Spitfire's eyes widen as she looks at her own funeral.
On the far side of the chapel, in front of an open casket, there's an easel holding up a large photo of her.
"Whoa, there must've been a mix-up!" Spitfire walks down the aisle. "I'm not dead!"
Nopony looks at her. All of the ponies sitting on both sides of the aisle just keep staring ahead.
"Didn't you hear me? I'm alive!" Spitfire approaches the casket. "Whoever's in there, it's not me! I'm --"
She looks into the casket and gasps.
Lying inside is Spitfire -- or, at least, an old version of her. Her mane is white. Her hide is gaunt. Her eyes are closed.
"Wh-what's going on?!" the younger Spitfire exclaims.
She turns around to face the mourners. Old-looking versions of Soarin, Fleetfoot, and her other fellow Wonderbolts sit in the front row. Younger Pegasi, also in Wonderbolt uniforms, occupy the second row.
"...Did I time-travel somehow?!" Spitfire walks up to the white-maned Soarin. "Hey!! Answer me!!"
He doesn't respond, or even look at her. His misty eyes keep staring ahead.
"Can anypony hear me?!" Spitfire shouts.
"I can," says a voice behind her.
Spitfire meeps and turns around. Luna is standing next to the casket.
"P-Princess!" The Pegasus kneels. "You can hear me? Where'd you come from?? Are you here for my funeral?"
"You could say that," Luna replies.
Meanwhile, a young female Pegasus in a Wonderbolt uniform walks behind a podium near the casket. "Good morning, everypony. Thank you all for coming. We're here to celebrate the life and legacy of Captain Spitfire, who peacefully passed away --"
"No I didn't!!" Spitfire yells. "I'm right here!!"
While she shouts, the other Pegasus keeps talking. "-- in her sleep a few nights ago."
Spitfire turns back to Luna. "Why is everypony ignoring me?!"
The princess grins. "You have not figured it out yet?"
The Pegasus looks around the chapel, then back at Luna. Then she smacks her forehead.
"Of course... this is a dream, isn't it?"
Luna nods. "To paraphrase Bronc Twain, 'reports of your death have been greatly exaggerated.'"
Spitfire smirks. "Mystery solved, then."
"One of them, perhaps," the princess replies. "The real mystery is, why are you dreaming about your own funeral?"
The Pegasus shrugs. "How should I know? Dreams are weird."
"Yes, but they happen for a reason. Dreams are often manifestations of our greatest fears." Luna looks at the old version of Spitfire in the casket. "Tell me, Captain Spitfire... do you fear death?"
"If I did, I'd be in the wrong profession," the Pegasus smirks. "I defy death every day~"
"So you say." Luna turns to look at the mourners. "The chapel is only half-full... do you fear being forgotten after you're gone?"
Spitfire shakes her head. "I couldn't care less if everypony forgets me the day after I die. The only thing that matters to me is making a difference as a trainer and a leader."
The princess turns back to the Pegasus. "There has to be -something- wrong with this picture."
"Says who?" Spitfire retorts. "Listen, Princess. I know dreams are important to you, but sometimes, they don't mean anything. There's no hidden message here."
Meanwhile, the mare behind the podium keeps speaking. "She is survived by the Wonderbolts who had the honor of serving with her, and the scores of trainees whom she made into better flyers and better ponies."
Spitfire blinks. "...Wait. That's it? Didn't I leave behind any family?"
"You are not a mother, are you?" Luna asks. "Do you plan to have foals someday?"
"Well, no, but... Well, I figured I'd be married, or at least in a relationship, by the time I died..." Spitfire looks around the chapel. "But the only ponies I recognize are the old Wonderbolts. And I'd never date a teammate."
"Hmm... perhaps it is not dying you fear, but rather, dying alone," Luna says.
Spitfire frowns. "Nonsense. Having a special somepony would be nice, but I'd never lose any sleep over not having one."
Meanwhile, the mare behind the podium says, "Captain Spitfire was more than my mentor. She was my friend. I'll always fondly remember the evenings that she spent with me and my wife, regaling us with tales of her glory days..."
Spitfire cringes. "She has a wife? Where'd she find the time to date somepony?? I can tell by her uniform that he succeeded me as captain -- she can't have much free time!"
"The long hours must be stressful," Luna says.
"Very. Looking for recruits, developing training programs for recruits, actually training recruits... and that's just the recruitment side of the job." Spitfire sighs. "I also have to schedule events, choreograph shows, create and stick to budgets, oversee maintenance of the headquarters and training grounds..."
"That is a lot of work for one pony," the princess remarks.
"I know, right?!" the Pegasus exclaims. "Sometimes I think we should have two co-captains. Leading the Wonderbolts is too much for one pony to handle!"
"Some ponies say the same thing about life itself," Luna replies. "Why face it alone, when you could have a life partner?"
Spitfire snorts. "Partners are for missions and training exercises. If somepony needs a partner just to get through day-to-day life, they must be a real wimp."
"So, your successor is a wimp?" Luna asks, looking at the mare behind the podium.
The pegasus frowns. "I didn't say that. I just... ugh, nevermind. I'm going back to sleep. Or waking up. Whatever. You know what I mean."
"Very well." Luna's horn glows. "I apologize for interrupting your dream, Captain Spitfire. Please take care."
She teleports out of sight.
Spitfire walks over to the casket and looks at the old version of herself. She reaches out to touch her future self's shoulder.
Suddenly, she's lying in bed, reaching toward a pillow.
Spitfire blinks. Then she frowns and sighs.
"I don't need anypony," she says to her empty bedroom.
Luna squints as she looks through a telescope on Canterlot Castle's highest balcony.
She zooms in on a twinkling yellow dot in the night sky. "...Strange. There is a star that I do not know."
The dot grows. "...Wait. That is no star. I see wings... Is that Captain Spitfire?"
The Pegasus heads for the balcony, and lands next to Luna.
"Captain Spitfire!" Luna exclaims. "What is the emergency??"
Spitfire blinks. "There's no emergency. Why'd you think there was?"
"You look exhausted," Luna replies.
The Pegasus's bloodshot eyes look up at her messy mane. "Oh, I've just been having trouble sleeping."
"Is that why you came all the way here?" the princess asks.
"Sort of. I had a day off, and I wanted to see you." Spitfire sighs. "I've been thinking a lot about last week. I feel like I was rude when I dismissed your ideas about what my dream meant. So I brought you a gift to say sorry."
She reaches into her saddlebag and pulls out a clear glass bottle with a cork in it. Inside the bottle is a thick, black cloud. Every few seconds, a flash of light illuminates the cloud.
"This is a piece of a stormcloud that I got from Cloudsdale's weather factory as a filly," the Pegasus explains. "Sometimes, when I feel overwhelmed, I look at it, and I imagine that the stormcloud represents all my problems, safely bottled up."
"Thank you, Captain Spitfire," Luna smiles. "Though, are you certain you wish to part with this? I would hate to deprive you of a tool for dealing with stress."
"I'll be fine," Spitfire replies. "Plus, maybe it'll help you. I imagine my problems are nothing compared to a princess's."
Luna grins. "Perhaps. Thank you kindly." She levitates the bottle into her bedchamber.
"Sure thing," the Pegasus says. "Anyway, flying all day has left me famished. Wanna grab a bite?"
"I would like that," the Princess smiles.
The two mares fly to Restaurant Row and enter an eatery. Once seated, they order tea and grass sandwiches.
"So... if you do not mind my asking, have you reconsidered your stance on life partners?" Luna asks.
Spitfire shakes her head. "Nah. I still don't think they're for me. I mean, I do feel like I was rude to you -- not because of what I said, but because of how I said it."
"Understood." The princess sips her tea. "How goes your job? If I am not mistaken, it is recruitment season."
"Yeah. Also known as headache season." The Pegasus rubs her forehead. "I love yelling and blowing my whistle. But sometimes the stress gets to me.
"I made this one young mare a lead pony, and she ended up making tornadoes to bust clouds. It was so dangerous -- somepony could've ended up in a full-body wing-and-hoof cast drinking through a straw.
"Understandably, the mare's wingpony wanted to quit. Luckily, I realized my mistake, and talked her into staying."
"You feel guilty for not realizing your mistake sooner," Luna says.
"Yeah, exactly." Spitfire sighs. "I put everypony at risk because I didn't figure out how reckless that mare was. I should've known."
"Were there any clues that you did not pick up on?" the princess asks.
"Hmm..." The Pegasus purses her lips. "Well, she pushed herself harder than anypony else during the first day of training. I took that as a good thing. Maybe I shouldn't have. I dunno."
"Hindsight is 20/20," Luna says. "Do you truly think that her eagerness during training gave you reason to believe that she would engage in dangerous behavior?"
"I... I guess not." Spitfire rubs her forehead again. "But it doesn't matter whether or not I should've seen her behavior coming. Either way, as the captain, I'm responsible for what happened. Leaders take responsibility, even if something's not their fault."
"Spoken like a true leader," the princess replies. "The hardest part of leading is taking the blame for a problem that you did not cause."
"Kinda like you did, with the whole Nightmare Moon thing?" Spitfire asks.
Luna frowns. "No, Nightmare Moon was my fault. My own choices left me vulnerable to corruption. I regret that every day."
"All that guilt might bite you in the flank someday," the Pegasus says.
The princess sighs. "If it does, I will deserve it."
Spitfire opens her mouth to reply, but she's interrupted when their food is served. The two mares begin eating in silence.
By the time their plates are clean, they're smiling and talking again.
"Are you certain that it works?" Luna asks.
"Positive. A hot bath is the perfect cure for sore wings." Spitfire smirks. "I'm surprised you didn't know that already, given your age."
The princess smiles. "Well, I spent much of my life on the moon... And, before I was banished, biology was not as advanced as it is today. I was always told that rest is the only treatment for sore wings."
"Rest isn't a bad idea, but sometimes, you just don't have the time. I know I usually don't." The Pegasus yawns. "Speaking of which, I'd better head back to the academy soon. Gotta run more drills in the morning."
Luna nods and leaves a pile of bits on the table. The two mares walk outside, then take to the air.
"Thanks for the meal," Spitfire says as they fly toward Canterlot Castle. "And for letting me vent. You're a really good listener."
"My pleasure," Luna smiles. "I have enjoyed your company."
"Maybe we could hang out again sometime? Like, on a date?" the Pegasus asks.
The princess raises an eyebrow. "I thought you were not interested in dating?"
"I wasn't. I mean, I'm not. I just..." Spitfire sighs. "I like spending time with you."
Luna blushes. "I... I enjoy spending time with you, too. But I do not think that dating would be a good idea."
The Pegasus frowns. "What? Why not?"
"I do not date," the princess explains. "Even if I found somepony who was perfect for me, and we spent many happy years together... she would pass away in a matter of decades, and I would be forced to live on, heartbroken, for thousands of years."
"...So what?" Spitfire retorts. "Why choose to be lonely your whole life, when you could at least spend a little bit of it happy?"
Luna frowns. "I do not mean to sound rude, but you do not understand what it is like to be an Alicorn. Longevity is a curse that I would not wish on anypony."
"Oh, gee, I'm sorry," the Pegasus replies in a sarcastic tone. "I had no idea how -terrible- it is to live a long time. I'm -so- lucky that I'm gonna die soon."
The princess's brow furrows. "How dare you speak to me that way?! You forget your place -- you are a mere captain, not a royal!"
"MERE captain?!" Spitfire grits her teeth. "I may not be helping run the country, but at least -I- never tried to take it over!!"
Luna's nostrils flare. "That was beyond the pale!!"
"And another thing!!" the Pegasus yells. "I'd much rather be a MERE captain than a hypocrite like you!! You chide me for regretting my mistakes, yet you feel so guilty for your own. You encourage me to find a life partner, yet you refuse to do the same. What's the point of giving advice that you don't even follow?!"
The princess's cheeks redden. "You compare apples and oranges!! Your failure to realize a trainee's recklessness was nothing compared to my betrayal of my sister and my country! And, unless I marry another Alicorn, I cannot have a true 'life partner,' because nopony else will even come close to living as long as I will!!"
Spitfire frowns. "You know what? On second thought, maybe it's a good thing you don't date. Your negativity would make anypony's life feel like an eternity!!"
The mares arrive at Canterlot Castle's highest balcony. Luna glares at Spitfire. "At last, our time together is at an end. I am glad to part ways."
"Me too!" the Pegasus fumes. "Good riddance, Princess."
She flies away.
Luna watches her fly for a few moments, then storms into her bedchamber. The bottle with a piece of a stormcloud sits on top of her dresser.
The princess glares at the stormcloud as lightning sporadically flashes within it.
Then she bursts into tears, jumps onto her bed, and buries her face in a pillow.
"I-I need nopony," she says to her empty bedchamber.

The two mares walk outside, fly across the training grounds, and sit beside a rainbow waterfall.
Luna looks at Spitfire. "When you asked me out yesterday, it dredged up a bad memory... May I tell you about it?"
"Go ahead," the Pegasus says.
The princess takes a deep breath. "Long ago, back before I was banished, I was interested in a particular mare. She was so kind to me, and I always enjoyed spending time with her. But I never could work up the courage to ask her out.
"I kept putting it off, always thinking that I would have time to ask her for a date later. Weeks became months, months became years, years became decades..."
"The whole time, I always looked the same. Meanwhile, she went from being a young mare to a middle-aged one, then an old one... and then, finally, she died. And I never told her about my feelings for her.
"Ever since then, I have told myself that I made the right decision. That I should not have pursued a relationship with her. That I would have been heartbroken, no matter what happened.
"She could have declined to date me. Or, she could have said yes, but made a terrible fillyfriend for some reason. Or, she could have said yes, and made an excellent fillyfriend, and we could have spent many wonderful decades together... and then she would have died, just the same.
"But, now, I shall never know what would have happened if I had asked her out. And, deep down, I know that the chance of brief happiness outweighed the risk of heartbreak. Not telling her about my feelings has been one of the biggest of my many regrets."
Spitfire looks at Luna. "That sucks. You know, I think I finally get what you meant yesterday. Longevity must be a pain."
"Indeed." Luna sighs.
"...But, if you regret not asking out that mare, why don't you date now?" the Pegasus asks. "I mean, you'd be okay with outliving a life partner, right?"
"I would be, but... I have felt as though I would be disloyal to my first love interest if I dated somepony else." The princess grins. "I know it sounds silly. After all, I never even dated her, much less committed to her."
"Aww... that's kind of cute," Spitfire smirks. "You're so loyal, you stay faithful to a crush you never even dated."
"'Cute' is one word for it. 'Foolish' is another." Luna smiles at Spitfire. "I... I am ready to stop being foolish. I am ready to finally date."
The Pegasus's grin widens. "Well, if I come across any single mares, I'll let you know~"
The princess rolls her eyes, but continues to smile. "Captain Spitfire, will you do me the honor of being my first date?"
"I'd be happy to," Spitfire smirks. "After all, if our date goes awful, you won't have anything to compare it to~"
Luna chuckles. "If things go poorly, it will likely be thanks to my lack of experience. I apologize in advance for how awkward I am sure to be."
"Aww, don't apologize for something that hasn't even happened yet." The Pegasus frowns. "I know you're the guilty type, but jeez.
"Here's one way we can make tonight less awkward. Let's drop the titles, at least while we're alone. No 'Princess' or 'Captain.' Tonight, we're just Luna and Spitfire, okay?"
"O... Okay, Spitfire," the princess replies. "Also, you... want to have our first date now? So soon? I thought I might have a few days to prepare for --"
Spitfire waves a hoof. "All you need is you. And those bath salts. What do you say we go try them out in the hot tub?"
Luna's eyes widen. "Y-you want to get into a hot tub... together?"
"Yeah! There's more than enough room for the two of us. Plus, my wings're still killing me after flying to Canterlot and back yesterday." The Pegasus stretches out her wings. "C'mon, let's go!"
The princess opens her mouth to reply, but Spitfire's already flying back to headquarters. Luna sighs and follows her.
The mares return to Spitfire's office, where she puts the basket of bath salts on her back. Then they go down to the basement, which contains a pool and a hot tub.
"Good. Nopony else is here." The Pegasus turns on the jets and pours some bath salts into the water, which starts to foam and fizz.
Spitfire removes her drill sergeant uniform and jumps into the bubbly, turbulent water. She settles into a corner of the tub, laying her forelegs on the floor.

Blushing, Luna walks over, slips into the water, and sits in the corner opposite Spitfire.

Once her orgasm ebbs, Luna stops flailing and becomes still, apart from her labored breathing. Spitfire lies down next to the princess.
"So... guess you didn't hate it~?" The Pegasus smirks.
Luna continues panting. "Ha... ah... ah... wh-what... wh-what just happened...?"
Spitfire chuckles. "I'll explain later, when we have 'the talk.' Better a few thousand years late than never."
The princess inclines her head towards the Pegasus. "Is... is 'the talk'... the time when we ask each other... whether we are fillyfriends...?"
"Nah, that's a different talk. But we can have that one right now." Spitfire smiles and gazes into Luna's eyes. "Are you my fillyfriend?"
The princess blushes hard. "I-if you will have me..."
The Pegasus smirks and holds a hoof up to her chin. "Gee, I'll have to think about that... I've never dated an older mare before~"
Luna rolls her eyes, but grins. "And I have never dated a whippersnapper like you, but I suppose that I can make an exception."
Spitfire snickers. "Then I guess we're fillyfriends~ Heh, I can't wait to see the look on my teammates' faces when I tell them I'm dating a princess!"
Luna giggles. "And I cannot wait to see the look on my sister's face when I tell her that I am dating, period."
"Careful. She might think you've been replaced with a Changeling." The Pegasus winks.
Luna laughs. Spitfire grins, scoots closer, wraps a foreleg around the princess's shoulder, and presses her nose against Luna's. The two mares lie there, saying nothing, just nuzzling and snuggling each other.
Hours later, Spitfire looks at the clock on the wall. "Oh, spit, it's almost dawn. I've gotta get ready for morning drills."
She stands up, walks over to her uniform, and puts it on. Meanwhile, Luna blushes and gets onto her hooves. "I-I am so sorry. I did not mean to keep you up all night."
"Aww, it's fine. I've pulled plenty of all-nighters before," Spitfire smirks. "And I've got the feeling that I'll be pulling a lot more now that I've got a nocturnal fillyfriend~"
The princess blushes harder. "I-I usually sleep through the day, but I would be happy to stay up late or wake up early for you."
"I'm sure we'll figure something out. After all, we've got plenty of time... even though I'm not an Alicorn." Spitfire winks.
Luna smiles and rolls her eyes. "With jokes like that, both of our lives will feel like an eternity."
The Pegasus trots up to the princess, smooches her lips, and spanks her flank. "Meet me by the rainbow waterfall at dusk. That's an order."
Luna bites her lower lip. "Y-yes, ma'am."
The princess watches Spitfire walk upstairs. Then Luna teleports to her bedchamber.
She looks at the stormcloud in a bottle. She smiles, walks over to her bed, and gets under the covers.
Before drifting off to sleep, she takes a pillow in her forelegs and holds it against her torso.
"I need you..." she whispers.
