Blue crept forward along the dimly lit alley as silently as one could with hooves on cobblestone. He approached the side of a window and cautiously peered inside, seeing three reindeer chatting casually around a small table with wooden mugs on it. The deer each had an odd little blue anthropoid creature floating next to them, like fairies with large solid midnight blue eyes, wearing heavy hats and coats. They were the ice sprites that most reindeer had at least one of, Blue had learned. They kind of had a symbiotic relationship with the reindeer, pampering them and gifting them their magic. Blue made a mental note to pay special attention to this delivery stag, as he now had a new lead on seeking his next objective. Velvet, a widely renowned (almost worshipped) citizen of Rein, was exactly the one he was looking for. Despite her popularity, she was surprisingly hard to find. She was somehow powerful, able to do things others of her kind could not. She was also distinctly darker than them, as if she had embraced some kind of forbidden power that changed her. Rumors said her source of power was a mysterious black grimoire that she carried with her. Either way, she had some kind of connection to otherworldly powers, which was where Blue came in.
He was an investigator of the paranormal. A skeptic with a keen eye for detail and an affinity for the more perilous and exotic kinds of supernatural phenomena. First thing was first, though. He needed to talk to Vicks and find out where Velvet lived. He had considered waiting outside to follow Vicks home, but with how civilized and similar to Equestrian cities Rein seemed, he figured finding his address would be trivial.
Closing his notebook, Blue yawned. He put it into his saddlebag and crawled into the large comfy bed where he slept quite soundly.
Blue spent the morning tracking down Vicks. As expected, it wasn't hard. The city had a pretty comprehensive mailing system, which made it even more surprising that Velvet herself was not easier to find. It was no matter, though, as he was used to this kind of work.
His efforts brought him to a row of buildings with no space between them, differentiated only by their various colors. He located number four and, finding a large, ornate metal knocker on the wooden door, used it to knock loudly three times. When Vicks opened the door, eyes squinting in the harsh light of day, he looked at Blue with confusion and a tilt of his head. "What're you?" he asked.
"Name's Blue, paranormal detective," Blue said automatically, before realizing just how Vicks had phrased his question. "I'm a pony. From Equestria."
The reindeer looked disgusted. "Pony? Equestria? Eugh..."
"Look. I'm just looking for Velvet, and I heard you know where she is. I'm here on orders from Princess Celestia herself to track down a dangerous unicorn, and I think Velvet knows where she is," Blue said.
Vicks' eyes widened a bit despite his likely hangover. "Oleander? Ah, hell..." he trailed off, then took a lengthy pause before continuing. "Okay, I'll tell you where to find Velvet. If there's one thing she talks about as much as herself, it's that damn unicorn Oleander. She might just hate her as much as she loves herself. I think she'll want to meet you. Anyway, she said she'd kill me if I ever told anyone where she lives, so you didn't hear it from me, got it?"
Blue nodded. "Of course," he said.
Vicks gave him directions that, unsurprisingly, started with leaving town. Velvet was apparently living in the ice caves of a nearby mountain. Blue thanked him and set out immediately, collecting his things from the inn and checking out.
The trek to the mountain was difficult, but luckily, the snow was not deep. Following a small branch off of the main road out of town, it was only about an hour before he found a landmark Vicks had mentioned. Strings of small white lights were strung across the top of each wall, and also ran down the middle of the ceiling, lighting the cave with a cheerful warm glow. Small evergreen trees were planted along the center as well, spaced evenly, forming a neat row. Small colorful decorations hung from the branches, from round glass baubles to dainty little figurines. Several ice sprites floated about, taking no notice of the pony, or just not caring. They seemed to be performing general maintenance, picking up fallen pine needles or straightening ornaments.
Just as Blue took a small step forward, he heard something behind him that froze the blood in his veins.

"I-I was sent here to track her down. I want to help you find her and keep her in check," he said, hoping she would buy his mostly true excuse.

Once he finished, she said nothing while she mentally chewed on the (hopefully new) information. They passed many more of the ice sprites during their walk, and he wondered just how many she had there. When she did finally speak, it was to change the subject.
