“But Ste-v-e!!” Dinky cried, looking at the Crafter with a pout. “I’m bored!” Steve let out a sigh as the book in his hands fell into his lap. While he enjoyed reading, he’d been going at it since Derpy had left a few hours before. He could only sit still for so long.

“And what exactly do you want me to do about it? Your mom said you couldn’t leave because of your grounding. Speaking of which,” his expression turned curious, “what exactly did you do that made her see fit to punish you with a week of no playing outside, and no T.V?” Dinky blushed and looked away. It took her a few moments for her to respond.

“I, uh, may have uh,” her blush deepened, “blown up the kitchen. A little.” Steve’s eyebrows raised and he looked over to his side, seeing the sheet that hung from the entrance to the kitchen, currently blocking both entry and vision of whatever disaster lay on the other side.

“I was wondering why that was up. But how did you even…? Y’know what, nevermind.” He sighed as he rubbed his face with a hand. Looking up toward the ceiling, he suddenly had a bout of inspiration. Grinning, he looked down at Dinky. “Okay, since you’re so bored, how about I tell you a story?”

She looked up at him with a curious and slightly excited expression. “What kinda story?”

“A story from my world. A tale called, “The Tale of the Two Brothers.”

The Tale of the Two Brothers

Once, long ago, the land of Minecraftia was a desolate, lifeless place. Nothing existed, but barren rock. Then, Notch and Herobrine arrived. From origins unknown, they made the land into their home with their godly powers.

“What kinda powers?” Dinky asked.

“I’m getting to that.” Steve replied.

Notch, the god of life and light, used his powers to change the barren landscape. He brought life and color to the land. He made trees, and grass, as well as many animals, like chickens, pigs, cows, you name it. He created a peoples, called the villagers, as well as their homes, aptly named villages.

The villagers lived in peace and harmony, giving thanks and basking in the light of the sun that Notch had formed and cared for. The villagers loved Notch, and he loved them. And all was good. However, it was not to last.

“What happened?” Dinky inquired, interrupting again. Steve let out a sigh.

“I’ll get to that, if you would simply let me finish.”

“Oh, sorry.” She replied, sheepishly.

Herobrine, brother to Notch, was the god of the night. He felt cheated by Notch, and villagers, as they loved the day, but slept through the night. He felt forgotten by his brother, and became jealous.

While Herobrine wasn’t as strong as Notch, he was more strategic. So, to stay his brothers hand, Herobrine made creations of his own. He created monsters, terrible, bloodthirsty monsters, to terrorize the villagers. These creatures were a scourge on the land, killing villagers and destroying their homes. Leaving his monsters to do their work, Herobrine retreated to the Nether to construct a base and grow in strength.

Notch was caught off-guard. At first, he tried in vain to destroy the plague himself. When that failed, he created golems from snow and iron to defend the villages. But it wasn't enough. Notch realized he needed more, something better. After many months of thinking and experimenting, he was struck with an idea.

Using his magic, he conjured together a being with great powers, capable of many great things, able to fight the dangers of the night. He named this new species after the land they would come to reside in. The Minecraftians. Or Crafter’s for short.

“That’s what you are, isn’t it?”

“Yeah.” He replied simply.

After a year or two, and the Minecraftian race had grown quite large, Herobrine received news of this new race capable of killing his creations. He was furious at the tables turning on him. In retaliation, he mustered together a large horde of monsters and marched towards the Aether, Notch’s home.

To combat the threat, Notch created a army, consisting of golems. A few, perhaps a dozen Crafter’s even volunteered to fight as well, equipped with whatever weapons and armor they could get. As soon as Herobrine’s forces arrived, Notch’s army was sent forth to fight them, the god of light at the front. And fight they did.

The battle was fierce and bloody. While the golems and Crafter’s fought the mobs, Notch battled his brother. They fought hard and desperately, either one trying to gain the upperhand. While Herobrine had grown stronger during his time in the Nether, they now found each other to be evenly matched. Neither of them were able to defeat their opponent.

After many days of fighting, Notch and Herobrine were forced to stop. They had both exhausted their strength and magic. With what little forces he still had, Herobrine was forced to retreat back to the Nether. In the wake of such a grueling defeat, Herobrine locked himself away, recovering and planning.

Notch, in turn, took his forces back to the Aether, where he recovered his strength and continued to rule the day. But, something had changed. He wasn’t the same. He became reclusive and sought time alone. It all came to a head when he suddenly disappeared off the face of the planet. Never to be seen again.

“...The End.” Steve finished, a smile present on his face.

“...What?! That’s how it ends!?? That’s garbage!!” Dinky cried out angrily, eyebrows furrowed. “It doesn’t tell you what happens after?!” Steve let out a laugh at the filly’s frustration.

“There is an ending to this tale, but that’s a story for another time.”

“Really?” Dinky asked excitedly, anger gone at the prospect. “Can you tell me now?” Steve opened his mouth to respond, but was swiftly cut off by the door opening, revealing the weathermare, Derpy Hooves.

“Hey Steve, hey Dinky!” She said as she walked in and shut the door behind her.

Steve smirked down at the filly. “Another time.” He promised Dinky as he got up off the couch. “Hey Derpy! Welcome back.”
