Stars Only Come Out At Night
“I think we should go this way!”
“Well, I think we should go this way!”
Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon bashed their foreheads together and growled at each other, neither one willing to give an inch of their burning pride. Behind them stood three concerned fillies, Applebloom, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle, who much preferred just picking a direction and getting it over with, but none of them wanted to get involved in the heated fight between the two temperamental foals.
“I have an idea!” Sweetie Belle shouted, raising her hoof. “What if we went one way, make a quick loop, and then go back and do the other way?”
“Are you kidding?!” Diamond Tiara snapped. “This is our last Nightmare Night, and I don't want to ruin it by taking the road down Old Man River's street.”
“At least we know what's down there!” Silver Spoon rebutted, smacking her forehead back onto Diamond Tiara's. “You have no idea what you're even going to find going that way!”
“You know what I won't find?” Diamond Tiara lifted her head higher than Silver Spoon's, walking forward with dominance and forcing the gray-maned filly to gradually step backwards. “Candy corn! Black licorice! Jelly beans! All of which you can find if you want to waste your time begging for candy from Twist's mom and dad!”
This year, the pressure was at an all-time high. Once foals reached a certain age, usually not long after earning their cutie marks, it would be looked down on for them to go knocking on houses, asking for candy, and this was the year that these five fillies were about to graduate. If they didn't get the best haul ever this year, it meant that they would never get the chance to fix their mistake. Thus, the quality versus quantity debate sprung up, leading to a heated argument between the two most spoiled foals in Ponyville.
“This way has WAY more houses!” Silver Spoon shouted. “Who in their right mind would go somewhere expecting to not get as much candy?”
“What good is having all that candy if none of it is worth eating?” Diamond retorted, causing the three girls behind her to grumble in frustration.
“If y'all can't make up yer mind, we ain't gon’ get any candy this year!” Applebloom complained.
“Or ever!” Scootaloo chimed in, adding her own dissatisfied tone. “Can't we just go down the safe road and get the same candy as every year?”
Diamond Tiara broke her view from Silver Spoon's, shooting a fiery glare at the other fillies and making them flinch in fear. “Fine!” Diamond Tiara exclaimed. “You all want to get tootsie rolls again, be my guest! I'll go by myself and get all the candy I want!”
“Wait! You don't have to go alone!” Sweetie Belle said in an attempt to stop the pink foal, but her patience had already been brought to its limit, leaving the other ponies to take the safe road without her. She would show them. She would come back with the best treats in the entire history of Nightmare Night!
Her plan was simple: go up the Hollyhoof Hills, knock on every door whether their porchlight was on or not, and get out of there the second their hoof let go of their candy bar. The fact of the matter was, Silver Spoon was right. This way had far fewer houses than the road they normally took, but Diamond Tiara had noticed that the kids who went this way had much more confidence than the kids going the safe route. They knew something she didn't, and she was going to find out what that was.
When she knocked on the first door, she was greeted by an older stallion whom she didn't recognize. ‘This is good!’ she thought to herself. ‘If he doesn't know who I am, it'll mean less chitchat! I'll be able to hit twice as many houses as those loser ponies!’ Then, just as she expected, two hay bars fell into her bag, the most coveted candy of Nightmare Night!
“Yes!” Diamond Tiara exclaimed before realizing how impolite she was being. “Oh, I mean, thank you, sir! Happy Nightmare Night!”
The pink foal smiled and waved happily as she began walking away, but as soon as his door was closed, she sprinted to the next doorstep, ready for another haul of rare candies. Now, without four other ponies slowing her down, she could move at triple her normal pace, which only became faster when kids at the next house over did the courtesy of knocking for her, giving her time to catch up while cutting the time it took for ponies to answer their doors. Plus, she was getting way better treats than she ever had in the past! This was becoming the best Nightmare Night ever!
As she made her way through the neighborhood, though, more and more houses were beginning to turn out their lights, and kids were beginning to disappear one after the other. Even though Diamond Tiara's excitement was at an all-time high, even though she was in the zone like some kind of sugar-addicted panhandler, the night was coming to an end. As she looked up and down the street and saw that there were no foals left, she realized that her final Nightmare Night was over.
“No…” she said through gritted teeth as she knocked on her fourth straight door with no answer. Even after looking at her bag and seeing more candy than ever before, she wasn't ready to pull the curtain on this holiday forever. “I'm not finished yet! Hey! Answer the door, will you?!”
Diamond Tiara then began yelling, pounding on the door in front of her with all her might. She wasn't about to leave this pony's doorstep until somepony answered her, and luckily for her, it wasn't long until the door creaked open, revealing a young mare with a concerned look that actually made the pink foal feel embarrassed.
“Yes?” the mare asked hesitantly.
“Nightmare Night! What a fright! Give me something sweet to bite!”
Unsurprisingly, the mare frowned with a sigh. “I'm sorry, child,” she said with genuine sadness. “I've already given out all the candy I had.”
“Are you kidding me?! How much candy did you even have?!”
Despite the reaction she was expecting, the mare did not get angry or try justifying herself any further. Instead, she opened her door up further and said, “If you want, you can come inside and I'll see if I have anything else.”
Diamond Tiara stepped back with an eyebrow raised. “Wait, you'd seriously let me have food from out of your kitchen?”
“Well, I doubt you'd want any apples, but I can at least check to see if I have any fudge bars. It'd probably be best if I didn't have those nearby anyway. Come on in! I'm sure I can find something worth taking home.”
Again, Diamond Tiara was left feeling ashamed and embarrassed at the surprising generosity from the mare, especially when she had acted so entitled and rude just moments before. Still, though, without looking for a reason to reject her kindness any further, she entered into her house and closed the door behind her, gawking in awe at the beautiful home she lived in.
“You live here?!”
“Well, it's one of my homes,” the mare said as she walked towards her kitchen. “Why don't you have a seat on the couch? I'll be right back after I find something.”
“You know what? I don't really need anything! I'm sorry about the way I acted.”
The mare looked back and giggled. “Well, you're more than welcome to take off if you want, but you'd be the first filly I've ever met to turn down free candy.”
“Do you give out free candy to a lot of fillies?” the foal asked, taking a seat on the mare's expensive leather couch. The grown pony, however, froze in her tracks, trying to smile awkwardly through her obvious discomfort.
“Heh heh. Yeah, something like that. *Ahem!* Which do you prefer? Something with hay or something with chocolate?”
“Uh… Either one works for me. Thanks.”
The mare smiled and disappeared into her kitchen for a few moments, but after the sound of a cabinet closing, she walked back into the living room with a pack of small custards in her mouth. “I really should get rid of these things,” she said after plopping them onto the coffee table in front of them. “It may not be candy, but it should definitely satisfy that sweet tooth of yours.”
“And you're just OK with me taking these?”
“Well, if you feel that guilty about it, we can eat them together. Does that work for you?”
“Sure,” Diamond Tiara said, awkwardly opening the bag and taking a bite out of one of the custards. The taste was exquisite, and she could tell that these weren't just regular treats you could get at the local market. Something this rich in taste had to be imported, which begged the question again just how much money this pony made. “You said… this was one of your houses?”
“Yeah,” the mare replied, taking a bite out of her own treat and moaning with pleasure. “I'm originally from Manehattan, but I have houses there, here, one in Canterlot and a beach house in Las Pegasus. I travel a lot, so it's nice to have somewhere to settle down when I'm not too busy.”
The more the mare spoke, however, the more the filly began to notice something familiar about her. “Have we… met somewhere before?”
“Maybe. I meet all kinds of ponies, especially school ponies. By the way, aren't you gonna tell me what you're supposed to be dressed up as?”
Looking down, Diamond Tiara noticed that she was still wearing her Nightmare Night costume, complete with a short skirt, a colorful top and her mane done up into pigtails. “Yeah. I'm supposed to be a cheerleader. I thought it would look cute, but I look kinda dumb. Good thing this is my last Nightmare Night.”
The mare beside her giggled, reaching down again for another custard. “I think you look great, but I guess this explains why you're so adamant about getting as much candy as you can.”
“Yeah… Again, I'm really sorry about that, miss!”
“Please! Miss is my mother's name. Call me Rara.”
Suddenly, all the pieces were beginning to come together: the expensive home, the imported custards, all the traveling she did. “Wait a second! Are you…”
“Maybe,” the mare replied with a seductive grin. “Am I?”
“You're Countess Coloratura!! Oh, my Celestia! I can't believe it! I'm in your house, and I'm eating your food, and you're right here next to me, and--”
“Hold your dragons, there!” Coloratura said with a giggle, silencing the filly's mouth with her hoof. “I'm just a regular pony just like you are. Like I said, just Rara works fine.”
“You are not just a regular pony!”
“You're right.” With another grin, Rara slouched back into her seat, laying her head back onto the armrest while dropping another custard into her mouth. “I'm a pony with an amazing taste for junk food. That's pretty special, right?”
Despite her celebrity status, this mare was acting completely different than Diamond Tiara had expected. In fact, it was Diamond Tiara who was acting like the world revolved around her desires, but in reality, she was really a nopony who had been invited into the home of a somepony! Not just any somepony, either! Countess Coloratura was the biggest pop star in all of Equestria, yet she acted the same as Applebloom's sister.
“So!” Rara said, sitting back up in her seat. “Are you going to tell me your name?”
“Me? Oh! Right! I'm uh… M-my name is Diamond Tiara.”
“That's a cute name! Would it be alright if I called you ‘DT’?”
Diamond Tiara's cheeks blushed. “Y-yeah! That would be fine!”
Even though Coloratura was trying to act like a normal pony, though, she couldn't help but notice how weird the filly was acting towards her, making her feel like she was doing something weird or inappropriate. “Listen,” Rara said. “You don't have to stay here if you don't want. You're totally free to take the rest of these and go back to knocking on doors. I promise I won't be offended.”
“What?! I don't want to go! You're not kicking me out, are you?”
“Hmm… How about this? I'll let you stay, but you have to promise not to treat me any different than anypony else you normally hang out with. Deal?”
Suddenly, all the butterflies in Diamond Tiara's stomach flew away, leaving just the two of them to be themselves. Just two regular ponies. “Deal!” the filly replied, shaking hooves with her new friend.
“So do you normally do Nightmare Night by yourself?”
“Oh… uh… No, this is my first time doing it alone.” The pink foal had completely forgotten her friends whom she had left behind, and upon remembering, she finally realized how immature she had acted towards them. Suddenly, though, she noticed that she was acting weird again and quickly changed her demeanor before she was kicked out of the house. “I got into a fight with a couple of my friends. They wanted to get candy where they always go, but since this is my last Nightmare Night, I just wanted…”
“An adventure?”
“Yes! Finally somepony who isn't boring! I mean, it's not like they'll ever get this chance again!”
“You know what? I don't think you made the wrong decision, and no, it's not just because you got to meet me. This may be the last time you get to go house to house and get lots of free candy, but this isn't your last Nightmare Night.”
Diamond Tiara raised an eyebrow. “Uhhh, what's the point of Nightmare Night without candy?”
Rara giggled again, giving her another one of her smirks. “Being with your friends.”
“Oh…” Diamond Tiara's ears fell, realizing again that she was doing the exact opposite. “So then why aren't you with friends right now?”
“Probably because it's 11 o'clock at night.”
“Oh, right. I forgot.”
“But also because sometimes not having any friends around is the best excuse to make new friends.” As Diamond Tiara looked up at Rara, she couldn't help but smile at her new friend. “I am a little worried, though, DT. Aren't your parents worried sick right now?”
“No,” Diamond Tiara scoffed. “They're off at Pinkie Pie's first annual Up-All-Nightmare-Night Party in Canterlot. They think I'm with my friends right now. Oh, not that you're not my friend! They just think--”
“I get it,” Coloratura said, smiling again, only this time a little less genuinely. “They think you're with friends your own age. You know, sometimes I wish I could give up everything to go back in time and be a filly again.”
The pink filly couldn't help but furrow her eyebrows. “Are you KIDDING me?! You're rich and successful and beautiful!”
“But at what cost?!” Even though Rara was raising her voice, she couldn't help but blush at that last part from Diamond Tiara. “The best part of my job is getting to spend time with school children, but it also is the hardest part. If I lose a fan, I can always make another one. If one of my songs flops, I can always make one better, but youth is something that I can never get back, no matter how hard I work.”
“What's so great about being young anyway?”
Rara shot her a smarmy smile. “I would get free candy on Nightmare Night, for one. Plus… I guess life is just easier when you're a filly.”
“Easy?” Diamond Tiara scoffed. “You think being the daughter of two successful business ponies is easy? Do you not think I deal with any pressure, just because I'm not some important pop star? I always have to be the one on top all the time, and sometimes…” Diamond Tiara began to trail off, fighting back tears as they threatened to pour out of her eyes. “Sometimes I wish I could just hurry up and be an adult. Maybe then I wouldn't have to worry so much on Nightmare Night.”
Without having any real ideas on what to say, Coloratura grabbed the filly by the waist and brought her into a warm hug, patting her on the back the way that her mother never would, and at that moment, Diamond Tiara began to cry. “I'm sorry, DT. I didn't mean to make you feel bad.”
“No, you're fine,” Diamond Tiara said, wiping away her tears. “I'm sorry for that.”
With the conversation derailed and leaving an awkward aura in the room, Coloratura looked down at the bag of custards and smiled. “Just one more left! Wanna share it?”
“Sure,” the filly replied, expecting her to tear the pastry in half. As she pulled the custard out of the bag, though, Rara bit down on one end of the pastry, closed her eyes and leaned forward for Diamond Tiara to bite down on the other half… which she didn't do. “Uhh… What are you doing?”
Coloratura's eyes went wide, biting off her half of the custard and pulling the rest away with her hoof. “Nothing!” she said as her whole face turned red. “Sorry! I guess I didn't bite hard enough. H-here! You can have the rest if you wan--”
“Oh, my Celestia! Were you trying to kiss me?”
“No! I swear, I--”
Even though she was expecting the filly to be offended, angry or even frightened, once she finally grew enough courage to look Diamond Tiara in the eyes, she saw that the filly was laughing, holding onto her gut. “That has got to be the lamest excuse to kiss someone I've ever seen!”
“Yeah! Heh heh.” Coloratura rubbed the back of her neck while her face grew even redder. Hopefully she could play this off like it was all just one big misunderstanding.
“I mean, I guess if you're into fillies, that is probably the easiest way to do it.”
“Huh?! I never s-said I was into fillies!”
“Oh, come on,” Diamond Tiara said, resting her cheek against her hoof while she smiled coyly. “It's been written all over your face ever since you invited me in. I mean, getting me into your house just to give me free snacks? Having me sit on your couch while we talk? The best part of your job is being near school ponies? Come on. You're not fooling anypony.”
Again, Coloratura's face turned red, making her look away from the filly's smug grin. “You won't tell anypony, will you?”
“You admitted it! Ha! I literally can't believe it!”
“OK! I get it!” By this point, the mare was basically trying to duck beneath her shoulders and melt onto the floor in embarrassment. “Maybe you should go.”
“Are you crazy? I'm having way too much fun right now! Besides, what are you gonna do once I leave? Are you still going to think about me? Are you going to picture me between your legs with my face in your crotch?”
Coloratura was now covering her face with her hooves. “Why are you doing this to me?”
“That really turns you on, doesn't it? You know, you sound like you want me to stop talking, but I bet deep inside, you want me to keep going. “No, YOU listen!” Diamond Tiara shouted, making Rara recoil in fear. “I wanted my first kiss to be with somepony special, NOT with somepony who's going to ask me to leave right after doing it! So…” The pink filly trailed off, her eyes dancing around the room as she awkwardly looked for the right words to say what she wanted. “So are we going to do it again, or are you just going to make me leave?”

Diamond Tiara growled, causing Coloratura to abruptly end what she was saying. “You think that just because I'm a filly, I don't know what I'm doing? Well, I'm obviously not going to learn by not doing anything, so kiss me!”

Before Rara had any time to react, Diamond Tiara brought her hoof around her head and pulled the two of them in to kiss again. Opening her eyes in shock, she noticed that Coloratura was probably just acting off of impulse at this point, and not wanting to make things awkward, the filly joined in, dancing her tongue across the mare's.
