It’s funny how losing something important can end up being the greatest thing to ever happen to somepony, even if in the moment, it seems like there’s no way anypony could ever learn something from it. Although the whole idea of a trial turning into a blessing is completely predicated on luck, it’s important to keep things in perspective with a healthy level of optimism, knowing that trials don’t define the pony as much as how they respond to it. Even heartache, the most painful feeling in the world, can end up bringing ponies closer together than before, which is exactly what happened with Feather Bangs and Big Macintosh.
Ever since Big Mac and Sugar Belle started dating, the youngest member of the Apple family made it her mission to make sure that there wouldn’t be any bad blood between Feather Bangs and her brother. Every time Big Mac traveled to Starlight’s old village, Applebloom would tag along to visit Feather Bangs and see how he was doing, and so far, the bitter emotions had seemed to disappear completely. In fact, Feather Bangs had even come back with the Apples a few times and stayed at their farm, but he may have had more than one reason other than trying to make peace with Big Macintosh.
“Now the trick here is to make sure that as much milk as possible makes it into the bucket, but be careful now. Bessy here likes to make a fuss every once in a while.”
The cow beside them huffed with her nose in the air. “Only because you’re a little too rough with my udders, don’tcha know?”
Feather Bangs and Applejack laughed blissfully as the stallion attempted to milk a cow for the first time, which, as Applejack imagined, could have turned out better than it did. Feather Bangs had been coming to Sweet Apple Acres every week for the past two months, which he said was to hang out with Big Mac, but he always happened to coincidentally come when Big Mac was at his busiest. Instead, he spent most of his time with the middle child of the Apple family, Applejack, whom he was beginning to enjoy spending time with more and more after every visit.
“Yo, Applejack,” Feather Bangs began once he started to get the hang of the milking process. “What you doin’ after your chores are finished, girl?”
“I’m sorry, Feather Bangs,” she replied, “but I think my chores are gonna take up the whole day today. Maybe Big Mac’ll finish up soon and you’ll be able to hang out with him. He was the one you came to see anyway, right?”
Feather Bangs chuckled awkwardly as his cheeks began to blush red. “Oh, yeah. For sure. Hey! What if I helped you knock out whatever you needed to do? We could get everything done twice as fast!”
“Sorry, Feather,” Applejack said, shaking her head. “I’m afraid it doesn’t work like that. Not only will you not be as fast as me, but teachin’ you will take up more time than we’d save with you helpin’ me, and that’s if we don’t end up runnin’ into each other the whole time we’re tryin’ to plow the fields.”
“Yeah, no prob, girl. I just thought I’d lend a hoof, just in case.”
Suddenly, an eerie laughter filled the room as the light began to disappear, revealing a thick fog and dark shadow beginning to stretch itself out of thin air. The three of them, including Bessy, were all shaking in fear until the fog cleared away to reveal a creature with the head of a pony, a lion’s paw, an eagle claw and a snake tail emerging from the shadows, laughing hysterically. Feather Bangs and Bessy continued to tremble, both hanging onto Applejack for protection as the farmer pony immediately gained a newfound confidence.
“Discord, what’d I tell y’all about comin’ to my farm? I still have popcorn coverin’ half my fields after the last time you were here!”
Feather Bangs froze, switching glances between the mare and the draconequus as Applejack continued to stare the creature down. ”You know what this thing is?!” Feather Bangs exclaimed, eliciting another loud laugh from the dragon-like being.
“You mean you haven’t told your friends about me?” Discord asked, his body cracking and crumbling to the floor until his limbs dissolved into sand. “Applejack, I’m crushed!”
“Will you quit yer games and tell us what you’re doin’ here?”
Then, suddenly regenerating himself to his earlier form, Discord stretched his limbs and twisted his head around… all the way around. “Oh, drat! It seems I’ve forgotten. I just can’t keep my head on straight these days.” Applejack growled in frustration, to which Discord slithered beside her with a claw around her shoulder. “Although it seems you have quite the burden of chores today. I’m sure you wouldn’t mind help from somepony of my caliber helping you out, would you?”
Applejack then pushed the draconequus off of her and said, “Thanks, but no thanks! I’ve got a lot of work to do, and I don’t need any more problems with you goofin’ off in my fields!”
“Fine,” he replied, slithering over to Feather Bangs, who was now shaking in fear again. “How about him? Can I play with him?”
“Say what, bro?”
“Absolutely not!” Applejack exclaimed, stomping her hoof to the ground. “I’m used to your pranks goin’ haywire, but y’all better leave Feather Bangs out of this!”
“Awwww! How cute! Applejack’s standing up for her special somepony.” Feather Bangs and Applejack then looked each other in the eye and turned away blushing, creating a wide smile on Discord’s face. “Alright! If you say so! Although you don’t know what you’re missing out on. I’m actually a hoot at parties!”
Finally, with another loud laugh, thunder and lightning filled the barn again, and after a bright flash of lightning, Discord once again disappeared without any trace of ever being there. Even with Discord gone, though, Feather Bangs remained on edge, trembling from his close encounter from the strange creature with the menacing body. How did Applejack know this guy? Were the two of them friends? Regardless, without even being phased from Discord’s visit, Applejack returned to her chores as if nothing had ever happened.
Afterwards, with Applejack and Big Mac both working on chores all day, Feather Bangs ended up spending the majority of his day with Applebloom and her friends as they goofed off around Ponyville. Of course, there were plenty of odd stares from passersby seeing a grow stallion playing with three fillies, but with the only ponies he knew being on the other side of Equestria, what else was he going to do until dinner? He wanted to bring up to the crusaders what he had seen in the barn, but he didn’t know whether Applebloom would play it off like Applejack did or become terrified like he was. Maybe at dinner he could bring it up?
Soon enough, though, once dinner arrived, Feather Bangs decided not to talk about it after all. The Apples were treating him to such a beautiful feast that he didn’t want to mention a possibly sore subject, especially since Applejack seemed so annoyed by his arrival in the first place.
“This is great, Granny Smith,” Feather Bangs said, digging into his corn on the cob. “You know, if you wanna try livin’ on the edge out west, I might try to take you home with me. We could use a little more beauty to liven up the place.” Feather Bangs threw a wink to add to his charm, making Granny Smith giggle femininely.
“If mah hip could take me there, I’d be there in a heartbeat!” Granny replied, adding her own less-attractive wink.
“Naw, girl. I couldn’t take you away from your family. Speakin’ of which, where’s momma Apple? She comin’ home soon?”
Then, just as Feather Bangs had tried to avoid, the entire table went silent, and he suddenly got a feeling as to why he hadn’t seen either of the parents around lately. Looking up to Applejack for help, he could see her awkward expression to take the lead, but transitioning from the topic of dead parents isn’t always easy to do.
“A-anyway, y’all shoulda seen this caterpillar I saw today!” Applejack said, departing from the previous conversation. “I’m tellin’ ya, it was the size of a squirrel! It’s just a shame we had to feed him to the buzzards.”
This girl was a lifesaver, which was one of the many things that Feather Bangs had become attracted to, but how could he even hope to get her to like him if he kept screwing up like that? It wasn’t always that he said the wrong thing, which he tended to do a lot anyway, but he also just wanted to be able to fit in and relate more to what she did and the stories she told. It’s kind of hard to relate to farming when he couldn’t even help plow the fields.
Eventually, though, the four of them finished dinner and Feather Bangs thanked Granny Smith for preparing the food and giving him a place to sleep. He would probably have to return to his village the next day, at least if he didn’t want Applejack to find out that she was the real reason he was over so often. As he retired to his bedroom, he fluffed his pillow, pulled out his journal and lit a candle for him to be able to see his notes before going to bed, but just as soon as the candle was lit, it fizzled out immediately. With an eyebrow raised, Feather Bangs lit another match and added the flame to the wick of the candle, only this time, everything went bright except for what the candle was supposed to be lighting.
“What the…?” Feather Bangs mumbled, but no sooner had he done so when the fire rose up from the wick and flew out the window, stopping at a point in the fields as if it were waiting for him to come down. Feather Bangs had no idea what was going on, similar to the average pony’s reaction, but his curiosity was now as bright as the flame calling out to him. Without a second more of hesitation, Feather Bangs rose from his bed, creaked his way down the stairs and made his way outside, meeting the lone light. “Is there something here?” he asked the light, but as soon as he did, the fire soared through the air again, leading him straight into the orchard.
Feather Bangs’s heart was now beating like crazy, chasing after the flame as fast as he could before it accidentally--or purposefully--lit the orchard on fire, creating yet another headache for the Apple family. Luckily, though, the fire was swerving through the trees better than he could, with tree branches and loose sticks clipping him all over his body as he chased the fire with extreme urgency. Finally, the light stopped in its place, causing Feather Bangs to fall to his haunches and screech to a halt before he accidentally ran into it and set himself on fire. What he saw, though, was…
“Nothing.” Again, he looked around to make sure, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary to him. “Why did you call me out here when there’s nothing here?”
“Aww, you don’t really think that, do you?” The stallion jumped in place, screaming in shock as he turned his head and saw the same mysterious beast from before lying down on a nearby tree branch. “I don’t think I’m nothing.”
“You’re… You’re…”
“No, I am not ‘Your’. I am Discord. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.” Discord stood up and bowed before slithering his way up to Feather Bangs’s face, staring deep into his eyes. “In case you couldn’t tell, I’ve had my eyes on you since you first arrived here.”
“W-why?” Feather Bangs stammered. “Why did you want me here?”
Discord smiled. “Because I can help make Applejack fall in love with you.”
Feather Bangs’s heart went from beating violently to stopping completely, his eyes going wide as Discord’s sly smile grew wider. This was exactly what Feather Bangs had wanted, but could he really trust this creature that not even Applejack thought she could trust, and even if he could, would this really be a good idea?
“What do you mean?” Feather Bangs asked hesitantly.
“What do you mean what do I mean? I’m saying that I need Applejack to loosen up a little bit so she’ll be a little less tense when I ask her to come play with me. You feel the same, don’t you?”
Wow. He really hit the nail on the head with that one.
“It doesn’t matter how I feel! What matters is how Applejack feels, and I don’t want to force her to feel anything!”
“Force her? What kind of monster do you take me for? What I’m proposing is one wish.”
Feather Bangs raised an eyebrow. “A… wish?”
“Precisely! Any which wish you wish! You seem to know Applejack better than anypony, so you should know exactly what you want to wish for that would make her the happiest mare in the whole world. That’s how you win her heart, Feather Bangs, through doing things that make her happy.”
As sketchy as this whole situation was, his logic was sound. As long as he did something that would make Applejack happy, she would be happy being with him, right? At this point, though, the only question was what would make her happy in the first place. As Feather Bangs paced between the trees in the orchard, he tried to think back to when Applejack was at her happiest, but then, he remembered that if she was already happy, he would just be wasting his wish. He needed to remember when she was at her lowest point, her most miserable memory, whatever event in her life that caused her the most pain that he could use his wish to remedy…
...and that’s when it came to him…
“Alright!” Feather Bangs announced once he had an idea in his head. “I just want to make things clear before I go through with any of this hocus pocus.”
“Wonderful! I wouldn’t want you going through with anything you didn’t fully understand anyway. I will answer any questions you have.”
“OK…” Feather Bangs took a deep breath. “So you can grant any wish?”
“Anything you could possibly want is something that I can give to you.”
“And… There won’t be any side-effects, right? Like nopony has to give up anything in order to fulfill this wish, right?”
“No more than any other choice you make in life, I suppose.”
Feather Bangs clenched his teeth, still fighting with himself as to whether he should really make this wish or not, but with no clear reason other than a gut feeling persuading him not to, he lifted his head and said, “OK, Discord. You have a deal. I wish…” Discord furrowed his brows as his smile grew wider, making Feather Bangs even more uncomfortable with his decision. “I wish… to bring Applejack’s mom back to life!”
As soon as the words escaped his mouth, the ground began to rumble and shake with Discord laughing hysterically amid the chaos. Feather Bangs was now beginning to think that he had been tricked, like he had said some kind of password that triggered the end of Equestria, but even as the ground rumbled, none of the surrounding trees were falling. Then, suddenly, the ground began to open up in front of a tree that the stallion hadn’t noticed before, a tree in the shape of a heart carrying both apples and pears on its branches.
“What’s happening?!” Feather Bangs asked in a panic.
“Your wish is coming true!” Discord replied with another cackle as the ground opened up further, revealing a bright light emanating from the torn earth. Then, a small shadow began to appear within the light, gradually rising towards the surface until its figure began to take shape above the surface, making Feather Bangs panic again.
The figure was a skeleton in the shape of a pony, its bones shaking and convulsing as it floated in the air. It was covered in dust and mold with small pieces of flesh still attached to its bones, but after a few moments of shaking, the figure began to change again, with muscles suddenly growing out of the bones and organs beginning to pump within its ribcage. Its body continued to contract and morph until skin and fur gradually emerged on top of the figure’s surface, changing its shape from decrepit skeleton to maimed zombie… and eventually, to a normal mare with a regular, living body.
Her eyes spun in their sockets, her tongue rolling into her jaw as the body flailed like it was beginning to take air into her lungs for the first time, and finally, the mare was beginning to stand up straight, no longer flailing or convulsing. Her eyes were now stuck in place, her nostrils pulling in normally and her body functioning the way any normal pony would, and with the snap of his fingers, Discord disappeared, waking the pony up from her ten year slumber.
Immediately, the pony fell to her knees, to which Feather Bangs quickly rushed over to help her up to her hooves. “Where…” she began, talking in a soothing voice that resembled Applejack’s. “Where am I?”
“Shhh,” Feather Bangs whispered, holding the mare up onto her legs. “You must be tired, girl. You take a minute and try catchin’ your breath real quick, a’ight?”
“Who… Who are you?”
“The name’s Feather Bangs, and you’re in Sweet Apple Acres, your home.”
“My… home?”
Suddenly, Feather Bangs began to panic again. What if she had amnesia? Would she even remember her own family? Was there anything he could do to jog back her memory? As he continued to fight with himself, though, the mare quickly seemed to snap out of whatever spell she was under.
“I’m back home on the farm!” she exclaimed. “Wait… That still doesn’t explain you, though.”
“I’m a friend of your daughter’s,” Feather Bangs replied with a mane flip. “You remember Applejack?”
“APPLEJACK! Is she here? Where’s my baby?”
“Hold on, girl! I’d be happy to take you back to your kids, but first I need to know a little bit more about you, just to make sure you ain’t got any problems with your memories.”
The mare beside him rubbed her head in pain. “My head’s still a little fuzzy, but it’s startin’ to come back to me. My name’s Pear Butter. I’m a proud wife and mother of three beautiful children, Big Macintosh, Applejack and Applebloom. Is there anythin’ else I should know?”
“Uhh… yeah…” Feather Bangs replied, wondering whether he should even go down this rabbit hole. “What’s the last thing you remember?”
Pear Butter rubbed her temple again, racking her brain to clear up the foggy memories. “The last thing I remember is holdin’ baby Applebloom in my hooves. Wait, is she OK?! Please tell me my baby girl is OK!”
“She’s good!” Feather Bangs said, holding up his hoof to calm down the frantic mare. “All your kids are doin’ just fine, girl.”
“What about Bright Mac? Is he OK too?”
Feather Bangs’s eyes went wide. He hadn’t even thought to bring him back to life as well. As he looked back into Pear Butter’s pupils, though, she could easily tell what he was trying to hide from her. “Pear Butter, I need you to try to remember--”
“Where’s Bright Mac?! Where’s my husband?!”
“He’s… dead…”
Pear Butter froze. “Dead…?”
“Yeah,” Feather Bangs continued, rubbing the back of his head. “Just like…”
“‘Just like…’?”
“...you…”
Pear Butter’s jaw dropped, still frozen like a picture. “W-what?”
Great. Pear Butter had no recollection of her death, which meant that Feather Bangs would have to explain things to her despite not knowing anything about her other than her name. Applejack would surely be happy to be reunited with her mother, but the initial shock of coming back to life would be an obstacle to overcome for sure.
“I brought you back to life,” Feather Bangs said, trying to sell the positive aspects of the grave situation. “I brought you back so that you could see your kids again, and they could have a mother again!”
“No…” Pear Butter mumbled, looking at her hooves as her body began to tremble once more. “NOOOOOO!!!!!!”
“Calm down, girl!” Feather Bangs pleaded, holding up his hooves to help her relax as best he could.
“Calm down?! How in the hay am I supposed to calm down when not only am I dead, but I don’t even get to rest in peace?! Feather Bangs, I thank ya kindly for wantin’ me to see my family again, but I can’t be here. I need to go back to the other side!”
“I…” Feather Bangs began, thinking of this as a very suitable option after all, but as he thought of how to do it without murdering her, he realized that the only way to do it was through Discord, who was now nowhere to be found. “I don’t know how.”
“You mean you can bring me to life but not send me back?!”
“Can’t you just stay here? You’ve got family here. Your kids wanna see you. They miss you.”
Tears were now beginning to well up behind Pear Butter’s eyes. “I miss them too. I miss them so much. Does Big Mac have his cutie mark yet?”
Feather Bangs chuckled. “They all do. Even little Applebloom. You should feel so proud.”
Pear Butter sniffled, causing a sea of spiders to crawl out of her nose and down her neck. “I am so proud! I wanna see them more than anythin’, really I do! It’s just… This ain’t right. I’m not supposed to be here. I wanna see how much they’ve grown! I wanna see what cutie marks they have and meet all their friends, but a pony is only ever supposed to live once.”
“But… I don’t know what else to do.”
Pear Butter furrowed her eyebrows in frustration. “Well, how in the hay did you bring me back to begin with?!”
“Trust me, girl,” Feather Bangs said in his defense. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”
“Well, I sure believe that I’m dead. Is it really less believable than that?”
Just as she had asked the question, the orchard became filled with the same thick fog as earlier with laughter echoing throughout the trees, making both ponies flinch in fear. Then, as before, with a dark figure rising from the ground once more, Pear Butter dove to the ground with one hoof latching onto Feather Bangs while the other covered her head, shaking incessantly in fear. Feather Bangs, though, even through the same fear he felt every time he saw Discord, was breathing a sigh of relief. Maybe now he could take back his wish before anypony got hurt.
“Hello, everypony!” the god of chaos sang. “It’s good seeing you again, Feather Bangs, and is that Pear Butter I see?! My goodness! Being dead for ten years hasn’t aged you one bit!”
“Feather Bangs, what’s goin’ on?” Pear Butter asked, shaking in fear.
Feather Bangs wanted to answer her, but as he looked down and saw how terrified she was looking at what she could only perceive as a demon spirit, he quickly looked up at the draconequus and said, “Discord, I changed my mind! I don’t want her alive anymore.”
Discord laughed again, making the two ponies before him gulp in anxiety. “You see, Feather Bangs, I’d love to, but there’s just one teensy weensy problem I forgot to mention earlier.” A catch. Of course there was a catch. Why did he think anything differently? “It takes at least forty-five minutes from the time of resurrection for the pony to be reburied. That is…” As Discord trailed off, a large smirk crossed his face. “...unless you wanted to bury her alive.”
“Yes!” Pear Butter exclaimed, pulling herself to her hooves. “Let’s do that. I don’t wanna be here no more.”
“Girl, are you crazy?!” Feather Bangs shouted, bringing her back to her knees. “We’ll wait the forty-five minutes.”
“It’s settled, then!” Discord said with his claws in the air. “In forty-five minutes, you will be as good as dead again, and you’ll be able to return to your husband on the other side of mortality. So long, everypony! It’s been an honor to finally meet you!” Then, with another loud laugh, Discord disappeared yet again into the darkness.
Once he was gone, Pear Butter immediately turned towards Feather Bangs and shouted, “What did you do that for?!”
“I’m sorry if I don’t wanna bury you alive! Can’t you just wait the forty-five minutes? It’s better than having to keep yourself alive forever, right?”
“I guess…” Pear Butter then fell onto her haunches, staring sadly at her hooves. “Can you… tell me about my kids in the meantime?”
Feather Bangs smiled, wrapping a hoof around the mare’s shoulder as he began to tell her all about her children, from Big Mac’s success in romance as well as Applebloom’s cutie mark. Of course, the pony he had spent the most time talking about was Applejack, which wasn’t a hard thing to do even if he weren’t crazy in love with her. He told her about all the times that Applejack had helped save Equestria, from the time she had save the world from Nightmare Moon to the time she’d helped defeat Tirek, making Pear Butter sob into her hooves.
“I wanna believe you,” she said between sobs, “but I don’t know if I can. Are you tellin’ me that my baby girl is really that important to all of Equestria?”
“You raised her right,” Feather Bangs said, eliciting a tight squeeze from the mare, creating a cracking sound that Feather Bangs couldn’t identify as his spine or hers. As soon as the hug was over, though, Pear Butter continued looking into Feather Bangs’s eyes, smiling wide from ear to ear until suddenly…
“MMFF!”
...Pear Butter was planting a kiss onto the stallion’s lips, holding his shoulders as close to her as possible as she continued to squeeze him with all of her strength. After a few moments of struggling, however, Pear Butter realized what she was doing and immediately released him from her grip.
“Oh, my goodness,” Pear Butter said, looking away and pulling her mane behind her ear as her cheeks went red. “I’m so sorry. I don’t know what came over me.”
Feather Bangs flipped his mane. “Don’t worry, Mrs. P. Happens all the time. Ha ha.”
Pear Butter raised an eyebrow, grinning quietly. “You sure about that?”
“At least if I had anything to say about it, it would. Ha ha.”
“Still, I’m so sorry about that. I guess hearin’ you tellin’ me about my kids made me so happy that I needed to share it with somepony, and… I guess that somepony turned out to be you.” She then wiped away some nervous sweat dripping down her face, wiping away a piece of skin along with her. “Phew. I guess not bein’ touched in ten years really does things to a mare, doesn’t it?”
Feather Bangs chuckled, waiting for an elaboration before sitting there awkwardly in silence. “W-what do you mean?”
“I mean I’m horny.”
“Oh! Oh, you mean--Oh…” Pear Butter looked away in embarrassment as Feather Bangs rubbed the back of his head, blushing until his whole face turned as bright as Big Mac. “Well, I guess mares get like that too.”
“I’m sorry!” Pear Butter shouted, covering her face with her hooves. “That was more than you needed to know!”
“No, you’re good! You just… caught me off guard a little.”
“Maybe we should just change the subject!”
“Or… you know… k-keep talking about it…”
Pear Butter tilted her head in confusion, but was unable to hold back the playful smile that was beginning to cross her lips. “Really?” she asked, inadvertently fluttering her eyelashes. “What did you wanna talk about?”
“Just… you know… How are you feeling?”
“I’m pretty sure you know how I’m feelin’. Why do you ask?”
“Because, I was wondering with you being married and all, would it be weird if you… I mean, you’re a very beautiful mare! Not that I’m hitting on you or anything, but--”
Feather Bangs’s words were cut off short as Pear Butter fell onto her back and began laughing loudly, holding onto her abdomen as she rolled from side to side. “I appreciate you bein’ so considerate, but Bright Mac and I are both dead. I believe our vows said ‘until death do you part,’ which in my book means I’m fair game.”
“Really? You mean, it wouldn’t be a problem if--”
“Sugarcube, my husband’s been dead for ten years. You’re allowed to have sex with me.”
Feather Bangs began to choke on his own insecurities, coughing his saliva out of his windpipe as the beautiful mare in front of him continued to bat her eyelashes. He had been in love before, the majority of which were mares who were far more beautiful than the average mare, but he had never even thought of pursuing somepony of Pear Butter’s beauty. She was on a completely different level, and death had not aged her one bit. Here she was, basically offering her body as a favor that Feather Bangs would be fulfilling for her, and here he was coughing like an idiot because of a pair of baby blue eyes.
“Soooo,” Pear Butter began, approaching Feather Bangs closer while her eyes discreetly searched for his nether region. “How’re you feelin’?”
“Uh…” Feather Bangs gulped. “Horny.”
“Oh, really? You wouldn’t mind provin’ it now, would ya?” With Pear Butter still looking down at his crotch, Feather Bangs shakily moved his legs out of the way to reveal his shaft slightly poking out of his sheath, revealing the pink skin underneath. Then, out of nowhere, the mare suddenly began to giggle, covering her mouth with her hooves to hide how wide her smile was. “Awww! It’s so cute!”
“Oh, yeah?” Feather Bangs said playfully. “Let’s see yours, then!”
Pear Butter rolled her eyes. “Fiiiine!” Then, without wasting a single moment, of which they didn’t have many to waste, Pear Butter turned around and pulled her butt cheek to the side, revealing her own dripping genitalia spread for him to see her inner folds and tight, perky anus.
