After Luna is banished to the moon, everypony has to deal with the aftermath. Celestia struggles to find a reason continue being a ruler after banishing her sister, Starswirl must crush rebel cells unhappy with Lunas banishment and keep the peace and security of the kingdom, and Luna explores the universe at large, learning to accept help from others and how to deal with failure. She finds things that put into question everything she knows and meets lots of colorful characters in her journey of a thousand years. This is the story of how everypony is a hero in their own right.
