An orange pegasus sat on the padded bus seat, waiting as his friend walked on. He quickly waved him over, and he took a seat beside him. The pegasus bounced in his seat excitedly, red and blue hair bobbing to and fro.
"Soooo.....", he said, looking to his friend excitedly.
"What?", replied the dark blue bat pony, as he curiously watched his friend bouncing in the seat beside him.
"What do you mean, 'what'. Don't tell me you forgot!"
The bat pony chuckled to himself, and shook his head slightly, causing his blue and white mane to shake. "No, I didn't forget, DJ."
"GOOD!", DJ exclaimed, as he quickly withdrew a small package from his saddlebags, and placed it into his friends lap. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SKY!!"
Sky opened the package, revealing a small figurine of a bat pony in a pirate costume, standing on its hind legs, and brandishing a sword in it's teeth. "Oh cool! Where'd you get this?"
"I bought it online!" DJ said, smiling. "I noticed you had all the other figures in the set, so I decided, why not, huh?" DJ said.
"DJ, this is freaking awesome", Sky said, giving his friend a hug.
"OH!", DJ exclaimed. "I also got you this!", he reached into his saddlebags again, and pulled out a cake box. DJ opened the cake box, revealing a slightly crushed red velvet cake, with chocolate icing that said 'Happy Birthday Sky' on the top. "It, uhh, it got a bit crushed in my bags, but it should be fine, right? I uhm, made it myself.", DJ began blushing heavily, and continued. "I wasn't sure what type of cake you wanted, so I made red velvet. I know that chocolate is your favorite, so I also added some chocolate chips into the batter while it was cooking, because I know you like those. I was also going add some coconut shavings on top of the icing, because you like those so much, but I ended up adding too much, so I tried to get some of them off, but I ended up taking off too much on one side, so I had to even it all out, but then it still didn't seem een, so I ended up just putting regular chocolate icing on it instead. I hope you like it, because it took a while to make, and like I said, had to do all that stuff with the coconut, and figure out what type of cake to make you, and all that stuff. I just hope it turned out okay, and isn't like, gross or anything. I feel like I'm rambling at this point. Am I rambling? Because if I am, you can just tell me, and I'll shut up...." DJ trailed off as he noticed Sky staring at him.
"You made this?", Sky said. "For me? And you baked it and everything?"
"Well.... yeah.", DJ said, scratching the back of his head with a hoof, and looking down towards the bus floor. "Is.... is something wrong?"
"No, no this is awesome dude. I just had no idea you were so into baking."
"Well, not really. That's actually the first time I've ever baked anything. I wanted to make it special, for you.", DJ's blush increased tenfold.
"Thats..... Thats cool dude! Thanks so much! I'll put it in my bag, and then me, you, and Saffire can all split it during lunch today." Sky took the cake out if DJ's hooves, and slipped it into his own saddlebags, careful not to disturb the cake at all. He then placed the figurine on top, and closed it shut. The bus rolled to a stop in front of the pair's high school, Fleming High, Home of the Colonels. Sky got up, and merged into the sea of students getting off the bus, as DJ followed suit behind him. The duo shambled out of the bus doors, and into the school, following the group of ponies, all stumbling lazily through the main entrance of the school, most of them sleep deprived from a long night of studying.
DJ turned to Sky and asked, "So what classes do you have today?"
"Uhh.. I'm pretty sure I have Mrs. Trot's Economics class in a few minutes, and then after that I have band practice. Then I have Ecology class."
"Well... uhm...". DJ shuffled uncomfortably from hoof to hoof.
"What?", Sky asked.
"Would you like to uhm... uh...", DJ looked around nervousy.
Sky looked at him curiously.
"Would you... wanna hang out at my house later today?", DJ asked. He mentally kicked himself. Dammit. Thats not what you wanted to ask, was it?
"Sure man, Don't know why you took so long to ask something like that, but alright.", Sky said.
"A-alright. I'll see you later dude" Sky said, as he turned around and headed in the other direction. DJ found his eyes being drawn towards his friends flank...
God, I reeeally want that... STOP IT! It’s.... it’s not natural to like your friend like that..... But it’s true though....STOP! A stallions supposed to like mares, not... other stallions... thats... thats just how it is.
DJ mentally scolded himself. It’s definitely not natural to feel how he was feeling, was it? At least, that’s what everyone keeps saying, right? A stallion should be with a mare, and only a mare... right? But... it doesn’t feel right. What he was feeling right then, that felt right. He’d tried liking mares before, but it didn’t really feel right to him. The way he felt for Sky, he’d never felt this way towards anypony else before. It just felt... right. DJ shook his head, dislodging those thoughts. I’ll just go see a counselor, he thought, turning around and walking to his class.
DJ sat in class, watching as the hands slowly made their way to 10:22. The sharp ringing of the bell rang through the halls, signalling the end of the period. DJ quickly gathered his belonging, and rushed through the door to make it to lunch. He swiftly trotted down the crowded, bustling hallways, and towards the lunch room. Passing by the counselors office, he hesitated for a minute, and stepped through the door. A kind looking, pink coated unicorn mare greeted him warmly.
“Hi, and what can I do for you today?”, she said, smiling at him from behind the desk.
“I... I’d like a moment with the counselor, if you wouldn’t mind.“, DJ asked shyly.
“Sure, go right ahead. Mrs. Dee is right in her office,” the mare said, pointing down a small hallway towards an office door, located snugly in the back. DJ thanked the mare, and started towards the hallway, his mind racing as he continued to walk. Why am I doing this? What if she thinks there’s something wrong with me? What if there IS something wrong with me? What if I tell her my problems, and she thinks I’m weird and doesn’t help me? No... no, she wouldn’t do that... Crap, I’m there’s here door... DJ took a deep breath, and knocked on the door to Mrs. Dee’s office. A soft, and friendly voice answered from behind the door.
“Come in.” DJ stepped through the doorway, and hesitantly sat down in the door across from Mrs. Dee’s desk, shifting his eyes towards the ground. “Well, hi there DJ. Never seen you here, is everything okay?”, the mint green pegasus with the sky blue mane asked, smiling warmly towards him.
“Mrs. Dee?”, DJ shuffled his hooves uncomfortably.
“Yes?”
“You’re a counselor, right? And counselor’s are supposed to be able to help with student’s problems, within reason, no matter what they are, and to the best of their ability, correct?”
“Yes, I do believe so. What’s the matter?”a, she asked, eyeing him curiously.
“Well, uhm.... I’m.... I’m not really sure how to begin... There’s been a lot for me to think about these past few days...”
“Well, why don’t you start from the beginning, if that’s possible...”
“Okay. Well... There’s this other pony, who I’ve been friends with for a fairly long time, but.... recently I’ve been wanting to be a bit closer than just friends... I don’t know what to do. I know I should just tell them, but I have no idea how they would react, and what that could mean for our friendship. I don’t want to possibly ruin one of, if not the best friendship I’ve had in all my life, yaknow? I mean, I like them, like, a LOT, and I want to be with them more than anything, but... I just, I don’t know. I’m so confused right now, and I have no idea what to do.”
Mrs. Dee thought for a minute, before replying. “Well, If I were you, I’d start by telling her how you feel, and then--”
“Him...” DJ said, almost inaudibly.
“Excuse me?” Mrs. Dee leaned forward, trying to hear as best as she could.
“H-him....” DJ said, blushing intensely. “I... I know it’s not right for me to like another stallion, but dear god, I do. I like everything about him. The way he talks, his personality, his walk, how he always smells like butterscotch, even during gym class. I know it’s wrong, but I like him... a lot. I don’t know what he’d do if I tell him how I feel, or what everyone else would do if they knew I like stallions. I’m scared as hell that he won’t accept me, and would just avoid me forever. I’m scared of potentially losing him forever, and I’m even more terrified about telling my parents that I like another stallion. I mean, my dad isn’t the most accepting about things like this, and I don’t know what he’d do if--,” Mrs. Dee held up a hoof, silencing him.
“DJ... Look around you. Do you really think ponies would judge you based on your sexual preference? No. They won’t. There’s tons of ponies in this school alone that like the same gender, or even both genders. Ponies won’t judge you at all for it. It’s a perfectly natural thing to be attracted to somepony, mare or stallion, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of in any way. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. As for how he’d react when you tell him, and whether he’d accept you or not, well you never know unless you try. No pony ever got anywhere by just doing nothing. If you keep these feelings inside, and do nothing about them, you’re just going to end up hurting yourself. If you don’t tell him, then there’s a possibility that he’s going to move onto other ponies. If you don’t want that to happen, then just tell him. The worst thing that would happen is that he’s say no. And if he does ignore and avoid you for it, well, then, he wasn’t a very good friend, now was he? Just tell him how you feel. As for you’re parents, I can’t answer too well for them. It can be hard as hell coming out to you’re parents, believe me, I was in the same boat as you when I was younger, but as I said before, nothing was ever accomplished by doing nothing. I’d recommend finding, or scheduling a convenient time, sitting down with them both, and just telling them. And, in the chance that they don’t accept you, so what? There’s plenty of other ponies out there that will. Be proud of who you are, and be proud of your sexuality DJ. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, or to hide. It’s who you are, and you should own it one hundred percent. Once you do that, all these doubt’s and fears will just wash away, leaving the beautiful pony you are for all the world to see. Do you understand what I’m saying DJ?”
DJ remained silent, and nodded his head, processing what he just heard.
“Good. Now, you should get some lunch. If you ever need anything, just tell me, I’m always right here. Now go get that stallion!” Mrs. Dee finished cheerfully.
DJ got up from his chair, and walked over to the other pony, wrapping her in a hug. “Thank you, Mrs. Dee. This really means a lot to me.”
“You’re welcome. Again, I’m always right here if you need somepony to talk to.”
“Thank you....”DJ said, as he stepped through the door, and into the hallway. Mrs. Dee waved a cheery goodbye to him as he started down the hallway, towards the lunch room.
Just tell him. It’s that easy. DJ thought, as he continued down the hallway. What do I have to lose? I’ve got this!
