Day One: The Outside World

The warm summer breeze hits the Earth Pony as he stands on the precipice of freedom, breaking from the thresholds of oppression and leaving the scars of the past behind him.

His legs quivered under his weight, wanting nothing more than the sweet relief of rest, but the teen knew that this was the first of many arduous steps to take, and if he wanted to seize those very steps, he can’t afford the luxury to rest. So, with a bag on his shoulder and a sword at his side, he began top venture farther away from the cave and farther away from the pain to start a new life.

After venturing for a while, the Earth Pony had made his place on top of a small hill that was big enough to give him a great view of the world beyond him. He could make out a what he could only assume was a city with a large spire in the what he assumed was the center of the city. The fire emitted smoke like it was some kind of dragon, and a lot of it too, more than enough to cover a large portion of the sky.

To his right was what he could only infer was a train yard. Word of this train yard had caught his ear while in his hometown, he had heard from the TYGERS that the place was crawling with monsters that could tear a pony in half with just its claw. But despite the place seemingly crawling with monsters, he caught one of the train flashing its headlight as if it were on. In fact, that same train was emitting smoke too, as if coal was being burned. And that’s when he saw them.

A group of ponies and griffon’s working to get the train working, but what the teen saw amongst them that told him that he’d be safer if he stayed away from them: one of the gryphon’s had a large distended gut, no doubt holding some prey inside. That was one place he didn’t want to visit anytime soon.

To his far left was a broken down building to which he noted that it may have been a hospital at one point in time, the large red cross utop was probably the biggest clue.

And at the bottom of the hill was a large truck which he noted bared resemblance to a moving truck of some kind. Seeing as the truck may have been the best bet of a place for rest since it was the smallest thing and left much less room for any surprise attacks. So with a firm nod, the kid began trucking down the hill towards the moving vehicle.

Arriving at the base of the hill, the Earth Pony surveyed the truck which was littered with holes that made it obvious that this thing was nothing new. The paint, which the teen noted was black, was now a sickly dust brown, having been caked in dust so resilient that it wouldn't erase with the ginger-head just running his finger across, clearly this thing has been here a long time.

When the grey-coated colt made it to the front of the truck, he saw a silhouette of a body, but he couldn’t distinguish it’s gender or anything because the dust stood in his way.

Reaching out for the door of the truck, the colt tries tugging at it, but it was clearly jammed, and after a few more tugs, he realized that simply pulling on it would not yield fruit. So he did the next best thing that swam into his mind.

Stepping back, the colt lifts his foot and in a thrust and a bang of metal, the colt’s foot had kissed the door. But he didn’t cease at the first kick, no, he sent another kick, then another kick, then another kick, and a few more kicks later and the teen spotted a small dent forming at the point of the door where it would open.

Upon his eyes meeting that small crack, the Earth Pony ceased his kicking and set his bag down, opening it to retrieve a large hunting knife which was buried under some strange supplies: a journal, lighter fluid, matches, salt, a flare, and a pistol with some clips.

Unsheathing his hunting knife, the colt turns his attention back to the door of the truck.

A deep breath made itself apparent, leaving his lungs as he lunges at the door, the knife hinges itself into the crack. And with a heave and pull and a heave and pull and a heave and pull, the colt tried his very best to lodge this door open. Any other normal knife by this point probably would have shattered due to how hard the teen was pulling and how jammed the door was, but this knife was shown to be more resilient than the door as in one last heave and pull, the door opened and the knife was undamaged.

But what wasn’t undamaged was the body that fell out of the truck the moment the door opened. Upon inspection of the body, the colt realized that the body was that of a Pegasus stallion, and the body betrayed his hopes of it being a skeleton as it was evident that the stallion was freshly dead, and the cause of death wasn’t difficult to spot either as the slit in his throat left no room for debate.

Despite his original wish for the the body to be a skeleton, the colt inspected the dead body, and more specifically the cut in his throat. The stallion seemed to be wearing some tough lightweight tactical body armor, and the muscles under the armor told the Earth Pony that the armored dead soldier was a formidable warrior, but things really got strange when he inspected the cut in his throat.

When he saw the cut in the stallion’s throat, he realized that this was no normal slit in the throat like what he saw the people back at his hometown where it was small but noticeable, no, whatever did this cut his neck so badly, that the teen could see the soldier’s spine. The sight alone made him want to throw up, but actually feeling it brought whatever lunch he had in his stomach up his throat, making him spit it out. Figuring he was done with inspecting the body, the Earth Pony stood up, put his knife back into its sheath and returning it to its bed in his bag before entering the truck and was met with another body, this one though looked to have been dead for 3 weeks as the blood had dried, while the stallion’s blood was in that weird state between dry and moist.

The new body was a mare, a Unicorn at that, this one much less dressed, looking like she was a stripper, ultimately looking completely different from the stallion. But what the two dead ponies had in common was a large slit in the throat deep enough that you could see the spine if you lift the head back enough.

The whole situation just boggled his mind, because the cause of the two ponies death was clear, but how they died wasn’t. It was obvious the two ponies didn’t kill each other as one was dead far longer than the other one, but there weren’t any signs of any other being visiting this truck. But the strangest thing to come was the names written in blood on the windshields: Crimson Bull and Vapor Pipe, no doubt belonging to the murderers. But the way it was written showed that it needed to be written by an very intelligent being, but as stated before, no other being was in this truck.

Then it all hit him at once: the two unalike bodies, the lack of another being for weeks, and the intelligent writing of the blood all pointed to one thing: spirit. But was it a vengeful spirit or a spirit seeking retribution, he couldn’t tell without more history.

So he immediately starts rummaging through the truck to find anything about the history of the vehicle, but all he saw was nothing but a key that rested in the glove department along with some documents.

With the key and documents in tow, the Earth Pony hopped out of the truck and ventured to the back of the truck and saw that it was locked by well… a lock. He puts the key into the keyhole, and it opens up, miraculously.

Once he was inside the truck, he wasted no time in looking in the truck for anything in particular, but more specifically, he was looking for any bodies.

The ginger-head Earth Pony would have given up on looking for the body when a strong sent hit his nose, a stench so horrid and rancid, that it could only be described as a rotting body. Now with a sent to follow, the ginger-head took no longer than a minute to find the body, which was a small little filly, by far the oldest of the corpse in terms of how long it was dead for.

Having a hunch that this was the body of the vengeful spirit, he took the body outside of the truck and laid the body down. Putting his bag down and taking out the gasoline, the salt, and matches.

First he salts the body, sprinkling the salt over the skeleton lightly as to not waste it as he had know idea if he’d come across somebody who would be willing to give him some more salt. Then he slowly drizzles the gasoline overtop the body, and for the last bit, he drops a lit match onto the body, bursting into flames.

During the cremation of the skeleton, the kid sat down and began reading the documents, and apparently, it was papers about a moving deal, and the ones in on the deal was a mother, a father, and a daughter: Pistol Shot, Nimble Blade, and Lily Rose. Lily Rose no doubt being the body that was burning in flames, but where were the parents? Where could they have gone? And where was the driver of the truck? It doesn’t seem likely that the driver would leave a truck that seemed to have been in good health.

Well maybe he’d find more answers tucked away in that hospital, it couldn’t have been more than a few miles away. Deciding that the hospital would yield some helpful results, he puts the documents into his bag, digging for something.

Unfortunately, an expedition into the hospital had to be put on hold as the unmistakable sound of a gun loading rung throughout the wasteland.

“Get up now!” A deep stallion like voice commanded.

The ginger-head stood up before turning to the voice, and to his relief, the ponies in front of him was not the TYGER guards, but relief quickly gave way to worry as he realized that the ponies were the ones from the train yard, and the gryphon leader, still with a pretty sizable gut, stood in the middle.

“Well well well, what do we have here?” The leader questions, walking closer to the Earth Pony, “What’re you doing here? Looking for your mama?” He taunts.

The ginger-head shakes his head, “Like it concerns you.” He spits.

The gryphon chuckles deviously, right before a rock hard punch made contact with the Earth Pony’s gut, making him recoil but not fall to the ground, “Ahh, we got bit of smart-ass here.” The gryphon remarks, “And I bet you’re the one who jammed that door open and killed the soldier and the stripper.” He guesses.

The Earth Pony shakes his head, “Take a good look at both the bodies, one of them obviously had been dead for weeks and the other was killed maybe a day or two ago.” He corrects.

The gryphon shrugs, “I guess you’re right, but I was never a detective person myself.” He admits, “I’m more of a eating guy, and you, my dude, look like a great meal.” he adds, patting his gut, “I just like to know the name of my prey before I turn them into ass-fat.” He finishes.

The ginger-head smiles, “Link, Ginger Link.”
