Twilight Sparkle wiped her brow with a hoof, sighing in relief. “We finally did it, Spike. We re-catalogued the entire library, and it only took one day!” She clopped her hooves together, eyes closed in ecstasy. “I’m so happy,” Spike deadpanned as he plopped face-first into his comfortable pillow that had been calling his name all day. “Now then,” Twilight said, digging through her desk. “Where exactly did we put the scrolls and ink?” Her once clean desk erupted into a shower of hoofwritten notes and thrown quills as she dug around. She had never met a mole before, so she had no concept of the style of digging. “Spike, what did you do with my friendship report supplies? I had them right here, in a box marked ‘Friendship Report Supplies – Do Not Throw Away’.” Spike snored in response. Twilight sighed and sat down. “How do I write about the need for a clean library without my friendship report supplies?” A whooshing sound broke her train of thought, and the air in the centre of the library’s bottom floor distorted, like a great drain in space had just been pulled. With a blinding flash and deafening roar, a pony appeared where the vortex had been. A very familiar pony. A violet pony with a ragged mane and eyepatch. “Oh no.” Twilight groaned. “I came back from the future again.” “Yes! Back from the future, again!” the other her asked, voice as sharp as a knife. “We have to get to Canterlot as soon as possible! A terrible tragedy is about to unfold.” “What kind of tragedy? Changelings? Discord? Oh no, is the royal toilet clogged again?” “Worse! In the future I come from, Canterlot and all of Ponyville are in ruins because of a devastating weapon called an atom bomb and Princess Celestia has been foalnapped by a gang of Diamond Dog bikers! We must go back to the future and save her, and then come back from the future to prevent the bomb from going off in the first place!” Twilight blinked, jaw hanging in awe. “That sounds horrible. You look horrible.” Patchy Twilight narrowed her good eye. “I’ve seen some manure. Things you wouldn’t believe. Airships on fire off the back of Manedolluin. I watched magicka glitter in the dark near Tartarus’s Gate...” The two Twilights stared at each other, their violet eyes reflecting themselves. For a long moment they were lost in each other’s gaze. “Screw it.” Twilight’s voice was even firmer than her future self’s. “Let’s make out.” They made out. "It's simple," she said, raising her voice above the crowd noise at the Canterlot Summer Nights street fair. "Have you heard of 'Two Truths and a Lie'? Give me a bit, and tell me two true things about yourself and one false fact. If I can't guess it, you win five bits." "Err ... five?" "Yep! Then you can either walk away with it, or guess MY lie for double or nothing." The stallion tapped his chin thoughtfully. "Statistically speaking, you'd lose bits 'oof over flank at those odds. What's the catch?" Twilight chuckled. "I do lose money on it -- not as much as you'd think, since I've been studying ponies a long time -- but I'm a writer." She gestured at her stack of books to one side. "I consider it a research expense. The best facts add color to my stories." "Can't argue with that. 'Ere." The earth pony reached back to the saddlebags over his hourglass mark and flipped her a bit with his teeth. Then he glanced around, leaned in, and whispered. Twilight's eyes widened. "Uh ..." She stared into his eyes. "You ... you're serious? You look serious. Two of those are *true*?" He grinned. "Bit of a sticky wicket, that. But two I've seen meself, and one I made up, so let's go with 'yes'." "Uh," the unicorn repeated, clearly thrown, "the second?" He laughed. "No, but you can use that and the third in your stories -- if anypony will believe them. 'Ere ... I'll take pity on you. Double or nothing?" "Um." But this, at least, put her back on familiar ground. "I'll have to try the magic set. One: Princess Celestia personally taught me magic, before she vanished defeating Nightmare Moon. Two: I've singlehornedly raised the sun. Three: Under a pseudonym, I wrote Equestria's most popular magical studies textbook." The smile never left the earth pony's face. "The second's not true ... *yet*." Twilight gave him a curious stare, then shook her head. "Well ... you've certainly earned these." She levitated ten bits his way. "Whoever you are." "Keep 'em, lass." He turned and trotted away, calling over his shoulder, "you'll want them in a minute!" "What a strange ..." Twilight muttered, but was interrupted by a polite throat-clearing. She turned, muzzle almost smacking into a bit held in hornshimmer. Her eyes focused out beyond the coin. Twilight froze. That was *impossible* -- like looking in a mirror, but with *wings* -- "One," the stranger said calmly, "I'm Twilight Sparkle. Two: We need your help to save Equestria. Three: I have five hooves." Where are you!” “Oof!” Spike said as he fell from his perch on a windowsill above the floor of the library. “Ugh, sorry. What’s up, Twilight?” “I was hoping you could run a few letters to everypony.” Twilight said. “Alright..? What’s it for?” Spike said. Twilight said, “Oh, nothing at all I was just-” A massive explosion of light engulfed the room. Before them stood an elderly mare, her coat a waxen purple and hair streaked silver. Her wrinkled eyes looked around the room with nostalgia before she was taken aback almost by Spike with a wistful smile. “Ummm...Hello?” Twilight said, “Who are you?” She looked up at Twilight and said, “An old friend, Twilight Sparkle.” Twilight caught a glimpse of her cutie mark, it was a star surrounded by-It was her cutie mark. Even against her aged fur, it was clearly visible. Twilight’s jaw nearly hit the ground. “You’re me! What are you doing here? Why do you-I look so old?” Twilight said in quick succession, particularly disturbed by the last question. The elder Twilight laughed. “Well, I’m old, Twilight. I came back here with a purpose” she said with a soft, understanding smile. “What, is Equestria in danger?” Twilight said with a little excited hop. “No, no. I merely came to see my old friend again-for probably the last time.” Twilight said as she glanced towards the dragon at the young Twilight’s side. “Me?” Spike said, pointing at himself. The old Twilight nodded as she walked over to him. “You look so young. Oh, how I’ve missed you, Spike.” Twilight said, digging her nose into his scales, nuzzling him gently. “Everyday-everyday since you left I’ve thought about you.” The older Twilight held the tiny dragon close to her as possible. She could feel his heart beating against his chest, feel his breath rustle her mane and she could touch those magnificent scales. She pulled away from him for a moment to stare into his big, beautiful green emeralds that she knew so well. A mixture of emotions poured through Spike mind as he looked into the familiar, but worn, purple eyes. She said calmly, “I only wish you could have been at my side in the end-but you have such a life to live, all that I can ask is that you remember me. I’ll be waiting for you across that glistening sea, my greatest friend.” She hugged him close again as tears began to swell and fall down her face, splashing onto his scales. She started to glow and fade, but she never let him go. Even as she faded away-she held to him, repeating, “I love you” as she disappeared in a flash of light, leaving only the tears that clung to his chest behind. Then she was back in Canterlot, Celestia at her side in grim silence. Twilight looked across the sky and she swore she could see a dragon on the distant horizon. They were so close to his, but so feminine, so filled with beauty. Their faces were so near, they were sharing each other’s breath. Twilight Sparkle, she called herself. Dusk cast a glance to one side, then another. It was just the two of them in the dusty old library. Nearly identical to his own. “Looks like we’re the only ones here.” “Heh, heh, He’s probably out on an errand right now.” Twilight coughed uncomfortably, covering her mouth with her hoof. The two broke eye contact for a moment, pretending to examine the bookshelves, as though one of the dusty old tomes would contain the solution to the dilemma at hand. Finding nothing, they again turned to face one another again. Despite having known his alternate self for but a few hours, he was painfully aware of the bond between them causing their muzzles to drift closer and closer together. He looked down at his hooves, avoiding her gaze. “This was a stupid idea, wasn’t it?” She opened her mouth to give some reassurance, but no words came. The sound of a door opening sent Twilight’s head turning so fast, it nearly gave Dusk whiplash. “Spike!” He saw a baby dragon, jaw hanging wide open, standing in the doorway. “Twilight! What’s going on? Who is this? What are you two doing?” “We’ve been looking everywhere for you! Could you lend a hoof? Dusk and I...” She gave a mighty sigh of embarrassment. ”...
