Luna flew backwards off her feet, before she spun right back up and cut the griffin who knocked her over in half. Luna wore a simple set of mail armor under a vest of scaled armor. On her head was a cap of iron with a half plate to cover her eyes, cheeks and nose with a pair of rams horns that came out of its sides. She carried a simple, central grip roundshield with a straight double edged sword meant for chopping. However she was just as tired of conflict as her soldiers, and since Celestia was taken prisoner early in the war the entire weight of the war rested squarely on Luna’s shoulders.
Luna spun in place and cut another down before bashing a third in the face and stabbing him. That was the last she slew that day, or any day after. The griffins were brought into a retreat to regroup, however, Luna decided that regrouping wouldn’t be necessary for either side. Luna walked into her own camp, and approached the command tent. She looked over the map, finding that it had not changed. There was still a stalemate all along the border, in all places, and with no sign of any break in favor of either side, neither had there been for the past eight years. Both sides showed no weakness, up until now, Equestria was waning, and it wouldn’t last forever. The griffins would eventually hold out, and win. Luna couldn’t let that happen, but she didn’t see how she could stop the war by negotiations.
She rubbed her temples in thought, but still nothing came up. She felt a hand on her shoulder draw her attention, she turned to see one of the captains of her army. He wore a concerned look on his face.
“Princess, what troubles you?” He asks.
“Take a look.” She replies. “There is no end to this war in sight to come about with us surviving. And even if it does end with one side victorious it would cost almost the entire population of Equestria and it would still last numerous generations. The only immediate option is diplomacy and yet I cannot think of any offer I can make to gain peace.”
“Oh,” The captain says. “Is there any help I can provide?”
“No,” Luna tells him with a sad tone. “See to your troops. Let me handle my own problems.”
“Yes princess.” He says bowing.
Luna sits on her cot to think, it is several hours before she comes up with a solution. She doesn’t like the idea, but she realizes quickly that there may be little other choice.
Luna walked out to the Griffin camp in the early morning. She had her spear with her, but mounted near the head was a white flag, telling all that she came to negotiate. She was brought into the camp of ger tents for the Mongull soldiers, eventually she came to a larger tent, owned by their king. She let her spear be taken from her before entering the tent. She found the griffin king waiting for her.
“Princess Luna, you surprise me. To what do I owe the honor?” King Sharp Claw said to her.
“I’ve come to negotiate, you and I both know that this war has remained and will remain a stalemate for years. This cannot last else both of us will be facing crises. So I wish to speak for peace.”
“What are your demands?” He asks.
“Princess Celestia must be returned to the throne, all land you have taken from us must be returned and we will do the same regarding lands we have taken. My sister is to be given safe passage to Canterlot along with any and all prisoners of war you have taken, all prisoners of war we have taken will be returned to you.”
“You have thought these out well Princess Luna.” The griffin says after a short pause. “But this deal seems weighed in your favor, we cannot accept this. It must be evenly balanced or favoring us, you gain a royal, we demand that we receive something of equal value.”
Luna closed her eyes, this was hidden by her helm, she didn’t want to say this, but it had to be done. “If you agree to these terms, I will surrender my sword and my person, to you. Agree to these, then I will go with you to your homeland, and I will be anything you wish me to be.”
The griffin king was surprised by this, then turned to his advisors, who all nodded in agreement. They believed that it was a fair trade, and they would be in complete control of the one who caused them the most grief during the war. They could punish her severely for this, although it was ultimately up to the king. Who turned to face Luna again, “I accept.”
The paperwork was arranged and signed. If any violence occurred between any two armed forces units or personnel against the other side by any nation their lands would be forfeited to the defender’s authority and government. Neither side answered to the other. And no griffin carried authority over a citizen of Equestria and vise versa. Luna signed the pact, sealing her fate.
Luna was now walking through the capital city’s dungeon to where her sister was being held. She approached the cell behind the jailer, who opened it and let Celestia out. Celestia looked half starved and was covered in numerous bruises, she wore nothing more than a night gown of rough fabric that didn’t help with the cold whatsoever. She walked out weakly, and hugged Luna tightly once she was out, but she wasn’t aware of the terms.
“I’m glad to see you safe little sister.” She says holding her sister tightly. “How did you manage it?”
“It wasn’t pleasant.” Luna says with a melancholy tone. “Just go back to Canterlot and hold the country aloft.”
“What do you mean go, you’re coming too aren’t you?” Celestia says stepping away to see the almost depressed expression her sister supported.
“I... I’m not. It had to be done Celestia, I will see you again, someday. Until then, farewell.”
