Chapter 1: Old Memories

The sun was shining high in the sky. Its rays of warmth illuminated the green landscape. It was a clear, warm and sunny day, beautiful enough that many would spend the day outdoors and bask in its glory. Which is exactly what’s gonna happen with the students of Canterlot High. Today, the students were on their way for a school trip to Camp Everfree.

Everyone was excited to go, including the Mane 7. However, it came as a surprise when they found out another school was joining them. It also surprised them when they heard the students joining them are from Canterlot Technical Institute, a private high school for boys.

A few of the CHS students thought that they might act like the students at Crystal Prep. But in reality, most of them are mild-mannered, far from the perceived snootiness that those from Crystal Prep were known for. Though, it was a bit difficult for the CHS students to see past it considering the mode of transportation that’s driving right next to them. The CTI students’ bus was this huge black and red bus that had a picture of a raven on the side. It was big enough to be like one of those buses that drive off to places that are 4 to 6 hours away.

“Ooooh! I am so nervouscited!!!” Pinkie said, bouncing on her seat.

“That makes all of us, sugarcube,” AJ added. “It’s not every day we get to go to Camp Everfree as a class. Ah’m definitely gonna pass on this story to those who couldn’t make it.”

“Yeah, I betcha this trip will be awesome!” Rainbow Dash chuckled.

“Let’s not forget we the many hours of sunbathing I could catch up on. I simply cannot go home as pale as I am now, darlings,” Rarity said, looking at her snow white skin.

“That’s not true, Rarity. You look nice,” Fluttershy said.

“I heard that at the end of this trip, we’re supposed to make something to remember our wonderful experience. What do you think would be a good memento, Sunset?” Twilight asked. However, for some reason, she didn’t respond. “Sunset?”

Again, no answer. Sunset’s eyes were fixated on one of the windows of the CTI bus. For her, it was like a feeling of deja vu. She swore the silhouette looked familiar to her.

“Hey, Earth to Sunset, Twilight’s talking to you,” Rainbow yelled slightly.

“Huh, what?” Sunset asked, snapping out of her trance. “Sorry, what was it you said?”

“Is something wrong, Sunset? Is something bothering you?” Twilight asked

“Oh, Uh- one of the students in that bus looked familiar to me but I don’t know why.”

“You mean you might’ve known them from somewhere before?” Rarity asked.

“It’s possible, but I’m not sure,” Sunset said, lightly scratching her head. Just then, their thoughts were interrupted by the sound of loud music coming from the CTI bus. And as if it didn’t get more surprising, the students in the CTI bus started singing along to the song.

“Sounds like they’re having a blast, lucky bastards,” Rainbow said.

“Y’all would think they’re in some kind of singin’ group,” AJ said.

“I’ll say. I got a feeling this is gonna be the BEST… FIELD TRIP… EVER!!!” Pinkie exclaimed before squealing.

“Settle down, Pinkie. We’re almost there, so let’s not celebrate just yet. We’ve yet to reach our destination, so the last thing we need is you jumping up and down the walls,” Luna said.

“Oopsies. Sorry, Vice-Principal Luna,” Pinkie said with her innocent smile.

“Who are you trying to fool, sis? You know you’re just as excited as I am about re-visiting the camp after all these years,” Principal Celestia said, nudging Luna playfully.

“Shh, not in front of the students,” Luna whispered.

“Fair enough.” Celestia shrugged

After about a few more minutes, the buses both arrived at the camp. And at the entrance, a single young lady was there to greet the students. All the students from CHS were the first to step off. Celestia and Luna walked over to greet the young lady.

“Hello there, everybody. Welcome to Camp Everfree,” the young lady said.

“Hello!” The schools replied simultaneously.

“Wow, nice to see such enthusiasm.” She chuckled with delight, “Allow me to introduce myself. I am Gloriosa Daisy, proud owner of Camp Everfree.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Gloriosa,” Principal Celestia said. “And it’s so wonderful to be back after all these years.”

“Ah yes, I’ve heard a lot about you two and the magnificent sundial you made for this camp,” Gloriosa said.

“It was a memorable day for the both of us.” Luna chuckled.

“And I take it there are some more students that will be joining us?” Gloriosa asked, noticing the CTI bus parked next to the CHS bus.

“Oh yes, that’s right. There are some students from Canterlot Technical Institute that were selected to join us on the trip. They wanted to come out here to escape the pressures of the loud city life. It will be a great opportunity for them to unwind out in the great outdoors.”

Next thing they know, the CTI school bus opens up. And out walks the seven students, along with the headmaster. Luna recognized the headmaster as her husband, Principal Sombra. Right behind him were three familiar faces that Luna and Celestia instantly recognized. First was the student who resembled a younger version of Sombra. The second student was a boy with long red hair and snow white skin. His eyes were like sapphires and underneath his eyes were what looked like scars. His body looked built, but he was slightly skinny at the same time.

Celestia felt like her world was turned upside down when she saw one of the boys. And this one particular boy that was standing next to the one with long red hair. He had light yellow skin with orange hair and purple eyes just like hers. He was slightly shorter than the red-haired boy and had a skinny figure.

“I never expected to see you here of all places. It’s good to see you again,” the boy with orange hair called out. Celestia gasped.

“Heat Blitz? Is that you?” Celestia asked. She was in awe at the sight of her younger son.

“It’s great to see you again, mom,” he replied running over to her. Celestia opened up her arms and wrapped her arms around her son.

“Likewise, my son.”

“Principal Celestia, you never told us you were a mother,” Rarity said, surprised.

“Well, now you know. Heat Blitz is my youngest.” Celestia said, “I rarely got to spend time with him because of my busy schedule. But, he’s my precio-” As her sight drifted around, her eyes caught another familiar sight. She hadn’t seen him in a long time yet she still recognizes his red hair anywhere. Tears began to well in her eyes as she struggled to process all her emotions. “E-Eternal Flames?”

The one called Eternal Flames turns his attention to Celestia. She instantly runs over to him and wraps her arms around him tightly. Eternal’s eyes widened from the surprise hug.

“Uh…” was all he could muster to say.

“E-Eternal, don’t you recognize me? It’s me, your mother.” Celestia said.

“Really? I didn’t know that,” Eternal said. Celestia was confused herself. How can her other son not know who she is?

“Eternal, how can you not recognize our mom?” Heat Blitz spoke up. “We grew up with her.”

“I-I… I honestly don’t know.” Eternal replied. Just then, he gets minor headache, followed by a series of past memories flooding his mind. He grunted in pain a little.

“Eternal, what’s wrong? Are you okay?” Celestia asked.

“Just a minor headache, I’ll be fine,” he insisted, gripping his head. “I just need to sit down.”

Celestia wasn’t the only one who instantly recognized him. Sunset also took notice of him. The second she laid eyes on him, her eyes lit up like a christmas tree.

“Sunset, what’s wrong? You look like you’ve just witnessed something divine,” Rarity said.

“I… I’ll tell you and the others later,” Sunset said. ‘Is it really him? But how? He couldn’t have known about the portal. Or is he originally from this world?’ she thought to herself. Maybe I’ll find out soon if I can talk to him.

After gathering her thoughts, the rest of the CTI students followed their Principal and gathered together with CHS. The girls all got a pretty good look at the remaining students: The 4th male student had messy, black hair with aqua blue skin. His shirt and pants were different shades of blue with the top being faded light blue and his pants being dark blue. And he had brown eyes.

The boy next to him had light yellow skin and spikey blonde hair. He had on a short-sleeved brown shirt with two chest pockets and had on blue jeans. His eyes looked like a faded green color just like Gaara’s Naruto.

Next to him was a boy who had minty green skin and brown eyes. His shirt was a regular green color, a little darker than his skin. His pants were an even darker shade of green, but his hair was a silver color.

And lastly, the 7th student had tan skin and hazel eyes with dark brown, messy hair. His body was built similar to Big Macintosh. He wore a black t-shirt with a sticker of an erupting volcano on the front and wore this blue opened vest with chest pockets and had on blue jeans.

“I trust you had a safe journey here, too, sir?” Gloriosa asked.

“Of course. I figured my students deserve a little time away from the city life and spend a little time basking in mother nature,” Sombra said.

“Great! Now then, everyone, follow me! We have a lot to see and do and so little time.” Gloriosa had everyone follow her to the center of the camp and then cleared her throat. “Okay everyone, how are you all doing today?”

Everyone cheered in reply, minus one particular individual. “Great! Now then, for the sake of good ol’ Camp Everfree, we shall host different camp activities and if anyone has an idea for which activity they would like to do, please let me know! Because, for this entire week, it’s all about you!” she finished.

“Ooh! How about Rock Climbing!”

“What about a water balloon fight!”

“Ooh, Ooooh! A nice hike!”

Various people in the crowd all blurted these ideas out. “You got it!” Gloriosa said.

“A swimming race,” the boy with spikey, blonde hair said.

“Sounds like a plan!” Gloriosa replied.

“Oh, what about open mic karaoke?” Heat Blitz asked. “Our principal was kind enough to bring a karaoke machine.”

“Absolutely!” Gloriosa said cheerfully.

“Hey girls, don’t you think she’s taking on way too many ideas?” Sunset asked.

“I’m not even sure she can handle that many activities,” Twilight said.

“Well, I reckon she has a plan for all that.” Applejack mused.

“I certainly hope you’re right, darling,” Rarity said, concerned.

After jotting down a list of camp activities, Gloriosa moved on by getting a basket full of these different colored pieces of paper. “Alright everyone, pick a card and find the partner who’ll be your tent buddy,” she said.

One at a time, each student picked out their colored piece of paper. Each student searched to find their tent buddy and started pairing up. The only one who didn’t have one was the boy with spikey blonde hair, but he didn’t seem to care.

“Hey, Spark Burst!” Heat Blitz called out, getting his lonely friend’s attention.

“What is it,” he asked.

“Where’s your partner, didn’t you get one?” Heat asked.

“No. two people cannot be paired if the numbers are odd. Therefore, I shall be sleeping all on my own,” Spark stated, getting ready to pitch his tent.

“Oh boy. Uh, Gloriosa! Spark Burst doesn’t have anyone to be his tent buddy,” Heat called out. Gloriosa walked over to the two and mused for a moment, humming as she thought a solution.

“I suppose there’s no harm or foul in making exceptions.” She said, “Spark Burst, you’ll be paired up with Heat Blitz and his partner.”

“Thank you, ma’am.” Spark sighed as he gives Heat Blitz a high five, “Come Heat, let’s go get things set up.”

“Right! See ya, Eternal,” Heat said, waving at his older brother. Eternal waved back and kept on searching for his partner. Then all of a sudden, he felt something wrap around his neck, causing him to turn quickly to his side and saw the guy who looked like Sombra, only younger.

“Shadow Force, you almost gave me a heart attack,” Eternal said, trying not to yell.

“Lighten up, couz. Check it out,” Shadow Force showed him his paper, which was the same color as Eternal’s. “You and are gonna be tent buds for the rest of the week. Pretty cool, huh?”

“Hmm… yup,” Eternal agreed.

“Now, come on! The sooner we get this tent pitched, the sooner we can WOW the crowd!” Shadow said, patting his back a little too hard.

“Mmmph!” Eternal grunted. “Your high-lifting spirit never ceases to amaze me.”

Later on, after everyone was partnered up and the tents were all pitched up, the Mane 7 decided to have a little girl talk at the campfire. Sunset still had some explaining to do because of her recent behavior and she needed to get it off her chest.

“Alright, Sunset, tell us. What’s on your mind?” Twilight asked.

“I’m not sure if it’s just my imagination, but I think I’ve met one of the CTI students before. I don’t know if it’s him or not, but before I came to this world… there was this unicorn colt I met when I was just a filly. He and I did a lot of things together. But when I got my letter of acceptance to Princess Celestia’s school, I had to make a tough decision to leave. And now, I think I’m going crazy because one of those students looks exactly like my friend from Equestria,” she explained.

“Which one of them is it?” Twilight asked.

“Eternal Flames. And I’m not joking. I recognized those scars under his eyes,” Sunset said.

“Well, darling, if you say it’s him, then why don’t you just go talk to him? I’m sure he’d remember his own childhood friend. It never hurts to try,” Rarity implied.

“She’s right, Sunset. Go and say “hi” to him,” Fluttershy insisted.

“Well… okay, I’ll give it a shot,” Sunset said.

Sunset walked around the campground towards the lake, darting her eyes back and forth. She tried her best to find her supposed childhood friend. Thankfully, luck was on her side and found Eternal Flames sitting at the docks, skipping stones. Curiosity filled her mind as she remembered him or rather the Heat Blitz she knew. She didn’t know if he was the one she knew.

She approached Eternal and tapped him on the shoulder. “Hey, mind if I sit here?” she asked.

“Go right ahead,” Eternal replied, skipping another stone. Sunset sat down next to him. But now that she was there, she didn’t know what to say. She felt like she was just making things awkward between them.

“So, uh… anything new?” she asked. ‘Wow, that was pathetic,’ she thought.

“If you count that surprise hug from my supposed mother, then yes,” he said.

“Why is that?” Sunset asked.

“Well, I never really knew my mother when I was little. I lived my entire life with my father. Everything was fine at first. But then… well, something terrible happened when I was in my early teens and it caused a lot of bad blood between me and my father. I had to make a tough choice and leave him, my brothers, my sister-in-law and my niece behind. Somehow ended up here in this strange world where I--” then he stopped and slammed his hand in front of his lips.

“This strange world, what do you mean?” Sunset asked.

“Uh, it’s probably best I don’t tell you. You wouldn’t understand,” Eternal said.

“Come on, there’s no need to hide anything. You can tell me,” Sunset insisted.

“I can’t. It’d just sound like some half-assed story a child could come up with,” he said. Then, for some reason, he looked over at Sunset and immediately. “Wait a second, you look familiar.”

“You mean, you remember me?” Sunset asked, feeling her smile brighten.

“Uh, yeah, I think so. I never forget a face, especially one this cute and beautiful,” he said, making Sunset blush. Eternal then realized what he said and blushed a little himself. “Uh, sorry, I didn’t mean to sound like I was flirting.” he turned away in embarrassment.

“N-No, no, it’s fine. I’m flattered you think I’m pretty and cute,” she stuttered a bit. “Listen, if you ever want to talk, just let me know. I’ll be there if you need me.”

“Thanks, whoever you are.” Eternal said as he got up, “Come to think of it, you do remind me of someone, an old friend of mine.”

I was right! It IS him!’ Sunset thought to herself. “That’s sweet. Anyways, I’m gonna head back over with the girls. And before I forget… my name is Sunset,” she said, getting up to her feet.

“Eternal Flames,” he said, extending his hand for a handshake. Sunset, however, had other plans and surprised him with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. She winked at him and ran back over to the campfire. Eternal just stood there and placed a hand on the cheek Sunset kissed.

Sunset walked back to her friends, standing around a campfire formation. They were laughing and shooting the breeze. As Sunset neared them, Twilight Sparkle was the first to notice.

“Hey Sunset,” Twilight called as Sunset sat down with them, “where were you? We were going to practice making a campfire.”

“So, how’d it go with Eternal? Did he remember you?” Rainbow asked.

“I think he might but… I don’t know. He did say I sounded familiar to him.”

“Yippee! That’s great! And I have a feeling the best is coming after he remembers you,” Pinkie winked, teasingly.

“Pinkie! Dog gone, that’s her childhood friend, not friend with benefits!” AJ said.

“Buuut, it could happen!” Pinkie insisted.

“Uh… let’s not go that far,” Sunset said. ‘At least, not yet anyways.’ she thought.

“Well darling, I’m sure he’ll come around. Just give it time and he’ll come to you.” Rarity chimed, resting a hand on her shoulder.

“Yeah, but in the meantime, we’d better get some shut-eye. Tomorrow, we’ve got loads of cool activities to do!” Rainbow said.

“That’s right. We don’t want to be late for the camp activities. I guess I’ll go to sleep, too,” Fluttershy said.

The rest of the girls agreed and wished each other good night. All of them quickly got up and walked back to the campgrounds and went inside their tents, getting ready to catch a few Z’s.

Morning had rolled by in no time and the first to wake up was Twilight. She let out a yawn and sat up, opening up her eyes. She gasped in shock to see everything in her room, including her dog, Spike, being lifted off the ground by some magic force.

“U-Uh, S-S-Sunset?” Twilight asked.

“Mmm, not now, mom, 5 more minutes,” she groaned, reaching out instinctively for an alarm, but ended up falling off her bed. “OOF!” she grunted before getting up and rubbing her head. “Ow, what in the he-” as she opened up her eyes, she stopped mid-sentence and was surprised at the sight she was beholding. “T-Twilight, what’s going on?!

“I… I have no idea!” Twilight said, getting nervous. “Oh, I just hope it’s not all… her doing!”
