Extra Credit Lessons

“Ms. Harshwhinny, I need to talk to you!” I practically slammed my hands onto her desk, causing her to tilt her glasses in confusion.

“Yes? What is it, Ms. Glimmer?”

“I want to change my major!”

Ms. Harshwhinny looked at me with eyes wide in confusion. “But you’re about to graduate! You can’t just change your major this late into your academic career!”

“Yes I can. There’s… something that I might be better at than politics or communism.”

“Er… communism, you say?”

“That’s not the point, Ms. Harshwhinny!”

My academic advisor then folded her arms with disapproval as the two of us entered into a stare down. “And what is it that is so important to you that you wish to change your major now?”

“I’ve been thinking about my future a lot recently, and I don’t think there are going to be many opportunities for me in the political world. Sure, I might be able to force my way in, but I’d much rather let others come to me whenever they need help with something.”

“And what career do you suppose will give you that?”

I gave her a big smile, and for once, I honestly believed that I was going to study something that I loved, with a career that made me just as happy.

“Ms. Harshwhinny, I want to be a guidance counselor!”
