Twilight and her friends all sat together in the reception hall of Canterlot Castle. They were celebrating the wedding of Cadence and Shining Armor, a wedding that would have never happened had Twilight not investigated and followed her gut instinct. However, the wedding wasn't the only subject that had been plaguing the unicorn's mind. She had been debating for months now how she wanted to tell her best friend and longtime crush, Rainbow Dash, that she had feelings for her. Twilight had finally chosen the wedding so the scene would already hold a touch of romance, as well as a friendly atmosphere.
But would Rainbow say yes?
Twilight sipped her drink nervously, she was sitting by Cadence, who was saying something about her gratefulness for the rescue from the Caves, though the unicorn wasn't paying much attention, as her eyes and thoughts were on a certain rainbow-maned pegasus across the room. A hopeless sigh escaped her lips as she reluctantly tore her gaze away from the pegasus to look down at the table, "Are you okay, Twilight?" She heard Cadence ask, but only managed a shrug of a reply in return, her gaze still fixed to the table, "Are you still thinking about your crush on Rainbow Dash?" This statement made Twilight look up at her new sister-in-law in shock and surprise.
"How...how did you-"
"Well, I am the Princess of Love, I do have a knack for these things you know. Honestly, just go talk to her, I have a feeling she likes you too and is just too stubborn and proud to admit it."
"You think so?"
"I guess you'll have to talk to her to find out," Cadence replied, winking. The action made Twilight blush, but nod as she stood from her seat and made her way over to her small group of friends. As Twilight approached them, a few nervous beads of sweat trickling down her face, 'Come on Twilight, she's your best friend, and you know she's into mares, you have a chance, and no matter what, our friendship won't be destroyed...' The unicorn thought.
"Well, they there Twilight! Havin' fun?" Applejack asked, the first to notice her friend's approach.
"Yeah, Cadence and I are already getting closer. Just like when I was a filly! I'm so happy my brother chose to be with her!" Twilight replied with a smile.
"I'm so happy for you and your family Twilight," Fluttershy commented, a warm smile on her face.
"Agreed, romance is definitely in the air," Rarity giggled, then tensed when she felt a hoof wrap around her. She relaxed and smiled when she saw it was Applejack. She instantly leaned into the embrace.
"Yeah yeah...romance, love, blah blah..." Rainbow deadpanned with a groan, "I'm not one for that sappy stuff, it's stupid in my opinion," Fluttershy gasped at this, for she was the only one who knew about Twilight's crush on the brash pegasus, and Rainbow soon caught the eye of the hurt look her unicorn friend held, "Not that I'm not happy for your brother of course!" Unfortunately, that was not the reason Twilight was hurt. Tears began to run down her face.
"E...excuse me f-for a moment...please..." The lavender unicorn whispered, before running from the reception hall, and after a trip to the kitchen, went to the only place she knew could comfort her: The Canterlot Castle Library.
"What was that about?" Rainbow asked, confused as she watched the unicorn runoff.
"Um...well Rainbow...Twilight...likes you..."
"Well, she is my best friend..."
"No...she...she loves you, Rainbow. She's been crushing on you for nearly three years now...She made me swear not to tell you, but I think now she'll be too upset to tell you, given your recent.." Fluttershy coughed, "comment..." Rainbow's eyes widened as she put the pieces together.
"Where do you think she went?" Rainbow asked, fear caught in her eyes.
"Probably the library," Fluttershy replied.
"Thanks, Fluttershy!" Rainbow exclaimed before flying off quickly to find her friend.
"Rainbow likes Twilight back," Applejack deadpanned with a smirk.
"How do you know?" Pinkie asked.
"She told me, I have a feeling she only said that because she thought she had no chance with Twilight."
"Wow..." The others said, rolling their eyes or facehoofing.
"I hope that they sort this out. I hate seeing any of my friends upset!" Pinkie exclaimed sadness in her bubbly blue eyes.
"Agreed..." Rarity added, as they all looked in the direction Rainbow and Twilight had gone.
Tears of pain and sadness ran down Twilight's face as a steel blade scrapped her wrists. Blood stained ber fur and the floor beneath her, but at the moment, she couldn't care less. She knew cutting herself probably wasn't the best option of coping, but she felt like it would release her pain somehow, give her something other than her broken heart to focus on.
As she tore her skin open, she stared at book gripped in her magic. It was called 'The Steps to Healing [A Broken Heart]' though she wasn't really reading it, her mind stuck on the blade against her forehooves.
Suddenly, the library door opened, and Twilight froze, "Twilight? Are you in her-" Rainbow too froze in place when she saw what her friend was doing, "Twi!" She rushed over and took the knife from the unicorn's hoof, tossing it to the side, "Why would you..." Rainbow felt herself tear up as she saw the cover of the book she held, and the look of pain and shame wrote on the other mare's face,"...You...you really love me...don't you...?" Twilight looked at the pegasus with surprise, "Fluttershy told me...look, let's get you bandaged up, then we'll talk. Okay?" Twilight only nodded, and Rainbow pulled her friend into her arms and carried her to the bathroom.
Once they got there, she quickly found some bandages and began to clean and bandage Twilight's cut hoof, all while she spoke, "There's a reason I said what I did you know..." Twilight didn't reply, only continued to look down at the floor. Rainbow took that as a chance to continue, "It's because I didn't think I could ever have what your brother has."
Twilight looked up with interest, before flinching as Rainbow taped the bandages down to her hoof, "R...really...?" She asked, her voice slightly hoarse, and broken sounding.
"Yeah...truth be told, Twilight...I love you too..."
Twilight's eyes widened, then narrowed, "Are you just pitying me because of my leg?"
Rainbow gasped, "Twilight, no! Look, Fluttershy told me everything, and you can ask Applejack, I've had a crush on you for years now too, I guess I was just too scared to tell you, just like you were too nervous to tell me it seems," Rainbow blushed, "So...how about it? How about we have a date and see where it goes?"
"Really?" Twilight looked like she wanted to be happy, but something seemed to be holding her back.
Rainbow saw this and decided to really prove how she felt, "I love you, Twilight Sparkle," Rainbow stated, placing a hoof to her face and pulling her into a gentle kiss, which Twilight happily returned. Once Rainbow broke the kiss, she added, "Why don't we both stay at the library tonight, talk more about us and that cutting of yours. Okay?"
Twilight nodded before whispering, "I love you too..."
Rainbow and Twilight approached their friends again, the pegasi's wing draped firmly around her new marefriend,"I see it went well?" Rarity asked, a hopeful smile on her face.
"Well..we had a few...complications, but yes, we are a couple now," Rainbow replied, a smile on her face which held both sadness and joy.
"Complications?" Pinkie asked. Rainbow used her eyes and gestured toward Twilight's leg. Once they released what their friend had done, the girls' eyes widened in fear. Twilight only looked away and leaned further into Rainbow's embrace.
"Well, I'm certainly happy for you two," Rarity said, ending a seemingly endless moment of silence.
"I think we all are, darlin'," Applejack added, getting a nod from Pinkie and Fluttershy.
For the rest of the wedding, Rainbow kept her hoof or wing around her new marefriend and didn't dare take her eyes off her. She knew Twilight hadn't been attempting to really kill herself, but at the same time, she was afraid she'd have lost the unicorn had she not gone after her.
Once they made it back to the library, the two slipped off their dresses and carelessly tossed them to the floor before crawling into bed, Rainbow's wing around her marefriend, "Why did you cut yourself?" Rainbow asked once they got comfortable.
"I...I wanted the pain to be somewhere other than my heart...I promise I wasn't trying to commit-...you know..."
"I know, Twily. I promise I won't be going anywhere anytime soon. I'll always be by your side, so you have no reason to do that again," Twilight smiled for the first time that night as she buried her face in her marefriend's rainbow mane.
"Thank you...I love you, Dashie..."
"I love you too, Twi. Goodnight..." She whispered as she planted a light kiss on the unicorn's forehead, before the new couple drifted off to sleep, locked in a loving embrace.
