You sit in a hallway of the great Crystal Palace. Everything here is made out of gemstones, and cool to the touch; it’s hardly a comfortable place to sit and wait, especially when the bench is just a slab of sapphire with a cushion on it, and doubly so when your anxiety starts getting the better of you. But you try to remind yourself once again that making it this far is an accomplishment; getting past the second interview was an impressive accomplishment in and of itself.
Your suit feels stiff around your shoulders, and your collar bites into your neck as you hunch over. This was it. The last interview. It was nothing short of amazing to consider how you even got this far. Out of a job and looking for simply anything to pay the bills, you sent a cover letter and resume to the Crystal Palace hoping to work for a few months as a janitor or something. You didn’t expect to get called in the first time, but you were. You didn’t expect to do well enough on the interview to get called in again, but you were. Tartarus, you didn’t even know what you were applying for, but everypony said that working for royalty was the best way to pay the bills, and here you are, sitting on a hard bench in a long hallway, waiting for the final step to landing, what you assume, will be a pretty cozy gig.
All you have to do is impress Princess Cadance. Easy, right?
You don’t know how long you’ve been sitting here. Time has lost all meaning; the seconds might as well be as long as hours. But there isn’t a clock in the hallway, so you don’t know how long you’ve been sitting here. An eternity? Two? It had to be two at this point. Maybe you should get up and find a secretary—
The door at the end of the hall opens, and your breath hitches in your throat. A tall, pink mare steps out, one hand on the crystal doorframe, the other on her hip. You’ve never seen Princess Cadance in person before, but now you have, and your eyes don’t know what to take in first. Her long, narrow horn, almost like a pink needle on her head. Her small, sharp muzzle, lovingly crafted to bear a cheery smile. Her outfit is a pale blue dress, nothing too formal, but still conscientious enough to remind ponies that she was royalty. But your eyes stop halfway down her chest, at the way it bulges outward, at that perfect curvature under the cloth. She’d left the top two buttons undone; you can see a canyon of pink cleavage, perfectly smooth and seemingly unending. Everypony had said the Princess of Love was beautiful, as befitting her title. You start to mumble out that she didn’t, awestruck by her beauty as you are, but your throat catches and you roughly cough into your shoulder, as if your subconscious self is reminding you whom you’re talking to. When you give her an answer, it’s much more confident, and you even remember to add a ‘your Highness’ to the end of it.
She giggles and shakes her head. “That won’t be necessary for now,” she says, gesturing toward the room at the end of the hall. “That will just slow things down. Call my Cadance, but if you insist, ‘Princess’ is fine.”
The gesture is clear, and you walk for the room, Cadance close behind. Inside, there’s a desk and two chairs. Cadance directs you to the one closest to the door; she takes the other. “So, you’re the lucky pony who’s made it all this way?” she says, the warmth in her voice making you feel at ease. She pulls out a folder and begins to leaf through the pages as you respond, saying you never expected to make it this far. She giggles at that, and her eyes scan down one page in particular.
“So, you don’t have any close family?” she asks you. Something about that makes you frown, though you chase it away when you realize what your eyebrows are doing. It’s a strange first question for an interview, but you answer it truthfully anyway. There’s really nopony in your family that you talk to that often, apart from an aunt and a pair of uncles a few times a year. Cadance expresses her sympathies, but soon moves onto other questions about your personal life. Are you seeing anypony right now? That one seems natural as the Princess of Love at least, so you admit that no, you’re not seeing anypony at the moment. She asks about your friends, and you mention you have a few nearby, but most moved south to Canterlot to find better jobs. She nods and writes something down on the page in the folder and puts it aside.
She grins at you, smile full of excitement. “Well, I think this has gone excellently so far. But before we go on, I have to ask you something: how much do you want this job?”
You cringe inwardly at that. You need this job. Your savings aren’t going to last much longer, and while you could try and make ends meet on minimum wage, you’d really prefer not to. Landing a job at the Crystal Palace would solve all your problems with how much they supposedly paid. You tell Cadance that you absolutely want the job, whatever it entails, and you’ll do whatever it takes to get it.
She beams at hearing that, seeming almost relieved. “Oh, fantastic!” she says, and her happy voice makes you smile. “In that case, we just need to take care of one last thing, and you’re hired!”
You nod along, wondering what it could be, and then her hands move to the buttons on her dress. Your smile freezes onto your face as she begins to undo them, one by one, and her fingers dig under the parting in her dress and pull it to the sides.
