It was a cold winter’s night as Cheerilee walked past the schoolhouse. Snow drifted down from the thick clouds above and the wind played with her mane. She was wrapped up in a decent sized cloak, but even that couldn’t stop the cold wind that plagued the skin under her coat. She looked up the hill at the silent school and sighed, walking further down the snow-covered path. The snow was so thick on the ground that every step that she made sent a cold shiver through her spine.
The foals were really all she had. She could still picture them in the fall; running and playing in the leaves. Now they were gone, home, warm by the fire and spending time with their families. A slight smile appeared on her face. “It’s good that the young ones have families to return to, but...” She frowned. “where does that leave me?”
Cheerilee looked to the town, where colorful lights illuminated the streets; telltale signs that Hearth’s Warming Eve was here. Ponyville was always pretty this time of year. A small smile formed as she eyed the beautiful sight before her. It was always hard to wear a frown around this time of year, but seeing that all the streets were long since abandoned reminded her of her loneliness. With a slight frown, she descended the hill and travelled towards the town.
It had been long week of sitting at home, drinking hot cocoa alone every night. At first, she felt happy for finally having some time off to herself, but as days slowly went by, her bliss depleted itself and she became a sort of empty shell. Nopony to hold her, or talk to. The stress of work and her students helped her forget that she was alone.
Once she had reached outskirts of Ponyville, she noticed its empty streets and closed up shops. “Why did I think I would find anypony here?” she mumbled and shrugged. “Well, I guess it’s better than staying home alone again.” She continued her trot through town, while staring at the wonderful lights and decoration on each house.
“The ponies here really do go all out on their decoration...” She looked over at Sugarcube Corner and rolled her eyes. “but somepony seems to overdo it every year.”
This year nothing had changed. Pinkie Pie had stuck random pine trees all over the rooftop with lights and ornaments hanging off of every limb. There wasn’t an inch of the store that wasn’t covered by lights, wreaths, or any other kind of decorative object. She giggled. “I have to give her credit for for putting so much effort into it, but I’d hate to be her when the Cakes see their power bill.”
After looking around at all the decorative houses across Ponyville, the wind and snow picked up. She turned around and began her slow trot home with chattering teeth. “I better get home soon before I freeze to death.”
She had managed to reach the outer edge of town, but by now the storm was so bad that she couldn’t see the hoof in front of her face. She frantically looked around to find a place where she could escape the storm’s harsh winds. Luckily, she spotted two lights shaped like rectangles. She galloped as fast as she could toward the lights, and eventually reached a porch that creaked as she crossed it to the door. She knocked loudly, several times, yelling, “Please let me in!” There was a voice from the inside.
“Wait, I’ll be there in a sec!” What followed was a series of quick hoof steps. Then, the door made a few clicking sounds before it slowly opened, allowing Cheerilee to gallop inside.

Berry Punch was seated behind the bar counter, lazily using one of her unoccupied stools. She sighed with a small frown while circling the edge of her glass of wine with her hoof. This time of year was always dull for her. She rarely had any patrons come in during the week, and when they did, most would sit at the tables and ignore her attempts to be friendly. They would order their drink, sit quietly, and leave without a single word.
She frowned more at the thought. She loved talking to the patrons about their lives. Everypony always had an interesting story to share, or a joke they wanted to tell. There was never a dull moment in her bar before Hearth’s Warming Eve week. She had dreaded that week, knowing that even her regulars were going to be spending it with their families.
She had thought about not opening up tonight, and just sit by the fire with a nice glass of wine. “Am I just desperate for attention, or am I just lonely?” She sighed again. Still continuing her motions around the glass, she looked at her old cuckoo clock. The hands were at twelve, and Berry noticed the strength of the wind outside of her window. “I doubt there will be anypony coming in now, especially with the way the storm is picking up out there.”
She got up from her stool, trotted around the bar, and locked the front door. As she was getting ready to put out the fire, a loud knock and cry of help called out from behind the door. Berry jumped at the sound, and shouted to the unknown pony, “Wait, I’ll be there in a sec!” She rushed over to door unlock it, but, as she slowly opened it, Berry was pushed against the wall as the pony shoved her way inside.
Berry pushed the door off of her and slammed it. “Hey! What the...“ In front of her was a magenta-coated mare. Berry stood there for a moment with her mouth agape. She stared at Cheerilee’s flanks, her eyelids half open in a seductive look, lost in her own thoughts.

Cheerilee was rubbing the sides of her body, shivering and taking in her surroundings. It was a typical rectangular room with several glossed wooden tables spread throughout, and a long bar counter top with multiple stools beside it. Behind the bar was a large rack full of different types of alcoholic drinks. She turned and looked back at fire, sighing. Great! I am in a bar. It’s a good thing that it's storming out. What would the parents think if they caught their fillies and colts’ school teacher in here?
Berry returned, carrying a big blanket on her back. “Would you mind taking off your coat? I don't want to get this wet.”
Cheerilee nodded, and proceeded with the request. Once it was off, Berry went behind her and wrapped the large sheet around Cheerilee so that her head would rest above it. She walked in front of Cheerilee and looked her over.
“That should be more comfortable,” Berry said with a grin.
“Tha...” Cheerilee was cut off by Berry's hoof on her lips.
“No, no, none of that now. I said that it was my pleasure, so no thanks are necessary,” Berry said, still grinning.
Cheerilee gave a sheepish smile that made Berry's insides melt.

Berry face hoofed herself. “I forgot about your cocoa.”
“You don't have to trouble yourself with that. I’m perfectly warm with just this.” The teacher shifted in her seat. “I’m not thirsty, anyway.”
“Alright, so long as you're sure.” Berry raised an eyebrow at her.
“Yeah, I'm sure,” Cheerilee said, reassuringly.
There was an awkward pause, with Cheerilee and Berry staring at the fire. The strong winds outside the bar caused creaks to sound throughout, and the branches of trees scraped against the walls. Cheerilee sat in her chair, quietly hypnotized by the fire.
I wish she would say something, Berry thought. I guess I’m going to have to start this.
“Soooooo...what were you doing outside this late at night in the middle of a storm?” Berry asked while she grabbed a chair, and sat down a few feet away from Cheerilee.
“Well, it wasn't storming when I went out, but I don't really want to talk about it. Let's just say this time of year kind of depresses me.” Cheerilee grumbled.
“Oh, I see. I was just curious.” Berry pondered for moment. “Well, I know how you feel. These holiday weeks usually depress me too.”
“Why is that?” Cheerilee asked.
“Well, business starts getting slow.” Berry moped.
Cheerilee huffed at her. “So what, are you afraid you'll lose bits?”
“No...“ Berry felt taken aback by her snide remark. “It's not the money part I care about. I enjoy socializing with many of the interesting ponies that come in here. If you were to write down the amount of stories I have been told. It could fill the shelves of the Canterlot library, twice!” Berry, in the midst of her speech, had stood on her hind legs with her forelegs stretched out in a dramatic pose.
Cheerilee stared wide eyed at her.
Following the now awkward silence, Berry sat back down. “Though... I can't say I remember all of them. Whenever my usual patrons come in, I can't help but drink with them.”
“Isn't that a little risky?”
“Yeah, if you don't know what you're doing.” Berry said confidently. “I never let myself get too drunk around them, nor do I let them drink more than their fair share. My limit for anypony is four shots of any strong drink, and that's it.”
Cheerilee had a disheartened look,“ I'm sorry for being rude. From what I've heard, most bar owners were about making money and letting their patrons do whatever they want. I assumed- ”
“Don't worry about it.” Berry waved a hoof. “I know a few bars that are like that. A lot of bar owners have a bad reputation with letting their patrons do whatever they want, but, to me, running a bar is about having a place where older ponies spend time to have fun and forget their worries for a night. At least without it ending in a bar fight, but if there so happens to be one....” Berry pumped her chest. “I’m no pushover; If they were to start it, I'll be sure to end it with a black eye and their flanks out of my bar.”
“Huh, you are an interesting pony Ms... ”
“Berry Punch!” The bar mare grinned. “And welcome to ‘Spiked Punch.’ The pride and joy of my life.”
Cheerilee laughed. “Indeed it is. Well, thank you for the warm welcome. I can tell you take very good care of your bar.” She looked around. “ There isn't a single spot that isn't clean or damaged.”
Berry beamed with pride. “Thanks. I should take care of it, or working my flank off at Sweet Apple Acres for five years would have been pointless.”
“Wow! You didn't take out a loan to buy this place?” Cheerilee asked, staring at the impressive mare.
“Nope.” Berry answered, still beaming. “I figured that if I was going to own my own bar, I would rather have full ownership than deal with the stress of paying the monthly fees to the bank.”
Cheerliee nodded. “I’m impressed, Ms. Punch, in more ways than one.”
“I’m glad you approve.” Berry returned the nod, with a sly smile. “So, since I shared a bit about myself, I think you're obligated to tell me why you were wandering outside by yourself.”
Cheerilee sighed. “Yes, I suppose I am. I figured you were going to get me to talk eventually. You sneaky mare.”
“You know it...Ms. Cheerilee.” Berry's sly smile turned into a grin as Cheerilee's eyes widen at the statement.
“How do you know who I am?”
Berry giggled. “Who doesn't know Ponyville's finest teacher since you replaced your mother?”
Cheerilee blushed. “Well, thank you. I didn’t realize that I was so popular. It was always my mother who seemed to grab everyone’s attention.”
“Yeah, she was pretty cool. She was always so full of energy, and cheerful around us when I was filly,” Berry said with a calm smile.
“Even after my father left us, she was like that until she passed away.” Cheerilee added, then sighed. “She took care of me, and teached with a smile on her face, all by herself.” She turned her head away from Berry and mumbled, “I don’t know how she did it.”
Berry got up next to Cheerilee and gently pulled her muzzle to face her. “Hey...“ Berry began with a soft smile. “I don’t think she was alone.”
Cheerilee stared back a little confused and uncomfortable at how close Berry was to her. “What do you mean?”
“Well, she always had you and I think that’s what made her happy.”
Memories of her and her mother spending time together came pouring into her head. There was always a smile on her mother’s face. “Yo- you think so?” Cheerilee asked, tearing up.
Berry nodded. “I know so.”
A small tear slid down Cheerilee’s muzzle as she removed the blanket and hugged Berry. “Thank you. That means a lot.” She pulled back from Berry and sniffled softly.
“You’re welcome.” Berry said quietly, and patted her back assuredly. “You gonna be alright?”
Cheerilee sat back down wiping a tear from her face. “Yeah, I’ll be fine.” She looked up at Berry. “You have any tissues?”
“I do. I’ll go get you some.” Berry quickly went behind the bar, grabbed some tissues, and a trash can.
She is being too nice to me. Cheerilee thought as she watched Berry. I wonder if she...
“Here ya go.” Berry hoofed them to Cheerilee. She nodded, blew her nose a couple of times, and threw them away into Berry’s trash can.
“I must look pretty pathetic, huh?” Cheerliee asked, nose still stuffy.
“No, quite the opposite, actually.” Berry said as she sat and scooted closer to Cheerilee. “I have ponies come in here who cry about the most pointless things. One mare came in a week ago, had a few drinks and began crying something about ‘wishing they could live in the human world’.” She slapped her knee and laughed.
“Wha...” Cheerilee bursted out laughing. “The human world? What in the name of Celestia is that?”
Berry smiled at Cheerilee. “I have no idea, but she was pretty drunk. So, I think she was just making it up.”
Cheerilee’s laugh calmed and she nodded. “Yeah, more than likely.”
“Which reminds me...” Berry got up from her seat, trotted behind the bar, and stood up on her hind legs. She moved her hoof across the alcohol rack, until she spotted the bottle she wanted and grabbed it. As she returned to her seat, Cheerilee watched Berry awkwardly. “Ummm, what is that?”
“This, Ms. Cheerilee, is a 15 year old bottle of Applejack Daniels whiskey.” Berry said, grinning as she held the bottle up to Cheerilee.
“And we are going to... “
“Drink it?” Cheerilee took the bottle from her hooves and examined it as Berry spoke. “Yes, we’ll have some.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea. I’m a school teacher; It’s frowned upon for somepony in my position to drink.” Cheerilee said.
“Aww, come on, live a little. It’s not like anypony is gonna find out. There is a snowstorm outside. They’re all at home tucked away in their beds. It’s only you and me in here.”
“Yeah, but you’re the one I’m afraid of.” Cheerilee smirked.
Berry snorted. “Hah! Oh, alright then. I see how it is. You don’t trust me?” she brought one of her hooves to her heart. “That hurts me right here.”
Cheerilee giggled. “No, that’s not it. It’s just that I have never had alcohol.”
Berry waved a hoof at her. “Don’t worry about it. I’ve dealt with new drinkers before.”
“I don’t know...“ Cheerilee stared at the bottle then looked up at Berry with a soft smile. “Alright, I’ll try some, but just one glass.” She held up a hoof to Berry.
“Great!” Berry shouted. “I’ll get some glasses.” trotted behind the bar again for the shot glasses. Cheerilee shook her head. “You seem a little too enthusiastic about this.”
“Besides socializing, alcohol is another one of my passions, and sharing it with others is a pleasure.” Berry grinned from ear-to-ear as she returned with the shot glasses.
They pulled up their chairs to the glossened table behind them. Cheerilee hoofed the bottle over to Berry. She unscrewed the top off with her mouth, and poured the whiskey into the two glasses. They both lifted up their glasses, toasting to one another.
“So what should we drink to?” Cheerilee asked
Berry tapped her chin. “Hmmm...how about to the snowstorm?” She posed the suggestion comically.
“I like that.” Cheerilee clinked her glass against Berry’s. ”To the snowstorm.” She watched as Berry tipped her head back and chugged the shot. Cheerilee followed suit and quickly shook her head, shivering in response to the strength of the alcohol. “That’s really strong, but has a nice, sweet apple aftertaste.”
“Oh, yeah that’s Applejack Daniels.” Berry said smacking her lips.
Cheerilee had her glass up in the air, staring at it intently. “You know what? I think I’ll have another.”
Berry’s eyes widen. “Really?”
“Mhm, it was good, and I think I deserve to let loose for one night.”
“YEAH! Now we’re talking.” Berry grinned.
She poured themselves another two glasses of whiskey.
The teacher downed the liquid quicker than before. “Hey, It didn’t even burn that time, but I still tasted the apple.” Cheerilee giggled.
Berry chuckled. “Yeah, that’s your mouth going numb. You’re already tipsy.”
Cheerilee looked at Berry with a goofy smile as she set the glass on the table. “I didn't know being tipsy would feel this good. I would like another.” She slid the glass back to Berry.
Berry nodded and poured two more. “I am glad you’re enthusiastic about it, but one more and that will be enough. You drink anymore and you'll feel feel horrible in the morning.”
“I understand.“Cheerilee looked at the floor, downtrodden, but raised her head quickly with a wide grin. “You know, Berry. If I had met you on the street I would have never thought you were a bartender.” She drank her final shot, set it on the table, and swayed a bit. “Once again...very tasty.”
Berry followed her lead, but was more resilient. “Thank you.” The bar mare blushed. “When you’ve been running a bar for six years, you pick up a few tricks of the trade.”
Cheerilee tried to nod but toppled over backwards/ Berry rose from her chair quickly and caught her. “Your bar’s spinning in circles, Ms. Berry.” She rolled her head to face Berry. Her left eyelid was partially open, with a sly smile on her face as she asked, “Did you install a merry-go-round?” she laughed whole-heartedly.
Berry shook her and giggled. “Somepony can’t handle their alcohol.” She lifted Cheerilee up straight.
“No, no I can not.” Cheerilee turned and looked at Berry. “You...live alone, Ms. Berry?”
Berry raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, I do, actually. Why do you ask?”
“Well, because I live alone...“ She hung her head low over the table. “and I started feeling secluded.” She paused, pondering her thoughts. “Have you ever felt like that?” Cheerilee turned her head to look at Berry.
“Ummm...Yeah, sometimes. I usually stay busy throughout the year, so I don’t think about it much.” Berry sighed. “ Though when the holidays come around, business slows, and I get that feeling.” She rubbed the edge of her shot glass.
“Yeah, that’s why I was roaming outside so late.” Cheerilee waved a hoof uncontrollably. “Every year, I would spend Hearth’s Warming Eve with my mother, but this year...“ Tears fell onto the table as she looked away from Berry, trying to hide in a desperate attempt to save face.
Berry stood up on her hind legs and pulled Cheerilee into a hug with her head leaning against her shoulder. “ I know, I know,” Berry said quietly. “But, if it helps, you’re not alone tonight.”
Cheerilee pulled away from Berry Punch and stared into her eyes.
