These were the traits of Princess Celestia which defined nearly every waking hour of her life. She had always been a talented alicorn with incredible magical abilities, an apt knowledge of social norms, and the wisdom to navigate nearly all walks of life with unconditional love as her mantra.. In many ways, she was seen as Celestia’s equal, as a ruler and a guiding light for ponies in need. As a Dream Walker, Luna often made herself available to ponies while they slept, offering advice and assisting them through their darkest nightmares. She was not without her own nightmares, but years of experience had taught her to control her own darkness, knowing full well that the light of her friends and family could save her from even the most horrendous of nightmares. However, there was one pony whom she had always viewed with utmost curiosity and care. A certain princess, who despite her shining smile and regal stature, often hung her head low when the curtains fell and the act was over.
It was her own sister, Celestia, who had troubled Luna these past few nights. It began with a late sunrise that happened earlier that week. She knew her sister to be many things, and “late” was not one of them. Then one morning when she collected the teacups off the table, she found Celestia’s cup to be completely full. Not a drop out of place. Something was definitely wrong with her. Not that she would ever let anypony realize such a thing, lest she inspire worry among her subjects. She had to realize, however, that Luna was no fool.
She confronted her one night before she went to sleep. The conversation did not go as Luna had intended.
“Thou seems to be out of sorts dear sister. What troubles you?”
“Why Luna, I’m afraid I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Thy entourage is no longer present. We demand that thee speak freely!”
“Luna… I will not accept that tone from you. You don’t need to demand anything. I have nothing to tell you. Good night.”

She might have gone a bit too far in trying to force Celestia to speak her mind. With that, Celestia seemed to distance herself a little more, which only added to Luna’s worry for her. If there was one thing she could do to better understand her sister’s plight… it would be to counsel her when her defenses were down. When the act would not be necessary. It had been years since she last attempted this… Princess Luna would need to dream walk into Princess Celestia’s dreams.
With the moon hanging lazily overhead, night had fallen swiftly upon Equestria. The palace guards’ shift would soon be over, and the elite Night Guard would take their place. Bat ponies transfigured by Princess Luna’s magic were more suited for patrolling the grand halls at night, with eyes that could see in the dark easily and webbed wings which allowed them to survey the skies in near silence. The ever glowing orb in the sky served as a symbol for all creatures - the time for sleep and dreams had finally come.
Even Celestia knew to heed the moon’s call. She would need to rest if she was to awaken the following morning to raise the sun. Whether she slept well or not, that was not something for her to decide. Let the fates sort it out , she would think to herself. For weeks she had clung to the hope that her dreams would be better… that whatever nightmare had pestered her all this time would finally be tamed. She had hope, but naught the nerve to ask for help when she needed it.
I should not have snapped at her the way I did... She drew the curtains closed, lay on her bed, and begged her mind be still until she finally fell asleep.
The starry dreamscape was unusually beautiful tonight. Silver pathways of dust and moonlight branched from a central hub in the middle of the world. With every step that Luna took, the ground beneath her rippled like a puddle in a pond. She had traversed through the dreamscape for centuries, and despite her absence as Nightmare Moon, it didn’t take long for her to recall her way to nearly every avenue of the dream world. Everypony had their own individual path which would lead to their dream world, and her dear sister would be no different.
She flew up and away to a large door situated in the center of a pristine garden filled with ethereal blossoms and flora of supernatural beauty. Luna had fashioned this garden herself, a secret project she took upon to pay homage to her sister. Ever the loyal and loving sibling, she had always wanted to show Celestia what she had made for her, but there was always some excuse on her mind that prevented her from bringing it up. Luna knew better than to think that Celestia would resent her selfless act of love… and yet, this garden had remained her secret for years.
Celestia’s private thoughts and dreams existed beyond this door. For a moment, Luna feared she had not the will to proceed…
“Luna… I will not accept that tone from you. You don’t need to demand anything. I have nothing to tell you. Good night.”
Celestia’s words echoed in her head. Luna tapped on the door and phased through it, leaving her doubts and fears behind~ proceeding instead with purpose and determination to find what nightmares her sister hid behind her sunlit facade.
Cakes. Pastries. Sweets. As far as the eye could see. Had she stepped into the correct door? This was highly reminiscent of a dream Pinkie Pie had the other day, save for the missing balloons and the ten story gingerbread castle ruled by ‘Her Highness Princess Pinkie Pie’. Luna admitted that she certainly had celestial aspirations befitting a princess.
But no, this was not right. Or maybe, it was more fitting than she thought. Celestia had always had a fondness for sweets and snacks just like anypony. It was one of the few civil traits that she shared with her subjects that was unbefitting of a princess. Not only did she have a weakness for sweets, but she was a prankster herself. Luna thought back to their time at the Castle of the Two Princesses, and the pranks they played on each other. The look on Princess Platinum’s face when she fell through the trap door in the throne room. Priceless.
Upon further examination, this was definitely the right place. Luna flew among the clouds of a bright blue sky above the valley below where she finally found who she was looking for. Princess Celestia… and… another pony. A unicorn clothed in regal blue robes adorned with a crown. She recognized this stallion. He was a noble unicorn who had once sacrificed everything to preserve his love for Celestia and her subjects.
There was no mistaking it… This was King Sombra. A Sombra from an alternate universe that Celestia had discovered during her studies with Star Swirl the Bearded. In that universe, every ponies roles had been reversed. In that universe… Luna and Celestia were the villains. And the benevolent King Sombra had fallen in love with the Celestia from a different universe… her universe… her dear sister.
Luna watched them from a cloud high above them. It was like a scene from a dramatic play which was happily sloping into its denouement. The hero and his princess had undergone hardships, fought against their demons those outside and within. They had deserved their happy ending…
There was a sudden shift, and the calm winds suddenly became turbulent. Luna focused on what had happened below, and what was once a green meadow had turned brown, crispy and dead. Celestia was alone… and Sombra was nowhere to be found.
That’s right… his sacrifice… separated them forever.
The world glitched and shifted around in an instance. Luna was suddenly in full regalia standing in the grand hall of the castle. The shift was too sudden, so she was not able to control where she ended up. One look to the right and she saw Celestia walking toward her. She stood at attention, as naturally as she could to make herself seem to be a part of the dream.
She recognized this memory. It was months ago. The delegates from Saddle Arabia presented their heir whom had come of age and was in line to succeed them. Luna looked at Celestia from the corner of her eye and saw something that she had completely missed~ her sister’s eyes fluttered for a moment. How could she have missed that? Thinking back, she had no idea that her sister had been taken by the prince so suddenly.
Another temporal shift~ Luna used her magic to cloak herself this time, allowing her to move freely. Celestia’s dreams had taken her to the garden where she knew Celestia and the prince had met several times. She thought it was purely on royal business~ but for Celestia to court a prince, it actually felt exciting. She had not seen her sister so happy to be interacting with another pony in this way.
“Celestia… you are a princess… I am a mere peon compared to your regality. I’m… afraid we cannot continue like this.”

Luna shook the tears from her eyes and focused on a specific flower she had planted in the garden, a “Moon Blossom”. What a gift to present to her sister… something to show her that no matter what happens, she will find love, and she will be loved someday. That even now, she is loved. Luna picked the flower and raced back to her door closing the dreamscape behind her, resolving to make things up to Celestia immediately.
The Moon Blossom would not survive long outside of the dreamscape, but with a special spell, it would last long enough for Celestia to accept it and marvel at its beauty. That would be enough for Luna to feel that she had done something right by her sister.
The Night Guard posted outside Celestia’s room would hesitate to let Luna into her sister’s room despite it being a royal command. Unwavering in her resolve, Luna’s horn lit up as she cast a spell of deep sleep upon the guard. The sound of their bodies slumping to the ground was the cue she needed to move quickly as she cleared the archway and nudged the door open, closing it behind her as quietly as she could.
Celestia remained undisturbed even as the door latch *clinked* shut. Luna moved like a ghost across the room as she made her way to her sister’s bedside table. She withdrew an enchanted flower pot using her magic and placed the Moon Blossom inside it carefully. With any luck, Celestia would awaken to a welcome surprise in the morning. It was time, now to vanish as quickly as she had appeared.

Luna was not sure if she would ever tell her sister about what happened tonight. Perhaps it would be best to keep this a secret for now. She wouldn’t mind asking Celestia to return the favor someday… in her dreams that is.
That can certainly be arranged.
