Chapter 1
The Mare Tales Are Not Entirely True...
The Crystal Caverns. It was here I would live and here I would die. My home. Although there was no leaving, life wasn't that bad. I lived with my precious sister Luna, my mother, SolarFlare, and my father, Ebony, who was rarely home. He is the only one who ever leaves to find us food and water.
The Caverns are like a palace. Hundreds of rooms and hundreds of places to get lost. It's beautiful and hidden by a magical spell so we won't be found. I never really understood why we must stay in side but mother always says it is too dangerous for us. Something about nopony liking us Alicorns...
"Tia. Hey, Tia. Hey. Tia. TIA!"
"What ridiculous game do you want me to play now?" I poked my head up from the book of Pony Legends and Myths I was pouring over.
"Can we play Dark Mare Attack?" Luna look up at me with big, begging eyes.
"Okay, but only for a while. I wanna finish this chapter," I got up from the rock I was sitting on and began to growl. "Rawr! I am the Dark Mare! I have come to capture Luna!" I rumbled in my best scary voice.
Luna squeaked a little in false fear and dove behind a rock to hide.
"Hm, where is the little Luna? I need her for my dinner!" I said, looking behind every little rock in the room. "Oh Luna! Luna!" Quietly I crept up on the rock she was hiding behind and popped out. "BOO!"
Luna screamed and bolted out of the room. I followed her close behind.
"I want Luna for dinner!"
Luna screamed again and flew as fat as her tiny wings could carry her to the door.
"Girls! That is enough. No more screaming and NO leaving the Caverns understand Luna?" Like the sun after a storm, mom was there to ruin my fun.
"But mom, Tia chased me!" Whined Luna yet again pulling off the innocence look.
"Celestia, you should be more careful. And both of you, you know how many time I have told you to stay away from the door. It is much too dangerous for Alicorns to leave. They'd kill us if they saw us. Anyway, off to bed."
There is no arguing with mom. A full grown manticore would shrink in fear at the sight of her fire red mane and proud stature.
Luna and I trotted off to the bathroom to get ready for bed. Luna wore a grin she always had when she got the nice end of mom. The grin that I never got the chance to wear. I fluttered up to the cabinet dad made to get some of the toothpaste.
"So what do you think is out there?" whispered Luna as she put some toothpaste on her brush.
"Outside?"
"Yeah. Mom won't ever let us leave. I wonder why."
"According to my books, long ago it was a beautiful land filled with unicorns, pegasai, earth ponies, and even alicorns. Maybe it's still that way,"
"But without us..."
"But without us." The sentence couldn't stop playing in my head. There could be something beautiful and wonderful outside of this prison. "Let's get into bed Luna,"
She followed me into the bedroom she and I shared. I slipped into the bed of grasses and waited for mother to come and tuck us in. Opposite of me lay Luna, who was staring at the ceiling, apparently lost in thought. Mother's bright hair lit up the room as she covered us up.
"Can you tell a story tonite?" Luna whispered. “About the outside?”
"I guess." she said while settling down next to Luna. "Long ago, when the world was bright and new, ponies, pegasai, unicorns, and alicorns got along. They played together in the sun and harmony existed throughout the land. The gazed at the stars and moon when night settled. Everypony laughed and played together but three alicorns in particular loved to play all day and all night. One had a mane as bright as the sun. One had a coat as dark as the night. And the last one was as beautiful as the valley of flowers.
One night they went out to play and they were told to be back by midnight. But the three were not very careful and as the midnight moon rose, an evil curse overtook the beautiful one. Her soul became buried within an evil spirit who wanted to destroy all of pony kind. The others didn't know what to do. They ran for help but nopony was awake. The Dark Mare would soon harm the innocent ponies. She was moving fast towards the town, her sights set on a small filly. The little filly screamed.
Ponies from all over awoke to the sight of a Dark Mare standing over a filly. Nopony knew what to do. They were all to afraid to face her. But the other friends came up with a plan- an unfortunate one. The two Alicorns used a powerful spell that made the Dark Mare dissapear- and their friend.
Sad and frightened, the two alicorns fled. From then on whenever an alicorn appeared, the frightened ponies attack, afraid of another Dark Mare." Mother buried her muzzle in her mane for a few moments. "And that is why we must not leave."
"Mother, were you and dad the ones who banished the Dark Mare?" I whispered, almost hoping she wouldn't hear me.
She sat in silence for a moment, head bowed. Both Luna and I knew that was a yes.
"Lights out you two. Good night. I love you both,"
"Tia?" whispered Luna.
"Hm?"
"Can I sleep with you?"
I nodded and made room for the filly. Her warmblue fur cuddled close and made me feel safe. I wasn’t ever going to let go of my little Luna.
"Good night," I whispered
"I love you,"
"Love you too sis,"
