10. The Hardest Part (part one)

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Twilight woke up before Adagio did, as was often the case.

She quickly made her way to the bathroom, taking care not to wake up — or even look at — her roommate.

Once she got in the bathroom and locked the door she sat down on the toilet. Her morning routine didn’t seem important right now, so she just sat there. Thinking.

She didn’t know what to do. She could feel tears threatening to spill, but resolved herself to hold them back.

She felt awful after last night. She needed someone to talk to, but she didn’t know who.

She couldn’t tell Sunset about what she had been doing here. And if Adagio was right and Sunset did have a crush on her, she couldn’t really tell her about what happened with Adagio either.

Obviously she couldn’t talk to Adagio either. That would just be awkward.

Looking at her contacts list on her phone, she made her decision.

The phone rang a few times, before going to voicemail.

“Hi, you’ve reached Mi Amore Cadenza. I’m not here right now, so please leave a message after the naughty word!” Twilight pulled the phone away just as the beep started. The cheerfulness in Cadance’s voice had hurt almost as much as her not picking up.

She must still be asleep, Twilight realized. Tears started to fill her eyes as she desperately tried her last option.

“Please pick up,” Twilight pleaded with her phone, her voice cracking.

Twilight?” Sunset’s voice sounded like heaven right now, despite how confused and groggy it was.

“Sunset!” Twilight cried in relief. “Sorry, did I wake you?”

Sunset didn’t answer right away. “Twilight, are you crying?” she asked worriedly.

“Yes,” Twilight croaked, her tears now flowing freely.

What happened? Are you hurt?!” Sunset asked frantically.

“No, I’m not hurt. I just… I made some stupid choices.”

Sunset stayed quiet for a moment. “Oh. Okay… Do you want to talk about it?

“I…” Twilight opened and closed her mouth soundlessly a few times. “I can’t. I’m sorry Sunset, but I can’t tell you.”

Sunset sighed. “Okay, Twilight. But you have someone there you can talk to, right?” She paused for a moment. “I’m sure Adagio could help you.

Twilight chuckled humorlessly. “Adagio’s kind of the worst person for me to talk to about this.”

Oh.

“Sunset?” Twilight asked after a few moments of silence.

Sorry, it’s just… Whatever it was that happened, it has to do with her, doesn’t it?

Twilight brought her legs up to her chest. “Yeah, it does.”

Sunset sighed again. “Twi, you can tell me. I promise I won’t get mad or think any less of you.

“O-okay,” Twilight said, wiping away some of her tears.

Okay, what did she do?” Sunset asked.

Twilight groaned. “She didn’t do anything. It was all me. Just me and my stupid emotions and making stupid choices.”

Twilight,” Sunset said firmly. “You are not stupid. And neither are your emotions.

Twilight ground her teeth. “I can assure you Sunset, contrary to popular belief, I am a fucking idiot!”

Sunset audibly winced.

“Sorry,” Twilight said sheepishly.

Why don’t you just tell me what happened? Please?” Sunset asked calmly.

“Okay,” Twilight took a deep breath. “I kinda… fell for Adagio.” She bit her lip, waiting for Sunset’s response.

After a few moments of silence, Sunset spoke in a strained voice. “Go on.

“Okay. So, a while back, Adagio told me that she wasn’t interested in dating other women, despite being bi. And for some reason, I got it into my stupid head that had some kind of a shot with her anyway.”

Okay,” Sunset said slowly. “So what did you do that’s so stupid?

“I slept with her.” Twilight steeled her resolve and kept going. “To her it was just a one night thing, but I was expecting more. Even though I knew there couldn’t be anything more between us, I somehow got it into my stupid had that there could be. And now there's this awkward tension between us and I have no idea what to say or even do!”

Okay, that’s pretty bad,” Sunset winced. “Was she angry with you?

“No. She just seemed to feel guilty for having inadvertently led me on. It clearly didn’t affect her as much as it did me, though.” She bit her lip. “I don’t know if I can keep facing her every day. Let alone keep sleeping in the same room. God, it’s going to be so awkward.”

What if you just came back home?” Sunset asked slowly.

Twilight could hear the hint of pleading in Sunset’s voice. She chuckled. “I guess that would solve quite a few issues, huh?”

I’d certainly feel a lot better with you here,” Sunset agreed.

Now that she knew to look for it, Twilight could tell that the sincerity in Sunset’s voice offered more than just friendship. She felt another pang of guilt for having not noticed it before.

“Yeah. Yeah I think I’ll do that,” Twilight nodded. “If things between me and Dagi are going to be this tense, then there isn’t much reason for me to stay.”

Great!” Sunset’s relief showed through in her voice. “When do you think you’ll be able to come back?

“Well, I only have one other job lined up this week. But hopefully I’ll be able to cancel it and take a flight tonight.”

That would be fantastic,” Sunset said. Twilight could tell she was smiling and she realized that she hadn’t heard her smile in some time. “Do you want me to meet you at the airport?

Twilight giggled. “I’m afraid I’ll have to pass on that. You don’t have a car for my luggage. I’ll get Cadance and Shining to pick me up. I haven’t seen them since they got home this summer anyway.”

Right, good point,” Sunset laughed sheepishly. “Let me know when you get into town, though. We should meet up as soon as we can.

Twilight smiled. “Definitely.”

By the time Twilight left the bathroom, the house was still mostly silent. It seemed that the other girls were still asleep.

She did however find Broad in the kitchen.

Twilight steeled her nerves and went to talk to him.

“Hey Broad.”

“Hey, Twi. What’s up?” Broad said between bites of his sandwich.

“I, uhm… I wanted to take you up on your offer from last night,” Twilight said.

Broad looked up at her. “Uhh, refresh my memory?”

Twilight held back a sigh. “You offered to get me a flight back home whenever. A-and I want to leave now. Today if possible.”

Broad looked confused for a second, then shrugged it off. “Alright, no problem. I can get you a flight for today and cancel that one gig you had.”

He pulled out his phone and started tapping at it between bites of his food. To Twilight’s relief, he did not ask her what had happened or why she’d changed her mind.

She sat there quietly while he called up the producer for Twilight’s would be gig and told them she couldn’t make it due to personal issues.

After that, he got Twilight her flight ticket for that afternoon.

“I’m afraid I can’t drive you there myself, so you’ll have to take an Uber.” Broad said.

Twilight nodded. “That’s alright. Thanks so much for doing this.”

“Don’t mention it,” he said, smiling. “You should probably start packing.”

Twilight paled. “Oh. Right, of course.” She looked over her shoulder towards the room she shared with Adagio.

She stood up and slowly made her way back to the room. She could hear the shower running and a few quiet voices coming from the living room.

She slowly opened her door and breathed a sigh of relief when she saw that Adagio was not there.

She stuffed her belongings into her suitcase as quickly as she could. Once everything was in, she took out her phone.

She sent a message to Shining, asking him if he and Cadance could pick her up at the airport. She also sent a message to Sunset, letting her know when she’d be landing in Canterlot City.

Looking at the time, Twilight saw that If she left now, she’d have to wait at the airport for a couple of extra hours. However, if she waited here with Adagio it would be agonizing. With that in mind, she ordered a lift for as soon as possible.

She then took her suitcase and made her way into the living room.

Starry, Scarlet, Ocean, Broad and Olive were sitting there.

Starry looked up, taking notice of the suitcase.

“Twilight, you’re leaving?” she asked, catching the others’ attention.

Twilight smiled sadly. “Yeah. Uhm…” she hadn’t really thought this through. She didn’t want to talk about it right now, so she wracked her brain for an excuse. “Something came up. At home.” She paused awkwardly. “So, I guess this is goodbye.”

The group gave their heartfelt goodbyes, and Twilight gave them an awkward feeling wave in return.

“Adagio’s still in the shower, if you wanted to say goodbye to her too,” Ocean said.

Twilight bit her lip. “Yeah. Could you just tell her that I’ll be waiting outside for my lift?”

She gave another wave and goodbye, then left the house for the final time. She breathed in the fresh air, taking comfort in the fact that the second hardest part was now over.

Now she only needed to wait for the hardest part to get out of the shower.

A few minutes later, Twilight’s lift had not yet arrived, but she could hear some commotion from the house behind her.

The door opened, followed by Adagio’s voice.

“Twilight!”

Twilight turned around, seeing Adagio run up to her. Her hair was still wet and messy, and she hadn’t even put on her shoes.

Once she reached her, Adagio stopped and stood silently for a moment. Twilight couldn’t blame her. She didn’t know what to say either.

“You’re leaving,” Adagio said flatly.

Twilight nodded.

“They told me you said that something had come up at home. Is that true?”

Twilight shook her head. “No, I just said that so they wouldn’t ask questions.”

Adagio looked away. “It’s because of me, isn’t it?”

Twilight wrapped her arms around herself. “Well, yeah. But to be fair, you were the reason I stayed as long as I did, too.”

Adagio sighed, her shoulders slumping. “Twilight, I’m sorry about what happened. I should’ve known you wanted more than just casual sex.”

Twilight shook her head. “No, Dagi, it was my own fault. I knew what I wanted couldn’t happen, but I still went through with last night.” She looked away. “I was just being an idiot.”

“Twilight, please don’t call yourself that,” Adagio said softly.

Twilight chuckled. “It’s kinda hard not to.”

Adagio just frowned. “I’m really gonna miss you, Twi.”

Twilight blushed, looking down. “I’m gonna miss you, too.”

“Is it okay if I give you a hug?” Adagio asked, looking a little sheepish.

Twilight nodded. “Yeah, I’d really like that.”

Adagio smiled and pulled her into a crushing embrace. Twilight returned the hug, relishing in it’s warmth.

When Adagio pulled away, Twilight could swear she saw her quickly wipe at her eye.

“Hey,” Adagio said, her voice regaining some of her usual confidence. “If you ever feel like it in the future, you can always give me a call, okay?”

Twilight smiled. “I’d like that, but… We’ll see.”

They stood there in awkward silence. Twilight looked down the road to see if her lift was coming, while Adagio tapped a rhythm on her leg.

“Soo,” Adagio said. “What are you gonna do when you get home?”

Twilight chuckled. “I don’t even know. I’m going to hang out with Sunset, at least.”

Adagio smirked at her. “Oh yeah? Gonna run straight into the arms of the next girl in line, huh?”

Twilight frowned at her. “It’s not like that. And I definitely wouldn’t do that to her.”

Adagio chuckled. “Oh c’mon, I’m sure she’d love to be able to protect her sweet little crush from the big mean girl who hurt her.”

Twilight crossed her arms. “It’s not like that!” she repeated. “Although, I will admit that she is very protective of me, so you’re not far off the mark.”

Adagio held her hands up defensively. “Hey, I’m just teasing, alright. I didn’t mean anything by it. But seriously, are you gonna date her or what?”

Twilight wrapped her arms around herself, looking away. “I have to admit, I’d be really nice to have someone like that to comfort me. But I don’t know if that would be fair to her.”

Adagio cocked her head in confusion. “What do you mean?”

Twilight blushed in embarrassment. “I don’t want her to feel like she’s just my rebound.”

Adagio shrugged. “Sounds to me like your overthinking this.”

Twilight gave a small giggle. “I suppose that’s possible.”

She heard a car come up the driveway and turned to see a car that matched her lift’s description.

“Well, that’s my ride,” she said. “Bye, Adagio.”

Adagio smiled at her. “See ya around, Sparky.”

Twilight greeted the driver and got in the car. As it left the driveway, she watched Adagio head back into the house.

She sighed. Well, that’s the hardest part over, at least.

Author's Note

Okay, so this isn't really a full chapter, at least not by my standards, but i just felt so bad about not posting anything that I decided to post what I had now.

I'm going to have some more time to write over the next few days, so I'm hoping to get the rest of this chapter (and the story, barring some last minute addition epilogue) done by next weekend.
