Chapter One

Apple Bloom sat staring at her parent's tree, this was the tree that was sprouted from the seeds they buried together on their wedding night, her father Bright Macintosh and her mother Pear Butter, which made Big Mac, Applejack, and herself half pear, but that was the thing wasn't it, they always believed they were apples to the core. Now they were not only half pear but it also raised another question, Apple Bloom took one last look at the tree gathering all her courage before walking back to her house, but the long walk back made any courage she made fade with each step.

When she finally reached the front door she felt her heart beat faster, her legs began to shake, she started to breath slower to try to calm herself down, she walked into the living room and spotted the very pony she wanted to talk to. Her granny was sleeping on her rocking chair, she slowly approached and opened up her mouth but nothing but a squeak came out, this woke up her granny who looked around, “Was that a mouse? I swear those little vermin...”
Apple Bloom coughed lightly stopping her granny, “No Granny Smith it was me.”

Her granny looked down at her as she sat down in front of her. “Oh Apple Bloom, what are you doing in here? Shouldn't you be helping around the farm or playing with your friends?”
“I was going to go to the club house and meet up with Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo, I wanted to show them the tree and tell them about my parents but...” She took a deep shaky breath, “I don't have the one answer they are going to ask, how come none of Pear Butter's kids are named after her side of the family, so I came here to ask you since you knew them better then my siblings do.”

Granny sighed rocking slowly in her chair, “I guessed one of you would ask that question after you found out about your mom, well I'll tell you why. You see after Grand Pear left Pear Butter and I welcomed her into the family, it wasn't a very smooth welcome, a lot of other apple family members were still a bit weary around Pear Butter, but of course Bright Mac just wasn't having it at all...” / Granny looked over to where Pear Butter was crying on a hill as everypony were avoiding her, she watched as she tried to help but each time she tried they left before she could ask.

Granny knew this wasn't going to work, Pear Butter would be miserable no matter if she stayed or left, then she heard a loud stomp and looked over to where Bright Mac was glaring at everypony, “Alright enough is enough, everypony come here now!” Everypony stopped what they were doing, looked over at him, then headed over to him, Bright Mac was a kind soul but everypony knew what he was like when he got angry, “Listen closely, Buttercup and I are married and I love her, from now on you'll treat her as part of the family.

Or we will both leave and you'll never see us again!”
Granny gasped in shock, “You don't mean that do you son?”

“Yes I do.” Bright Mac said standing firm, “I'm as serious as the sun raise, from now on you'll call her Buttercup, treat her as a part of the family, or we are both leaving to be with ponies who will accept as both, and if we can't find that then we will start our own farm and family!” Pear Butter gasped. “I told you I don't want to be apart from you ever and I meant it, if they don't accept you then they don't accept me, there is no brightness without a buttercup.”

Granny looked at them both carefully, “Well if that's what it will have to be son...” Granny said walking over to them making the pair nervous about what she will say next. “Then I welcome you properly to the family Buttercup.”
Bright Mac was shocked as Buttercup smiled, “Thank you Granny Smith.”

Granny waved her hoof at her, “None of that we're family now it's just Granny.”
Buttercup rubbed the tears away, “Thank you Granny.” / “That was the first moment Bright Mac stood his ground against his family, but he wanted us to know he was being serious.”

Granny sighed deeply, “To be honest that sort of hostility shouldn't have gone on as long as it did, but I really don't blame them it's kind of hard to get over a long standing feud.” Apple Bloom watched as her granny licked her lips she quickly got a mug filled with water and gave it to her granny, “Here you are granny.”
“Oh thank you.” Granny said taking the mug and sipping it lightly. “Now back to the story, tension was still in the air but everypony was trying to treat Buttercup a bit better even showing her a few things so that she could help.” /

Granny watched Buttercup as she tried to buck a tree and failed miserably as no apples fell from the tree, “No that's not how you do it.” Granny said as she walked over and helped Buttercup position herself better, “Now kick it like your kicking a stubborn door.” Butter cup bucked the tree again and a few apples fell this time but she yelped laying down, granny quickly checked what was wrong, “Looks like you hurt your hooves, perfectly normal for a first timer, all you need is a nice hot hoof soak and you'll be feeling better in no time.

Buttercup cried as her hooves throbbed in pain, “And all of you do this every day? No wonder my family gently picked the fruit down, kicking the trees is painful.”
Granny couldn't help but laugh, “You'll get used to it, that is if you truly want to help around this farm, since you can't till the fields I'm moving you to egg collecting duty until your hooves feel better.”

“No I can still..."
Granny kept her from getting up, “Don't try to stand now you'll only hurt yourself more.”

Granny called over Bright Mac and placed Buttercup on his back, “Buttercup hurt her hooves bring her to the house so that she can soak them in nice hot water.”
Bright Mac nodded and walked to his house as Buttercup sighed deeply, “This is so embarrassing.” Granny chuckled, “Well that's what you get for asking to learn how to buck the trees instead of starting with something more simple.” Once they were inside the house Granny helped Buttercup lay down on the couch, and then went to the kitchen grabbing the kettle.
“Here let me do that Granny.” Bright Mac said holding out his hoof.

Granny gave him the kettle and she watched him go outside to fill it with water, once it was full he placed it on top of a grill which was just above a fire pit, Bright Mac got the fire going so that the water would heat up, “And don't forget to bring in the herbs from the garden.” Granny shouted at him before going back to Buttercup, “Now then how about I teach you some apple family recipes while we wait.” Buttercup smiled. / “And so I taught her how to bake an apple pie, that was our first real bounding moment.”
