Her Guardian Angel

The mare narrowly dodged the sparks of hot orange metal that flew past her as she maneuvered throughout the graveyard of rotting airships, sprinting at full speed. She only stopped to catch a breath of the smoldering red air from time to time, briefly finding any crashed structure or wing of an airship to forge as cover from those who hunted her.

A great pop and clang echoed throughout the graveyard of red sand, and an explosion soon appeared in front of the mare’s eyes. She didn’t flinch at this sight of flames, or even the shrapnel, though; this wasn’t the first time a group of scouting gryphons had used explosives to lure her out of a seemingly endless field of scrap metal. She sighed, and jumped out from the cover of the giant metal wing as she was met with another grenade being hurled towards her location.

She instinctively caught the hot potato with her magic and hurled it back at the scouts. Within a few seconds and an explosion, the band of gryphons had diminished into two terrified, shell-shocked featherbrains and a severely wounded third. The unicorn, who had just turned the tables of her being the hunted, stepped closer to the group of worthless scouts. It was a good thing her targets had been out in the open; they would have otherwise found a way to dodge the grenade. She shook the grey dust from her usually better-kept mane before speaking to her offenders.

“How many times do I have to lower your population until your leader decides that I’m a hard bargain for a trophy?” she asked in a surprisingly serene voice, compared to the ghostly landscape surrounding her. The two conscious gryphons had now recovered from their shellshock, one of them letting out a ear-ringing shriek in response, the other clawing at the ground in a gryphon’s classic charging position. The unicorn chuckled at the sight of the unarmed scouts. The two were clearly under trained but evidently ready for a brawl.

The bigger of the two scouts, the one that had shrieked seconds before, charged full speed at his idle prey, his sharp talons outstretched in offense and his head feathers upright in coordination to his aggression. As he closed in on the mare, a loud flash of smoke mixed with a burning red exploded in front of the lunging gryphon. Before he could react, his face had already met the hot sand ground that had once held a unicorn. He clawed at the ground in his state of anger and jolted his head into the air, eyes darting about, looking for the disappearing pony. Only a split second had passed before another explosion of dust ripped the gryphon’s tail and most of his feathers from his back, sending him through the air in a streak of steam and a yell of pain. The scout then collided with a nearby piece of bent steel, his world drowning in unconsciousness due to the vicious head-banging.

The last conscious gryphon was staring at the unicorn in awe; she had managed to disappear and reappear just like that, in two deadly explosions. He then shook his head after remembering that the status of the spectacle was on the lines of ‘enemy’. He ruffled his brown feathers and proceeded to whip a crest of blades out of his back, running from his neck down his spine.

The calm mare winced at this. “So, you’re not a normal featherbrain?” she asked in a nonchalant manner, cranking up her stance of defense. The gryphon chuckled at this, and proceeded to talk after ripping the metal ring from his neck.

“Since when did you hideous ponies ever become so... brave,” he grumbled in a deep voice, emphasizing the last word as if it had a false meaning. his eyes narrowed on his bounty for at least two seconds until he pounced at the mare, his claw swiping at her neck. Fortunately for her, she ducked his attack, and rolled to the side of her opponent. She then drew back her hind legs before sending them crashing into the gryphon’s gut. The gryphon let out a wheeze and impacted the ground in a burst of red dust. He coughed before pouncing to his feet, swiping his spiked tail

“Look, kid,” the lavender unicorn said to the young Twilight, looking dead into her eyes. “I’ve been with you ever since you were born. I’ve been watching you; I’ve been watching over you,” she said, adding in a whole-hearted smile. “I’m your protector. I know it may come about as a shock, but I’ve been guarding you from all of the evils out there. These evils do not know a place in time or space, so they’re always after you.”

The filly Twilight started to whimper, looking up at her newfound protector with scared eyes. The building lay behind them, crushed into smithereens and burning in intense heat. The older unicorn held the trembling filly close, away from all of the destruction that surrounded them. “I... I have more of a connection to you, Twi. I know I am you, but, after watching you grow up from just a foal, protecting you from the shadows, I have developed a stronger bond. You’re my little sister.” This sentence sent the little Twilight into shedding tears.

“Shh, hush now,” The older Twilight said. “I know, I wish I could have saved Sunshine too, but... that’s the past. She’s in a happier place now. But I can save you from what lurks beyond this path.”

“I am your guardian angel. You can just call me SciTwi.”

The little filly stared at her older counterpart slow as she slowly unfurled her grand metallic wings with an audible screech. “Why do you have wings?” she asked in her small, inquisitive voice.

The older Twilight smirked. “Because, you’ll need these for where I’ve been.”
