After several years of getting their butts beat, and more thoroughly each time around as a matter of fact, both Celestia and Luna have decided it is time to seek out some actual training in the ways of fighting. While they -should- be able to go to the Royal Guard's trainers for such skills, said guard also has had similar competency issues as of late alongside the Princesses.

So, their solution is to call the one whom has the quickest "completely dunk on the Princesses" record to date, Tempest Shadow. While a bit nervous after having just been on the list of 'enemies of the state' not to long ago, Tempest agrees that the need for the Princesses to get some training is real, and (after some rough negotiations), she agrees to train them. It does give her a chance to try out this whole 'depend on others' and 'friendship' stuff everyone is talking about to.

The bonds forged through fighting are quite the strong ones, and put people in situations both intimate and vulnerable. It is said you only truly know someone after you've had to fight them, and arguably it was the conflict between Celestia and Nightmare Moon that laid bare the sisters' feelings about one another most clearly. Although the training is supposed to be about them learning how to defend themselves and Equestria better, the fierce mare they've asked to be their Mentor has a powerful allure that not only takes the Princesses by surprise, but also drags to the surface an untended depth to the sisters' relationship they never quite realized was there.
