take the opportunity to promote a charity project I have been hard at work on. As many of you know, I am an ABDL Mommy just as Twilight is in this story. So I wanted to create a charity to help out ABDL's and those with incontinence worldwide. So I wanted to do that by making care packages for ABDL's and giving diapering supplies to those with incontinence. Here is a link to the gofundme page detailing the campaign:

Surprises
Twilight stayed in the room with her son the entire time he was sleeping. She sat beside him as he dreamed, just as she had once done when he was a very little dragon. The whooshing sound of his breath coming in and out calmed her, just as his scent had once done, but since he smelled different now, it didn't have the same effect. She watched his face- peaceful and happy, as it should always been. Every tiny move he made fascinated her, as it once had when he was a hatchling. The idea that she had hatched a dragon all on her own used to amaze her. Now, she wondered where all that wonder had gone. How had it been lost to her all these years? How had she stopped recognizing what she'd had? Well, she wasn't going to take that for granted anymore. She was going to appreciate her baby while she had him. To seal the promise she made to herself, she pressed a kiss to his forehead, careful not to wake him.
Using her magic, she levitated him toward a special door to a secret part of the library that she had created herself. She opened the door to reveal a nursery, made especially for Spike. She lowered him gently into a crib, gently floated a pacifier into his mouth, and his blanket into his claw, then sat in the rocking chair to keep watch over her son.
When Spike did awake, it was an hour later. He opened bleary eyes to a seemingly new world. He could feel that he was covered in warm blankets, and felt something rubbery in his mouth and something soft in one of his hands. He blinked, not really seeing anything until his vision came back into focus. There were white bars around him, and something in one of the corners of the room was moving, but he couldn't see what it was. Instinct taking over, he shot up from his position under the covers. Before he could become panicked and whip himself up into a frenzy, his mother came into his line of sight. Then, he remembered what was going on and visibly relaxed.
Twilight slid down the side of what appeared to be a large crib. As she reached for him, he wondered how he hadn't noticed that before he went to sleep. Had he really been that tired? She helped him onto his feet and he looked around. He had never been in this room before. The white crib was in one corner, and a rocking chair in the opposite one. A tiny bookshelf was next to that, filled with books already, but he hadn’t really expected anything less. Adjacent to that was a table of sorts, with supplies he couldn't quite see. Then, there was a closet on the back wall, and finally, a dresser next to the crib. Whatever he'd been mindlessly sucking on before, he spat it out.
"What is this place?" He asked, confused and awed at the same time.
Twilight stepped forward. "It's a nursery. I made it for you.”
Spike looked at her confused. "For me?" He parroted. She nodded in confirmation.
"For you. And me. If today goes well and you'd like to do it again, I thought it would be nice to have a place for us to call our own here." She said, uncharacteristically shy.
Spike was left utterly speechless at the statement. He didn't know what to say. It wasn't that he didn't like it- that wasn't it at all. He just… didn't know how to accept it. Twilight seemed to sense this and put a hoof on her son's shoulder.
"Spike, I know that this is a lot to take in. I don't expect you to say anything right away. I can only hope that this can be a fresh start for the two of us.”
Spike struggled with what to say to that. But he found himself feeling something else… Something a lot like love, but mixed with something else. Something he just couldn't name. He tried to find the right words, but none would come. Finally, after a seemingly endless wait, he spoke.
"It feels like it is." He said, quietly. Twilight dared a sideways glance at him and saw her son smiling. It released some of the tension inside of her.
"Do you want to see the rest of the room?" She asked. He nodded, now curious about what else there was to see. She showed him what was inside of the table, and was surprised to find a selection of pacifiers, bottles, and a few other items. He was about to ask what was on the other side of the drawers when he realized what the table was actually supposed to be used for. It was a changing table. She moved on. And then, he noticed for the first time that there was a mobile over the crib. How he hadn't seen that when he had been inside, he would never know. The mobile had stars and moons, and a centerpiece made up of dozens of shining streaks of all colors. They looked like a rainbow from below, he realized. It was beautiful.
Suddenly overwhelmed by his own emotions, he reached out and pulled his mother into an embrace. Twilight, who was still talking and explaining something to him, stopped abruptly and let out a small squeak of surprise as she was being squeezed against her son's chest. Then, she wrapped her hooves around him in a tight and beautiful embrace. Holding him close, she treasured this moment more than anything else she had ever known. This moment was nothing less than her touch of heaven, and the start of their forever. Just when she was about to let go, she heard him say, in the faintest whisper,
"I love it, Mommy. Thank you.”
The quiet admission made her heart leap.
"I love you, Spike. Very much." She said, voice thick with emotion.
"I love you too.”

Discovered
Those first few days and weeks of age play were ones of trial and error, of trying new things and enjoying old ones. But the two of them developed a routine that cemented with time. Twilight would wake Spike up every morning, check his diaper, and feed him a bottle. She would stay with him unless something came up with her friends or the princess. Then she would head off to do her duty while he did his chores. When she got back, they would play together until lunch time, where he was fed once more. After lunch his mother would read him a story and then settle him down for a nap. He would sleep until three in the afternoon. When he woke up he was changed again, and was allowed to play or read. After that the two of them had dinner together in the nursery. The rest of the evening was spent playing with his Mommy until bedtime loomed. He was sung a lullaby and put to sleep. Then he would wake up and start the cycle all over again. Of course things weren't that way all the time. There were times when he went to visit his friends out in town or help send letters to the princess, or of course when he was doing his chores, but otherwise that was his life, and he loved it. He kept his lifestyle a secret from his friends. He couldn't bear the thought of them looking at him like he was different. So his secret festered inside of him. Although he had drawn a very clear line between his two lives, the line was growing thinner every day. His infantile habits were beginning to spill over in his adult life. The two hardest things to remember were to not to use baby talk when talking about his mother, and to not suck his claw.
At first, Spike really struggled with getting into the right headspace while he was in the nursery. It wasn't that he didn't want to- he really really did- but he couldn't figure out how to be less prideful. Being a dragon with ties to Princess Celestia meant that he had higher expectations than most ponies, who could spend the day willy-nilly, doing whatever they chose. But between being an intermediary for Twilight and the Princess and his own daily chores, he was held to a higher standard, and that made finding ways to let loose completely and just relax difficult to achieve. But with Twilight's guidance and gentle, nurturing nature, he began finding his way.
To be fair, once he was able to access that part of himself, it became much easier, and their bonding together happened more and more often. It also became easier for him to try new things while in that headspace, specifically the concept of wearing and even using diapers. But he quickly got used to it. Suddenly, he was able to be more vocal with his emotions and express them age appropriately, and his mother never scolded him or made him feel invalidated.
That day had begun like any other. Twilight got up and went into the nursery where she changed Spike, and gave him his bottle. She didn’t have any plans for the day, so she decided to give Spike one day off from his chores, just so he could have a full day of play. She spent the morning reading to him, coloring with him, and chasing him around the castle. She gave him gems for lunch along with a bottle, and ate a daffodil sandwich for herself. She then took him back to the nursery, and started reading him the story of Gusty The Great. When he had finally fallen asleep, She tucked him into his crib and gave him a kiss. Then, satisfied that he was safe, she went into the library to read a book. About an hour and a half passed with just the sound of turning pages, occasional squeaks of excitement, and the sound of quills scratching against scrolls when she took the occasional note. Just as she finished up another note, there was a knock at the door. Twilight set down her quill and opened the door to see Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy.
“Howdy, Twilight!” Applejack greeted.
“Girls! What are you doing here?” Twilight asked happily.
“We wanted to come and visit, darling. It’s been such a long time since we’ve all been free at the same time, and we wanted to see if you wanted to do something together.” Rarity said.
“Sure!” She replied.
“We could go to Sugarcube Corner and eat some sweets!” Pinkie suggested.
“Or I could take Everypony on a cloud ride!” Said Rainbow.
“Or we could all go over to my cottage and spend some time with the animals.” Fluttershy spoke, a bit too quietly.
Twilight’s mind flashed to Spike, who was still napping and would no doubt be in his headspace when he woke up. She couldn’t bear to leave him, but she also really wanted to spend time with her friends. So, she decided to compromise.
“How about you all come inside and spend some time here for a while. I promised myself that I was going to stay home today, just to relax. I can’t think of a better way to do it than with my friends!” Said Twilight.
“Sounds good, right girls?” Asked Applejack. They all nodded their assent.
“Great! Come on in!” She said.
They all gathered in the library, and started talking. Twilight kept an ear out for Spike, but she was sure he wouldn’t be up for a while. As the conversation went on, she got further immersed into it. So immersed, that she almost didn’t hear Spike calling her during a slight lull in the talking.
“Mommy? Mommy?” He called.
Twilight stiffened as she realized he was calling. She was quick to go into the nursery to get him.
She hadn’t realized that her friends had heard too, and followed to investigate. In her hurry, Twilight hadn’t closed the door all the way, so the magical lock she had placed on it days earlier wasn’t activated. They all opened the door and looked inside.
There was Twilight, inside a nursery, holding Spike to her, as he cooed happily, “Mommy”.

And of course, this is for you, Raevyn. I hope Twilight's protective and nurturing nature remind you of me. It's who I want to be for your sake. I hope you like it, sweetheart.
And to you dear readers, thanks for sticking with it this far! You guys are the world to me! I hope you all enjoy this chapter! -hugs-
Thoughts
Twilight hushed Spike as he laid in her arms. She knew that he didn’t like waking up alone. Despite all her reassurances, Spike still felt that he was replaceable, and as such had some abandonment issues. And whenever he was in his headspace, they were magnified tenfold. She rocked him gently, so incredibly focused on him that she didn’t notice her friends in the doorway.
They all stood in the nursery, staring at the bizarre sight. For a while they couldn't even move. They were just looking at them, bug eyed. The next emotion that hit was intrigue. What exactly were they seeing? And how had it come to be? Curiosity swirled inside them, unable to be restrained. Without realizing it, they stepped forward.
The slight movement caught Twilight’s eye, and she looked up, expecting to see Owlowiscious flying through the room, perhaps startled from sleep by her friends. Instead, she saw her friends standing there. It took her anxiety-addled mind a minute to process what she was seeing, but when she realized what was happening she was incredibly afraid for Spike. Her protective maternal instincts kicked into high gear and she clutched her child closer to her. Her son was too vulnerable right now to be seen by anyone, let alone his closest friends. When Spike shut his eyes, Twilight gestured for them to move, and they reluctantly did so, not wanting to upset their friends.
As they made their way back into the library, each pony was silent, the mystery of it all tantalized them, teased them with it's elusiveness. What in the world was going on? Trying to figure it out only gave them each a headache. Scenes from the days past played on a loop over and over again in their minds. Twilight had become more reclusive lately, and Spike had become more joyful and outgoing when he was seen. They had all seen the differences in both of them. They had noticed the pair not coming out as much, but had thought it was because of extra chores or duties from the Princess. Now they knew that wasn’t the case, and each of them had their own thoughts on the subject.
Rainbow Dash was more weirded out than anything. She had now idea how to process what she had just seen. Spike had been in a diaper, in a nursery. And Twilight had been acting so… motherly. It was just so strange. Even so, despite all the strangeness, Spike and Twilight were her friends, and she was in no position to judge. Loyalty to her friends was the most important thing to her, and there was no way she was just going to fly off without hearing the whole story.
Rarity was having similar thoughts, but not identical ones. The strangeness of everything that had hit her just the same as it had Rainbow, but her thoughts were more focused on Spike’s diaper. He didn’t… use that thing, did he? It was so uncouth! Despite all this, she couldn’t help but find the whole thing a little endearing. He looked so sweet curled up like that against Twilight.
Applejack was more open minded. She wasn’t too sure about what she was seeing, but she could tell Twilight was happy, and so was Spike, and that was enough for her. Sure, she wanted an explanation, but she was patient, and could wait for it when they were ready.
Pinkie, on the other hand, needed no explanation. She knew exactly what she was seeing. Spike and Twilight were members of the Adult Foal community. She should have seen it sooner. She had thrown quite a few parties in her day, and had stumbled upon the community by accident when delivering a cake to an Adult Foal party. Her intrigue had gotten the best of her, and she had begun asking questions. The ponies at the party were happy to answer them, because she had come here and never judged them for what they were doing. When her questions were answered, she had gone on about her day, but the idea had stuck somewhere in the back of her mind. She found herself wondering what it would be like to try it, to do nothing but play all day. It sounded like so much fun! So one day, when the Cakes were out at a baking competition, she bought a few Adult Foal items for herself. A pacifier, bottle, and diapers. Sliding that diaper under herself had been wonderful, a dim reminder of when she had accidentally worn one while foalsitting Pound and Pumpkin, and she had been happy with it’s pillowy embrace on her flank. Suckling on the pacifier was soothing to her, and drinking from a bottle, though not without some challenges, was also fun for her. She played with toys, and Gummy, and didn’t have a care in the world. It was one of the most fun things she had ever done on her own. From that day on, she had been a proud member of the community, and had learned to recognize just who was apart of it simply by the way they behaved. She felt bad for not seeing the signs in Spike, but cheered herself up with the idea that maybe now she could have a playmate! She pinkie promised to herself that his secret was safe with her.
That left Fluttershy, who was nearly bursting with joy. She had known from the minute Spike had entered Ponyville that he was a baby dragon, but she didn’t know it went this far! The idea made her want to squeal in delight. She didn’t need another reason to adore him and think he was one of the cutest things to ever grace Equestria, and now she had one. She was going to lavish him with love and affection and attention. It was going to be amazing.
Then, a noise cut through the silence in the room, and they all turned to see Twilight standing there before them.

Truth
Twilight and her friends stared at each other in a moment that seemed to stretch onto eternity. The room was perfectly silent. Twilight’s face gave nothing away. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. It was, inevitably, Rainbow Dash who broke the silence.
“Uh, Twilight… You have something you want to tell us?” She asked. There was an uncomfortable silence for a second, and then Twilight sighed.
“To be honest I really don’t want to talk about this right now. Not because I’m angry, but because this was something that Spike and I should have told you when it started. I just didn’t say anything because he asked me not to. I wanted to respect his privacy. But the secrets out now, so I’ve got nothing to lose.” She said, and began to explain. “When he was a hatchling, Spike used to call me Mommy all the time. And one night a few weeks ago he called me that again. And it made me realize that I never wanted it to stop. I had an idea that maybe if he called me that, he might want to be cared for more than he let on. So I went shopping, picked up some supplies, asked him, and he said okay. The nursery came later. A few reconstruction spells really do come in handy. I’ve felt bad not being around as much for you girls, but he needs me, and he comes first. I hope you understand and aren’t angry with me for keeping this from you. Can you forgive me?”
Applejack stepped forward right away. “Aw sugar cube, There’s nothin’ to forgive. You were protecting him. Believe me, I understand.” She said. Twilight smiled weakly.
“You do?”
“Of course we do, darling. We may not have expected to see what we did, but we don’t think less of either of you for your choices. You were doing what you thought was best.” Said Rarity, smiling.
“Yeah! And baby Spikey looked soooo cute! I just wanted to eat him up like a wittle cupcake!” Cheered Pinkie.
“He was adorable!” Fluttershy gushed, lifting off of the ground in excitement. “I could cuddle him forever! He was the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen!”
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Fluttershy and Pinkie are right. That was pretty cute. I’m not usually one for babies but in Spike’s case I think I could make an exception.” Said Rainbow Dash, blushing a little.
“Nothing to be ashamed of darling, Spikey-Wikey looked positively charming in his little get up! I don’t think I’ve seen anything that’s made me feel like that since Sweetie Belle was a foal!” Rarity commented.
“I agree. He looked almost as sweet as Applebloom on the day she was born!” Applejack agreed.
Twilight’s smile grew in earnest as she heard her friends gush over her son. It filled her with a pride for which she had yet to name. She went over to her friends and gave them all a hug. “Thanks everypony. That really means a lot to me.” She said, trying to keep the happy tears from her voice. When the hug broke, Twilight’s smile slowly faded as she realized what she would have to do. She would have to tell Spike that they knew. Celestia only knew what his reaction would be. She could feel herself panicking, but chose to ignore it. “I’d better tell him what you saw.” She said, solemnly. They all nodded in understanding and watched her walk away, hoping that everything would turn out okay.
Twilight went into the darkened nursery and went over to the crib. After she had hushed him from an earlier nightmare, he had easily fallen back asleep. She hated to wake him, but she knew she couldn’t put off the task at hand any longer. Very gently, she tapped him on the shoulder.
“Spike. Wake up, pumpkin.” She cooed, picking him up. He stirred in her hooves and opened his eyes, confused.
“Mama?” He asked.
Twilight sat down and cradled Spike against her chest. “It’s alright, Spike. It’s just me.” She said.
“Wanna sleep.” He whined.
“I know you do, and I promise you can later on if you want, but I need to tell you something. I need you to listen to me very carefully, okay?”
He was nodding when he heard something in his Mommy’s voice that made him tense up, and he looked up at her, large green eyes staring at her questioningly and innocently.
“While you were sleeping, the girls came by to visit. They were still here when you called for me, so I went to get you. I didn’t realize that I had left the door open a little, and I absolutely did not hear them follow me. Spike, they saw this place. And you.”
Spike’s breathing hitched as a dozen emotions flew by him at once. Fear, anger, upset, shame, and guilt were a few he could name. And yet there was a strange sense of relief bubbling beneath it all. But he couldn’t acknowledge it yet. After the cold, paralyzing fear came a rush of hot anger that lit up like a firecracker inside of him. Instantly, he was out of his headspace.
“How COULD you, Twilight?! This was supposed to be OUR day! Just for US! I cannot BELIEVE they saw! And all because you didn’t close the door?! What were you THINKING?!” He shouted, frustrated. Twilight, however, kept her cool. Whenever he threw a tantrum like this, it was best to keep a level head to calm him down.
“I wasn’t thinking, Spike. I was in such a rush to get to you that I forgot to close it all of the way. I didn’t do it on purpose. I’m sorry.”
Spike’s anger fizzled out as quickly as it had come, and humiliation swooped in to take it’s place.
“This is so embarrassing! I can never show my face out there again! And Rarity saw! I’m never going to have a chance with her now! They all probably think I’m a freak and are sitting there laughing at me! What am I going to do? What am I going to-“
Spike was silenced by Twilight’s hoof over his mouth.
“Spike, please calm down. I promise you, it’s okay. Nopony is laughing at you. Nopony thinks you’re a freak. Listen for a second, okay? I explained everything to them. they were a little confused about everything at first, but after I told them what happened, they understood. They accept you, Spike. Exactly as you are. They’re your friends. They love you, big or little. They want you to know that. They would never judge you or make fun of you for something that makes you so happy, baby boy. I promise, it’s all okay.” She soothed.
Spike stared at her, deep in thought. Her words had soothed him, but his fears persisted. His little self was beginning to creep in again, but his older headspace still wanted control.
“Ma- Twi- Ma…” He struggled with his headspace when Twilight hushed him.
“It’s alright, little one.”
Spike held onto her tightly. “Mama…”
“Shhhh. Mama’s right here. I’m not going anywhere.” After he calmed down, she spoke up again. “How about you come out and say hi to everyone, okay?”
“But Mama, I-“
“It’s all okay. I promise. I would never let anypony hurt you.” She said. Spike nodded and buried his face in Twilight’s neck. She patted his spine before taking him out into the library, where all the girls were waiting.
“Girls, meet my son.”

Play
Spike still had his head buried in Twilight’s neck when she said those words. It made him blush further. For about half a second, there was quiet in the room, and the tension in Spike shot up faster than Rainbow Dash when she performed a sonic rainboom. For just that fraction of a moment, his shame threatened to tear him apart. And then he heard it.
“Awww!” It was a collective statement from everypony. It made him peek out his head a little to look at the mares before him.
“D’awww! Wittle Spikey-Wikey, you’re so adorable! I just want to hug you and never let go!” Said Pinkie, giving him a gentle squeeze.
“Spike, you’re perfect. I knew you were a baby dragon when I met you, and this proved it! I’m so excited to get to know you!” Fluttershy babbled.
“I can’t believe it, I would have never expected this, but it makes me glad for you.” Applejack said.
“You look just perfect, Spikey-Pooh! Absolutely fabulous!” Rarity gushed.
“Spike, you’re awesome, and nothing changes that. Not even this. We’ll always be here for you.” Said Rainbow Dash.
He looked at them each one by one. “Really?” He asked, hope beginning to shine in his eyes. They all nodded. He smiled, a slow, bright smile, and hugged them all. They were happy to reciprocate.
When the hug broke, Twilight spoke up. “Why don’t we show you around?” She said. They all nodded and she took them into the nursery.
They all saw the white crib that was in one corner, and a rocking chair in the opposite one. A tiny bookshelf was next to that, filled with books, Adjacent to that was a changing table. Then, there was a closet on the back wall, and finally, a dresser next to the crib. The ceiling was painted a sky blue, with clouds and a sun, and on each wall was a different mural. One was of Ponyville, the next was of Canterlot, the one after was of a cave full of multicolored gems, and finally, the one he could see when he was in his crib, was a mural of Twilight holding him.
They hadn’t been a part of the original design of the nursery, but after spending more and more time there, Twilight had decided that she wanted to make it more personal. With a few simple spells, she had been able to transfigure her memories and turn them into art. When she had shown him the day it was finally done, he had been elated. He had hugged her so tightly that she hadn’t been able to breathe. When he pulled away, slightly embarrassed, she had laughed and laughed.
“It’s beautiful, darling. Simply breathtaking. The love that has gone into this is just heartwarming.” Said Rarity. Everypony else murmured in agreement.
There was a beat or two of quiet as everypony adjusted themselves to the new environment. Then, of course, Pinkie Pie popped up.
“Hey Spike, Wanna play?” She asked.
“Sure!” He said.
She pulled out a bag of lollipops and put one into her mouth. Spike had gone over to a paint set. That Caught Twilight’s attention. He loved to paint, but he tended to get it everywhere. Instantly his claw was in the blue paint and smearing it all over the paper. Twilight watched him vigilantly, knowing that he might get paint all over the house. When Pinkie saw Spike absently trying to put his paint-covered claw in his mouth, she ran over to him and gently pulled his arm down.
"Woah there munchkin, let's keep those fingers out of there for now. We don't want you getting lead poisoning now, do we?”
Spike gave her a miffed look.
"Alright, alright. You need something to suck on. I get it." Then, an idea struck her. She took the lollipop from her mouth and popped it into Spike’s. After a few seconds of sucking, Spike was smiling. Pinkie grinned.
"Pretty good, huh? Just don't tell your mommy I gave you sugar. She might be mad at me. Okay?” Pinkie stage whispered. Spike responded by smearing paint all over Pinkie's face. Pinkie burst out laughing. “Hey! I’m not an easel!” But there was no trace of anger in her voice, just mirth. Spike and everyone else were laughing out loud, despite Twilight rolling her eyes.
“Spike, you know you’re not supposed to have sugar this early in the morning!” She chastised. The dragon pouted.
“Please Mama?” He asked, eyes large and pleading.
Twilight took in a breath. “Alright. Just this once.”
Spike’s eyes lit up. “Thank you!” He said, giving her a hug. Then, he turned to Pinkie as he went back to the paint set. “Thanks Auntie Pinkie Pie!” He said.
Pinkie’s smile grew so wide that it looked like it might break her face. She hugged Spike, even though it got paint all over her. “Best. Day. Ever!” She cheered, while her friends looked on with a smile. Twilight was grinning like mad. She knew that her friends would be an invaluable part of this journey that she was taking, and that moment had proved it.
Meanwhile, Spike played. He was more content than he had ever been. Being treated like a hatchling had always been a secret fantasy of his. From the moment he knew how to walk, to write, he had been Twilight’s faithful assistant. He had never really had the chance to be a child. Responsibility had always continuously been heaped upon him. Of course he’d had his time to himself, but his overshadowing duties had always come first. There had been no time for play. In the time just after his moving to Ponyville, he had begun to think about what it would be like to be a hatchling again. To just be taken care of, and not take care of anything else. But the fantasy had been kept a well-buried secret. That fantasy had come true in the best and most unexpected of ways.
Now, with his Mommy and all of his aunties here, he finally had the childhood of his dreams.
Author's Note
Another chapter has happened! This chapter in particular wasn't planned, but it happened. So... Yeah. That. Not my proudest chapter, but at least it's a complete one. It does lead up to later plot though, so it's not a total waste.
Thanks to my nightmares for partially inspiring this chapter. Y'all suck, but there's no denying that some of them inspire the craziest chapters.
Enjoy the chapter!
Dreams
That night, Twilight dreamed.
It was a sunny, beautiful day. Birds were singing, ponies were busy doing their jobs. Twilight was out in Ponyville, carrying Spike upon her back. Everypony commented on how sweet they looked together. Twilight felt a deep rooted sense of pride blossom inside of her chest at such comments. She went shopping at the market, picking up supplies for her latest assignment from the Princess. Still, she couldn’t help but feel like something was off.
Just then, she heard trumpets beginning to sound, and saw Princess Celestia begin to ride in on a chariot. Shocked, because the Princess had sent no word of her coming to Ponyville, Twilight froze as the princess exited her chariot. She was quick to recover herself and bow.
“Princess Celestia!” She said.
“Twilight Sparkle. My most faithful student. It’s wonderful to see you again. And you too, Spike.” She said. Twilight hugged her mentor, and Spike waved at her.
“What are you doing here? I didn’t know you were coming to Ponyville.” She said.
“Actually, I came here to see you.” She explained.
“Me?”
Celestia laughed slightly. “Yes. Is there someplace private we can talk?”
“Of course, Princess. Please, follow me.” She said, leading the princess to her library. Celestia smiled as she looked around.
“It looks very much how I left it the last time I was here.” She said. Twilight nodded and went to the kitchen.
“Would you like some tea?” Twilight asked as Spike hopped off of her back.
“That would be lovely, thank you.” Celestia said. Twilight poured two cups of tea, one for her mentor and one for herself, before moving to sit down.
“So, you wanted to talk to me about something?” Asked Twilight. Celestia used her magic to pick up her tea cup and take a sip.
“Yes. About Spike, actually.”
“Spike?” She parroted.
Celestia nodded. “Do you know why I gave you Spike?” She asked.
“No.” She said, hesitantly.
Celestia smiled and put her tea cup down. “After you hatched him, I initially wanted to give him to a dragon family to raise. In the meantime, I took care of him. One day, I was feeding him out of his room, and he saw you pass by through a window. He reached out to you from where he was, and I saw that there was something between you two. It was almost like you were meant to be together.” She explained.
Twilight smiled. “Thank you, princess. But I don’t understand. Why are you telling me this?”
Celestia took a sip of tea. “The both of you were meant to be together from the start. Don’t be afraid to take it further.”
“Take it further? What do you mean?”
Celestia grinned. “I’m afraid that you’ll have to find that out for yourself.” She counseled.
Twilight puzzled over this for a moment or two, unsure of what her mentor meant. She was about to comment, when she heard Spike call out for her.
“Mama!”
Twilight raced to him, and saw that he was laying in his crib, stomach distended. Maternal concern rushed through her.
“Spike, what happened?” She asked.
He pointed to a large pile of gems on the floor. “You ate too many gems?” She asked. He shook his head. She inspected the gems closer, and saw that a lot of them were covered in what seemed to be mildew.
“Oh Spike…” She said. She ran to the kitchen, got a cool rag, and raced into him, and put it on his forehead. She teleported a bucket in beside his crib and kept the side down in case he had to get sick. However, she sensed that something even worse was adrift.
Suddenly she was running faster than she thought she ever could, rushing to the ER on at Ponyville Hospital.
"Please," the words seemed to come from somebody else's lips, "someone help my son!” She didn’t even notice the word escape her.
An older Doctor in his late fifties responded to her cry. "What are his symptoms?”
"He has a high fever, he hasn't been sleeping, he can't keep anything down, and he's constipated.”
The Princess quickly arrived behind her.
The doctor put a hand on his abdomen, Causing Spike to let out an ear-splitting shriek.
"Nurse! Page Doctor Shiner in pediatrics and get me a bed for this child in OR 2 and prep him for surgery.”
"Surgery?!" Twilight repeated in disbelief as her baby was taken from her arms.
"Ma'am, I think your son is suffering from intussusception. It's where part of the intestine slides into an adjacent part of the intestine. It often blocks food or fluid from passing through. He'll need immediate surgery to take care of the problem. I need your consent before I or anyone else can provide any medical care for him. Do I have your consent?”
"Yes." She said numbly.
Just like that, her screaming dragon was whisked away. A nurse led her to a receptionist desk so that she could fill out the appropriate forums. The busywork kept her occupied for a short while, but when it was over and she was alone with her thoughts, she started to break. Her breathing became uneven and she covered her mouth to keep from sobbing. Finally, the full impact of what was happening hit her, and she stood up, unable to stay frozen any longer.
"I can't do this anymore." She whispered and ran to the nearest restroom.
Only when she was alone in the bathroom did she finally cry.
The princess found her in the bathroom and wrapped her wings around her student.
“He’ll be okay, Twilight.” She reassured.
“I don’t know what to do.” She said.
“I’ll take care of it.” Celestia promised.
For a long time, there was nothing. Then the doctor came in.
“Ms. Sparkle?”
“Yes?” She said, nervous.
“Spike is fine. He’s recovering right now.”
“Can I see him?”
The doctor nodded. Just before she was about to leave, Princess Celestia, whispered to her. “Remember what I said.”
Twilight nodded and went to see him.
He hugged her, and sighed. “I love you, Mommy.”
She felt her chest clinch. And then she realized what the Princess had meant.
Then, just before she could say anything, she woke up.
Author's Note
Yet another tough chapter, but it's done. Thank God. I kinda like where it went. I'm pretty proud of this, actually. Even though I may have cheated a little and borrowed some dialogue from another one of my stories. So I have some writer's block. Sue me.
Also, there is a special guest character in this chapter! Somepony awesome. One of my favorite characters. But You'll see who I'm talking about.
Oh, and prep yourselves for some FLUTTER RAGE.
Thank you Josh for the idea of this chapter. You are fabulous, but you already knew that. You already know I'm grateful too, so do I really need to say much else? I don't think so. Not this time, at least.
Thank you to all you lovely readers who have taken the time to read this far! I appreciate you all so much! I would be nothing without you guys!
Enjoy the chapter!
Fluttersitting
When Twilight woke the next morning, the dream was fresh in her mind. She wondered if her mentor had truly visited her dream with a bit of help from her sister. She threw off her blanket and went into the nursery. Spike was still asleep, sucking on a pacifier and cuddling with one of the plushies Pinkie had given him. He looked so peaceful, and Twilight watched over, mulling things over in her mind. As she stared at him, she knew she had found her life’s purpose. Taking care of him had become the greatest joy of her life. Nothing had made her feel so complete. She thought over what her mentor had told her, identifying her emotions at the same time. She was about to think further on what could be done, when Spike began to stir. She smiled and went over to him, rubbing his back. He opened his eyes and smiled when he saw his Mommy standing over him.
The morning went by quickly, with nothing out of the ordinary happening. Twilight made breakfast, fed Spike, and bathed. Spike was quick to finish his chores for the day, and was playing with his toys when a knock came to the door. Twilight opened the door to see Applejack standing there.
“Applejack!” She greeted.
“Howdy, Twilight. How are ya?” She asked.
“I’m great.” She said, letting her inside. Applejack saw Spike playing and smiled.
“Hiya, Spike.”
Spike looked up and smiled. “Hi Auntie Applejack!” She smiled. Twilight shut the door.
“What can I do for you?” Twilight asked.
“I was wondering if you could give me a hoof over at Sweet Apple Acres. It’s Zap Apple season, and I could use a hoof collecting the Zap Apples.”
“Of course! I’d love to help. I just need to find Somepony to watch Spike for me.”
“Why don’t ya ask Fluttershy? I’m sure she’d be glad ta do it!” Applejack said.
“That’s a great idea!” Said Twilight.
“Want me to get her for you?” She asked.
“That would be wonderful.” She said.
“I’ll be right back.” Said Applejack. Twilight nodded, then went over to Spike.
“Spike, pumpkin?” She asked. Spike looked up at her.
“Hi Mama.” He said.
“Hi baby. Mommy’s going to go help Auntie Applejack today, so Auntie Fluttershy will be coming over to take care of you. Okay?”
“Yes Mama.” He said. But his stomach growled. Twilight smiled.
“Sounds like somepony’s hungry!” She cooed. Spike giggled, and Twilight picked him up and sat him down in a high chair. He was grateful when he sat down, though. His mother set a bowl of applesauce in front of him, and he licked his lips in excitement. His mother sat down beside him, and grabbed the spoon from the bowl, and began to feed her son. Spike excitedly opened his mouth and let the spoon in, humming happily as the applesauce hit his tongue. It tasted just like Applejack’s recipe, and knowing his mother and Auntie, it probably was. He swallowed happily.
“Good boy, Spikey!” Praised Twilight. Spike beamed at the praise, and his mother took the spoon and fed him another bite of applesauce.
“The dragon’s coming in for a landing!” She said, making plane noises and making the spoon twirl in the air. Spike clapped his claws and opened his mouth. The applesauce was warm as it slid down his throat, leaving a warm feeling in his throat and stomach.
She fed Spike until the applesauce was gone. However, the applesauce didn’t fill him up all of the way. He still felt hungry. Twilight was well aware of this fact. There had always been a certain face that he made when she was full, one she doubted Spike even knew he had. She got up from her seated position and went back into the kitchen, returning with a plate of carrots she had mashed herself. Spike ate the mashed food until the plate was empty. Leaning back, he finally felt full. He sighed contentedly. Twilight saw him making her I’m-full face, and smiled. Knowing what would come next, she looked to the kitchen, got up and was preparing him a bottle.
She fed her baby dragon, and he suckled slowly. Very quickly, he was asleep. She magically lifted him up, and tucked him into bed.
“Have a good nap, Spike. Mommy will be back soon.” She whispered, and gave him a pacifier and a plushie to cuddle.
When she came out, Applejack was back with Fluttershy. Twilight hugged Fluttershy and thanked her. “He’s taking a nap right now. I just fed him lunch, so he should be good for a while.” She explained.
Fluttershy nodded. “I’m sure we’ll be fine, Twilight.” She said. Twilight nodded, blushing a bit at the fact that she was being so maternal. With a final goodbye, she left.
Spike slept for about an hour and a half before waking. Fluttershy changed him, and then sat in the nursery, playing whatever games he wanted. They were in the middle of building a city with blocks when an audible pop sounded in the room. Fluttershy thought it was Twilight, but she turned to see Discord holding a platter of cucumber sandwiches with his jaw on the floor.
“Oh dear. Discord, did I forget our afternoon tea?” She asked. She did not notice Spike hiding behind her in embarrassment.
“I thought I would bring it to you, but I can see you’ve got your hooves full.” He said, trying not to snigger. He disappeared and reappeared behind Spike. “I must say, when Fluttershy first told me that you were a baby dragon, I didn’t quite think it went this far!” He said, before bursting into loud guffaws. Spike lowered his head in shame. A tear went down his cheek. Fluttershy took one look at him, and felt her anger ignite like a raging fire. She flew right up to Discord and looked him straight in the eye.
“How dare you?! What gives you the right to make fun of him for being himself?! You’d better watch your step, Discord! He’s my responsibility, and if you’re my friend, You wouldn’t dare make fun of him! You got that, mister?” She said, deadly serious. Discord shrunk back.
“Well I- I didn’t mean to- I’m sorry.” He said, defeated.
“Now you’ve apologized to me. But you need to apologize to Spike.” She said, crossing her hooves.
“I’m sorry, Spike.” He said, bowing his head in shame.
Spike slowly lifted his head, and saw this display. “It’s ‘kay.” He said. Discord looked up and smiled the tiniest bit.
Spike went and grabbed a block, and handed it to him. “Play?”
Discord smiled. “Alright.”
With that, the three spent the afternoon playing together.

Journey
When Twilight came home, she was surprised to see Discord there. But what surprised her more was the way Discord was playing with Spike and the way Spike responded to him. It was almost like they were becoming friends. This puzzled her, but if Spike was having a good time and Discord wasn’t wrecking the place, she wasn’t complaining. After she greeted Spike, she allowed him and Discord to play for as long as they liked, and only yelled at Discord once for making her books fly around the library to entertain Spike. But she only yelled halfheartedly because despite the annoyance it gave her, Spike had loved it, and she couldn’t deny what made him happy.
It was later that night, when Spike was asleep and the library was quiet, that her musings on the previous night’s dream came back to her. She had indeed remembered what the Princess had meant. And now, she wondered if she could do it.
Did she love Spike? Of course. There was no question about that. She loved him more than anything. But could she go the distance? She thought that maybe she could. She felt ready to take this next step.
Adoption.
She decided that tomorrow she would go to Canterlot and speak to the Princess. But for now, she would get some well deserved rest.
The next morning, she caught the early train to Canterlot. Spike had been asked to spend the day with Pinkie Pie, taking care of the Cake Twins.
The Ponyville Express pulled up and Twilight boarded. As she watched the scenery pass her by, she reflected on the time she had had with Spike. From the second she hatched him, She knew he was special. She had loved him from that very first moment. Those first few weeks when she had to be away from him were tough, but when they were reunited, she was overjoyed. She got to watch him learn and grow, and saw him mature. Every moment was perfection. Together they had everything they ever needed.
All too soon, the train stopped, as did her reminiscing. She exited the train, lost in her thoughts, and quickly found herself at the castle. She bowed to the guards who graciously allowed her inside. She was walking down the hall when she saw Princess Luna coming down the opposite side. The princess of the night smiled at her sister’s prized pupil.
“Twilight Sparkle. How lovely to see you.” She said.
“Princess Luna!” Twilight exclaimed, bowing to her. “How are you?” She asked.
“Quite well. I have just returned from the dream realm. I am on my way to the dining hall to eat dinner. I assume that you’re here because of your dream?”
“How did you-“ She cut herself off. Of course Luna would know. “Did you give me that dream?”
“I’m afraid not. Dreams come from the subconscious, from what you desire most. I’m afraid that I do not have the power to give anypony dreams. I can create shared dreams, and I can insert certain elements into dreams, but I cannot give what was not already there.” She explained.
“So… You’re saying this was all me?”
“Yes. I think so.”
“So the idea… It wasn’t-“
“The idea was already in your head and your heart.” Luna confirmed.
Twilight smiled. “So you were there? You saw what I was thinking?”
“Yes. And I have to say I was quite pleased with what I saw.”
“You were?” Luna nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Luna paused. “You know, While I hated my banishment to the moon, I do think some good came out of it.”
“Huh? But we were just talking about Spike?”
“We were, and if you’d follow me, you’d see we still are.”
“Alright.” Twilight said.
“When I was banished, my sister seriously rethought some of her life choices. I think she realized that she didn’t want to be alone, and she didn’t want anypony else to be either. She told me quite a bit about the feelings she had when she first met you. She saw you hatch Spike, and noticed your immense power. As my sister observed you in the classroom she noticed that you were very isolated. She often pondered what she could do to help you get out of your shell. Then, she remembered Spike, and thought that perhaps he would be the key to getting you to open up. So she gave him to you. You know, He used to reach for you when he saw you in windows.”
“I remember your sister telling me about that.” She said.
“She knew that you both needed each other. I’d like to think that there was some sort of divine magic looking over you two. It was just meant to be.” She smiled.
Twilight smiled. “Thank you, Princess.”
“You’re most welcome.” Said the princess of the night. With those words of encouragement, Princess Luna went off to the dining hall, Leaving Twilight on her own. She made her way down the rest of the hall while meditating on what Luna had said. Then, she finally reached the doors. Taking in a breath, she opened up the doors to the throne room, and smiled when she saw her mentor.
“Princess Celestia!” She said, and hugged her.
“Twilight Sparkle! How are you, my student?” Celestia asked, hugging her back.
“I’m great.” She said.
“What brings you to Canterlot?” Asked the Princess.
“I was wondering if you could help me with something important.”
“Of course, Twilight.” She said. “What can I do for you?”
“Would you help me to adopt Spike?” She asked. The Princess smiled at her student.
“Of course, Twilight.” Twilight’s eyes lit up.
“Really?”
“Absolutely. I will take care of all of the paperwork personally. I should have it ready for you to sign by next week. Would you be able to come back to Canterlot to sign?”
“Of course, princess.”
“Thank you, Twilight. I am so proud of you.” She said. Twilight blushed.
“Really?”
“I always have been, and always am.” She replied. “I’m only surprised that this didn’t happen sooner.”
Twilight smiled. “Just had a few hurdles along the way.”
“I’ll see you next week, then?”
“You can count on me.”
Twilight hugged her mentor one last time before heading back to Ponyville.

The Happy Ending
Twilight spent the rest of the day flying high from her mentor’s announcement. Soon, so soon would Spike see just how much he meant to her. She knew she would have to keep this to herself, though, if she wanted it to stay a surprise. She couldn’t tell a soul. Not even her friends. Not if she wanted to keep it as amazing as she intended it to be. She got home from the train station, put her saddlebags away, and then went to pick up Spike from Sugarcube Corner. Spike had been so excited to see her when she came in, and it filled her with joy. She hugged him tightly and pecked him on the head. He was perfect. She thanked Pinkie for watching over him, and took him home soon after.
That next week went by slower than molasses for Twilight, and she silently got more on edge as the day drew nearer. When her friends came to see her, they noticed that something seemed to be off with her. But they collectively decided to wait it out a few more days before they confronted her on it. However, the day after they decided to do this, Twilight informed them that she would be taking a trip to Canterlot to see the princess, and they thought that that might be what was causing her distress. They all agreed to watch Spike as a group that day, and Twilight was relieved. It would mean less work for her when she came back. She wanted to tell all of them at once what was going on, and it would be much easier when they were all in one place.
When that day finally came, Twilight was so excited she could barely stand it. She hugged her friends and kissed Spike goodbye, before she took off for Canterlot. As the train exited the station, a tingling feeling came over her. It traveled inside of her chest and went all the way down to her hooves. This was the moment that would begin the rest of her life. And she couldn’t wait to see what it brought her. The ride was over more quickly than she thought it would be, and then she was making her way to the castle. Walking there was agonizingly slow compared to how quickly she could have been there if she had teleported there. But a part of her wanted to make this day last as long as possible.
After what seemed like an eternity, she made it to the castle. It took everything she had not to run through the halls and race to the throne room. She did not see Princess Luna like she did the last time she was here, but she got the sense that the Princess of the night was watching her, and was proud of her nonetheless. The hallway seemed endless, but at last she made it to the doors. She pushed them open, fighting the urge to sigh in relief.
There on her throne, sat Princeess Celestia, who smiled at her in greeting.
“Twilight Sparkle. Right on time as always.” She said.
Twilight bowed respectfully to her mentor. “Princess Celestia. Thank you so much for taking the time to see me today.”
“Of course, my student.” She said. “I have everything right here for you to sign.” The princess pulled out a small stack of papers.
Twilight grinned. “Thank you, Princess.” She said, and took a quill and ink in her magic to sign the papers.
She signed each form, reading it over carefully, and signing next to where the princess had already put her signature. Quickly, the last forms were signed, and Twilight was grinning ear to ear.
“Congratulations, Twilight. You are now officially Spike’s mother.”
Twilight could not contain the joy inside of her and leapt on her mentor in a giant hug. “Oh, thank you Princess Celestia!”
The Princess froze for the barest second before hugging her student back. “You’re very welcome, Twilight.”
Twilight let her go, blushing. “If you’re able to come, I’m telling Spike and the girls about everything today with a party.”
“I’d be delighted to.” She said.
Twilight’s eyes lit up. “Really?”
“Of course. I’ll be there.” She promised.
“Thank you, Princess.”
“Anytime, Twilight.”
Celestia gave Twilight a copy of the papers, which she put into her saddlebag. With one last thank you, she went to board the train back to Ponyville.
The ride back seemed to somehow take longer than the ride there, and Twilight was bursting with jubilation. She was relieved when the train pulled in.
Twilight couldn’t contain herself and teleported home. When she opened up the door, her friends and Spike were inside, all gathered in a circle and playing together. When she entered, everypony looked up. Spike grinned and ran over to her.
“Mama!” He called. She hugged him happily.
“Hey there, Pumpkin! How are you?”
“Good!” He said.
Twilight kissed his nose. “Good. And I have a very special surprise for you.”
Spike’s eyes brightened. “Really?”
Twilight nodded. “Oh yes. The most special surprise there has ever been.”
“Really?!” He squealed.
“Yes! But first, we need to get ready.”
“Huh?”
“We need to get ready.” Twilight said. She looked up to Pinkie. “Pinkie, do you still have some emergency party supplies here?”
“Pffft, Twilight, did you get loco in the coco? You are talking to the party planner in Ponyville. Of course I do!” Said Pinkie. She pulled out a party cannon and pulled it, and instantly the room was decorated, complete with a cake. Twilight grinned.
“It looks perfect, Pinkie. Thank you.”
“It looks beautiful, darling. But would you mind telling us what we’re celebrating?”
“I’ll tell you as soon as our last guest gets here.”
“No need,” Said a familiar voice. “I’m already here.”
“Princess Celestia!” They all chorused, and bowed to her. The Princess chuckled.
“Thank You, everypony.” She said. “Now, I believe Twilight had something to tell you.”
“Yes,” Said Twilight. She turned to Spike, eyes flickering with a dozen different emotions. “Spike, from the moment I hatched you, I knew you were special. You were everything I could ever want in a friend. But you were even more than that to me. As time went on, You became my brother, and now, now you’re my son. So I have a gift for you to celebrate that.” She said, and used her magic to get out the papers. She handed them to Spike. His eyes bugged out as he saw the title.
“Adoption papers?”
Every jaw in the room dropped at that. Then, Twilight nodded. “I love you, Spike. And I want to prove it to you. I want to take care of you every day for the rest of my life.”
Everypony in the room had tears running down their face, and were smiling. Even Princess Celestia couldn’t help wiping away a teardrop or two.
Spike’s lips trembled and his eyes welled up. He threw himself into Twilight’s coat.
“I love you so much, Mama!”
And then, Twilight was crying too. “I love you too, Spike. I’m so proud to officially call you my son.”
Their friends all gathered around them in a giant group hug. Twilight knew that whatever life had to bring her, this moment was the best one of her life. And she knew that whatever trials were to come, She would face them with her friends by her side.
And, of course, her son.
