Spike walked through the town of Ponyville doing as he usually did. Letting his mind wander. Ever since Spike became a teenage dragon, his mind always wandered. Where was his mind wandering off to this time? Nowhere in particular. Normally he would be thinking about what the next Power Ponies comic would entail, but this time he had nothing. He just kept zoning in and out of life until he bumped into a colt with a grey coat and darker grey mane. The colt was fairly tall, about the height of an average stallion.
“Sorry.” Spike said with a bit of nerves revealing themselves.
“It's alright.” The grey colt said. “I was pretty distracted, so I didn't see you.”
“That's the first time, in a long time that I've been able to finish a sentence to another pony.” Spike mumbled to himself.
“Name's Rumble. What's yours?” The grey colt said.
“Spike.” Spike replied.
“Well Spike, I've gotta get goin. I've got some peepin to do.”
“Peeping? What's that?”
“You don't know? I thought all teenage males knew.”
“Not me.”
“Well, I suppose you should know. Wouldn't want people getting the wrong idea about you, now would we?”
“What does that mean?”
“Don't worry about it. Just follow me.”
Spike and Rumble walked all the way from the edge of Ponyvill to the beach, not really talking a lot along the way. Apart from some small talk.
“Well here we are.” Rumble said with slight nervousness in his voice.
“What are we doing at the beach?” Spike questioned.
“You see those mares over there?”
“Yeah. What about them? Are they hurt or something? If so, we should probably go help them instead of watching them.”
“Man you sure are clueless aren't you? Look, we're here to watch them.”
“Watch them do what?”
“I don't know.” Rumble sighed and muttered to himself.”
“What was that?”
“Nothing. Don't worry about it. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the view.”
“Look as much fun as it sounds to sit around and look at random mares all day, I've gotta get back home. Twilight probably needs my help with more meaningless tasks that she finds important.”
“Twilight? Is that the librarian?”
“Yeah. She's basically my sister, but technically my mom...because she hatched me with magic...?” Spike said trailing off.
“Whatever, anyways I'll see you later Rumble.”
“...Spike.” Rumble said as Spike started to walk home.
“Yes?”
“Do you wanna hang out again sometime? Maybe, with more fun activities instead of this?”
“Sure. Maybe tomorrow at noon?”
“Ok, sure. Where do you want to meet up at?”
“Come by the library.”
“Ok, see ya”
“Bye”
“Hey Twilight. I'm home.” Spike called out.
“There you are Spike. I was starting to worry.” Twilight said, with a bit of worry in her voice.
“Twilight I was gone for 15 minutes longer than planned. It's not that bad.”
“Spike do you not realize how bad that is. It's 15 whole minutes. That's 15 times 1 minute.”
“Whatever. Look do you need anything, or can I go to my room?” Spike said with a bit of anger in his voice.
“Now that I know you're safe, I'm okay. So yes you may go to your room.”
“Cool.” Spike said walking to his room. “...Hey Twilight?”
“Yes Spike?”
“Do...would...may I go out tomorrow at noon?” Spike said, with clear uncertainty in his voice.
“Whatever for?”
“I made a new friend today and he's really nice. A little weird, but he's very friendly.”
“I don't know Spike. What if he finds out? Remember what happened back in Canterlot?”
“Twilight. Ponyvill is a lot more accepting than Canterlot. If they can put up with Pinkie, then they can put up with anything.”
“Well you can't be too certain. Can you...”
“Actually, yes you can. You're doing a good job of showing that right now.”
“I don't know Spike. You sure you just can't stay here and help me solve differential exponents, or maybe we can rearrange the book shelves a few more times?”
“Please Twilight. I never get to go out with any friends. You always go out with your friends.”
“Fine, but you must keep your diary here.”
“It's not a diary. It's a book for remembering stuff.”
“That 'book' is what got you in trouble in the first place. And why haven't you written that nasty word off of it yet? Doesn't it hurt to look at that word?”
“This is my Book of Remembrance. Everything written in this book is important. Even the hurtful ones. You always say that you want me to be careful about who I tell. Well that word will remind me not to get to comfortable with ponies. Isn't that what you want?”
“Spike are you implying that you think I want you to be afraid of ponies?”
“No need to imply. I'm saying exactly what's on my mind. You always do this. Ever since I told you. You've been trying to 'protect' me. Well the only thing you've done is fuck me over, and make me shy and more afraid of ponies than Fluttershy is.” Spike started yelling. “I'm so afraid of other ponies that I'm surprised that I was even able to talk to Rumble today. I don't know what it was about him but I felt like there was something different about him as well. But that's not the point. The point is that it doesn't matter if I'm gay or not. I still can have friends. Friends that aren't yours. Now leave me the fuck alone.”
“S...Spike...” Twilight started sobbing.
“Twilight...I'm sorry. It's just...ever since we moved to Ponyville I've been acting as if I'm gonna be treated the same way I was in Canterlot. I know for a fact that the ponies here are friendly. But I'm still afraid. I didn't mean to put all of my problems onto you, but I've finally found someone who I can talk to. It hasn't been that way for years. Please...can I hang out with him tomorrow.”
“What's his name...” Twilight said, drying the tears from her eyes.”
“Rumble.”
“Rumble? That's Thunderlane's brother. What in Equestria is he doing here...? I suppose since his brother is a Wonderbolt, then he can be trusted...right?”
“I don't know, but I'm tired, so I'm going to bed. Good night. And I'm sorry for yelling at you.”
“It's okay. I get I've been pretty hard to live with, but I just don't want you to be hurt again. I maybe your sister, but I hatched you. So that makes me your mom...to a degree. And mother's worry.”
“I know. Goodnight Twilight.”
“Goodnight Spike.”
The following day wasn't filled with too much excitement up to Rumble and Spike's appointed meeting time.
*Ding Dong*
“Hello? Oh it's you. Rumble correct?” Twilight said.
“Yes that's right. Is Spike here? Rumble asked.
“One moment.” Twilight said before yelling for Spike. “Spike...Rumble's here.”
“Coming.” Spike called from up stairs.
“So you ready to go?” Rumble asked.
“Sure am. See ya Twilight.”
“Goodbye Spike...Please be back by 5” Twilight said with a bit of nervousness in her voice.
After the full 5 hours were up. Rumble and Spike were almost back at the library. They were recounting everything they did today, and how much fun they had.
“And dude did you see the look on her face when I smacked her butt?” Rumble said in a fit of giggles.
“Yeah...” Spike said sounding weirded out at first but then made himself laugh with his next thought. “But I didn't get too good of a look at it because I was to busy laughing on the ground after she punched you in the face.”
“I'll admit, that was pretty funny.” Rumble agreed.
“Well, I guess we're here.” Spike said with a bit of disappointment in his voice.
“Yeah...I guess we are.” Rumble said following Spike's disappointed tone soon after realizing that they were, in fact, back at the library.
Twilight, checking to see if the two boys had gotten back yet, looked out the window and saw Spike looking down at the ground in disappointment. Curious and a little angry on why he was upset, she opened the window slightly and listened.
“Hey, Spike.”
“Yeah.” Spike said still disappointed.
“Why don't we hang out some more tomorrow?”
“I don't know if Twilight will let me. It was hard enough for me to convince her. The only reason why she trusts you now is because you're Thunderlane's younger brother.”
“Don't bring up that...pony...around me ever again.” Soarin snapped, quite loudly in fact.
Spike was taken back by this. He didn't understand why the meer mention of his brother's name got his so snappy.
“I'm...I'm...sorry.” Spike whimpered in fear.
Twilight, still listening in, was about ready to rush downstairs and tear Rumble a new one, when Thunderlane realized what he just did. He immediately apologized.
“Oh no. What did I do? I'm so sorry Spike. I didn't mean to snap. It's just...I...look. Me and my brother had a falling out a few weeks ago. Told me that if I can't be like a normal teenage colt, then I should just move away. That's why I'm here. The town here is much quieter and it's a nice place to start a new.”
“Do you have a place to stay?”
“No I'm afraid not. I've been trying to save up money by getting a job, but that hasn't been going very well.”
Twilight decided she had enough. Her mother instincts were kicking in.
“How could Thunderlane kick his own brother out?” Twilight said to herself. “Hmmm”
Twilight closed the window for about 5 minutes and came up with a plan. Since Spike's new friend was falling on hardships, she could probably figure out a way for him to have a place to live. Not for free of course. After she came up with her plan, she opened up the door to greet Spike, when she saw something she didn't expect. When she opened the door, she saw Rumble and Spike hugging. Spike had the biggest blush of his life, spread across his cheeks, while Rumble was crying.
“Ummm hello boys.” Twilight said.
Hearing this Rumble threw himself off Spike and regained his composure.
“Ahem. Hello Twilight.” Rumble said as if the events that just transpired did not happen. “I brought Spike home on time but we were just talking right here the past five minutes.”
“That's fine. Spike seems to be home safe without a scratch on him. So I'm fine with that.”
Twilight then looked down at Spike to see the blush still spread across Spike's face.
“Well Spike,” Rumble said, “I'd better get home. Wouldn't want Thunderlane to worry now. See ya later dude.”
“Bye...Rumble.” Spike said. Worrying about how his friend was gonna survive without a place to live.
“Rumble...” Twilight said as Rumble was walking to who knows where.
“Yes, Twilight?”
“You don't need to be all high and mighty. I heard what you and Spike were talking about, and I want to help out a little.”
“Wait what?” Both Spike and Rumble said simultaneously.
“You...heard...all that?” Rumble asked for clarification.
“Yeah and I don't know exactly why your brother kicked you out, but you seem like a nice pony so...I'm going to let you stay here.”
“Really?” Spike and Rumble both said simultaneously.
“Yes. You are the first friend that Spike has had. Well first friend that doesn't include all of mine. So I suppose I can let you stay here, but not for free. And since you had no luck getting a job. You are going to help Spike with his chores.”
“Really?” Both Rumble and Spike, once again, said in unison.
“Yes, and since there are two of you doing Spike's chores. Everything should be completed at around noon, considering you two stay on track with the chores. Once you two are done. Let me know if you will be leaving, and you can go hang out until five. That work for you two?”
“It sure does. This will be so much fun. Not only did I get to make a new friend today, now I get to see him all the time? This is perfect. Thank you so much Twilight. And of course, thank you too Spike. This was the best day I've ever had.”
Rumble wastes no time entering the library once Twilight invited him inside. Even though Rumble was still happy, something was swimming around in Spike's head.
“Pssst, hey, Twilight.” Spike whispered.
“Yes Spike?” Twilight replied.
“Where is Rumble going to sleep? There's only two beds in the house and one is yours and one is mine.”
“Well...I guess he'll have to sleep with you Spike.” Twilight said with a mischievous smile and suggestive tone in her voice, topping it all off with a wink.
Hearing this Spike's jaw dropped and a blush spread across his face. Twilight seeing him embarrassed decided to tease Spike a little more.
“Ooooo, I think my little Spikey-Wikey has a crush on his new friend.”
“Do not.” Spike said, with his face growing even more red.
“Really? You sure are showing the signs of having a crush. You know, overly concerned for a friend, over happy that said friend will be sharing a bed with you, and not even being able to hear his name without blushing more.”
“Shut up, Twilight!” Spike said with rage. “I do not want to share a bed with him.”
“Oh? Then where ever will Rumble sleep. I suppose we could keep him outside, but I'm not sure that Rumble will...”
“No no, I didn't mean that. I'm perfectly fine sharing a bed with him.”
“I don't know. I mean unless you really, really wanted to share a bed with him. I don't think I could have you share a bed with him.” Twilight said, still with that teasing tone in her voice.” It wouldn't be fair to you after all.”
“No no no. It's alright. I want to share a bed with him. It could be fun.” Spike said quickly almost stuttering, while blushing even harder.
“It's okay Spike. I'm just horsing around. He's obviously not gonna sleep in the same bed with you. He can sleep on the couch until we can get him a bed. I just wanted to see how badly you liked him. Now I'm almost tempted to have you two sleep together. It would be cute after all. Oh and I could take so many pictures...”
“Twilight stop!” Spike snapped.
“Oh sorry. I got a little to into that didn't I?”
“Hey, Mrs. Sparkle I was just wondering. Where am I gonna sleep?”
“Spike and I were just talking about that. I was thinking the couch until we could get a bed for you, but Spikey here seems to want you to sleep in the same bed as him. Also you can just call me Twilight.”
“Really...Spike?” Rumble said raising one eyebrow curiously.”
“No, no no no” Spike said feeling his cheeks turn red again after they finally returned to their normal colors. “I was just saying that we didn't have a place for you to sleep because there are only two beds in the house. And Twilight here seems to think I meant that we could share a bed.”
“Well, I don't really care where I sleep, but I'll go ahead and sleep on the couch as to not be a burden to Spike's sleep. I tend to toss and turn in the night. Wouldn't want to wake Spike up in the middle of the night with my night movements.”
"Oh, okay." Spike said with a slight disappointed tone.
Author's Note
So a couple things I want to get out of the way. First off with Rumble. I know that he switches between this roudy teenager to nice and polite. That is intentional. I'll be going a little more in depth onto why that is, in the next part of the story. I was going to make this all one part, but it's 2 am and I've been typing for 5 hours straight so I'm a little tired. Hope you all enjoy this fanfiction. Hopefully I will get it complete soon. Also thank you to Jake The Army Guy for pointing out a crucial mistake that I made. Don't know how I made that mistake but it is now fixed.
