The Fifth Holy Grail War: A Pony's Perspective
Duking it out in the Cafeteria
Previous ChapterOf all the things she would experience at a human high school, a fight wasn’t one of them. Sure she had seen a little rough housing before in schools, but she had always been a model student. She’d never be caught dead harming a single stone of a place of learning. Which is why she couldn’t help but wince as Adagio ducked and her blast of magic shattered a piece of the wall.
“Sorry, school!” She couldn’t help but shout before teleporting out of the way of a sonic scream.
The fight itself had started hectic. That was mostly due to all the students around. Something that had caused Caster and Sunset to butt heads with the rest, which also helped the Sirens get an edge in the beginning of the fight. Thankfully Twilight had teleported all the students in the cafeteria outside. Hopefully no one would see it. Caster’s sleeping spell would make sure that none of the school body would know, at least.
It was still a bit too cramped to do a lot of fighting here. Which meant that Caster and Rider had to be careful when they attacked. This gave the Sirens ample opportunity to push in the early game. Constant siren screams had blasted the two servants back every time they had gotten close.
Rin had been shooting her gems at the trio. She had succeeded in getting a few hits in. It was why Adagio’s shoulder was singed or why Sonata had a mark on her stomach but it was all superficial. They were tougher than they thought they’d be. Then again, this didn’t surprise Twilight. Everyone from her world was rather hardy. Rainbow’s constant crashes were a good example of that.
Caster blasted Adagio. The siren was sent reeling back. Her momentum stopped when one of the other’s caught her. Just as she was about to capitalize on this, Sonata released a high pitched cry right at Caster. She screamed in pain, holding her ears as she fell on her back. In the meanwhile, Aria used her voice to blast away a knife and a gem thrown by Shirou and Rin respectively.
“That’s it,” Adagio got to her feet, “Together.”
Twilight could instantly tell what they were trying to do. She saw their jewels glowing as they took in a deep breath. She summoned a forcefield in front of the group just in time. The trio of sirens let out a loud scream as their energies combined, slamming into the forcefield. Twilight wasn’t sure if it was the sound or the ever beating presence against her shield that made her flinch. Maybe both.
“Whelp this has been fun,” Rider laughed, “Just like old times.”
“Yeah?” Sunset glared at him, “Then what do you suggest?”
“I got just the thing,” Rider clapped and summoned his hippogriff.
Aria’s eyes widened and she stopped her assault, “Oh you’ve got to be-”
Rider gripped the fur on the side of his hippogriff just as it charged. Due to his class, he sped on right through their assault. It did hurt, and his hippogriff was going to be miffed with him for a bit, but he knew that it would last less then a second. The animal smashed into the sirens and grabbed them with its talons, smashing them through the window. The trio were let go instantly as they plummeted right to the ground.
The reason why is he knew he’d have to dodge another barrage of sound music. Which he did, weaving through the air as he rode atop his beast. He twirled around another sonic blast before turning to go for a charge.
Adagio gritted her teeth. She only had a second to think of something. This whole venture was a disaster. She’d have to smack Aria for starting a fight like she did. She pulled out a little gem and threw it at the ground just as Rider was about to reach them. The three sirens were surrounded by a red energy that cause the Rider to pull up from his strike. The moment he turned to look at where they stood, they were gone.
Rider couldn’t help but scoff, “Figures. They always turned tail the moment they lost momentum. No fun there.”
Seeing that his quarry was gone, Rider steered his hippogryph back inside. He dismissed his ride, content with a job well done. His master and her friends seemed to be alright from where he was standing. He gave them a wave and a bright smile.
“Whelp, the bad guys are gone.” He put his hands on his hips, “I believe that’s another point for the good guys.”
Unfortunately, he didn’t receive the praise he was looking for. Instead he came across a scene of the mages and Caster muttering to themselves. All huddled together and low in voice so a normal person wouldn’t hear them. A bit odd, but given their worried tone, he wondered if they were doing this unconsciously. Still, he could hear them from here but he wanted to get closer still.
“-It’s impossible,” Sunset grumbled, “How could Sirens be here?”
“Maybe they’re natives?” Twilight put in.
“I very much doubt it,” Caster said, huffing. She no doubt was sore about falling to their attack earlier, “I would have sensed such a connection. No. Their magic felt similar to yours.”
“But how could they have…” Twilight said before her eyes widened, “Oh… Starswirl the Bearded.”
“Oh…” Sunset slapped her face, “Great.”
“Who are you talking about?” Rin asked, her voice raised.
“He was the greatest unicorn to have ever lived,” Twilight said, a bit of gushing pride escaped her lips. “Most spells can be traced back to his genius. Why, even Princess Celestia was trained by him.”
“And that’s impressive, right?” Sakura idly asked.
“Yes,” Sunset said, although gritting her teeth as she did so. “Impressive. Of course, he also was the one who made the portal we used to get to this world. No doubt he created others like it before.”
“So he might have sent them here as punishment,” Twilight said.
“Yeah, well it’s come to rip our tails off now.” Sunset griped.
“Oh that’s great,” Rin threw up her hands, “So now we have to go and find some mythical sirens from another world.”
“And honestly,” Sunset said, “This was a pretty sloppy job of theirs. They probably weren’t expecting a fight. Next time won’t be so easy.”
“Neither were we,” Rin said, crossing her arms. “Next time will be the last time.”
“I have to agree with the girl,” Caster said, curling her hands into fists. “I was taken by surprise once. It won’t happen again.”
Sunset smirked, “I trust you on that.”
“Can we just send them back to your world?” Shirou asked, “I’m sure they can stand trial on your side.”
“It won’t be simple,” Twilight said, “But it might be doable.”
“I say we just get rid of them and be done with it,” Rin said.
“Hey,” Rider finally jumped into the conversation. “The hero who just sent the sirens packing is talking here. A little appreciation would be nice.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.” Sakura went over and patted his head, “There, there. Good boy. Thank you for all your hard work.”
“Hehehe,” Rider blushed, leaning into her soft hand. “All in a day’s work for my master.”
“I think I’m going to have to talk to a certain priest about this,” Rin grumbled and shook her head, “This Grail War is getting out of hand.”
“Who are you talking about?” Sunset asked.
“There’s an overseer of the Holy Grail War,” Rin explained, “It’s his job to make sure that the Holy Grail War goes as it should.”
“I’ll pass on that,” Sunset said, “I don’t think I’d get along with a judgey sorta guy.”
“Oh you definitely are a rule breaker, alright.” Rin narrowed her eyes, “I’ll be sure to knock you out of this war myself.”
Sunset laughed, “I’d like to see you try. Still,” she looked around them. “What are we-”
“I’ll take care of it,” Caster said, “They won’t remember a thing.”
“I’ll go with you, Tohsaka.” Shirou said, “I have a few questions of my own about this war.”
“Same here,” Twilight said, “Well that goes without saying but maybe I can get him to stop this war while I’m at it.”
Rin pinched the bridge of her nose, “Oh this’ll be fun.”
“Maybe I-” Sakura started.
“No,” Rin said firmly, “You are to go home and stay there.”
Sakura looked like she wanted to argue but thought better of it. She simply bowed her head and nodded, “Alright.”
“Don’t worry,” Rider said, smiling although it didn’t reach his eyes. Clearly he was a bit annoyed by Rin snapping at his master, “I’ll make sure she stays safe.”
“See that you do,” Rin said, firmly.

“CURSE THEM!”
Adagio’s voice shook the entire building to its core. Thankfully the abandoned factory had firm foundations. Otherwise both Aria and Sonata would be dodging debris by now. They watched their sister fume and rage. Stomping on the ground.
Aria sighed and shook her head, “What did you expect? They had several mages and two of these ‘servants’. We rushed into something we shouldn’t have.”
“We could have done better,” Adagio said, “That was embarrassing.”
“I dunno,” Sonata shrugged, “We’re all alive and well. I don’t see why it’s an issue.”
“They know about us now,” Adagio said, stopping in front of her. “Which means they’ll be prepared for us. We can’t rush in at them like that again. We need to play it smart.”
“How smart?” Aria quirked an eyebrow, “Actually pretty smart or your kind of ‘smart’.”
“Why you…” Adagio growled, preparing to… well, do something.
“Well, well, well.” A familiar and arrogant voice said, clapping as he walked up to them. The familiar outline of Gilgamesh made their way over to the three sirens. “You certainly know how to make me laugh, you three.”
“Why are you here?” Aria said, narrowing her eyes.
“I wanted to check up on you three,” Gilgamesh said, “And what I’m hearing displeases me. You rushed into combat like mere bulls. I expected better from such ancient creatures. Then again, perhaps I shouldn’t have. A lot of you acted the same way back in my time.”
“It was just one misstep,” Adagio said, “This means nothing.”
“It means I’m disappointed,” Gilgamesh narrowed his eyes and the air grew thick with tension. Not even Adagio dared to speak with how much pressure seemed to be put on her with his eyes alone, “I want nothing more than to be entertained. That is why I gave you ‘gifts’ in order to keep you alive. You’ve already wasted them. Tell me. Should I keep throwing my gifts at three fools who can’t even beat a group of teenagers.”
“Says the man who’s hiding,” Aria grumbled, before she ducked. A sword narrowly missed her head.
Behind Gilgamesh was a series of golden portals. Just a half a dozen with different weapons sticking out of them. His gaze was still bored but Adagio picked up on the slight twitch from one eye.
“Be silent,” he said, “Monsters do not talk back to their betters.”
“Well we’re not monsters,” Sonata said, being the only one not so frightened right now. Adagio envied her obliviousness sometimes, “We’re Sirens. I know some people like to call us monsters but we’re just trying to have fun, is all. It's not our fault people are so sensitive.”
Gilgamesh stared at her for a moment. Then he dispelled his weapons. A sigh of relief escaped all three sirens' lips, even Sonata. He simply chuckled.
“Do you now?” Gilgamesh said, “Perhaps you can offer some more ‘fun’ for me later. I do so hope you can do better on your second try.”
Author's Note
Well it's been over four years now. Time sure flies. I'm honestly sorry for taking so long to get this done. I've been sitting on this particular chapter for months now. Life has been... hard these last few years and I've been working on a book as well. So the combination meant I put aside a lot of my fanfics. Hopefully I can get more into them now, although college might make that process slow. Unsure if I think this chapter is good but I wanted to get something out to show this story isn't abandoned. Hope you all enjoy it and take care.
