The Gems of Magic
Octavia loves music, hellbent at improving her skill and ability to wield a cello. When a gryphon peddler makes her an offer to do just that, she finds it difficult to refuse despite her friend's bidding. But magic is not to be toyed with.
A gryphon arrives at Ponyville, claiming that his breakthrough in magical theory can enhance anypony's ability at anything. Octavia accepts his offer despite Vinyl's objections. But she's an earth pony, unused to the intricate manipulation the fields of magic require, and that puts her into a very precarious situation.
And then she discovers the universal source of magic.
