There standing high above the many ordinary straw roofs of Ponyville in the pale moonlight was the Castle of Friendship. Not only a landmark, a statement to the everlasting bonds of friendship, but it also served as the home to this town's most influential resident. The former personal pupil to Princess Celestia and now the Princess of Friendship here resided Twilight Sparkle. This relatively young mare had it all: trustworthy friends, her own experiments, books galore, the support of her fellow Princesses, her own school, and most important of all she had Spike. Her faithful dragon and number one assistant who has been grown up with her since fillyhood.
No matter what the task Princess Twilight could count on Spike to complete it as he was always there by her side. Even though the same could hardly be said for the alicorn, in recent events she had failed to recognize his growing worries. She has sworn to herself to make more efforts in being a better friend to the faithful drake. This is what Twilight hoped to be keeping at least.
Twilight sparkle gave a tired sigh as she scratched another line of words on the scroll in front of her. It was long past the middle of the night now. A time where many ponies, young fillies and colts would be asleep. Well, all except for her the princess of friendship. She dipped the tip of her quill in her ink; and began to write another line on the scroll. She brought her hooves up to her eyes and gently rubbed them. She then yawned and stretched herself out. Loosening up some of her tense muscles inside her body.
“Almost done,” She said in a tired voice. Her ears perked up a little at the sound of her chamber doors opening. Turning around she saw teenage Spike walking towards her. He had a warm cup of tea in his claws.
“Hey, Twilight,” Spike spoke in a gentle voice as he place the cup down on the desk next to her. He then gently nuzzled the side of her head; it got a small giggle out of her.
“Hey, Spike,” Twilight replied before using her magic to lift the tea cup up to her lips. Allowing her to drink some of the warm sweet liquid. After she had drank enough to quench her thirst she had set the half empty cup back down. “Thanks Spike.” She thanked him.
“No, problem,” He replied before he gazed at the clock; when he saw what time it was a worried expression found itself on his face, “Um, Twilight?”
“I know what time it is Spike,” She interrupted him before she shook her head. Trying her best to keep herself awake, “I'll just be a few more minutes and then I'll go to bed.” she finished.
Spike knew that was a lie. She would always say that she would be up for a few more minutes. Only to end up staying up long past the witching hour. He shook his head and reached forward with one of his claws. Gently grabbing the quill that was in Twilight's magical hold.
“Spike!” She said in a surprised voice while trying to pull her quill back, “What are you doing?” She asked.
“Making you go to bed.” Spike replied before freeing the quill from her magical hold. He then moved to pick her up, “Come on.” He said.
“Spike,” Twilight said in a defiant voice; while trying to break out of his hold, “Spike! I have to finish this letter! Put me down!” she finished as she tried to break out of his hold.
“No,” Spike replied as he began to walk towards her bed, “It's time for bed, Twilight.” He finished with a chuckle. Reminding himself of how Twilight Velvet would tell them the same thing.
When he reach the side of her bed he gently layed her down her bed. He had to gently push her back down. When he heard her release a defeated sigh he knew he had won. He pulled the overs over her and tucked her in. A happy smile stretched itself across his face; as he gently rubbed the back of her head. He heard her sigh again; but this time it was of comfort.
“Thanks,” Twilight thanked him.
“No problem,” He replied.
For a little while all he did was watch her sleep in peace. Watching her as she gently breathed in and out; finally getting the rest that she deserved. He could feel his vocal cords vibrating and soon he felt a gentle purr escaping from his maw.
He closed his eyes and remembered a song he had heard Twilight Velvet sing so long ago. A lullaby that would help both him and Twilight sleep at night. He did his best to mimic the tune she would use.
(Rest your heads my little ponies.)
He began to rub the back of her head again.
(The warm sun is gone and now the calming moon has risen.)
He struggled to keep the tone.
(Sleep in peace my lovely little babies.)
Gently he brushed a small amount of her mane out her face.
(I feel so blessed for the two gifts I have been given.)
He could see a small smile stretch across Twilight's face.
(A lovely unicorn filly that shines just like starlight. A handsome baby dragon who's always by her side.)
He yawned lightly feeling the effects of the song.
(Mommy loves both of you.)
He slowly brought his head down to her ear.
(I love you my little Twilight and my little Spike.)
He then gently kissed her forehead.
(I love you both. Oh, yes I do.)
When he finished the lullaby he felt a warming sensation course through his body. Slowly he walked over to the other side of the bed. Where he gently crawled onto the bed next to her. Playing one of his paw around her; he hugged her close. He then rested his head on hers while releasing a gentle pure again. Unknown to him Twilight had opened one of her eyes and smiled. She released another quite sight and melted into his warmth; her eyes slowly closing as she fell back to sleep.
When morning came Spike was the first to wake up. He yawned quietly as he slowly woke from his slumber. when he was fully awake. He saw something that made him smile happily. Twilight had shifted in her sleep during the night; now she was facing him. which allowed her to gently hug him. He released a gentle sigh as he gentle rubbed the back of her head. Although, he would usually get up and greet the day. He figured a few more minutes wouldn't hurt. As he feel back to sleep. He was unaware Twilight was actually awake and just laying in the bed with him. A smile stretched across her muzzle; as she snuggled closer to him. Last night she had gotten the best sleep she had ever had. all thanks to her sweet dragon and his Lullaby
