chapter 1, The Mad Hatter
Hatter’s eyes slowly opened, staring up at a cold gray concrete ceiling as he rolled out of his dog bed and back onto his hooves, slowly shaking the sleep from his body and the tension from his muscles. He looked to the tiny clock on his wall and discovered that he had once again woken up just on time.
He moved over to the chute placed against one side of the wall, waiting patiently for his morning food ration. The chute opened a moment later, and a healthy slop of oats and ground up minerals poured into his dog bowl. After this was done, he moved over to the final feature of his cell, little more then a tattered poster of a very pretty blue griffon. All the cells were identical in the way they were built along one massive stone corridor, but those with higher ranks had nicer things in them. Down here they just had flickering office lights that often broke and never seemed to get replaced.
