Blazin Lights: (Episode 1) The Origin
Chapter 4: The Friendship Club
Previous ChapterNext ChapterOne day after high school, there was a letter in the mailbox on February 5, 2069. I thought it was junk mail at a first glance; not until my name was printed. There was no address on the envelope. Samantha thought that it was an early Valentines Day card. I opened it and saw a message from a new club at the high school.
“
Dear Lewis Lemmings,
Have you not made any friends since freshman year? Do you want to learn the right ways to make friends? You’re invited to join our first meeting after school on February 8. We’re located in the cafeteria.
Sincerely,
Jane Orrall (Founder of Friendship Club) “
She asked about the message I got in the mail. I explained that it was a group that helps students to be friendly to others. She encouraged me to go there, because last year there wasn’t any club that was similar to that. She didn’t want me to answer this instant. Three days after thinking about it, I decided to take a shot for this after-school meeting.
When I entered the cafeteria, there were six teenage kids who waited for me to show up. The one thing that seemed off was that there wasn’t an adult or anything.
“Hello there Lewis,” she walked toward me, then she gave me a handshake, “Welcome to the Friendship Club!”
“Are you the founder?” I asked.
“Yes I am,” she responded then said, “There’s supposed to be seven of us in here. That’s why we didn’t want you to get confused. Let’s introduce ourselves. Since we know your name, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?”
“I write music and collect vinyl records. I’m required to visit Samuel Ontario Nicholson Laboratories everyday. They don’t know where I came from yet, but he hopes there would be an answer someday.”
“Cool. My name’s Robert Carney. I mow the grass every week,” he said.
“Emily Lawrence. I draw cartoons just to pass some time,” she gave her greeting to me.
“I’m Ellie, but I don’t have a last name,” she said in an awkward manner.
Someone punched her arm to say her last name.
“Ow! Charleston. Ellie Charleston. What the heck did you do that for,” she yelled at her.
“Ellie know better,” she yelled back.
“Sorry about that. Her English hasn’t approved yet. By the way, her name’s Laura while mine’s Danny,” he said while she got stiff.
“I see. So y’all are best friends. Right?” I asked Jane.
“Kind of. We’re here because you’re related to us. You’re not alone. You will learn the right ways of friendship. It all starts next week. Anyways, that wraps up with our first meeting. Thanks for attending. We’ll meet again at the cafeteria.”
“Bye Lewis,” all five of her friends said.
“See you all later,” I said then left the cafeteria to go home.
A week later, there was a second meeting for the Friendship Club. I was looking forward to learn friendship for the first time.
“First off. What do you know about making friends?” Jane asked me to see if I knew something.
“Well, the only thing that I know is just talk to someone,” I answered her question.
“That’s it? Was that the only thing you’ve been taught?!” Jane asked with shock, then she said, “There are many ways to have friends. It’s friendship that’s missing.”
“I get it. Does it mean we focus on making friends and being social?”
“You’re right. We would teach lessons about friendship, and we would have fun for sure.”
“That’s awesome!”
Danny had turned on the projector, while Laura pulled the screen down.
“One of the ways to grow friendship are called the Elements of Harmony,” Jane said.
“Okay. What are the elements?” I asked.
“We’ll show you.”
She used a clicker to go to the next slide.
“The first Element of Harmony is kindness. Being kind to others can go a long way for all of us.”
“What do you mean by that?” I asked her.
“She means that being kind is the same thing as being nice to others,” Emily explained to me.
“Thanks Emily,” Jane complemented, then she said, “What I was saying is that if you’re nice to your friends and family, they would give you appreciation.”
“That makes sense,” I said in excitement.
“The second Element of Harmony is honesty. Honesty is about being truthful to one another. If you tell someone the truth over your actions, one can easily forgive you.”
I raised my hand, then she said, “Yes?”
“Can I guess an element please?” I asked her.
“Of course. Go on ahead.”
“Isn’t there an element called being generous?”
“That’s right! Generosity is another element of harmony.”
Jane went over the rest of the elements, while I took some notes. After that, she asked all of her friends to have a chat with me. She wanted to figure out if I could make a friend with the use of the elements. It was mainly a little social hall that she planned. I had to talk to one person at a time.
It was down to the point where me and Danny got along. Jane asked him on how it all went. He said that we had a few things in common. He also said that me and him were planning to see a movie. She was impressed with the results she had so far.
My next person I wanted to be friends with was Jane. The reason is that I’ve been wanting to know her for a little bit. She sort of has the same feeling with me though. I walked to Jane, then I sat down.
“Hey Jane. What’s up?” I asked her.
“Nothing much. How about you?” Jane replied.
“I heard that you’re wanting to get to know me. Is that right?”
“Indeed.”
“Let me ask you this. Why did you say that I’m related to all of you?”
“Because you’ve been wanting to learn about friendship. Even though we know all of the six elements, it means you can spread friendship for our school.”
I got confused on how she responded, so I said, “Okay? I thought we were talking about me being related.”
“Oh that’s right. It looks like I might have gotten lost with the subject. I said that because we are from the same area where you’re from.”
“Hold on a minute. Why did you...”
I looked at my watch to see that it was twenty minutes before five. It was quite surprising how much time had flown by. I didn’t want to rush through this meeting. I had to let Jane know that I had to be at Mr. Nicholson’s lab. She understood my reasons why, so she and her friends said goodbye to me before I left.
