So I Told You I Was Happy For You
Author's Note
Wow, so this came outta nowhere. I was driving home from work a few days ago and the song 'I see it now' by Tracy Lawrence came on, and then immediately after, 'You were mine' by The Dixie Chicks came on. This idea came into my head and I spent the whole ride home listening to those two songs on repeat, working on a plot. Then as I was editing today, the song 'Just to see you smile' by Tim McGraw popped into my head.
This is my first Rarijack fic. I'm trying to branch out a bit and write other stories, and particularly stories that have different elements, like one of my other fics is written entirely like a journal, so I tried to do something unique with this fic as well!
I hope all y'all have a great Christmas! The holiday season has always been rough on me since I don't have very good stable parents, and my grown-ass siblings are always fighting with each other. So if you're like me, with a shit home life, take care of y'all's selves, and do what you need to stay sane.
Anyways, I hope y'all enjoy this, it's not beta-d but life is too short for a beta reader.
R&R!

So I Told You I Was Happy For You
“What is the next step?” You ask as I lower the temperature on the stove, and give the stew a few stirs before placing the lid on top.
“Now we wait, sugar. We let the meat cook a bit and get real tender before we add the veggies and the rest of the broth.”
You pick up your wine glass and take a sip. “I never knew what a delicate process it was to make beef stew.”
Your socked foot taps along with the song quietly playing on the kitchen radio.
“Well, if y’want it done right, it takes time. Trust me, it’ll be worth it, ‘specially on a cold night like this.”
“Then whatever shall we do while we wait?” You look at me with mischievous blue eyes, setting your glass back down and leaning against the counter, “we have a lot of time on our hands.”
I smile at you and move closer, gently wrapping my arms around your waist. “I can think of somethin’.”
Pressing a sweet kiss against your lips, I take your hands, placing one on my hip and holding the other. Slowly we start moving, getting the feel for the song in the background.
I lead, taking my time to twirl you around the kitchen and you laugh when I trip over the rug.
“My stars, Rarity,” I almost whisper as I stare at you, “you are so beautiful.”
The smile that lights up your face is the most flawless, genuine thing I’ve ever seen and it makes my knees weak.
Slowing down to nothing more than rocking side to side, you reach up and put your hands behind my neck. “I’m not even half as gorgeous as you are, my darling.”
The kiss you give me makes my face flush. “I love you so much Rares.”
“And I love you with every fiber of my being, Applejack.”
“AJ! Hey AJ, you okay?”
I jump and look up to Rainbow who is staring at me with a worried expression.
“Woah, Applejack, are you crying?”
“Huh?” I answer, swiping the back of my hand across my face, revealing that I had been crying. I hadn’t even noticed. I was too busy watching her.
I glance back to the center of the dance floor where Rarity and Fancy were having their first dance together as husband and wife. To our song.
Rainbow noisily pulled up a chair and sat beside me. I noticed she had taken her hair down and her shoes off, something I was tempted to do as well. We shared the same lavender outfit and hairstyle as our other friends on accord of us all being Rarity’s bridesmaids. I had almost refused the offer, but I could never say no to her.
“Applejack, I’m so sorry.” Rainbow’s hand found mine under the dim lights and I let a few more tears fall.
“I didn’t think it was gonna be this hard, lettin’ her go.”
As the song ended, everyone clapped and hollered as the new couple shared a kiss. Another more upbeat song came on and some of the guests started getting up to dance.
My eyes followed Rarity as she danced, smiling happily to her husband who was looked just as happy as she did.
“AJ, you know me, I don’t know much about love or relationships, but I do know you. You’re going to get past this, you always do, you’re the strongest person I know. And I can’t pretend to know how you feel, but I can try to cheer you up. Come with me, let’s get a drink and we can take a walk outside or dance or go scream at the stars. Whatever will make you feel better.
“It’s up to you, but you need to get away from this table. I don’t even think you ate dinner. You’ve been sitting here since the reception started and you look pathetic.”
She nudged me playfully and I gave her a half-hearted grin.
“I reckon I could use a drink right about now.”
“Agreed. I always drown my problems in alcohol.” She stood up and pulled me to my feet.
“Y’drown everything in alcohol, Rae. You’re a damn alcoholic.”
“Functioning alcoholic, thank you. Now lets find the strongest thing we can.”
Walking up to the drink table, there was plenty of selection.
“Oooh, they have tequila! Look! Fireball! We should do a shot of both.”
I snorted and shook my head. “I was thinkin’ a cocktail. I wanna make it outta here alive and with some of my dignity in tact.”
“Lame. Come on, how about a shot and then a drink. Best of both worlds. We‘re supposed to be drowning out your sorrows here.”
“Fine, one shot.”
“Did someone say shots?!” Pinkie came up to us, face flushed from dancing. “I wanna join! Please, please, pleeease!”
“Hell yeah, Pinkie in the house!” Rainbow high-fived her. Pouring a small amount of tequila into three clear fancy plastic cups, Rainbow raised hers and said, “To Applejack! The strongest, bravest woman I know!”
Pinkie slung an arm around my shoulders and clinked our cups together. “To Jackie!”
We threw them back and even though it burned, it was a welcome sensation.
“What are you guys doing over here?”
We turned around to see Twilight and Fluttershy walking over.
“Shots!” Rainbow supplied an answer, “want one?”
“Oh, no thank you,” Fluttershy said, “I’m the designated driver tonight. Don’t mind me though, enjoy yourselves.”
“I’ll take one,” Twilight chimed in.
“Oh my God,” I rolled my eyes. “I don’t thin-”
“Ladies and gentlemen!” The DJ’s speaker came on, “if I can direct your attention to the bride and groom, the cutting of the cake will happen momentarily!”
There were excited shouts throughout the crowd at the announcement.
Automatically my eyes landed on the former love of my life in all her beautiful glory and the pain Rainbow was helping to distract me from came back full force.
Rarity, along with Fancy Pants, made their way to the cake table and I watched them laugh and mess around as they tried to find the best way to hold the knife together.
“Oh Applejack, can you believe that next week will be our one year anniversary? I can hardly believe it myself, the time has gone by so fast!”
We’re out in the orchard, under one of the apple trees. You’re laying on your back on top the quilt you brought and I’m next to you on my stomach, curling a lock of your hair around my fingers.
“One year since I worked up the nerve to ask you out. It’s been the best year of my life. I never thought someone like you would have any interest in someone like me.”
“But darling, why wouldn’t I? You’re strong, independent, intelligent, family-oriented, and not to mention one of the most gorgeous women I’ve ever laid eyes on. We don’t always see eye-to-eye, but our differences bring us closer together.”
I grin and peck your cheek. “You’re too good to me, Rares. I’d be lost without you.”
“Likewise, my love.”
I sit up and rummage through the mostly empty picnic basket I brought with us. “I have a surprise for you and I’ve been practicin’ for a while to get it just right, so I hope you like it.”
You sit up next to me and scoot closer. “I’m sure I’ll love it, whatever it may be.”
I pull a tin out of the basket and hand it to you. I watch as you carefully take the lid off and I say, “it’s nothin’ fancy, I just remembered you talkin’ about how much y’miss the ones your mom made when you were little, so I’ve been workin’ on creatin’ the perfect recipe.”
You smile as you look over the mini raspberry tarts nestled among the wax paper before taking one out and inspecting it.
“You remembered me talking about these? I haven’t had one in years!” You take a bite and moan a bit, a sign that you definitely liked them.
“This is delectable, Applejack!” You take another bigger bite, “and they taste almost exactly how my mother used to make them. This was so thoughtful, darling! Thank you so much!”
You lean forward and kiss me, the taste of fruit and powdered sugar on your lips.
“Mmmm, sweet,” I say and lick my own lips, giving you a wink as you watch my tongue work.
“Here,” you pick up another tart, and hold it up to my mouth. Taking the cue, I take a bite out of it, making sure to keep eye contact with you.
“Delicious,” I swallow, “but not as delicious as you.”
Capturing your red-tinted lips with mine, I weave a hand into your hair and pull you closer. You grasp at the front of my shirt as you melt into me, the homemade treat far out of our minds as I slowly lay you down.
The crowd of guests laughed as Rarity smashed the piece of cake she was holding into Fancy’s face. Rarity giggled and tried to move out of the way before her husband retaliated.
Turning away from the scene I raise my glass to Rainbow. “Screw it, pour me another one, RD.”
I see Twilight and Fluttershy give me sad looks out of the corner of my eye. “Actually, make it a double.”
More than a few shots later, we were all sitting at one of the satin-covered tables.
“My feet are killing me. These high heels are classy and stylish, but they do little in the way of comfort.” Twilight reached down and rubbed the sides of her sore feet.
“That’s why I ditched mine as soon as the wedding was over,” Rainbow said, showing off her bare toes, “I don’t even know where they are.”
“Hope you find them before the nights over, Rarity’ll have your hide if you lose them expensive shoes,” I replied before biting into one of the hors d’oeuvres I had grabbed before we sat down.
“Who cares? I’m pretty sure my uncomfortable heels are the last thing on her mind.” Looking around the reception hall, Rainbow added, “Man, could this music be any more boring? We need something we can dance to, not this posh department store soundtrack.”
Pinkie suddenly gasped before yelling, “Idea! I’ll be right back,” and took off in the crowd. A couple minutes later she came back with a big grin.
“Pinkie, what did you do?” Twilight asked suspiciously.
“I miiiiight’ve bribed the DJ with twenty dollars to play a song or three! Dashie was right, this music is no fun, not many people are out there shaking their groove thang and I couldn’t let that happen!”
“Aww, yeah! Count on Pinkie to liven up any party!”
I finished the couple of snacks on my plate in time for the song to change to the well known Cha-Cha Slide.
“Ohhh!” Pinkie Pie exclaimed, jumping up, “this is one of my songs! C’mon guys, let’s go!”
Twilight kicked off her shoes before we followed, forming a small group in the center of the dance floor.
Copying the lyrics in the song, we all danced together, apart from Twilight who was just as bad at dancing as always, even with the help of having the steps read out loud. We stayed close together, the alcohol in our systems causing our moves to be more loose and wild.
Swinging our hips and moving our feet, we bumped into each other and laughed, almost ignoring the words until the song called for us to get low.
“Watch this!” Rainbow called over the music before hiking her dress up a bit and starting her slow decent downwards.
“Are you watching, Applejack?” you ask.
We were at Twilight’s house. She had hosted a party at her place to celebrate Pinkie’s 23rd birthday. After a few long hours of games, food, and way too much alcohol, almost everyone had fallen asleep.
Rainbow was passed out on the couch across from us, Fluttershy had her head on the toilet upstairs, and Twilight and Pinkie had announced they were ‘going to bed’ before they ran up the stairs hand in hand.
That left you and I alone in the dim lights of the living room. Both of us had had too many drinks, and after falling over a couple of times, I’d managed to crawl into an armchair.
You were standing a few feet away from me, going through songs on your phone before you found one you liked before setting it on the coffee table.
“I’m watchin’, sugarcube.” I lean back against the comfortable material of the chair and focus my attention on you.
Smiling, you begin to sway. You kept your eyes shut as you get the feel for the beat, slowly adding in more sexy and sensual moves as the song went on.
You run your hands down your chest and over your perfect bottom, giving yourself a squeeze. Reaching up to your casual button-up blouse, you wink at me before starting to undo each button.
Moving closer with every roll of your hips, your shirt was open by the time you were at my chair.
A lacy black bra was revealed as you shrug the material off your shoulders.
Putting your hands on the armrests, you arch into me, your breasts rubbing against mine sweetly as you give me a deep kiss.
Taking my lower lip between your teeth, you suck, drawing a small moan from me.
Barely leaning back, you whispered, “you can touch me, darling. This isn’t a viewing only.” To drive the point home, you take one of your hands and pass it along my left breast, down my stomach and over my jean-clad thigh.
Humming along with the tune, you stand back up and turn around, swaying to the beat again as you grab the edges of your black skirt and take your time raising it up.
As the skirt lifted, you stop just short of showing your rear, holding it up just high enough to tease me.
You bend over a bit, gyrating your hips seductively. Remembering what you had told me, I lean forward and move the fabric out of my way, exposing your ass that was bouncing wonderfully in front of me.
You gasp as I smack your rear a couple of times before grabbing your thighs and pulling you closer so that I could bite your rear playfully.
You yelp at that and just as I was about to do it again, you started lowering down onto my lap.
I sit back, giving you the room to dance on me. You rock her body on mine hotly and I can feel my body heating up with every move.
I held up your skirt as your ass rubbed against my crotch so I could watch the show.
Wanting to tease you like you did to me, I position one of my legs between yours and lift up enough to cause you to grind yourself on my knee.
“Mmmm, Applejack my dear,” you moan, as your lap dance suddenly turned more into you rubbing your crotch on my thigh for relief, “touch me like I told you to.”
Reaching around to your front, I peppered your shoulder in kisses before dipping my fingers under the thin waistband of your undergarments, and finally touch you how I wanted.
As the first song Pinkie Pie had chosen died down and another came on, I shook my head and tried to get rid of the memories floating in my head.
Tears started sliding down my face as a barrage of other memories came to mind. Picnics in the park, romantic dates in the city, cozy evenings in watching movies.
Deciding it was too much, I turned around and made my way through the group of people who were also happy to see the change in music.
It was too loud, too crowded and too much. As much as I would’ve liked to enjoy the night with my friends, I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t keep celebrating that the love of my life had left me and moved on.
Walking towards the exit, I had just made it to the door when someone laid a hand on my arm.
It was Fluttershy. Meeting her sorrowful eyes tipped me over the edge and I began to cry in earnest.
She wrapped her arm around me and helped me to the garden outside and to the nearest bench. As soon as we sat down I draped myself over her and sobbed.
“It’s okay, Applejack. Let it out.” She ran a soothing hand up and down my back. “I know how much it must hurt, but you’ve been strong tonight and you don’t have to pretend anymore.”
I knew I was probably getting her dress wet with the amount of tears and drool I was producing, but I didn’t care, and I knew she didn’t either.
Weeping into her shoulder, we stayed like that until I felt like I couldn’t cry anymore. Keeping my head where it was at, I whispered, “I’ve had a year to get over her, but I can’t. She was the best thing to happen to me and she just threw me away like garbage.
“Did she even cry after she broke up with me? Did she lose sleep at night wonderin’ if she had made the right decision? Or did she just fall into Fancy’s arms without blinkin’ an eye? Every time I think I’m gettin’ over her, it’s like the pain comes back worse than before. I just can’t do it, Shy, I can’t pretend that I’m happy for her when I’m still pullin’ myself together.”
Fluttershy ran a hand over my hair.
“No one said heart breaks are easy, especially when you were together with someone for so long and it’s awful to think that they might not have cared for you like you did them. That’s the gamble of being in love. You either both win, or one of you loses. But you have me, and you have the others that will pick you back up when you fall down. You aren’t alone.”
Lifting my head, I wiped my face. “Thanks, Shy. For everythin’. You’re right, you and the girls have been there for me since day one and grateful for all the support.”
She smiled at me. “Of course. That’s what best friends are for. Are you feeling better? We could go back in, or sit here for a while longer, or I could drop you off at that hotel and let you have some time alone before I bring the others back.”
“I think I’m ready to go back to the room. I don’t wanna be here anymore. Plus I’m pretty sure I’m gettin’ blisters from these damn shoes. To be honest, I just wanna shower and go to bed.”
“Okay then, I’ll go get my car and drop you off. I told the others I’d be back in a while when I followed you, so they’re probably still dancing. I’ll be back in a minute.”
I nodded and watched her head out to the vast parking lot.
I reached down and took off my shoes, sighing in relief when my feet were free. Picking my heels up, I stood and stretched before starting down the stone pathway to the curb.
I had barely made it five feet when the door behind me opened and I heard my name called.
“Applejack.”
I froze. I knew that voice like the back of my hand. I had heard it a million times, whether it be in an angry way, a passionate way or a happy way.
Steeling myself, I turned around to see Rarity standing there in her beautiful white gown.
“Rarity,” I replied. She could probably see my red face and puffy eyes, but she didn’t comment.
“I… I just wanted to thank you for coming tonight. I thought I saw you leave through the door and didn’t want to miss you.”
“My pleasure,” I said stiffly, “I had a good time.” I could feel myself starting to get choked up.
She wrung her hands. “I’m glad to hear it. I know it must have been awkward for you, but I’m glad you came out.”
I had so much I wanted to say to her. About everything. How heartbroken I was after being dumped for a rich city man. How I wasted three years of my life building everything around her, for her. How hurt I was being asked to be a bridesmaid after only being ten months apart. How her standing there in that big wedding gown, married to someone that wasn’t me made my chest ache with pain. And most of all, how I still loved her, even though she had moved on.
Instead, I pasted a big fake smile on my face. “No, it w-wasn’t too bad. I wouldn’t’ve missed it f-for the world... You look gorgeous, by the way.”
I could hear Fluttershy’s vehicle pull up behind me.
“Oh, thank you so much, darling,” She smiled back just as falsely. “I should get back inside, I’m about to do the bouquet toss. Thank you again for coming all this way. I’ll see you when I get back from my honeymoon.”
“H-have a great time. Bye Rarity.”
“Goodbye Applejack.”
She smiled again before I watched her disappear back inside, taking my heart with her.
A few more tears fell as I made it to my friend’s car.
I looked back at the building one last time, took a shuttering breath, and left.
“I will always love you, Applejack, and no one will ever come between us. I promise.”
