Chapter One: The Void

I woke up to a black void, empty of anything. Can't say i was amused, also very confused... Nothing around me. Everything was black. Not dark just- black and empty of anything. I was standing there, even if there was no ground to stand on. It was pretty odd.

I jumped up and turned around when suddenly a voice behind me startled me. Making itself present. There standing was a creature i seen on pictures from documentaries and the internet. It was so unreal and yet it just stand there about one and a half meters away from me, looking down on my little form. Why little? Because this thing just towered over me, about 3 heads bigger than myself. And when i comically slowly turn my head up to look him into his eyes. His black eyes... Eyes so black that they even make the void where were currently standing inside made fuming in envy.

I was so through with everything... I just lost my mind apparently. This could not be real... Since i just went all bananas in my head, all i did there standing motionless and ask that creature:
„ Do you like bananas? „.
He just watched me deadpan in the eyes and was speechless for a few minutes.

Hell... For all I know even an hour or two... Hard to tell because my brain shut down, until he spoke up and started scratching his chin with his left index finger.

„ Not really no... Did- Did I break you? I mean emmm- I Expected a lot but that question is really strange and after what you just went through i hope you didn't just lose your mind and turn mildly insane…? “

I didn't answer him right away... Needed some time to get myself back to my mental capacity to continue this conversation with that... Thing.
I raised my left eyebrow and told him in a apparently calm demeanor that while he pretty much scared me shitless, that i didn't think that i suffered from more than a little case of mild insanity and despite everything, i was sure that i take this ´losing your mind´ thing pretty well.

Didn't expect him to burst out in laughter. Also didn't think this would relax me that much after- Well- Everything...

Here i am, with a thing that looked like the egyptian god of death, namely ´Anubis´. In a place where i could not go anywhere, and i didn't think that that really bothered me anymore... After his unrestrained laughter i somehow didn't feel so scared. Sure my metaphorical ass still was sunken like the titanic on the ground of the icy ocean, but somehow i started to like this creature. And if anything, that was a start. Maybe he could tell me what in the world just happened. Why was i... here? Where was here? What's the purpose of it all?

Turns out:
He is indeed the God Anubis and he needs me for some help... Well Shit. What could possibly go wrong- huh?!
Well... Whatever. Let's see where this would take me. If i'm talking to a GOD OF DEATH that would at least not be something boring i hoped.
Anubis began the conversation anew: „ Well hello there Artemis, my name is Anubis „ . He didn't just went captain obvious here on me, did he? I wondered.

He continued: "We're currently in the void between your world ´Earth´ and your destination namely ´Equus´. I'm going to need your help. As my ´Pawn´ in a game. Or rather as a ´trump card´ for this game. I'm kinda need someone to help me turning the tables in my favor if something went wrong... “. I was wondering why he was smiling so calmly at me went he told me that and I somehow wondered about his casual behavior for a god that was talking with a mere mortal. At least he isn't a prick with a pipe up his ass... I like him as a person. But I just remembered who he was a moment later and went 180 on that guy.

I then ask him: "Why me? How could I possibly be useful to a GOD and to be precise a GOD OF DEATH- I-I- Im a goddamn medic! I-I- I'm the dude that cheated death time and time again, I screwed with you and helped others, when I could do the same... You should be the last one to want me... Hell- You're the last one I would willingly help! YOU TOOK MY MOTHER FROM ME! AND WENT OVERBOARD WITH THE OVERKILL “.

I screamed bloody murder with all my heart and soul at him. After I took one or two minutes to get some air into my lungs back, I continued to glare bloody murder at him, but before I could say anything else he cut me off. With an almost painfully sad face: "I just rule over death, not over the actions that cause it.“
He really hit me like a train with that line.

He continued: "I'm sorry for your lost but I can't change what happened to her, can't change the pain in your heart with some sweet sounding line of words“. Anubis turned a little bit to the side and didn't look me in the eyes anymore and continued: "But I can guarantee you that she will have it good in the afterlife or whatever you would call it. “My eyes widen and my anger started to fade into nothingness.

He paused for a moment and continued than:
"Your mother was a fine female and she raised you to be a good, strong, capable men“. Now I started to get uncomfortable and confused as he returned to face me and returned to look me straight in the eyes. „ I have a lot to tell you, but while the time in the void runs slower than in the world they connect, we still do not have enough to continue this conversation in that direction so I get straight to the point.

My stomach started to turn upside down and I almost throw mental up when he hit me with his next dialog: "Artemis Crimson, I Anubis- God of death will send you to Equus to be my ´Pawn´ in a game that I cannot allow to get won by some of the enemies, you can't even start to imagen, nor would you understand the implication of there victory and there consequences! “...

I think at this point I'm screwed no matter what is going to be said next... Anubis lifted both his hands/paws in the air and was looking like Son Goku preparing the spirit bomb. I just stood there and looked deadpan at his posture. He then set them on my shoulders and stared me in the eyes. I could almost feel how his eyes alone cursed me. I could not breathe and could not move.

After some time passed I calmed down from my terror of his presents. He was unmoving, didn't change the hold of my shoulder, so soft he almost didn't touch them yet so firm i could not move. I resolved myself for what i would now say to him: „ Anubis so we understand each other perfectly-
“I took a deep breath and told him in the coldest face and voice: "I don't fucking care for all that stuff, just know that i'm going to ask a few things from you and if you screw me over than what ever exist over a God like you exist, will not be enough to save you from my wraith, will not be withstand my onslaught when you don't honor the deal“.

I than relaxed my body and smiled fiercely at him continuing my speech: "But if you give me three things that you can offer me, i will do everything you ask me. Anubis took his hand/paws from me looked me over with a stern look and than nooded me to continue my speech and give him my demands for my loyalty.

I closed my eyes took three deep breaths and than spoke:
"1. My mother gets the very best what the afterlife has to offer.
2. You let me see her at one point now or in the future so I can say my final goodbye from her and..." Tears start flowing from my eyes.
3. When everything's said and done I want a guaranty who ever dies, because of my action or inaction do to fulfill my part in your bloody game get a good treatment no matter what they have done in life if I ask you to give it to them.

Time passed. And when I opened my eyes, only determination was in them. Anubis saw it and smiled. Anubis simply nodded and answered:
"DEAL".
