Chapter 15: Dragon Matriarch

I looked outside the carriage at the billowing smoke still coming from the Griffon kingdom but as if they knew I was watching the smoke suddenly cut off and sky was looking much brighter already. I turned my head towards the incoming mountain range that had a big facility to the side of it. We started to slow down and I could feel the tension in the carriage. “What’s wrong?” I poked Short Fall and she turned to face me. She coughed to clear her throat.

“Well let’s just say that the last time we tried negotiating we were met with severe opposition resulting in deaths of a few ponies.” I sighed and we started to descend. We soon landed and I held Short Fall back.”Yes?” I looked at her.

“Death is never an easy thing to deal with. It haunts your conscience for the rest of your life. But with people at your side, you can usually get it off your mind.” I lifted her head up at me as she began to drupe down. “I will do my best to keep you and your team safe but I can’t make any promises that we will get out of here alive.” We exited the carriage and walked in the building. I looked towards the giant desk and looked up at the monstrosity before me. I and the team sat down. He raised an eyebrow and puffed out some smoke from his huge nostrils.

“What is it that you have come here for?” He said with a hint of anger and it made me know instantly that he hated to be disturbed.

“Sir I am the human James Fleck and these are my associates. We are here to make a deal on the gem crisis.” He waved his claw which showed that he wanted us to continue. “Well as you may know the Everfree forest is on Equestrian soil and therefore our property, what I want to do is make a deal of sorts. I want to offer this land as your hunting grounds and in return you will stop forcing gems out of us.” He raised his lips in a sneer.
“And what makes you think I want that worthless pile of crap land? There aren’t any gems there.”

I coughed to clear my voice. “Well you see we are lifting the no meat eating law off of your species so you can hunt the wild life at a controlled rate.” He put his claw up to his chin in thought.

“It does sound enticing to finally be able to revel in the thrill of killing, instead of fearing it.” I nodded in agreement. “I will take you request in consideration, now please leave me be. I want to be in a peaceful environment to think this through.” I looked at him menacingly.

“Well I’m afraid the deal only last today dragon because if you don’t side with us we will just cut off the gem supplies efficiently starving your race and will not allow you or any refugees access to our lands.” He slammed his claws on the desk and growled at me.

“What makes you think we won’t just force our way in and steal all your gems?” He raised his eyebrow at me. I stood up and walked over to the oversized desk.

“Because we will decimate you with our new found power.”

“What power is that?”

“We have the power to destroy your land and kill dragons with ease.” He stiffened up a bit.

“Oh and what if I call your statement a bluff?”

“We will come here and commit genocide.” He covered his face with his claw and sighed.

“Okay but first I want your absolute promise to never threaten my land like this again, can you tell me why you are doing this to us?” I looked at him with sympathy.

“I’m doing this so that Equestria and the nations depending on it will survive to live another day. I am also doing this for the survival of the fittest.” He nodded in agreement.

“We dragons are ruled by a matriarch so I am the most powerful dragon in the kingdom. My son is dead because he drowned in a lava pit and it showed me that I can’t every let my children to be weak nor can I be weak. I know that there is a chance that you’re bluffing but I will not risk my entire race on one stupid gamble, now please leave before I decide to eat some ponies.”

Everyone quickly left and entered back in the sky carriage. Shortfall dabbed her head with a cloth as I knew how much fear she was hiding inside her body.

I continued to look on as tears started streaming down her face and now before me instead of the stout mare I once knew.
I saw a horrible pile of mixed emotions and physical dreariness. She looked up at me and ran into my arms. I caught her and held her there, my shirt getting soaked with tears. “Why? Why do I have to live? How do I deal with this… this sadness inside me?” I lifted her chin up to look at me

“You enjoy life and have no regrets. That is how to deal with your sadness. As to why you have to live? Well it’s entirely up to you to find your purpose in life.” She looked into my eyes and pushed her face into mine, our lips meeting.

“Thank the Matriarch your okay. I was afraid you would get hurt.” We let go of each other and went our separate ways. When we were back on the street I looked at Short Fall and she smiled back.

“So do you want to come and introduce yourself to Twilight or are you going to stay here?” She chuckled and punched my leg lightly.

“Of course I want to go see my herd mate. It’s not like I have anything better to do.” We walked to the train station and hopped on the next train heading through Ponyville. “So I hear that this Twilight is a pretty important pony, so what has she done that made her so awesome?”

“Well, right now her work and home is at library and she is the element of magic…” Her eyes widened.
