The Dragon Festival
Spike flew through the halls of the castle looking for Twilight, a letter clutched tightly in his claw.
“Twilight!” He called. “Hey Twilight!”
“Over here Spike.” Twilight leaned her head out of the study. “What in the world is the matter?” She quickly ducked as Spike flew over her head and into the room, landing on the floor before her.
“Check it out.” He held the letter up for her excitedly.
“Okay, okay.” Twilight took the letter with her magic and opened it. Her eyes perked with interest as she read. “Wow, an invitation from Ember to the… first annual dragon festival?” She lowered the letter. “What is that?”
“It’s something she’s been talking about doing for awhile now.” Spike explained. “It’s going to be a chance for dragon’s to come together and do something that doesn’t involve life threatening competion. I’ve been helping her brainstorm through the mail for a few months now.”
“Well that sounds great.” Twilight praised. “What does she have planned?”
“There’s going to be lots of food, games, dancing… all kinds of fun stuff.” He jumped up and took back the invitation. “She’s even reaching out to dragons that have migrated from the dragon lands.”
“It sounds like a great time.” Twilight smiled. “I hope it goes well. This could be a big step for all dragons.”
“Sure will be.” Spike agreed. “The festival is next week; Ember will be here in three days to get me. She wants me to be there early to help finalize the preparations.”
“Okay, thanks for giving me a heads up.” Twilight went to her desk to write herself a note.
“I’m going to run into town and pick up some things for the trip.” Spike said as he took to the air again. “Be back in a bit.” He waved and flew out of the room. Heading out into town with his bag and a purse of bits, he made a beeline for Rarity’s shop. He landed before the door and pushed it open, the small bell over the doorframe ringing in response. “Rarity?” He called.
“Spiky.” Rarity said cheerily as she came to check the door. “How are you?”
“Great.” Spike flew over to her. “Listen, I’m going to be going on a trip to the dragon lands next week and I was wondering if you had a really nice gemstone that I could give to Ember as a gift.”
“Oh, certainly.” Rarity put down the bolts of fabric she was carrying and headed for the supply room. “What’s the occasion, darling?”
“The dragons are having their first festival.” Spike explained as he followed. “It’s kind of like a fair.”
“Oh my, how delightful.” Rarity tried to imagine the affair. “Well, if the gift is for a celebration then I have a lovely, multi-colored opal that would be perfect.” She went to her gem cabinet and began pulling out drawers. “Ah, here we are.” She used her magic to lift the stone and send it Spike’s way. It was swirled with a heavy mix of yellow, orange, purple and black.
“Oh wow.” Spike took hold of the stone. “It’s perfect, I’m sure it tastes as great as it looks.” He said as he placed it in his bag.
“Well I’m sure she will find it… uh… scrumptious.” Rarity said with a quaint laugh.
“Thanks Rarity, I’ll see you before I leave.” With a wave, Spike hurried along to his next stop. Spike raced through Ponyville to attend to everything else on his mental checklist; he stopped by Sugar Cube Corner to order a batch of sapphire studded cupcakes from Pinkie Pie, bought a new traveling bag and got his claws done at the spa. Arriving back home a few hours later, he dropped off his things in his room and returned to Twilight who was relaxing with lunch and a book.
“Hi Spike.” Twilight lowered her book as he sat beside her. “Get everything wrapped up already?”
“Yep.” Spike said proudly. “Everything is ready to go for when Ember gets here. Time to play the waiting game.” He kicked his legs up and laced his claws behind his head as he settled. As they sat there he soon began to fidget, he started tapping his claws and let out a long breath. “Ugh! I forgot how much I hate waiting!” He fell backwards and laid his claws over his eyes as Twilight snickered from behind her book.
Over the next two days Spike did his best to contain his excitement and focus on the day to day. He tended to his usual chores and made sure to inform all his friends about his trip to the upcoming festival. Come the third day, during the bustling afternoon, a familiar blue form fell from the sky and landed hard before Twilight’s castle. Ember glanced over at the startled ponies walking the road and offered a wave.
“Greetings, ponies.” She said loudly. After waving back timidly the town folk hurried along their way. Ember turned her attention to Twilight’s front door and gave it a series of sound knocks.
“Hi Ember.” Spike greeted as he opened the door.
“Hey Spike.”
“Good to see you again.” He hugged her waist.
“You too.” She patted his head.
“Hey, you didn’t flinch that time.” Spike noted wryly.
“Don’t push your luck.” She warned.
“Kidding.” Spike held his claws up innocently. “Come on in.” Spike flew aside and let her enter, shutting the door behind them.
“Hello Ember.” Twilight hailed as she came downstairs. “I hope the flight here was good.”
“Weather’s nice.” Ember flashed her a thumb up. “Smooth flying all the way.” She went to meet her at the bottom of the steps. “Actually, I did want to talk to you before we headed out.”
“Really, what about?” Twilight asked.
“Well, this whole festival is going to be really important and I want it to go off with as few hitches as possible.” Ember began. “You may not be a dragon, but you are the princess of friendship; so I was thinking it would be great if you made an appearance. You know, just to really nail the spirit of the event.”
“That’s a great idea.” Spike noted as he joined them.
“Oh.” Twilight was a bit surprised at the request. “Well, it would certainly be an honor to help bring friendship and comradery to the dragons.” She thought for a moment. “If you could give me a few days to sort things out at the school, I’d be happy to come.”
“Great, thanks Twilight.” Ember smiled. “Having you there will be a big plus; and if the dragons get out of line, you can zap’em.”
“Ha ha… well, let’s just hope it doesn’t come to that.” Twilight laughed nervously, not entirely certain how serious she was being.
Ember turned her attention to Spike. “You ready to get going?”
“Yeah, let me just grab my bag.” Spike flew upstairs to his room to retrieve his things while Twilight walked with Ember back to the door. As soon as Spike returned they were seen off by Twilight and started down the road. As they were about to take off they heard an unknown voice call after them.
“Excuse me!?”
Spike and Ember turned to see a dragon running up to them. The tall, lean newcomer hurried over and took several large breaths as he caught up with them.
“Uh, hi.” Ember said.
“Hello.” He smiled and extended his claw. “You’re Ember right? The dragon lord?”
“Yeah.” Ember said slowly as she took his claw.
“Sorry, this must seem odd.” He apologized. “My name is Gale.”
Ember looked him over, the forest green dragon was not one she had ever seen in the dragon lands before. “Haven’t seen you in any of the dragon circles.” She noted.
“Well… no, I suppose you wouldn’t have.” He said with a cheerful smile. “I was born and raised outside the dragon lands.”
“Really?” Spike said in surprise. “Me too.” He held his claw out. “I’m Spike.”
“Nice to meet you, Spike.” Gale shook his claw heartily, shaking Spike’s whole body along with it. “Anyway, I had heard from some traveling dragons that you were hosting a festival.”
“Yeah, that’s right.” Ember confirmed.
“Well they said it was by invitation only.” Gale noted. “Which is why I’m glad I ran into you. Would it be okay if I came too?”
“Sure.” Ember nodded. “The more dragons the better, the whole goal is to promote more friendship and cooperation for dragon kind; and you’re… certainly friendly.” She admitted with a light laugh. “We’re actually on our way to the dragon lands now if you want to tag along.”
“Really, that would be great.” Gale said with eager eyes.
“Let’s get moving then.” Ember spread her wings and took to the sky.
Spike and Gale followed suit and the three of them ascended into the clouds. As they glided along, Spike flew up to Gale’s side.
“So Gale, you said you were born outside the dragon lands. Where are you from?” Spike asked.
“Oh, well I’m from the northern mountains.” Gale informed. “This is my first time leaving them.”
“Are there other dragons up there with you?” Spike continued.
“I see some now and again, but mostly they’re just passing through.”
“Sounds kind of lonely.” Spike admitted. “But it was a while before I got to see other dragons too. Then I met Ember after being summoned by her father for the contest to replace him as dragon lord.”
“Speaking of which.” Ember cut in as she flew closer. “Didn’t you receive the summon?”
“Me?” Gale thought a moment. “I don’t know, I didn’t get anything.”
“It isn’t a written invitation.” Ember said. “Your scales should have been glowing.”
“Oh.” Gale ran his claw along his beak. “I was wondering what that was about… I thought I was sick or something.”
“Geez.” Ember said in disbelief. “You’re even more clueless about dragon culture than Spike.” She laughed. “Didn’t think that was possible.”
“Hey.” Spike protested. “I was raised around ponies, I have an excuse.”
“That’s why I wanted to come to this festival.” Gale said. “Now I can really learn more about dragon culture.”
“Well don’t expect us to go easy on you.” Ember elbowed him.
They traveled until dark before finding a secluded cliff along the coast to stay for the night. Spike set up a fire for them and began rummaging through his bag. Gale went to the edge and looked out over the ocean.
“The air off the ocean is so fresh.” Gale noted as he took a deep breath.
“Sure is.” Spike flew over and handed him one of the cupcakes he brought. “Here you go.”
“Thanks.” Gale took it and noticed the gems in the frosting.
Spike flew over to Ember and offered her the opal. “Here you go Ember, I got you a gift straight from Rarity’s special stock of gems.”
“Wow, thanks Spike.” Ember immediately took a bite out of it as if it were an apple. “Mm, good stuff.” She praised through her mouthful. “You know your gems.”
“You… eat gems?” Gale asked as he pulled a sapphire from his cupcake.
“Uh, yeah.” Spike said. “All dragons do.”
“We do?” Gale popped the sapphire in his mouth and chewed. “Gee… it’s really… crunchy.”
“Wow.” Ember chuckled.
“You’ve really never eaten a gemstone before?” Spike asked in near shock.
“Is… that a bad thing?” Gale asked, seemingly genuinely worried he’d offended them.
“Not bad…” Spike began. “Just weird.”
“Well the cupcake part is good.” Gale said as he took a bite of the confection.
The trio relaxed and chatted for near an hour before Spike opted to get his blanket out and get some sleep. Ember sat closer to the fire and Gale sat beside her.
“So, what are the dragon lands like?” He asked.
“Hot.” Ember said plainly. “Lots of rocks and lava.”
“Sounds… nice?” He eyed her questioningly.
Ember laughed. “For dragons, yes. But I’m hoping to make it something that other creatures can experience. That’s what this festival is a stepping stone towards.”
“Really?”
“Yep.” Ember nodded surely. “Dragons have finally dipped their claws into this whole ‘friendship’ thing but we need more exposure. We need to interact with other creatures in bigger and more open settings; I want dragons to see that making new friends is a positive thing and other creatures to be able to look at dragons without fear.”
“That’s an amazing goal.” Gale commended.
“Yeah well… it’s easy to just say out loud.” Ember shrugged. “Dragons are stubborn and proud, I had to see that in myself before I could realize just what an obstacle it is. Not all dragons are completely on board with my ideas.”
“The hardest part about change is initiating it.” Gale said. “It’s the point where things are most new and frightening. After you get past that hump though, the rest is usually smooth.”
Ember smiled and nodded. “Here’s hoping.” She stood. “We should get some rest, after we cross the ocean tomorrow we’ll be in the dragon lands.”
“Okay, goodnight Ember.” Gale said with a bright smile.
“You really are a weird dragon.” Ember noted with a giggle. “Night, Gale.”
The following morning the three dragons continued their journey across the sea to the volcanic dragon lands. Gale marveled at the vast span of rolling blue around them, excitedly pointing out any marine life he saw break the surface. It was a long flight, but with the wind at their backs they eventually saw the opposite shore form on the horizon. Gale could feel the heat begin to increase as they neared the dragon lands. Once inland, Ember led them eastward to where she had decided to organize the festival. Despite the jagged landscape, she had found a massive clearing with enough free space to set up a gathering. Within the bounds of the clearing, rudimentary tents of widely ranging colors stood tall; dragons were setting up makeshift tables and booths made out of carved stone and rocks and a huge slab of quartz sat adjacent to a flat outcropping.
“Whoa.” Spike said as he took it all in. “Looking good so far.”
“All things considered.” Ember said. “Getting ahold of materials was harder than I thought it would be, turns out most places don’t deliver to the dragon lands. So, we’re making due with what we’ve got.” They landed in the center of the activity and Gale began looking around and waving to the passing dragons. Ember went to him and put her claw on his shoulder. “Listen Gale, you’re a lot more… enthusiastic than most dragons; just stick with us for the time being.”
“Oh, okay.” Gale nodded. “Should I try to be more intense?” He tried to form a hard look on his face.
Ember snorted and shook her head. “No.” She reached up and physically wiped the look from his face. “Be yourself, just take it slow. You might be a bit much for the dragons around here.”
“Gotcha.” He said with his typical smile.
“Okay Spike.” Ember clapped her claws together. “I’ve got most the basic festival stuff down; but since you go to stuff like this all the time in Ponyville and Canterlot, I’m looking to you to help fine tune everything for dragons.”
“Sure thing.” Spike flew up into the air. “Why don’t you show me what you’ve got so far and we’ll go from there.”
Ember led them around the grounds, showcasing the existing games and events she had planned. Spike took everything into consideration and began suggesting some additions and alterations that would create more variety; putting his own dragon themed twists on activities he saw ponies enjoying at the fairs back home. Ember listened intently and once they were finished she began relaying instructions to the dragons working on site. At some point during this process, Gale spied an older dragon using his claws to carve large rocks into bowls. He wandered over and extended his claw.
“Hi, I’m Gale.” He greeted cheerfully. The dragon looked up from his work with a raised brow, not bothering to return the gesture. “Uh, what are you making?” He asked.
“Pyres so we can have light for the night.” The dragon answered as he returned to his work.
“I see.” Gale nodded. “Are you looking forward to the festival, I certainly am. I can’t wait to experience an actual dragon event.
The dragon again looked up with a smirk. “You’re not from around here, are you?”
“No.” Gale shook his head. “This is my first time in the dragon lands. Any advice for a newcomer?
“Yeah. Keep your head low, kid.” The dragon said with a short laugh.
“Oh.” Gale slouched and craned his neck downward. “Like this? Is this a dragon thing?”
The dragon looked at him incredulously. “Were you dropped as an egg?”
“Huh?” Gale eyed him in confusion.
“Hey.” Ember landed beside him, observing the position his was in. “What in the world are you doing, stand up.” She pulled him upright.
“I was just saying hello.” Gale informed.
“Is that what that was?” She grinned and punched his shoulder. “Come on, there’s still some daylight left and we could use an extra pair of claws.”
“I’d be happy to help.”
“Great, come on.” Ember took to the air and Gale followed.
They spent the remaining daylight hours helping out around the grounds. The dragon’s reactions to the ever cheerful Gale ran the gambit from sheer confusion to begrudging acceptance. Still, even the most negative response to his attitude wasn’t enough to derail his enthusiasm, which was something that Ember found refreshing. As night drew near and the work ceased for the day, Ember invited Gale to stay with her and Spike as she was hesitant to leave him alone in the dragon lands. Her cave, located near the peak of the tallest mountain, offered more than enough space for them.
“Wow.” Gale said as they stood at the massive entrance.
“Yeah.” Spike concurred. “It’s a lot bigger than I would have thought.”
“Well since my father stepped down as dragon lord, he decided he wanted to travel the world.” Ember explained as she walked past them. “So he left me the cave.” She waved them along. “Come on in.” Spike and Gale followed as Ember spit fire at the torches along the walls to bring light to the interior. “Make yourselves at home, I’ll be right back.” She flew into the recesses of the cave.
“Thanks.” Spike found a remote spot to lay his bag. He fell from the air onto his butt and let out an exhausted sigh. “Long day.”
“Exciting though.” Gale sat down and crossed his legs.
“So what do you think of the dragon lands so far?” Spike asked. “Is it what you imagined it would be?”
“I didn’t even know what to imagine in the first place.” Gale scooped up a claw full of soil and rock. “I know that it may seem bleak to some, but every place has its own beauty if you’re willing to see it.”
“The first time I came here was a big change from what I was used to.” Spike said as he recalled his original journey. “But even though I was raised around ponies… I don’t know, the dragon in me just felt right at home.”
“Well I can’t wait to see more.” Gale smiled with excited eyes.
“Boy, you never run out of energy do ya?” Spike laughed as he fell backwards and spread out.
“Glad to hear it.” Ember said as she flew back to them, hefting two smooth slabs over her head. “We’ve got a lot of work to do tomorrow.” She dropped the two slabs beside each other. “I brought out the spare beds for you guys.”
“Thanks Ember.” Spike immediately jumped on one, running his claw up and down the surface. “Ooh, obsidian.”
“Get some rest, we’re heading out early.” Ember promised with a wicked smile. “You don’t want me to be the one to wake you.” She flew back into the rear of the cave to her own bed. Gale curled up on the second bed and the activity of the day caught up to them as they soon fell asleep.
The next day was as active as Ember had promised. A team of larger dragons had come in to begin setting up the heavier elements of the decorum and, following Spike’s prior suggestions, the updates were being made to the existing set ups. The rough draft of yesterday began to come together as the day wore on; to Ember’s delight things really started to look like an honest to goodness fairground. In spite of the hard labor, Gale seemed to be having a fantastic time. Ember found herself always amused by his awkwardness and even though he wasn’t particularly strong or coordinated, he was ever earnest and dedicated in the things he did. As the day came to an end, the three of them sat on the recently finished oratory platform for the opening and closing ceremony. Ember was between the two and put an arm around each of them.
“Looking good boys, great job.” She praised.
“Have to admit, now that it’s ready it looks amazing.” Spike looked over the scene with wonder. “I can’t wait for Twilight to see this.”
“How about you Gale?” Ember pulled him into her. “Hanging in there?”
“Absolutely.” Gale smiled. “I’m glad I could help.”
“Well you seem to be fitting in just fine.” Ember noted. “Looks like you’re dragon land certified now.” She patted their backs and stood. “Tomorrow is opening day, final prep will be before sunrise and hopefully we should see visitors arriving not long after.” She spread her arms out and stretched her lithe body to its fullest. “Ready to call it a day?”
“Heh, I could pass out right here.” Spike chortled.
“Me too.” Gale admitted.
“Wow, we must have worked hard if we wore you out?” Ember glanced back at him with a smile. The trio returned to her cave and had little trouble getting to sleep with nary a word spoken before they headed for their beds.
Up before the sun, they returned to the grounds and were greeted by the smells of gem based snacks being whipped up in ovens. They landed before one of the stalls and were waved over by the dragon working behind it.
“Dragon lord Ember.” She hailed. “Just finished the first batch, care to try?” She produced a tray of emerald studded loaves of sourdough bread.
“Don’t mind if I do.” Ember took one and had a massive bite. She smiled approvingly and gave her a thumbs up. “Excellent work.” She muttered through her mouthful.
“Thank you.” She lowered her head humbly.
“Try some.” Ember handed the other half to Gale as they started walking.
“Sure.” He eagerly took the loaf but hesitated at the emeralds.
“Hold on a sec.” Spike flew over and expertly picked the gems from the bread. “Don’t want these babies going to waste.” He popped them in his mouth.
“Thanks.” Gale saluted to him with the loaf and put the rest of it in his mouth.
They made a round of the entire site as Ember made her final checks with all the dragons working the festival. The sun began to crest over the horizon and the morning sky became dotted with the forms of approaching dragons. The initial two hours saw nearly four dozen dragons show up and begin exploring the grounds. With the concept being so new, things were slow at first but as they settled into the experience it began to liven up. By the third hour, Ember decided it was time to speak and officially welcome everyone. She made her way to the large platform and let out a mighty roar. The activity halted and the dragons began to assemble before her.
“I just wanted to take a moment to welcome you all to the first annual dragon festival!” The Dragons clamored in response. “Just to be clear, this isn’t about being the best, the fastest or the strongest; this is about coming together and celebrating all things dragon. Some of you call the dragon lands your home, some of you are returning from far away… and for some it may even be your first time. But we are all dragons, no matter how far apart we may be at times. Enjoy the food, enjoy the games, enjoy the music… and… well, just don’t hurt each other too much in the process. Let’s make this an event to remember!” She raised her fist to the air and the dragons roared in response. As the crowd disbanded and returned to the festival she jumped back down where Spike and Gale were waiting.
“Well said.” Gale applauded.
“Thanks.” Ember rubbed her claws together. “Now that all the formalities are over, how about we get in on the action too?”
“Now you’re talking.” Spike hovered in the air anxiously.
Finally able to enjoy the fruit of their labor they began joining in the festivities. Spike made sure to sample all the food. The bubbly Gale introduced himself to every dragon he came across and Ember tried her claw at all the games. As more and more dragons showed up some of the bigger events began to take place. Crowds gathered for the boulder lift where the strongest got to show off their raw power by hefting massive stones over their heads. The precision fire shoot was a big hit where dragons lined up at the chance to test their skill at hitting thrown rocks with their flame at set distances. Ember and Gale took part in the three winged race where dragons had their opposite wings bound and attempted to fly together using the cooperated lift of one wing apiece. Come the late afternoon, Spike went in search for them as he saw a familiar craft in the sky.
“Hey Ember!” Spike called as he darted over to them. “Twilight’s here.”
“Oh, great.” Ember looked up and saw the balloon in the distance. “Let’s go.”
The balloon touched down just outside the festival grounds and Twilight hopped out to secure it with rope. She heard Spike’s voice call her name and looked over to see the three of them heading over.
“Hi Spike.” She hugged him as he flew into her hooves. “Sorry I’m a little late.” She apologized as Ember and Gale made it over.
“No problem, things have been going great.” Ember informed. “By the way, this is Gale, we met him in Ponyville.”
“Oh, well hello.” Twilight extended her hoof to him.
“Hi, nice to meet you.” Gale shook her hoof.
“You… were in Ponyville?” She asked, having never seen him around before.
“Uh... yeah, I had gotten word about this festival and was just passing through on my way. Fortunately I ran into Ember and Spike, they were nice enough to let me travel with them.”
“Woo hoo!” Their conversation was interrupted as Pinkie leapt from the basket. “Hi everyone!”
“Pinkie Pie?” Spike said in surprise. “You came too?”
“Sorry, I hope it’s alright.” Twilight looked to Ember. “She overheard me talking about it to Rarity.”
“Sure, the more the merrier.” Ember shrugged it off.
“Thanks.” Pinkie bounded over to Twilight. “There was no way I was going to miss the first official dragon party.”
“Well it’s even livelier than we could have hoped.” Spike took his familiar spot on Twilight back.
“Well, everything except the dancefloor.” Ember noted. “The band isn’t exactly killing it out there.
“Oh?” Pinkie grinned. “You’re in luck then, I brought a secret weapon that I knew would really bring the party. She hurried back over to the basket of the balloon and reached down, pulling up the perpetually shaded DJ Pon3.
“Who is that?” Ember asked.
“This is DJ Pon3, the hottest DJ in all of Equestria.” Pinkie proudly promoted. “You want music? She’s your mare.”
“Okay, let’s see what she’s got.” Ember nodded, fairly intrigued with the mysterious musician. Pinkie lifted her headset and relayed the plan; with an easygoing nod, DJ Pon3 hopped out of the basket and adjusted her shades. Reaching back in, she hefted out two large, rolling cases. Ember led them all into the grounds and over towards the dancefloor where her existing band continued to play. She flew up to the stage and called their attention. “Okay guys, take five.” She thought for a moment. “If fact, take all of them.” She thumbed for them to step down. “Okay, all yours.” She gestured to the stage.
DJ Pon3 wheeled her cases up and onto the stage. She popped the locks on one and it instantly unfolded into her turntable and front speakers. She repeated the process for the second and it unfolded into a massive subwoofer. Once hooked up she paused as she found herself holding an electrical cord with nowhere to plug it into, without a word she slowly returned to the balloon and came back a few minutes later with a portable generator. She plugged her equipment in and stretched her legs as she stood before the turntable. Whipping out a record she set it in place and smiled as the speakers came to life. The vibrant music instantly caught the attention of the entire area and dragons began to gather around to see what was going on. Pinkie needed no invitation to run onto the floor and start dancing.
“Ha, alright!” Spike flew out to join her and began dancing in the air at her side.
“That does look like fun.” Gale admitted as hurried out. Slowly but surely, other dragons joined in and within minutes the whole floor was filled.
“Well color me impressed.” Ember let out an amazed laugh.
As the day turned to night the activity died down significantly. Under the quieter atmosphere, Spike showed Twilight and Pinkie around leaving Ember and Gale to relax under one of the tall, stone pyres.
“I think I’m more exhausted today than from yesterday.” Gale chuckled.
“Work hard, play hard.” Ember said with smile.
“This has been so much fun.” He looked over at her. “And it’s been even better being able to share it with you.”
Ember flustered greatly. “Oh, well… yeah. I mean, it’s definitely been fun having you here too.” She laughed nervously and rubbed the back of her head. “I’m… glad I ran into you.” She felt her cheeks warm under his cheerful gaze. “So anyway.” She stood and quickly turned her eyes elsewhere. “How about we go find Spike and the others.”
“Sure.” Gale hopped up as well. “I’m a little hungry, I’d like to grab one more snack before everything wraps up.”
“Good idea.” Ember said soundly.
The rest of the night went smoothly and as the crowd dwindled the vendors packed up for the night and readied things for the next day. Ember gladly offered to let Twilight, Pinkie and DJ Pon3 crash at her place as well and they headed there as the hour grew late. As everyone found a spot to settle for the night, Twilight stepped out to pen a letter to Princess Celestia about the event. She found Ember sitting just outside the entrance looking up at the stars in thought.
“Ember.” Twilight called her attention.
“Oh, hi Twilight.”
“Everything okay?”
“Yeah… yeah.” She nodded. “Just coming down from the day I guess." A thoughtful laugh escaped her. "You know, going into this I kept my expectations low just in case. But it went even better than my best predictions.”
“I’m glad, I could tell you were nervous. Spike was too.”
“Gale said that the beginning was the hardest part.” She recalled her conversation with him. “But he was right, now that all the worry about how things might go or could go is out of the way… it’s all downhill now.”
“I don’t mean to pry but, you two seemed to be having a pretty good time together.”
“Yeah.” Ember let out a long breath. “He’s… nice. Like literally, he gives Spike a run for his money in the nicety department.” She laughed.
“That’s saying something.” Twilight giggled.
Ember sat forward and sighed. “Look, I don’t talk about this stuff much… or ever for that matter, but I feel like I can trust you with it.”
“That means a lot.” Twilight smiled. “Whatever you want to say, I’ll keep it between us.”
“I think… I think I like him.” Ember said with sideways smile. “Like… like him.”
“That’s great. He certainly seems like a really sweet guy.”
“He’s nothing like other dragons, that’s for sure.” Ember noted. “But, that’s kind of what I like about him the most… which feels weird to say.”
“Tell you what.” Twilight got a little closer. “I’ll keep Spike and Pinkie with me tomorrow and you two can spend the whole day together and, well, you can see how you feel.”
“I’d… like that.” Ember slowly nodded. “Thanks.”
“That’s what friends do.” Twilight said simply. Feeling more confident in the matter, Ember headed back into the cave while Twilight pulled out her scroll and pen.
The next morning the ensemble returned to the festival grounds and before anything else, Ember offered Twilight the chance to speak to the crowds. As before, she called them to attention with a roar and gestured for Twilight to come up on the platform.
“Hello.” Twilight waved. “My name is Twilight Sparkle. As the princess of friendship I want to express how honored I am to have been invited here and to have the opportunity to share in your celebration. I know that ponies and dragons are separated by much, but you all have been so welcoming to me and my friends that I can already see that gap beginning to close. Thank you all for sharing your home, your culture and your time with me.” She bowed and the dragons roared, she shook a bit and her mane frizzled but she was told that was the reaction she was looking for.
“Nice.” Ember clapped as Twilight stepped down from the platform. “Thank you for doing that.”
“It was a pleasure.” She fixed her mane with a smile.
“Alright, let’s keep this party going.” Pinkie looped her leg over Twilight’s shoulder.
“Spike, why don’t you come with us?” Twilight asked.
“Sure.” Spike landed on her back again. “Let’s get some food first.”
“Sounds like a plan.” Twilight began leading them off.
Ember glanced over at Gale. “Well, looks like it’s just us. What would you like to do first?”
Gale scratched his chin in thought. “Oh, I wanted to try the rock carving. I’d like to make a souvenir to take home with me.”
“Rock carving it is.”
Ember, having been groomed to be strong and fierce by her father, found herself letting a deal of her natural tendencies go in order to keep up with Gale’s almost childlike enthusiasm. She found being around him not unlike shedding a suit of armor, feeling lighter and unrestricted in her activity. They spent the day eating snacks, joking and playing games like a couple of long lost childhood friends. Eventually catching up with Spike, Twilight and Pinkie, the five of them reconvened and shared the events of their day. Pinkie showed off her trove of prizes from the game booths and Gale proudly displayed the impressive dragon sculpture he had carved. Time flew by and as the sky grew dark, the dragons began lighting the pyres and the entire festival was soon covered by a warm glow. The stars began to come out and feeling a mood change, Pinkie hurried up to DJ Pon3 and lifted her headset to whisper in her ear. Nodding in agreement, she pulled her record and swapped it out. The music changed to a soft, electric rhythm and some enthusiastic dragon couples headed out onto the dance floor to enjoy a slow dance. Pinkie swept up an idling bachelor and pulled him out onto the floor. She laid her hooves in his claws and set her cheek to him; the confused dragon shrugged it off and went along for the ride.
Gale slowly approached Ember and Twilight. With a timid cough he held his claw out. “Ember… would... you like to dance?”
Ember hesitated at the request but Twilight surreptitiously pushed her closer to him with her wing. She took his claw and nodded. “Sure, why not.” As they headed off, Spike flew up to Twilight and held his claw out much the same.
“Can’t let them have all the fun.” He grinned.
“Definitely not.” Twilight smiled and took his claw as he led her onto the floor.
Gale walked Ember to the center of the dancefloor and took her claws in his as they started to dance. After an awkward start they fell into rhythm with each other and Ember chuckled lightly.
“You’re not half bad.” She commended.
“Thanks.” Gale smiled down at her.
“You know, as much of an oddball as you are… I’ve had a pretty wonderful time spending the festival with you.”
“I know the feeling.” Gale admitted.
Ember smiled and laid her head against his chest. “I guess I can officially say that the first annual dragon festival is a success.”
“This whole trip has been even better than I imagined.” Gale noted as he laughed to himself in retrospective thought. “I knew Pharynx was being ridiculous with all the worrying.” He felt her release his claws and looked down to see her glaring up at him. “Uh…I mean…”
“Thorax!” Ember barely managed to whisper.
“I…” He fell into a panicked stutter.
Ember took his wrist and dragged him off the dance floor, pulling him behind the semi-circle of decorated boulders that accented the area. She swung him around and in his spinning he reverted back to his true form.
“Are you kidding me!?” Ember stamped her foot. “What in the world is this!?”
“Hold on Ember.” Thorax held his hooves up. “There’s a good explanation for all this, I promise.”
“Oh there had better be!” She pointed her finger at him. “Or I’m going to see how fireproof you really are!”
“Okay, I’m getting that you’re angry but that seems…”
“Thorax!” She growled.
He let out a disheartened sigh and lowered his head. “Well… I’ve asked you more than once if I could come visit you in the dragon lands and you always said you were busy. I got a letter from Spike talking about this festival and how he was going to travel with you to be a part of it. I thought that it would be a great chance to come see you and finally get to see the dragon lands and learn about dragon culture. Spike said it was dragons only so I… thought if I took the form of a dragon and just happened to run into you, I could get the chance to come.”
Ember let out an exhausted groan and laid her claw over her eyes. “So, let me get this straight. You thought pretending to be a dragon, making up some ridiculous backstory for yourself and lying to me and Spike was a good idea?”
“Well when you put it like that… no.”
“Wow.” Ember placed her claws on her hips and looked at the ground. “I don't even have words for how mad I am."
“I’m sorry, Ember.” Thorax said earnestly. “I obviously didn’t think this all the way through.”
“You think!?” She threw her arms out in frustration.
“Hey.” Spike’s voice came from around the corner. “Everything okay? You just disappeared and…” He flew around and stopped. “Thorax?”
“I think you mean Gale.” Ember toned.
“Uh, hi… Spike.” Thorax waved lightly.
Spike glanced back and forth between them. “Seriously?”
“Yeah.” Thorax admitted shamefully.
“Oh wow, it all makes sense now.” Spike said as he reached an epiphany. “I knew there couldn’t possibly be a dragon that didn’t like the taste of gems.” He said as he slammed his fist into his opposite claw.
“Really Spike!?” Ember shouted. “That’s your takeaway from this?”
“Ember…” Thorax tried to approach.
“Don’t!” She held her claw out to stop him. “Just don’t.” Letting out a short, frustrated roar she spread her wings and flew away.
“Spike?” Twilight came around as well and went wide eyed as she beheld Thorax. “Thorax, what are you…” She pieced together the situation by the looks on their faces. “Oh, oh my.” She recalled her conversation with Ember the night before. “Where’s Ember?”
“She just took off.” Spike pointed to the sky. Before they could do anything, Thorax flew off after her. “Should we go after them?” He asked.
“No.” Twilight said after a long pause. “They… need to talk about this alone.”
Thorax flew over the area, frantically looking for Ember. After nearly a mile of flight he found her pacing in some secluded, craggy spot. He landed behind her and she halted her step at the sound of his touching down.
“Ember, please listen.” Thorax began. “I’m so sorry I lied to you. This was a terrible idea and I didn’t mean to ruin the festival for you.” He sighed. “Honestly, I was having such a good time with you I… I forgot I was even in that form. It was just great to finally be able to spend so much time with you; getting to share in your culture and playing all those games with you, it all just felt so natural after a while. I mean, it started out as just friendly fun but as time went on I began to feel something else; being around you wasn’t just fun it was wonderful… you’re… wonderful.” His face saddened. “I didn’t even think about what would happen if you knew it was really me. You’re probably pretty disappointed.” His voice weakened. “You said all those nice things but… that was all meant for Gale.” He teared up. “I’m… sorry I’m not really him.” He started to turn back. “I’d understand if you didn’t even want to talk to me again. I don’t want to upset you any more, I’ll… I’ll go.”
Ember could hear the regret and pain in his voice. She wiped her eye and looked back to see him walking off. “Thorax.” She called, he turned back and looked at her with remorseful eyes. “Of course I don't want you to go.” She started over to him. “I’m sorry I got so angry.”
“But you have every right to be.” He said meekly.
“I know I do. I'm certainly not happy about you lying to us." She held her claw to her temple as she searched for words. "Even though what you did was absolutely crazy… that isn’t what got to me.”
Thorax grew confused. “What do you mean?”
“I mean that I actually meet this amazing guy who is fun and sweet and admittedly a naïve goober… but charming in his own way.” She laughed and gestured towards him. “And it turned out to be you… and… I don’t know how to feel about that.” She smiled lightly and shrugged. “Yeah, in the end there is no Gale; but that doesn’t change what I’ve felt the last couple days. You may not be a dragon, but you are the same silly, sweet hearted doofus I’ve been warming up to.”
He looked at her unsurely. “Is… that a bad thing?”
Ember chuckled and shook her head, recalling the last time he asked that. “Not bad, just weird.”
Thorax managed a smile. “I’m glad to hear that.”
“What about you, Mr. feelings forum?” She asked with a cocky smile. “You said you’ve been feeling the same way. Anything you’d like to share.”
He laughed with embarrassment. “When I first met you I was so impressed with how strong and confident you were; and since we became friends those were the things I associated with you the most. After this festival though, I see that you’re so much more.” He twisted his hoof in the dirt shyly. “It’s funny, as a changeling I can be anything I want to be.” His bright smile returned as he looked into her eyes. “But what I want to be right now… is some creature you’d like to be closer to.”
Ember smiled and breathed a light laugh. “That… is the corniest thing I’ve ever heard.” She stepped up to him, laying her claw to his chest. “I would fall for a dork like you.” She laced her arms around his neck and laid her cheek against him.
Thorax wrapped his foreleg around her waist and pulled her close. “Then I guess I’m the luckiest dork in the world.” They both started to laugh as they held their embrace. “Does this mean you can forgive me?” He asked.
“Yeah, I forgive you.” Ember pulled herself from him, running her claw up his neck and to his cheek. "I know you didn't mean any harm, your hearts just bigger than your head sometimes is all." A mildly impressed smile crossed her. "I will give you this though, you're one heck of an actor."
"Well, I am head of the theatre troop back at the hive." He said with pride.
"You goofball." Ember couldn't help but smile. “We should get back to Spike and Twilight though, let them know everything is okay.”
“Right.” Thorax nodded and stepped aside. “I’ll change back.”
“No, don’t.” Ember stopped him. “You don’t have to do that.”
“Are… you sure?” He asked. “I mean, if the other dragons see me like this then…”
Ember grabbed his cheeks and pulled him into a kiss. Thorax’s train of thought derailed as he closed his eyes and felt himself melt. As their lips parted she smiled confidently. “Then if they want to start something, they’ll have to deal with me first.” She patted his cheek to bring him out of his blissful stupor. “Now let’s go.”
Ember and Thorax quickly headed back towards the festival grounds. They saw Twilight and Spike waiting where Thorax had left them.
“Ember, Thorax.” Twilight waved.
“Hey, sorry about that.” Ember said as she landed.
“Are you two okay?” She asked.
“Yeah, everything’s fine now.” Ember assured as she glanced back at Thorax with a smirk. “Just needed to have a little chat with my new boyfriend here.”
“Huh!?” Spike asked as he hopped into the air. “Really?”
“Yeah.” Ember admitted with a laugh. “The big lug won me over.”
“That’s fantastic news.” Twilight clapped her hooves together. “Congratulations you two.”
“Thank you.” Thorax said as he joined them. “And I’m sorry about the whole ‘Gale’ thing.”
“Ah that’s okay.” Spike said as he landed on Twilight’s back. “Weirder stuff happens to us all the time.”
“In that case, there's still some festival left.” Thorax noted as he held his hoof out to Ember. “I’d really like to finish that dance.”
“I’d love to.” Ember said with a soft smile as she took his hoof.
The four of them walked back around to the dancefloor and the official couple returned to its center. The dragons on the floor stopped at the sight of them but they didn’t pay them any attention. Ember held his right hoof and put her right arm around his neck; Thorax hooked his left leg around her waist and they began to dance. Twilight and Spike watched from the sidelines and smiled as the other dragons slowly began to return to activity.
“Whaaaat?” Pinkie slid up to Twilight. “When did this happen?”
“Gale was Thorax in disguise.” Twilight answered. “So it’s been happening all along.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen Ember smile so much.” Spike pointed out.
“That’s what love is all about Spike.” Pinkie said excitedly. “It’s like a party in your heart.” She squealed as she pulled them both in for a hug.
As the evening grew late and festival began to wind down, Ember flew to the oratory platform and roared to call the attention of all the dragons. They slowly assembled before her with Twilight and the others hanging back towards the rear.
“Listen up!” She shouted in her usual manner, but her face grew softer and she smiled proudly. “Thank you all for coming and making this event even more than I thought it would be. I hope you all walk away from this knowing that we can have so much more than just competition and battle. Don’t get me wrong, I love that stuff as much as the rest of you, but I’ve also learned to love new things. Since visiting places outside the dragon lands, I’ve seen just a glimpse of what the world has to offer and I want to offer it to all of you as well. Next year, not only will be having a second annual festival but it will be open to all creatures… and I hope that you will all be just as open when that day comes.” Her speech was followed by a few long moments of silence but soon the dragons began to roar in unison. Ember felt such a swell of joy in hearing so positive a response. She raised her claws to the sky and the roar died down. “Then I look forward to seeing you all again next year.” She flew down from the platform and the dragons began to disperse.
“Great speech, Ember.” Thorax commended as he, Twilight and Spike came over to her.
“Thanks.” Ember said with a contented sigh.
“As the princess of friendship, I’m so happy to see this.” Twilight looked around at all the dragons. “You’ve helped lead them so far in so short a time.”
“It’s a good feeling.”
“Well, Pinkie and DJ Pon3 are packing up the balloon, it’s time for us to start heading back.” Twilight said as she went to Ember and hugged her.
“Thanks for coming.” Ember squeezed her back. “Can I count on your help next year?”
“Of course.” Twilight nodded.
“Bring the pink one too, she really knows her stuff.” Ember praised.
“Ha, will do.” Twilight assured as she hugged Thorax. “It was good to see you Thorax, I’m glad things worked out with the two of you.”
“Me too.” Thorax said with a hint of relief. “Have a safe trip.”
“You need me to stay and help tear down?” Spike asked as he flew over to Ember.
“No, you head home too.” She laid her claw to his head. “Thanks for all the help.”
“No sweat.” Spike nodded.
“I’ll be in touch when things settle down here.” Ember promised. Twilight and Spike headed back towards the balloon to start their trip home. Thorax immediately came over and laid his head to hers as she hugged onto him. “Well this has been quite the day.” She let out a tired laugh.
“It’s been the best day.” He nuzzled her gently. “I’d be happy to stay and help out if you want.”
“No, that’s okay.” She brought his head down for another long kiss. “As much as I’d like you here, I don’t need any distractions.” She pointed out with a coy smile. “As soon as I’m done though, we’ll get together again… just the two of us.”
“Sounds perfect.” Thorax agreed as he brought her claw up to his lips and kissed it.
Ember blushed and patted his chest. “Alright then lover boy, get going.”
“Okay.” Thorax flew up into the air and hovered over her. “I can’t wait to tell Pharynx about all this. See you soon.” He waved to her and headed up into the night sky. Ember waved back and watched him until he left her view. She smiled to herself as all that had happened ran through her mind again. The genuine joy she felt renewed her energy and with a quick crack of her knuckles she headed back to work.
