“Welcome, sir!”
As soon as the stallion locked eyes with the creature standing at the counter, he quickly looked back at the door he walked in through, stumbling over his thoughts as he awkwardly began taking steps backwards. “I’m sorry,” he said as sweat began to trickle down his eyebrow. “I must have the wrong address.”
“But sir, were you not looking for Seppen’s cakes and creamery?”
“No--I mean, I was, but--I need to go!”
With his tail tucked between his legs, the stallion ran back out the door, probably already halfway down the block by the time the door slammed shut, ringing the bell above the entrance. This had to be the third pony today that took off running the minute he walked through the door, and for someone trying to run a business, this was about as bad of luck as anyone could hope for. If Seppen didn’t turn a profit, his entire livelihood would be shut down, but how was he supposed to make that happen when everypony who looked at him ran away like their lives were in danger?
“Why are they all so afraid of me?” he asked himself, plopping his head down on the counter in sadness. “I know that there aren’t many of us in Ponyville yet, but is there some reason for them to be this scared of changelings?”
That had to be why everypony was running away. Once they got a good look at Seppen’s appearance, their first thought was probably how scary he must appear, and in his opinion, he was probably a lot less scary than changelings from other hives. He had hoped that by moving to Ponyville, he could create a new life, see the world, and be his own boss all at once, but so far his dream was beginning to seem like some kind of nightmare. He knew that moving to a completely foreign place was difficult and that starting a business was even harder, but he still had hope that he would be able to push through somehow and live his dreams. What he really needed right now, though, were customers, and those seemed few and far between.
*Ding, ding, ding!*
“Oh, g-good afternoon, sir! Welcome to Seppen’s cakes and creamery!”
Walking through the door, however, was a black stallion wearing a funny blue outfit covered in yellow lightning bolts along with a pair of fogged up goggles over his eyes. Of course, the moment he would take them off would also be the moment when he’d run away, but luckily, he kept them on, electing blurry vision over the two seconds it would take for him to adjust his goggles. In fact, rather than using his eyesight at all, he was navigating through the shop by smell, sniffing counters, shelves and basically anywhere his muzzle took him.
“Is there… anything I can help you find today?”
“Huh? Oh, don’t worry about me! This is an ice cream place, right? My goggles are just a little foggy since I’ve been flying through some snow clouds, but they’ll adjust in a minute once they cool down a little bit.”
“Oh! Well, in that case, might I interest you in some of our ice cream selections? It sounds like your goggles could use some cool air.”
Then, with a large smile on his face, the black stallion continued to sniff around until his muzzle pulled him over to the various flavors of ice cream lined up on the side of Seppen’s countertop. “Awesome!” he replied, taking a big whiff of the variety of flavors. “It’s my little brother’s cute-ceañera tomorrow, and all of the wonderbolts are going to be throwing him a big party! Now the only problem I have left is figuring out which one to choose!”
“That sounds terrific! Are the wonderbolts like your band or something?”
The stallion, however, rather than answering his question, stood there in silence, tilting his head to the side and rubbing the back of his mane while an awkward aura filled the cool air around them. “No, not exactly. Are you… new in town, or something?”
“Yeah. I just moved in a couple of weeks ago, actually. My name is Seppen.”
“Oh, like as in Seppen’s cakes and creamery! I thought the title sounded a little funny. Anyway, my name’s Thunderlane. Pleasure to meet you!”
As Thunderlane lifted his arm over the ice cream to shake hands with the pony in front of him, however, his goggled finally began to defog, revealing that the creature in front of him wasn’t exactly quite what he had expected. Once the two of them made eye contact, Thunderlane’s pupils shot wide as he finally saw the white-colored changeling with light-blue hands reaching towards him, causing him to reflexively pull his own hand back. As Seppen was left with his hand hanging in the air, however, he couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow in offense, which Thunderlane responded to by quickly shaking the changeling’s hand along with a forced smile.
“Let me guess,” Seppen said, slowly pulling his arm back to his side with his hands on his hips. “You suddenly remembered you have somewhere you need to be.”
“What? N-no! I just… Wasn’t expecting somepony that wasn’t… a pony, I guess.”
“You mean like a changeling?” Seppen added a hiss to the end of his question, causing Thunderlane to flinch, but even though the stallion was obviously just as scared as everypony else had been up to that point, he didn’t make any quick dashes to the door.
“I’m sorry! I guess I just didn’t realize that changelings were allowed in Equestria after what happened last year.”
With a loud groan, Seppen leaned over his counter, rummaging his fingers through his crystallic blue mane before greeting Thunderlane once again with a customer service smile. “There’s been a new deal where changelings and ponies are officially allowed to immigrate to each other’s territories. It came along with Princess Twilight being tasked with reforming Queen Chrysalis.”
“Must have been a pretty big shock for you guys to find out your queen was getting reformed, huh?”
“I’m from the hive in Neighpone, about twenty-five hundred kilometers north of Equestria. We have a different queen.”
“Oh, see? That’s way better! Between you and me, Queen Chrysalis kinda gave all changelings a bad name after what she did in the royal capital.”
It appeared that Thunderlane was earnestly trying to make light-hearted jokes about the situation, but that didn’t change the fact that what he said was still extremely offensive. Queen Chrysalis gave all changelings a bad name?! Even if he were just speaking about public opinion, the very idea of his entire race being seen as lesser creatures just because of one hive--no, one changeling--was getting Seppen so heated that he felt that he would burst at any moment.
Hiding his inner rage, Seppen quickly smiled and asked, “So, are there any flavors you would like to sample, or would you prefer a pony ice cream shop?”
“That depends. Do you have strawberry banana?”
With his dull stare never leaving Thunderlane’s eyes, he lackadaisically scooped a small spoonful of a red ice cream with tiny yellow bits and placed it in a paper thimble, handing it over to the eager pegasus. Thunderlane was seemingly oblivious to Seppen’s mood as he grinned widely at the frozen desert, licking his lips before placing the whole scoop on his tongue and slurping it down with a satisfying sigh. He seemed more or less like an idiot, but for some reason, that was helping cool down Seppen’s state of mind, even though his idiocy was probably what killed the mood in the first place.
Finally, looking back up at the changeling with a sparkle in his eye, he exclaimed, “Wow! That was great! Hey, why don’t you cater for my brother’s party tomorrow? If all your desserts are as good as this, everypony in town will be coming to eat at this place!”
Seppen wanted to say no. He wanted to make one transaction and be done with Thunderlane’s goofy personality for good, but if he were to say no to such a pivotal agreement, he would be missing out on the exact customers he needed to keep his business afloat. If everypony in Ponyville were really this xenophobic when it came to changelings, he was wondering whether or not he even wanted to live in Ponyville anymore, but this was still a decision he could make after his business gave him that choice.
“A party, huh? You know I can’t transform while I’m in Equestria due to the whole agreement between nations, right?”
“I don’t think that’ll be a problem. I mean, you’ll probably get some stares, but once everypony gets to know you, it’ll be like you were born here! What do you say? Can I tell my brother you’ll be there?”
Thunderlane was smiling with so much enthusiasm that it made his face look silly, causing Seppen to crack a smile even though he was trying to fold his arms to make himself look more serious. “That depends. Are the wonderbolts going to be playing tomorrow as well?”
“Oh, we’re not a band. We’re an aerial acrobatics team, but yeah, all the wonderbolts are going to be there.”
Seppen rolled his eyes, losing all the excuses he had and finally holding out his hand as he looked Thunderlane in the eye, albeit with an unapproving expression. “I guess if this is really going to be that much of a high-profile event, then I have to be there.”
“Great!” Thunderlane exclaimed, grabbing hold of Seppen’s small hand and nearly crushing it in his masculine grip. “I’ll take chocolate, vanilla, strawberry banana, butterscotch, buttercream, butterbeer, rootbeer and mint chocolate chip cookie dough! Oh, and if you have anything else that you think they’d like, bring that too!” He had barely finished listing off his order by the time he had arrived back to the store entrance, waving at Seppen as he made his way out into the Ponyville skies once again. “Thanks, miss Seppen! I’ll see you tomorrow!”
“M-miss?!” the changeling stuttered, trying to get his words out, but by the time the words came out of his mouth, Thunderlane had already left the building, probably several stories into the air at this point. The good news was that his business would be saved, at least for now, although the bad news was that he would probably have to spend all of the next day at a stupid party with ponies giving him weird looks all day. Plus, he’d have to pretend to like that Thunderlane guy, who so far seemed to be a complete doofus.
As moronic as he was, though… he was still kind of cute…
The next day, Seppen had to arrive at the party early to make sure that everything was ready by the time the guests arrived, which actually involved a lot more preparation than he had originally anticipated. He had to make sure that the ice cream would stay freezer-fresh throughout the entire duration of the party, not to mention carrying extras in case they needed a last minute switch if somepony were to accidentally throw up into one of the ice cream tubs. He had heard that ponies did that sometimes when they’re foals, but he was still hoping that he could avoid that if at all possible. Plus, along with the ice cream flavors that Thunderlane listed off, Seppen had brought his world-famous blueberry swirl cheesecake, drizzled perfectly with melted white chocolate and frozen to perfection.
“Seppen! I’m so glad you’re here!”
The changeling was busy unloading some of his merchandise when a black stallion descended in front of him with a wide grin on his face, causing Seppen to smile to himself, knowing how embarrassed this stallion was going to be after the way he had left the day before. He honestly didn’t mind when somepony confused him to be a female, but he absolutely loved seeing the expressions on their face when they found out the truth about him.
“You know, you look way different without my goggles on. You’re a lot cuter.”
“Thanks! I appreciate it! But just for the record, I’d prefer the term ‘handsome.’”
As an added effect, Seppen threw in a seductive wink, which made Thunderlane’s eyes grow wide as his cheeks burned a bright pink. Getting called cute was enough to make him smile already, but Thunderlane’s goofy expression at that moment definitely made taking this job worth it. As Seppen waited for the pegasus’s shock to wear off, however, he nonchalantly continued to set up his frozen treats, smiling on the inside after seeing Thunderlane’s reaction.
“W-wait a second!” the stallion stammered. “Are you…?”
“Busy? Yes. Now could you help me get the ice chillers from my wagon? I think we’re going to need to cool these things down right away before they lose some of their texture.”
“Huh? Oh, right!” Leading Thunderlane to his wagon, the changeling immediately pulled out an armful worth of white brick-like objects and began setting them underneath the cartons of ice cream. “So… what are these things supposed to do?”
“They’re from Neighpone. Since I come from somewhere much colder than Equestria, we usually take as many of these ice chillers as we can whenever we migrate to warmer climates. They’re usually meant to cool down our bodies, but I use them to keep my treats ice cold, just like they just came out of the freezer. Plus, I’m not sure how foals would react if they knew I could do this.”
Without giving the stallion any warning, Seppen released his magic, sending waves of white frost soaring through the air until they collided with the tubs of icecream, freezing the lips of the tubs. Thunderlane had to duck his head to keep half of his face from becoming a popsicle, but the changeling could see just how amazed he was from Seppen’s display of magic.
“Whoa!” Thunderlane exclaimed. “What’s that?”
“Cyromancy, a type of magic only found in changelings of Neighpone. Basically it just means that I can create ice out of thin air. Kinda helps when I’m trying to travel light sometimes, but I think if I did that here, it would just freak everypony out.”
“Ohhhhh! I see. Also, I’m sorry about mistaking you for a girl. It’s just, you have a really slender figure, and I just thought--”
“Thunderlane, it’s alright!” Seppen exclaimed with a bright blush on his face, twirling his mane while trying to hold back a giggle. “Can we just... go back to getting ready for the party?”
As soon as the words came out of his mouth, however, a colt with gray fur and a light-black mane floated his way into the room, surrounded by a throng of other colts coming in behind him. “Hey, bro,” he said, looking over at Thunderlane. Apparently this was the star of the party, and sure enough, once Seppen looked over at the kids around him, they were all staring at his cutie mark, which must have been brand new. “You guys finished yet?”
“No, it’s just gonna be a little bit longer. Oh, and this is Seppen. He’s a changeling, but he’s the one who’s providing the food for you guys today, so I want you all to show him proper respect.”
Rumble followed Thunderlane’s eyes to the white creature who was trying to force a smile, but once the two of them made eye contact, Rumble fell to the floor, leaning back in shock. Of course, it was still the same everywhere Seppen went. “You’re… you’re a…”
“Hey! What did I just say about being nice?”
“You’re a guy?!” While Rumble tried to pick his jaw up from the floor, the kids around Rumble began to giggle into their hands, eliciting another blush along Seppen’s face. “Sorry! I just… you kinda look like… The party’s not ready, guys. Let’s come back later.”
The kids then all took off running while Thunderlane tried to laugh off what was, understandably, a pretty funny interaction. “Sorry about my kid brother. He can be a little clumsy with his words sometimes.”
“Oh, really? Seems like one of many aspects that runs in the family.” Thunderlane quickly held up a finger, his mouth ready to interject, but as Seppen raised an eyebrow while waiting for a response, the black stallion shrugged it off, apparently accepting Seppen’s claim. “So what kind of activities do you have planned for your brother’s big day?”
“Honestly, I don’t really have much planned. Once all his guests get here, Pinkie Pie is gonna be the one taking over all the party games. I’m mainly just here for support, but I’ll probably give him some space so he can enjoy his party with his friends.”
Seppen immediately stopped setting up the ice chillers and turned to his side, glaring at the pegasus once again. “Wait. You’re not even going to be there?”
“Nope. I’m a really supportive brother, as you can see.
“...Yeah… Because that’s definitely the word I would have used.”
“How about you, Seppen? What are you gonna do once the party gets started?”
The changeling put his finger to his lip as he contemplated deeply. “Honestly, I was just planning on staying with you the whole time and restocking the inventory whenever it got low.”
“Pinkie Pie can take care of that! Why don’t you just come up with me to my room?”
“WHAT?!” Thunderlane flinched from the sudden outburst, causing Seppen to quickly clear his throat and lower the tone of his voice. “I’m sorry. Your room?”
“Yeah! We’re both guys, so it’s not like it would be weird! C’mon. I’ve got this collection of jazz CD’s that you’ve gotta listen to!”
Seppen gulped. For a normal pony, two adult males going up to listen to smooth jazz wouldn’t be weird at all, but Seppen wasn’t like any of the other ponies here--in more ways than just his appearance. Even though this stallion seemed to behave like an oblivious airhead most of the time, there was a charm to him that made him very attractive, even to a male of a different species. What would happen if he found out that Seppen looked at him differently than normal stallions did? Would he be offended? Would he tell anypony? Would his business collapse all because he let out a stupid secret that he thought one of his clients was… charming?
“Uh… hello? Equestria to Seppen!”
Seppen blinked as soon as he saw the hand in front of him, waving back and forth to bring him back to reality. “Huh? Oh, sorry. Your room. Um… Listen.”
“HEY THUNDERLANE!” Both Seppen and Thunderlane jumped into the air from the sound coming out of nowhere, but once they had the chance to land on the ground and let their hearts get their rhythm back, Seppen noticed a pink mare ogling all the varieties of ice cream flavors. “Ooooo! You really went all out with this party, didn’t ya? Let’s see what you have here. Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry banana, butterscotch, buttercream, butterbeer, rootbeer and *gaaaaasp* is that mint chocolate chip cookie dough?! OH! OH! Who brought CHEESECAKE?!”
“Oh, hey, Pinkie Pie,” Thunderlane replied. “Yeah, it’s my brother’s big day, so I wanted to make sure he has the best cute-ceañera ever!”
So this was Pinkie Pie, the illustrious party-planner who would be taking over Thunderlane’s responsibilities. “Don’t worry, Thunder!” she responded, giving him a salute. “You’re in good hands! Ooooooo! I don’t think I’ve ever seen you here before! Wait! That means that I haven’t thrown you a welcome-to-Ponyville party yet! Oh, but I can’t right now because I have to set up for Rumble’s ultra terrific super fantastic cute-ceañera! BUT WAIT! If I were to somehow combine the two into a giant welcome to Ponyville cute-ceañera celebration spectacular, I could--”
“I… think that’s gonna be alright,” Seppen said, placing his fingers on Pinkie Pie’s lips. “I’m mainly just here to help set up.”
“Oh! You don’t need to worry about that! I’ve got it all from here, so why don’t you and Thunderlane go play somewhere else for now? You know, he has probably the best collection of jazz CD’s in Equestria!”
Seppen slapped his hand to his face, rubbing his temples as he now felt the added pressure to be alone with this stallion. That wouldn’t be a problem, though, right? After all, just because Seppen kinda liked him a little bit didn’t mean that they were going to end up doing anything, and for that matter, who said that he even had to find out? He had kept all kinds of secrets in his life, after all. It wasn’t like there was anything forcing him to come out and tell him.
Once he looked back at the stallion’s goofy face, though, he didn’t feel as confident as he was just a second ago. Thunderlane was still just as cute as ever, and if the two of them ended up in a situation where one thing led to another…
“What do you say, Seppen?” the pegasus asked with a smile on his face, causing Seppen to slouch his shoulders forward with a long-winded sigh.
“Alright… Let’s get outta here.”
Thunderlane didn’t live too far away from where the party was being held, which meant that if anything were to go wrong at the party, it would only take us a few minutes to fly back. This was especially perfect for Seppen, who really didn’t feel too comfortable being away from his job for too long, and it probably wouldn’t be too long before he’d make up an excuse to go back to the party anyway. Even though just the sight of him would probably scare the kids, however, he needed to make sure that he spent as much time making connections as possible… and also try to clear up the stereotype that he would try to eat them. That was probably important too.
“Well, here we are!” Thunderlane announced once the two of them got to his bedroom.
There really wasn’t a whole lot to it, aside from the trophies and ribbons he had won beside the pictures of various aviation events, showcasing the history of Equestrian athletics. Other than that, it was the typical dresser, closet, bed setup that accompanied basically everypony’s room, but the simplicity was actually kind of nice. It showed off Thunderlane’s personality for not needing to be a showoff while still shooting for excellence.
“So? What do you think?”
“It looks… nice?”
“Yeah, there’s not really much to it other than this,” he said, plopping down on his twin-sized bed. “Anyway, make yourself at home. I say we should probably head back down to the party in about an hour and a half, just to make sure things are still good with Pinkie Pie.”
“Are things ever not good with Pinkie Pie?”
Thunderlane put a finger to his lip as his pupils trailed off to the corner of his eyes. “Hmm… Can’t say I’ve ever seen her have any problems before. Oh! I have an idea of something we can do!”
“Let me guess. Listen to jazz?”
“Oh. How’d you know?”
Seppen rolled his eyes as he sat down on the bed beside Thunderlane, raising his eyebrows sarcastically. “Gee. I don’t know. Maybe it’s because that was one of the main selling points to get me over here in the first place?”
Pulling himself off of his bed with a giant stretch, the stallion then made his way over to a tall glass cabinet adjacent to his dresser, opening up the glass doors and perusing through the probably hundreds of albums he had stored. Pinkie wasn’t kidding when she said he had probably the best collection of Jazz CD’s in Equestria.
“So…” Seppen began as he watched Thunderlane continue to flip through the jewel cases and vinyl covers. “Is this like your hobby or something?”
“You bet! I can’t spend my whole life practicing my flying techniques with no down time at the end. I’ve found that a little bit of saxophone at the end of the day can help anypony relax after a hard day of work. Plus my dad used to play for a group called the bugle horns and wings, although funny enough, none of them knew how to play the bugle horn.”
“Were any of them unicorns?”
“...Huh… I guess I never really thought about that before. I guess that’s why they had the ‘and wings’ at the end, even though my dad was the only pegasus. Hey, you wanna hear his music?”
“Sure,” Seppen said, swinging his hands behind his head like a pillow as he laid back on Thunderlane’s bed. “It’s not like I have anything better to do anyway.”
With obvious glee all over his face, Thunderlane flipped through his vinyl records until he stumbled across one with the words “Bugle Horns & Wings” across the cover. As he pulled the record out of its case and carefully set it atop the turntable, Seppen pulled himself up just enough for him to lay on his side, propping his head up with one hand. Finally, after a few minutes of fiddling around with the needle, the record began to spin, creating a soft static at first until finally, a soft saxophone began to ring out throughout the room. Seppen honestly didn’t care much for smooth jazz, but once he heard the melodic tune coming from the turntable, he couldn’t help but sit up from where he was laying.
“This is your dad?” he asked with slight bewilderment.
“Yeah. He sounds pretty great, right?”
Seppen wanted to play aloof, but at the same time, for some odd reason, the sounds of the saxophone meshing perfectly with the piano, guitar and bass were melting his troubles away. “Yeah, he’s actually… really good.”
“He raised us right,” Thunderlane retorted, his smile fading slightly as he sat down next to Seppen at the foot of his bed, staring down at the album cover in his fingers and gripping it tightly. “You know, after the divorce between my mom and my dad, I was a little angry at both of them, but right now, I would give just about anything to see him again. I don’t think I ever saw him after my mom kicked him out of the house, although I really believed in my heart that he would come home one day.”
Seppen bit his bottom lip, dropping his own eye contact down to his feet as the two of them sat without speaking for several moments. The feeling in the air was definitely very heavy, but by the same token, the smooth sounds of the saxophone gently echoing through the room filled the changeling with peace. Lifting his head once more to check up on the stallion beside him, he noticed a small droplet of water dripping down his right cheek, which he tried to wipe away as discreetly as he could.
“Whoa, sorry to get so heavy on you, Seppen. Where did that come from, right?” Thunderlane tried to laugh it off, but there were obviously feelings that had been building up, quite possibly for years without receiving the attention they needed. Was Seppen the first creature he had ever mentioned this too? “Anyway, this is my dad’s old group. You probably want to hear somepony a little more professional.”
Thunderlane then began to get up, but Seppen quickly grabbed hold of his arm, pulling the pegasus back down with urgency in his eyes. “No… I want to hear more. I-if that’s alright with you!”
“You mean you wanna hear my dad’s music some more?”
With a small chuckle, Seppen shook his head. “I mean, yes, I do, but I really want to hear more about your father. He seems like he was a pretty important part of your life.”
“Yeah, he was the reason I decided to become a wonderbolt in the first place.” Thunderlane breathed a heavy sigh before continuing. “My dad was really hard on me growing up. At the time, I was upset that I didn’t get to relax and have fun like the other colts, but now that I’m actually grown up, I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be where I am now without my dad teaching me to be the best that I could be. I kept thinking to myself that if I became a wonderbolt, I’d see him at one of my shows. I just want to tell him that I’m grateful for everything that he did for me… and I’d ask him if he was proud of me.”
Without taking another second to think, Seppen grabbed Thunderlane’s hand, making the both of them blush before Seppen put his hand back into his own lap. “Of course your dad would be proud of you, dummy. You’ve turned out to be both a terrific athlete and a great brother. I’m sure just raising your little brother as well as you have would be proof enough of how much he’s taught you, and I know he would be proud of you.”
“Thanks, Seppen. I think I needed that.”
There was a long pause as the music in the background began to switch tracks, fading at the end of one song before the next started, making the silence seem even more deafening.
“If you don’t mind me asking,” Seppen began, “why did your parents get a divorce in the first place?”
“My mom just said that she didn’t love him anymore, and then my dad got mad and left. I don’t blame him for leaving, but… I really wish that he would have come back.”
“Is that why you collect so many Jazz CD’s?”
Thunderlane chuckled softly. “I would be lying if I said that wasn’t a part of it. I just want to show my dad my collection one day, like ‘You wouldn’t believe what I’ve got!’ Heh… But anyway…”
Without thinking again, Seppen wrapped his arms around Thunderlane’s shoulders from behind, leaning his forehead onto Thunderlane’s back as he gripped him tight. Rather than try to resist, however, Thunderland grabbed hold of Seppen’s arms, holding them closer as he nestled his head into Seppen’s shoulder, the two of them remaining motionless for several moments. Even as the song played all the way through, moving onto the next track in the playlist, Seppen and Thunderlane held each other, too comfortable to let the other go from his grip. Unfortunately, however, as all good things come to an end, Thunderlane gently pulled Seppen’s hands away from his body, leaving the two of them to stare deeply into each other’s eyes.
After another few seconds of their hearts beating softly, Seppen gulped and quietly whispered, “How much time did we have before we needed to head back?”
Thunderlane chuckled, still smiling back at the feminine changeling. “Depends on what you wanted to do.”
Seppen was now smiling back at Thunderlane, wrapping his arms around his neck once again while his fingers ran through his mane. “I think you already know what I want to do. Now, do you think we still have time?”
Thunderlane gazed deeply into Seppen’s pupils, breathing deeply before loudly gulping and nodding his head, and before they knew it, Seppen’s mouth was pressed against his, both of their eyes closing as Thunderlane’s hands ran up his back.
