Spike, now 18, has grown out of his boyish crush on Rarity, and, while still not quite a 'man', had over the last year, elected to court a woman more likely to return his affections, Smolder.
As Hearth Warming Eve draws near, Spike insteads wishes to have a Feast of Fire with Smolder, so to 1)get to be with her, 2) get a feel for the draconic practice and 3) show her how much of a dragon he is.
Smolder is down for it however instead of gems as the prize of who tells the best story, Smolder says if she wins, then Spike has to get for her the fire ruby necklase Rarity has. And if Spike wins, it will a night he will never forget.
