“I’m sorry, Twi, I just don’t feel the same way.” said a tearful Rainbow Dash.

Rain beat fiercely against the window panes of Twilight’s library. Fierce gusts of wind shook the branches of the massive tree, sending tremors through the structure. Candles shook and flickered in the darkness of the library and their light was all that illuminated Twilight and Rainbow Dash. Looming towers of bookshelves stood over them like the trees of a dark forest and despite Twilight’s presence, Rainbow Dash had never felt as alone as she did in the darkness of that afternoon.

Twilight sobbed into Dash’s chest as tears fell from her face like the rain. “I know how you feel, but I’ll never understand why.”

“It’s not anything you did wrong-” spluttered Dash, tears of her own hanging heavily on her face. She sniffled as she tried to find better words, but nothing came to her.

Something about the darkness of the room seemed appropriate to Dash. Had the two broken up under the sparkling light of an afternoon sun, it just wouldn’t have made sense. Although her mind already quaked from the pain of the emotions as Twilight begged her for a reason, for anything that would make sense to her intellectually oriented way of seeing the world, Rainbow Dash knew she would have broken on the spot if the world had not shared in her mourning.

Dash let Twilight fall from her arms as the unicorn heaved with sobs.

“Dash,” she said as she looked up to the mare who used to be her best friend, used to be her everything, used to be her lover. “I know you don’t love me anymore, but I’ll always love you.”

“Twilight,” started Dash. “You’re not a bad pony. We just don’t-”

“Just go.” said Twilight as she tearfully turned away from the pegasus.

Rainbow Dash took one last look at the sobbing unicorn before making her leave from the library.

Before she shut the door, Twilight began to speak again, but Dash simply let the door swing closed. There was nothing more to be said between the two.

*****

Rain swirled about the mud of the dirt street as a torrential downpour came from above. It was a scheduled thunderstorm intended to help grow the struggling harvests of the seasons and under normal circumstances, Dash would have furiously protested against it. After all, sunshine and rainbows were the normal ways of the Equestrian skies.

She let out a sigh as a peal of thunder hailed from far above and lightning sent shaky throes of illumination across the dark streets. What was it that had led to her leaving Twilight?

Of course, she had found a new lover. From the day she had first spoken to Lyra, Dash simply knew that there was no going back to Twilight. The green unicorn simply made her feel stronger and deeper things than Twilight ever did and though she tried to deny it for so long, Dash knew that Lyra was simply the better pony for her.

All of those explanations were just empty words to her though. No matter how hard she thought, Dash could never quite get to the why of what had broken her desire to be with Twilight. Over time, their sex and their dates had just lost their sparkle and charm. Giving love to the unicorn had turned into a chore over time and even as she shook from orgasms given to her by her unicorn lover, Dash had lost her romantic view of Twilight.

They had gone to couples’ counseling time and time again. All of their friends had stepped in to help mend their friendship; Fluttershy had sat the two down on a couch in her home and talked to them, Pinkie Pie had thrown them a party and the rest had helped in their own ways. Even Celestia had stepped in to offer advice, but to no avail. Each time a pony would try to help them, things would get better for a time, but the feeling that Twilight just wasn’t right for her never left Dash’s mind.

And now here she was, trudging in a darkness of howling winds and pouring rain, on the inside and outside.

The rain continued to howl down from above and Dash took pleasure in the way it wet her mane and mingled with the tears on her face. If anypony were to see her walking down the street, perhaps they would chuckle at how the rain had forced the pegasus to walk, when she loved to fly. To tell the truth however, even if the sky above was as blue as the ocean, Dash would still be walking. Flying was an act of happiness to her and she could feel no joy in this moment.

Well, even that was a lie.

As she walked, Dash could see the lights of Lyra’s cottage up ahead. It had been a long and hard trudge through the storm, but she had finally made it to the home of the pony that she loved more than anything. A happiness she never expected to feel again began to blossom in her heart and her lips turned upwards in an unexpected smile.

Maybe it was her love for Lyra that had simply quenched her affection towards Twilight, thought Dash. Ponies were creatures with a single heart to give; when one’s heart becomes centered on another, it can be hard to split it between two different ponies. Dash settled on it as an explanation for her pain.

It was a cozy home; a shack of wooden logs with glass windows from which candlelight flickered and a mailbox stood opened outside the house. Curtains served to hide the interior of the home. Smoke lazily drifted from a chimney and a brick pathway led to the entrance. Dash’s heart was furiously beating as she walked up the pathway.

Finally, she was in front of the door. It was a beautiful piece of carved oak with a heart scrawled on the front. Dash raised her hoof to knock-

But before she could, it swung open to reveal Lyra.

Dash’s words caught in her throat and she couldn’t say a thing. There were so many words that crawled up her throat in that moment, so many explanations bulging at the base of her skull, but nothing would stick to her tongue.

“Dash?” asked Lyra curiously. “I thought you were going to spend today with Twilight?”

“We need to talk,” said Dash as she pawed the ground.

*****

Dash heaved with sobs over the table.

Lyra had prepared a few cups of tea for the pegasus and they sat at her kitchen table before a curtained window. The tea sat un-sipped in its cups and a pink candle flickered within the center of the table. Bright lamps shone across the room to fully illuminate it in the depths of the storm.

“I understand why you did what you did.” said Lyra.

“Do you?” meekly asked Dash through her tears.

“I do.” reaffirmed Lyra. “And I feel the same way towards you, you know.”

“Do you think we can be-” started Dash. Before she could get her words out, Lyra silenced them with a kiss and both of their faces turned crimson.

“Lovers?” said Lyra, moving her head back to break the kiss. “One day. But you need to heal, Dash. You’re hurting.”

“I know,” said Dash as she began to sob again. “I’ll just go-”

“I can help you.” sputtered Lyra.

“Help me? How-” asked Dash.

Lyra took the pegasus in her hooves and kissed her deeply on the lips again. Dash’s eyes widened and then shut as she embraced and accepted the kiss. Their tongues began to intertwine in their mouths and soft moans swept the interior of the cottage.

No words were spoken as Lyra’s hoof moved in-between Dash’s legs. The pegasus shuddered and groaned as her marehood began to moisten rapidly from the quick, expert stroking of Lyra’s hoof.

It moved back and forth quicker and quicker. Dash let out a squeal of affection as her pussy began to grow wetter and wetter, then groaned as relief swept over her body.

“Lyra, I love you.” she gasped in the aftermath of the orgasm.

“It’s your turn.” breathed Lyra. She spread her legs invitingly.

Dash leaned her head down in-between Lyra’s legs, the mare’s dripping pussy inches from her face. Her small tongue flickered out and penetrated the folds of the mare’s vagina quickly, eliciting soft moans and grunts from the squirming unicorn. Faster and faster her tongue swirled around the passionate juices of the quivering mare until Dash could feel hooves pressing down on the back of her head.

“Dash, I’m going to-going to-” said Lyra before her words vanished into a loud moan of euphoria.

Dash sat up and wiped the juices from her mouth. The two kissed as they held one another amongst the sound of rain beating against the glass of the cottage’s windows.

“So what are we?” asked Dash to Lyra.

“Dash, you’re in too much pain for new love. But when you get lonely, I’m here for you.” explained Lyra. “When the time is right, we can come together as lovers.”

“But it’s just sex for now?” blurted Dash.

“Just sex.” smiled Lyra. “But once you heal, it can become something more.”

“That sounds good to me.” smiled Dash appreciatively.

They embraced once more as the storm outside began to clear.
