“Come on!” The others ran up behind me as we reached the farm store, and I broke open the back door. We got in, and Braeburn ran over to the tractors. Mac is doing the same quickly as Flash, and I held the door shut. I could feel my feet getting pushed back, and the door was opening,
“Get ready to move!”
I looked back as an engine roared. Burn was on a tractor which thankfully had gas. Mac ran back over and helped us close the door. Burn lowered the bucket as he drove over. Mac and Flash jumped to the side, and I jumped into the bucket once he was close enough. He forced the door shut then dropped two side legs keeping the tractor in place. I sighed as I sat down on the top of the bucket and rubbed my face as I looked at the door. “Fuck! Brase what the hell were you thinking!?” I yelled at the older man as he huffed and looked at me.
“Well sorry, I didn’t think firing at one that far away would draw that many in!”
I sighed and nodded as I rubbed my eyes. “Next time we go outside of these doors silent weapons only. And Brase if you shoot one more dead without me saying so I will knock you out again!” He spat on the ground and nodded as he looked at me.
“Alright, I know I fucked up but I’m used to just doing this alone.”
I sighed and nodded as I got off the bucket. “Okay, okay. I’m sorry, I just wasn’t ready for that shot. I don’t think any of us were ready.” I pulled a hatchet off my side and my flashlight. “Alright, Brase, Mac, and Rainbow yours with me. Flash you take Burn, and Chrysalis and see about rooms we may be in here for the night find the safest place in here. We’re going to go around make sure this place is sealed off from the outside. I don’t want to risk it.”
“We meet back here in thirty. Let’s move.”
Flash waved and they walked off to the right and I started to walk left. “Brase on me. Rainbow you cover Mac’s back. I want you two go see if you two can find gas heaters or maybe some propane while we check around.”
“Right.”
I started to walk along the wall with Mac and Rainbow head across to the front wall lights showing the way. I started to walk and I looked ahead, my hand tight to the handle. We were quiet for a few minutes until I spoke up. “Look I get it you're not happy with having to follow me. But, we both want the same thing. To make sure the people we care about are fed, clothed, and protected. And, I like it or not Gilda is carried my child I will do everything in my power to keep them alive.” He was quiet for a minute and we stopped as I opened a door to an office.
“Sorry about last week. I wasn’t thinking when I punched you.”
I laughed as I looked back at him. “Don’t worry about it. I get it we were both way over our heads for the last week. And, Gilda has been asking me to try and get along with you and your wife. You have a very sweet wife but Gilda is much more like you most of the time. She’s tough as nails.” Brase laughed and I did too.
“Ya, she is. And, my grandchild will be too. With a mother like her and a father who’s got the balls the do half the stuff, I’ve been told about.”
I laughed before a bang and we jumped and put our backs together before we heard Mac call out.
“Sorry, we knocked over an empty porpane can.”
“Fuck I hate shit like that.”
“Ya.”
We stood up and we started to walk again. I looked at the loading bay doors and looked at the doors. They were locked and I sighed as Brase walked a little as he spoke.
“I used to work in a place like this. Warehouse area’s usally connect to office area’s or hallway to the front offices.”
I nodded then I looked across the way and saw Mac and Rainbow. We finished and meet back up then started to look around.
“Did anyone see where Flash and the others went?”
“Right here.”
We looked to the right as Flash came walking over. He smiled and a second later the lights came up. I laughed then looked at him. “They had a backup genarater?”
“Ya and a few fifty gallon barrels of gas.”
I laughed and nodded as I put my hatchet back on my side. “Well, I’ll be damned. What about offices? Maybe something we can use to get out of this place?” Flash nodded as he looked at me.
“Not really much, there are a few rooms but it’s going to be close quarters. We did find a few dead down there but they were pretty old and slow.”
I nodded and sighed as I looked at him. “Okay, Mac you, Burn and Chrysalis to an office and we’ll be in another. Or we can do what we can to make a closed off area and do what we can to make it comfortable. How do you want to do that compared to being in small offices?” Everyone looked at one another then nodded as they looked back at me.
“Let’s get an area made.”
I nodded and we broke apart grabbing palate jacks. I grabbed one and grabbed an old pile of soil and pulled it to where everyone was making a barricade. It took us a little while but we made a nice area.
“What about the lights?”
I looked up at them then nodded as I looked back to flash. She’s right, once the sun goes down this place will drow them here like a moth to a fla...” A gunshot ring out and I pulled my gun up and put my back on the soil. A few more rang out then a door slammed.
“Come on!”
I could hear the groaning and I felt fear run up my back. I knew we’d be fucked and I looked back at the others. They nodded and I nodded back before I pushed the soil back. It made a loud screech as I shoved the half-lowered jack. I jumped out and saw a large group of ten adult and two teens. I saw two of the larger men trying to hold the door shut. “Don’t make me regret this!” I threw my shotgun over my shoulder and grabbed the jack as Mac and Burn did the same with two others jacks. I started to pull them over and a few of them ran around the plates and started to push. I got the doors blocked and we all took a few steps back as the groans came along with a few bangs on the wood. I looked that the man that seemed to be leading the group. We all looked at one another for a minute until he spoke.
“Well leave as soon as the walkers clear out.”
“Walkers? Oh the dead. Ya, that fine we'll be gone as soon as they clear out too. But first I need to get the generator shut off. They'll never leave as long as there are signs of people in here.”
“Do you need a hand?”
I looked over at a guy around my age. I looked at him for a second and I saw he only had a little meat on his bones, the same as the rest. I looked at them all for a second then looked at Mac. “Mac you dropped that gym bag right out in front of the alley right?”
“Ya about a twenty or so feet away but with the alley it be hell to get.”
“Hell but what about we had extra food in there right?”
‘Ya, but you don’t come back, Gilda is going to kick all our asses.”
“Dude, look at them. They're like skin in bones plus we may be here all night and what little food we have won’t cut that.” I dropped my bag and pulled out my knife and hatchet.
“I think I can help if we can get on the roof.”
I looked over at a woman from the group and she dropped a backpack. She opened it and I saw it filled to the brim with fireworks. I nodded then looked around and smiled as I saw a latter. “Okay, Flash and Burn you two take her on the roof and set those things off. And yell down once enough clear out. I know we can’t get away with them all stirred up like they are. But, we can hold up and keep quiet they should move away from this place soon hopefully.” They nodded and they went up before her and once she was up I went over to the door. Mac got on the tracker and I heard the fireworks going off a minute later.
“GO!”
Mac pulled the tractor back and Rainbow grabbed the doorknob. She opened the door and I ran out killing the closes dead. I charged down the alley killing a few more and ran onto the street and grabbed the bag. I looked over to the front. A wall of dead pressed up alongside the building but a few looked over at me and started to come at me. I took back off at a run. I ran in and Rainbow slammed the door shut as Mac started to drove forward. He reblocked the door and I sighed as I dropped the gym bag and sighed as I sat down on the floor, heart pounding in my chest.
“You okay son?”
I looked up at one of the larger men asked as he looked down at me. “Ya, ya, that’s the third fucking time I’ve done something crazy like that. Anyways, everyone get something to eat.” I threw the bag over to him. He smiled and everyone gathered up around and all of them started to split up and food. I sighed as I wiped the blood off my hatchet and knife. I stood up and put my weapons away and started to walk. “Okay, Generater time.”
“Hey, I’ll come help you.”
I looked back at Rainbow as she ran up with a couple of bags of dried meat we made. She threw me one. I nodded before we started to walk towards the sounds. “What did you hear?”
“That guy about our age was talking about the hospital. I think they may have made a run from that place. Plus, doesn’t it seem like there are more dead in the town the last two or three weeks?”
“Good point. And the fact we haven’t seen any of that army unit around. dDes seem to make since. Well, we’ll do the same deal as always. Keep tight and ears open tonight.”
“Right.”
We reached the generator and I walked over and hit the kill switch. I sighed as I turned on the light and looked over at Rainbow as she leaned on the wall knife in hand. She looked at me and I nodded as I killed the light and pulled out my hatchet. Sure enough, a sound came not a minute later. Slow and steady with no other sound came with it. ‘Someone alive.’ As we waited for something a light turned on.
“Ash where are you guys?”
I sighed hearing Flash’s voice and Rainbow turned on her light.
“In here Flash.”
He walked in and I looked at his hands and stopped. I looked down a recurve bow in his hands with two side quivers in his hands.
“They said they wanted to thank us and all they had to give was a bow they took when they ran from the hospital after it was overrun. None of them know how to use it.”
I laughed then slipped my hatchback into my holder then held my hands out. “Time to thin the herd.” Flash smiled as he looked at me.
“Maybe you should teach some of us to shoot these things. And we got a lot of let over pilates of soil and wood chips.”
I gripped the bow and nodded before grabbing the string and tried giving it a pull. “No, recurve is not my preferred type of bow. Plus, the draw weight is up there and I’m not sure how high.”
“Well, how high does it go?”
“I think the heaviest is like two hundred or something like that.”
“Damn.”
I nodded as I looked at Rainbow. Then slipped the bow over my head before I waved for Flash to start walking.
“Do you think we should bring them back?”
“The quarantine tents should be restocked now. Were in the middle of winter they will die out here.”
I nodded my head as I crossed my arms as looked at him. “You make a good point.” We walked back into the warehouse and I saw everyone expanding the walls we made. They walked over and started to help them as I looked on.
“I guess you’re the one in charge of this group.”
I looked back at her and she was an older woman with an older set of glasses and had on a grey shirt and black jeans with slightly gray hair tied back into a bun.
“Well of this team the zone appointed me as scavenger team lead.”
“Zone?”
She sat down beside the other finished making the wall. “We built a community around the two estates just out of town. The bulk of us came from Canterlot high and the rest we’ve found and brought in.”
“Could you take in more? I have three more daughters hiding out at our rock farm.”
“Well, that may help but we need to survive tonight first.”
