The Wrath of Chaos
Part I: It’s Starting
Mayhem woke up with a yawn and stretched. Last night had been
some party, Pinkie Pie outdid herself. Last night was New Years Eve
and they had all been up all night. It looked like her was the first
one up. The house was a wreak and everybody had just decided to crash
in random places on the floor. He looked around and smiled and went to
the bathroom. The house was dark. He remembered he shut all the blinds
to keep the light out so they could all sleep. He walked into the
guest bathroom and shut the door. He turned on the light and looked in
the mirror. He splashed some water in his eyes and then looked at
them. They had more red tinge to them then last week. “It’s getting
worse with each passing week,” he said to himself quietly. It had been
a month since his last outburst, and each week after that he felt his
alternate personality taking over. He had not told his older sister,
Princess Celestia, yet. In fact he was keeping it secret from
everyone. He really didn’t want to scare anybody else, a lot of
Ponyville was already afraid of him.
Mayhem started making breakfast and one by one all his friends
came into the kitchen. He used magic to expand the kitchen and the
table to fit everyone. Rainbow Dash came into the kitchen with
Scootaloo half asleep on her back and gave him a kiss. He sent food to
the table as he cooked. Everybody was a mess. They all had bloodshot
eyes and messy manes. Pinkie had put something in the punch she called
her special energy booster. That turned out to be liquid caffeine.
They were all bouncing off the walls until they all finally crashed.
“Okay next year Pinkie Pie is not allowed to handle the punch,” said
Twilight. Mayhem was the worst. He had turned the legal drinking age
that day and cracked open the Applejack Daniel’s and hard cider. He
had a massive hangover and that combined with the punch meant he
didn’t remember the night at all. Yet despite this he was still
cooking for all of them. Everyone was pretty quiet, talking slightly
amongst themselves. Even Pinkie was quiet, this was a first for her.
“Oh, what happened last night?” asked Twilight. She was clutching her
head, and she looked sick. Mayhem looked over at here and made a
second cup of the drink he was mixing. “You know Twi you don’t really
look that good,” said Applejack. Mayhem brought the cup over to her.
“What is this?” she asked. “Just drink it, you’ll feel better. An
don’t ask what’s in it because if I tell you then you won’t drink it,”
said Mayhem. Twilight looked at him and took a sip of it and then
looked like she was going to throw up. “Drink it, if you spit any of
it out it won’t work,” said Mayhem. She got tears in her eyes and
swallowed. “Awe what was that?” she asked. Mayhem but down his own cup
of the substance and looked at her. “Drink it and I’ll tell you,” said
Mayhem. Everyone was looking back and forth between Mayhem and
Twilight. She frowned at him and kept drinking until it was gone.
“Okay I’m done and I don’t feel better,” she complained, “now tell me
what is wrong with me?” “Give it time it has to settle in your
stomach. An you have a hangover,” said Mayhem. Now everybody was
looking at him. “What? She does. I have one to that’s why I’m drinking
the same stuff. You must have accidently drank some of my spiked cider
Twilight,” said Mayhem. Everyone was quiet and then Pinkie Pie burst
into laughter. Everyone else follow. Twilight even started laughing.
“Wow, I do feel better, what was that?” she asked. “A special
concoction your brother, some of our friends, and I created when we
were teenagers. It took a year to perfect but it clears a hangover
from the body. This is how we would prevent Celestia from finding out
we were fighting hangovers after we spent nights drinking. Guess the
secrets out now,” he told them. They all looked at him and then
laughed.
After breakfast everyone made their way back to their own
houses. Rainbow Dash decided to stay and help clean up, as did
Fluttershy. Midnight and Scootaloo had fallen back asleep and Annabell
put them both to bed up in Midnight’s room and then came and helped
with the cleaning. “Some party last night,” said Annabell. They all
agreed. “Well a new year then. Anybody have a new year’s resolution?”
asked Fluttershy. They all thought about it. “Spend more time cuddling
you to death,” said Annabell. Fluttershy blushed and giggled. “Not
really into that thing,” said Rainbow Dash. They looked at Mayhem. Oh
he had one alright; figure out what was wrong with him. He had been
doing a lot of research and had found no traces of ponies donning an
alternate personality due to the body alteration spell. For years he
had thought this was what had caused his problem, but now he was
starting to think it may be something else. “Umm, well I suppose
either get Vinyl to list to classical or get Octavia to listen to
techno,” laughed Mayhem. This wasn’t his resolution, but he didn’t
want to tell them the other thing. What he told them would be
impossible anyway.
After they cleaned up Annabell and Fluttershy went off to
Fluttershy’s cottage. Scootaloo was still asleep so Rainbow Dash
stayed with Mayhem in the house. They cuddled up on the couch
together. “I wish we could have more of this kind of time. Neither of
us working, just sitting and cuddling. Not having to worry about what
crazy thing our sister’s are doing and what not,” said Rainbow Dash.
Mayhem smiled and kissed her. “I wish for the same thing,” said
Mayhem. She smiled at him and then moved closer to his body. She must
have been tired because she was asleep in a few minutes. Mayhem sat
there, looking around. He kept hearing whispers, but there were coming
from nowhere. He was starting to wonder if he was going mad, and then
he heard a loud and prominent growl, almost animalistic. He looked
around, nothing was there. He focused some magic on his eyes and went
through his different kind of sights. Nothing at all, nobody was
hidden; nothing was standing behind a corner. Now he really though he
was going mad. He moved slightly and Rainbow Dash moved around. He
shook his head; it was probably the lack of sleep. He closed his eyes
and tried to catch some sleep.
When Rainbow Dash woke up she decided to take Scootaloo back
home. The little girls where still asleep so she picked Scootaloo up
and placed her on her back. “I’ll see you later baby,” said Rainbow
Dash. Mayhem let them out and then looked around and thought about
what he was going to do. He needed to figure this out, and he knew one
pony that could help him out. He had ideas, but he needed to do
research. Midnight was still asleep when he went upstairs and checked
on her. He left a note on the door and then the same note near the
front door for Annabell when she decided to come home. He shut the
door and then locked it with a spell. Annabell would know what to do
when she realized her key wouldn’t work. Mayhem then took a deep
breath and walked into the center of town towards the library.
Twilight was awake when he got there. “Hey Mayhem, do you need
something?” she asked him. She let him in. “Yeah I need you to help me
do research on something,” he told her. She looked at him puzzled.
“Okay, well we can do that,” she said. “But I want to do it in secret,
just the two of us,” he told her quietly. “Spike isn’t here, he is
helping Rarity with something,” said Twilight. “Okay, shut the door
and the blinds,” said Mayhem. She looked at him weird again and did
it. “We can’t answer the door; I don’t want anybody but you to know
this. Do not tell our friends; do not tell any of my sisters, not even
Celestia,” said Mayhem. “Mayhem what is this all about? You are
scaring me,” she told him. Mayhem looked around. “I don’t think I have
an alternate personality, I think it may be something else,” said
Mayhem.
They spent hours poring through books about magic and spells.
Luckily nobody bothered them all. “This is everything I have hear
Mayhem, and there is no record of anybody creating an alternate
personality or having one created as a side effect from using the body
alteration spell,” said Twilight. They had made a large mess so they
decided to start putting everything away. The two of them using magic
made quick work of it. “We need to do more research; I need to figure
out what this is Twilight. I think tomorrow we need to venture to the
Canterlot libraries,” said Mayhem. Twilight looked at him. “You don’t
have what I’m looking for here, but the Canterlot library should,”
said Mayhem. Twilight was starting to wonder if Mayhem was losing his
mind. “Okay we can do that I guess. When should I meet you at the
train station?” asked Twilight. “Just meet me at my house tomorrow at
eight,” said Mayhem.
Twilight was right on time, just like he thought she would be.
Mayhem left a note for Annabell on where he was. “Morning,” he said.
She yawned. “Morning, so how are we getting there?” she asked
Twilight. “I think you’ll enjoy it. Just stand here next to me,” said
Mayhem. Twilight stepped closer to Mayhem and then a ring of fire
formed around them and began to spiral upwards into a reverse tornado.
There was a burst of fire and then they were at the Canterlot library.
“How…how did…did we just teleport?” asked Twilight. Mayhem nodded his
head. “What you just witnessed is the world’s most powerful
teleportation spell. I’m the only person to date who can use it since
its creator. I’ll I have to do is picture where I want to go and I can
be there in a snap,” said Mayhem. Twilight was amazed, stupefied
almost.
They walked to the front door of the Royal library. The guards
saluted and bowed to both of them and then let them in. Mayhem told
them not to alter Celestia that they were here. They ventured into the
older parts of the library. “Mayhem, your leading us to the section
about spirits and demons,” said Twilight. “Yes, this is the first
place I want to start, but I don’t believe this is going to give me
the answer,” said Mayhem. He was right, after poring through the books
for three hours they found nothing. “Exactly as I thought,” said
Mayhem. Twilight put her book down. “You honestly thought you were
possessed?” asked Twilight. “Oh no I’m pretty sure I’m possessed, but
not by a spirit,” said Mayhem. Twilight looked at him funny. “What
else could be possessing you?” asked Twilight. “I don’t know,” said
Mayhem. Twilight looked at him and then noticed his eyes flashed
bright red and then back to their normal purple. “Your eyes just
changed color, they turned red,” said Twilight. Mayhem looked at her.
“I think it’s time we head back to Ponyville,” said Mayhem.
Mayhem said that they didn’t need to get together at all
anymore, he had an idea. He did ask her to research something for him
and let him know what she found in her spare time. Whatever was
controlling him was getting stronger. He still didn’t know what it was
but he could feel it. His eyes were redder every day, and he found
that he got angry real easy, not at his friends, but at things that
were pointless at getting angry at. Nobody except Twilight knew what
was going on and she had kept her promise and not told anybody. He
could hide it forever though and eventually Rainbow Dash noticed
something was up. When they were having their weekly lunch date she
brought it up. “Are you okay, you’ve been very off lately? Also your
eyes look like they’re turning red,” said Rainbow Dash. “I don’t know
what you’re talking about,” said Mayhem. “Well Vinyl says you stopped
dealing with customers because you keep getting agitated,” said
Rainbow Dash. “Dashie I’m fine,” he told her. He knew that he wasn’t,
and he was trying real hard not to snap at her. “I also noticed you’ve
been spending a lot of time with Twilight,” said Rainbow Dash. “Oh
we’re just working on a project together. She’s been needing help with
certain spells and I’ve been giving her a hand,” said Mayhem. He
smiled at her, and hoped she was buying it. “Well okay then,” said
Rainbow Dash. They finished lunch and then she went back to work.
Mayhem was just finishing up when Twilight ran up to him. “I found
something,” said Twilight.
“This is fantastic Twilight,” said Mayhem. She had found the
answer, or perhaps maybe a solution to the answer. Twilight found a
scroll that told the story of the Order of the Hidden Shadow. “Maybe
they could help out,” said Twilight. Mayhem shook his head. “That
order existed thousands of years ago and was destroyed around the time
of the founding of Equestria,” said Mayhem. Twilight looked at Mayhem
funny; he seemed to know a lot about the order. “It’s said that they
may still exist,” said Twilight. “I don’t think so Twi, they were
irradiated by my parents,” said Mayhem. Mayhem didn’t want to tell
Twilight anything. “Okay well I see the note of that so you’re
probably right,” said Twilight.
Part II: Chaos Rises
For the next few weeks Twilight kept sending information about
the Order to Mayhem. He read all of it but he felt most of it would
not help him solve his problem. In fact he had already concocted a
plan, and not a day to soon. His eyes were almost completely red; his
excuse he told everyone was he was preparing for a concert. Twilight
was the only one that knew what was going on, but even she didn’t know
everything.
One morning Mayhem woke up early to go into the store and work
on something. When he went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror
he swore he saw something else besides himself looking at him in the
mirror. He closed his eyes and shook his head. When he opened them
back up he was looking at himself again. He didn’t think twice about
it and made his was from the house to the store. Ponyville was dead
quiet. He made his way to the store and opened the door with magic.
Vinyl and Octavia would be in till later. He had taken shipment of
some very expensive electric guitars and wanted to make sure that the
display for them was properly sealed and protected with magic. He also
had a large order of instruments he needed to wrap up for a music
school in Canterlot. It was busy work and he didn’t really mind that
much. He got the display case taken care of quickly with no problems.
It was when he was wrapping up instruments that he heard a low and
evil laughter. He looked around and used his different forms of
vision, nothing but himself was in the store. He went back to work and
then heard the laughter again. “Hello is someone in here?” he yelled
through the store. No answer. He went back to work and the laughter
did not happen again. Now he was starting to get worried.
In the store was the only time Mayhem had heard the laugh.
However other strange things began to happen. He constantly kept
waking up in the back yard of the house or somewhere around the town.
At first he thought he was sleep walking but after a while he began to
believe it was something else. He also had a hard time sleeping on
other days; sometimes he wouldn’t get any at all. Things were starting
to get weird. He wanted to tell Celestia, but he really just wanted to
figure this out for himself.
The figuring things out for himself part wasn’t working; he
couldn’t come up with a solution. He kept racking his brain to come up
with the correct answer for what was going on. Finally he could take
it anymore; he needed to talk to someone. But not Celestia, he decided
instead to talk to Luna. He went to Canterlot as soon as he could get
away from work. When he got to the castle Luna’s guards led him to her
room. “I think she may be asleep though Prince Mayhem, but if it is
urgent then I don’t think the Princess will mind,” said her head
guard. They left him at the end of the hallway and he walked down to
the door. He was about to knock on it when it opened on its own. He
entered the room and found Luna lying in her bed. “I felt you coming
brother,” said Luna. He shut the door. “Sorry I hope I didn’t wake
you,” he told her. She smiled at him. “I had gotten up to go to the
bathroom when I felt you enter Canterlot. Your aura has become
increasingly stronger since last month. Is this what you came to talk
to me about?” asked Luna. Mayhem shook his head and Luna turned the
lights on to get a better look at him. “Oh my god Mayhem, what is
wrong with you?” asked Luna. Mayhem didn’t know what she was talking
about and then he looked into the mirror. His eyes and turned into the
red dragon ones that haunted him at night. Luna jumped out of bed.
“What is happening?” asked Luna. Mayhem took a deep breath and sighed.
“I didn’t want to talk to Celestia about this, you’d probably know
better. Luna, how did you know when you started to become twisted into
Nightmare Moon?” asked Mayhem. Luna got a shocked look on her face and
then a confused on. “Well I don’t really remember because it was so
long ago. I could kind of feel the personality coming out. It all
started when I started to get angry at the ponies of Equestria and
Tia. I had lots of sudden burst of anger and then eventually I became
completely engulfed in my anger,” said Luna. Mayhem looked at her; she
didn’t realize she was explaining exactly what was happening to him.
“Did you ever notice any change in your appearance?” asked Mayhem.
“Well now that you mention it Tia said as I got worse I started to
look more and more like Nightmare Moon,” said Luna. Luna was starting
to get scared. Mayhem began to paced, thinking to himself. “Mayhem
you’re scaring me, what’s wrong. Do I need to get Tia?” asked Luna.
“No, no don’t get Tia I’m fine,” he said. He didn’t realize he was
yelling out loud. He looked at Luna and then in the mirror, and a
light bulb clicked inside his head. “Yes that might be it. Thanks for
your help Luna,” said Mayhem. He ran for the window and jumped out of
it and flew back to Ponyville, he had something that he need to look
at.
Mayhem locked himself in his room and shut all the blinds. He
began pouring over the notes and scrolls that Twilight had sent him.
They all made sense now, everything that he was reading. He made one
stop at the library to get a book from Twilight and then locked
himself back in his room. It contained exactly what he was looking
for. He now knew everything; everything made complete sense to him.
Unfortunately he believed it was too late, he had to get back to
Canterlot and warn Celestia. He rushed out of his room and found
Annabell sitting down in the living room with Rainbow Dash. “You
missed our lunch date,” said Rainbow Dash. She didn’t sound mad, just
confused. They both looked at him; he must have looked a mess. “May,
are you okay?” asked Annabell. “Yeah, I’m okay I just gotta get to
Canterlot right now,” said Mayhem. He rushed for the door but they cut
him off. “Mayhem you’ve been acting weird for weeks now,” said
Annabell. “You’ve also been spending all your time alone or with
Twilight,” said Rainbow Dash. Mayhem was starting to get annoyed, but
for his sake he kept his cool. “I’m okay, I need to get to Canterlot
but I’ll be back soon,” he said. He ran out the door and then
teleported straight to Canterlot, he just hoped he wasn’t too late.
When Mayhem got to Canterlot the guards told him Celestia and
Luna were conversing in the throne room. He ran for it, and the pain
in his head became worse with each step. He didn’t even wait for the
guards to open the door and burst right through it. Celestia and Luna
where looking at him. “Mayhem, Luna was just,” said Celestia. But
Mayhem cut her off. “Tia we don’t have time. I’ve got about a minute
left maybe before I lose control. You need to evacuate all of
Canterlot to Ponyville immediately. When you get there go to Twilight.
Make sure Shining Armor is with you. You, Luna, Shining Armor, and
Twilight need to work together and cast the Barrier Ultimata around
Ponyville. The radius needs to be ten miles, which means it should
even Sweet Apple Acers. Afterwards you need to talk with Twilight; she
knows everything and has been working with me on a plan. Now go
quickly I’ve almost lost it,” said Mayhem. Celestia and Luna looked at
him. “Mayhem,” said Celestia. “Tia I love you, and now I’m telling you
to GO NOW!!!” shouted Mayhem. The listened to him and ran for the
door. Mayhem shut it and locked it with magic. The pain split right
down his head and he yelled in agony. His body began to change. He
became taller, even taller than Celestia. His mane and tail burst into
ever-burning flame. Finally his wings transformed into dragon wings.
The creature that stood in the middle of the room looked into the
glass. This form had great beauty, more so then Nightmare Moon ever
had. “This is going to work out well,” said the creature in a low and
evil voice. The creature’s horn glowed and all the glass in the
windows burst. The wind outside began to blow, the sky turned from
blue to deep red. Lightning began to flash. After over three thousand
years of moving from body to body and gaining power, Chaos had finally
re-risen.
The Barrier Ultimata had been cast over Ponyville. It took a
lot of effort but it was done. All of Canterlot had been evacuated
thanks to Mayhem using magic to create more trains and tracks to
Ponyville. Celestia cut her flow of magic and turned to her Faithful
Student. “Mayhem said you knew what had been going on this entire
time?” asked Celestia. “Yes Princess, and at his request he told me
not to tell anybody,” said Twilight. “Twili I think maybe you should
have told someone about this,” said Shining Armor. “No, no I respect
her promise to Mayhem. Now he said you and him had worked on a plan,”
said Celestia. “Yes, we need to gather up my friends and meet in the
library,” said Twilight.
They all crammed into the main floor of the library and
Twilight addressed them all. “Mayhem sent me a plan just before he
left. He said he found evidence finally that many years ago the Order
of the Hidden Shadow put a Taboo on the body alteration spell. This is
what caused the personality change. He said that the magic of the
Royal family, meaning Princess Celestia, Luna, Cadence, and Annabell,
plus my brother would be able to destroy the creature he would become
without harming his own mind,” said Twilight. “Well that sounds good,
but what about the Elements of Harmony?” asked Rainbow Dash. Twilight
looked at them all. “He said do not use them unless the creature is to
powerful. He stated it would not do great damage but that he could be
harmed if they were used,” said Twilight. They all looked around at
each other. “We will do as he requests,” said Celestia, “But I brought
the elements just in case.” Two guards brought the box in and Twilight
and he friends took the elements. “When do we strike?” asked
Applejack. “Mayhem said as soon as possible. With each growing second
he said he will become more powerful,” said Twilight. “Then we must
make haste,” said Celestia.
They took one of the trains back up to Canterlot. Using magic
they sped it up to four times its speed. When they arrived in the city
they found it deserted. They walked through the streets, no sound what
so ever. There was a small yelp, but it just came from Fluttershy.
Then out of nowhere two entities of pure fire appeared. Luna and
Celestia jumped in front of them and destroyed them with a blast of
magic. “Not really a means of slowing us down,” said Luna. They
continued to the castle without and hindrance. They cautiously made
their way to the throne room. When they got to the doors they burst
open by magic. “I felt you coming from a mile away,” said Chaos. He
was sitting on Celestia’s throne, looking at a map of Equestria. They
walked into the room and the Royal family and Shining Armor stepped
forward. Chaos looked up from his map and snickered at them. “So this
is what Equestria has to offer as salvation. A corrupt family of
alicorns and some pathetic ponies from a dinky little town,” said
Chaos. Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash had to grab Rarity. “Dinky,
pathetic, how dare you,” she yelled. Chaos laughed and got up from the
throne. He was much taller than they thought. “Come at me then,” said
Chaos. A combined blast of magic was shot at Chaos. He offered back a
blast that overpowered the other blast easily. Chaos laughed. “Your
feeble attempts are amusing. This vessel is more powerful then all of
you put together just on its own,” said Chaos. They had no idea what
the creature was talking about. Chaos walked towards them while
deflecting magic blasts. When he got close he used magic to push
everyone but Celestia out of the way. He then picked her up with magic
and looked into her eyes. They had an almost whimpering looking to
them. “To think you thought yourself so powerful,” said Chaos. He
threw Celestia at the wall with blinding speed. She crashed into the
wall and rubble fell onto her. She picked herself up but then fell
back down; the pain was too much so she tried to numb it with magic.
“Really I was hoping for a better display,” said Chaos. He closed his
eyes and laughed and Luna and Annabell got him with a surprise blast.
He flew across the room and crashed into the throne. He got back up
and chuckled. “That’s more like it,” laughed Chaos. Celestia had
managed to get back up. “This isn’t working,” she said. Chaos walked
towards them slowly, and then stopped. He closed his eyes, Mayhem was
coming back up. They all watch the creature rive around. When it
opened its eyes back up they were purple. “I don’t have much time,”
said Mayhem, “You need to use the Elements of Harmony to end this.”
Twilight stepped forward. “Why did you ask me to tell everyone not use
them unless necessary?” asked Twilight. Mayhem closed his eyes.
“Because of what will happen. The elements will work, but at a grave
consequence. They will separate the evil from me, but it will also
destroy me at the same time,” said Mayhem. “NO!!!” Both Rainbow Dash
and Celestia had yelled no. “It is what it has to be,” said Mayhem.
Rainbow Dash ran forward. “We can figure out another way,” said
Rainbow Dash with tears in her eyes. “There is no other way. I’ve
separated enough of my mind to have time to say my goodbyes,” said
Mayhem. He turned to Twilight and the rest of the girls. “You all are
amazing ponies. I’m glad I am able to call all of you my friends,”
said Mayhem. He then turned to Cadence and Shining armor. “Cadence, we
grew up together and had lots of fun times. I wish I could have been
there for some other fun times but what we had I will cherish.
Shinning Armor, you have been my best friend since we were colts.
Sometimes the President and his Right Hand Man aren’t always together
in person, but they are in spirit,” said Mayhem. He turned to
Annabell. “I’ve always known from the day you were born you would
create greatness for yourself, and I was right. Please be sure to
explain to Midnight why I am gone and make sure she understands,” said
Mayhem. Annabell nodded with tears in her eyes. Mayhem turned to Luna.
“Luna, you were always there for me when I needed someone to talk to.
Even though you weren’t there for awhile when I was first getting
started in life I still knew that I could talk to you in spirit,” said
Mayhem. Luna was almost to the point of balling. He turned to
Celestia. “Tia, I know sometimes we didn’t get along and our
relationship was strained for many years. Know, however, that I never
stopped loving my big sister,” said Mayhem. Celestia nodded, her eyes
sparkling with tears. Finally Mayhem turned to Rainbow Dash. “Dashie,
I love you with all my heart. It is cruel that we only got to spend a
small amount of time with each other. I had hoped that it would have
been for the rest of our lives. Just remember that no matter what I
will always be with you and that I will always love you. I’m glad that
I asked to go to lunch with me that first day,” said Mayhem. He walked
forwards and kissed her, just briefly, but it was the best kiss he had
ever given her. He then stepped back into the center of the room. “Now
do it quick before I lose control,” said Mayhem. The girls all lined
up and then the power of the elements came to life. “I love you,” said
Rainbow Dash. “I love you to Dashie,” said Mayhem. A great burst of
energy was shot straight at Mayhem. Just before it hit he closed his
eyes. When they reopened Chaos had resurfaced, and the first and last
thing he saw was the blast from the elements. “No!!!” he yelled. The
piercing shriek filled the entire room. His body was lifted up into
the air and then rammed into the ceiling. The ceiling then crack and
Chaos, along with tons of rubble, fell to the ground. It was done.
When the dust cleared everyone walked slowly to the massive pile of
rubble. Everyone had tears in their eyes. They all worked together and
within half an hour they had cleared the rubble. Lying in the middle
of all of it was the body of a black alicorn with a purple mane. They
all moved slowly towards it. When they got to it they found the body
cold. There was no movement from the body, no sign of breathing. Even
though there had been a few tons of rubble piled on top of it the body
was quite peaceful looking. Mayhem was dead; he had sacrificed his own
life to save Equestria. Rainbow Dash fell down next to the body and
began to cry over it. Princess Celestia sat on the grown next to
Rainbow Dash and put her hoof around her. She cried as she stroked
Mayhem’s main. They had all thought Mayhem would appear at some point,
thinking that an escape route would have been in his plan and that
this body was a dummy of some sort. But the body was his and only his,
and he was never coming back to them.
Part III: A Shock at the Funeral
The funeral for Mayhem had been planned for a week after his
death. Everyone was in mourning. Celestia had the guards in Ponyville
bring Midnight, as well as Scootaloo, Applebloom, and Sweetie Belle,
to Canterlot. When Midnight found out Mayhem was dead she spent she
spent a whole day crying in her room. Celestia, Luna, Cadence, and
Annabell took turns comforting her. Shining Armor was taking it hard
to; he had lost his best friend, a friend he had had for seventeen
years. The weather everyday was grey and dismal, and it rained every
other day. Mayhem’s body was being kept in the library in an open
casket. Rainbow Dash slept in the library every night, and Celestia
made sure that the guards looking over the body took care of her. She
got to the point where she refused to leave the casket, and the cooks
brought her all her meals, but she was barely eating at all.
The day of the funeral the weather could not have been more
perfect. Not a cloud in the sky, the sun shining bright. Princess
Celestia had put in a request with Cloudsdale for this weather. All of
Canterlot and Ponyville were in attendance, and yet the magnificent
gardens were more than big enough for everyone there. Those had
witness the death had been given seats in the front row. Celestia
started off the ceremony with thanking everyone for coming. That was
followed by a tribute song from Mayhem’s band lead by a duet sung by
Vinyl and Octavia. After the song certain people gave speeches.
Shining Armor was the first to the podium. “Most of the older
generation of Canterlot can remember me and Mayhem as colts, back when
we first became the President and his Right Hand Man. I’m sure many
could remember some of the chaos we caused around Canterlot. Mayhem
was like a brother to me, and I’m glad we were best friends for the
time we had together,” said Shining Armor. Annabell was next after
Shining Armor. “My brother was always there for me, whenever I needed
him. I loved him so much and I know he will always be with me. One of
my favorite saying makes me know this is true. Death leaves a
heartache that no one can heal. Love leaves a memory that no one can
steal.” Annabell teared up after she said this and Cadence took over.
“It’s always been strange to have an uncle that was the same age as
you. It’s even weirder when you got to grow up with that uncle as
kids, teenagers, and adults. Mayhem never liked it when I called him
uncle but he always thought it was funny. Mayhem was an uncle and a
best friend and I will miss him every day for the rest of my life,”
said Cadence. Rainbow Dash followed. “I only knew Mayhem for a short
period of time, but he was the most amazing pony I have ever met. He
was a gentleman, he was a friend, and he was a love at first sight. We
had always hoped to be together forever. I know he is gone but he will
still always be with me,” said Rainbow Dash. Celestia was the last one
to speak. “My brother and I were not always on the best of terms
sometimes. I was the only sister he ever argued with. I made the worst
mistake of banishing him when he needed my help. Every day I wish I
never made that choice. I loved him so much and now he is gone from
me. I know I shouldn’t blame myself but.” But Celestia stopped
speaking and looked up at the sky; in fact many ponies in audience
were looking. The sky had turned grey with clouds, and right above
them the clouds were starting to swirl around. Then a single bolt of
lightning crashed to the ground, right in the middle of the aisle that
separated the crowds. A pony appeared before them. It was wearing
shining black armor and was cover in a cloak and hood. The sky turned
back to normal and the pony that appeared before them took its hood
off. The whole crowd gasped, all in disbelief. Mayhem was standing
before them. He didn’t say a word; he just walked forward towards the
casket. Then there was a shriek and Rainbow Dash ran at him crying. He
put a hoof out and stopped her. “Not now, I have something I must take
care of first.” He walked past her to where the casket was. Celestia
got a good look at the armor he was wearing and gasped. “But…that…it
can’t mean…is that what I think it is?” stuttered Celestia. There was
another burst of talking. “You neglected to tell me this Mayhem,”
yelled Twilight. Mayhem raised his hoof to silence everyone. “Some
things are best kept secret until the time is necessary, as it is
written in the code of the Order of the Hidden Shadow,” said Mayhem.
More gasps throughout the audience. “Wait, but if you’re here, then
who is in the casket?” asked Shining Armor. Not a second after he said
that the casket burst open. Mayhem pushed Celestia towards the crowd
and then put up a barrier so powerful it protected the entire crowd
from the blast. “Very good Mayhem, very good,” said the dark an evil
voice of Chaos. The creature that they all had associated with as
Mayhem’s alter ego appeared out of the casket. “We could have used a
pony such as you in the war between the order and the league,” said
Chaos. “But I thought the order was evil?” asked Twilight. Chaos
laughed. “Of course not, the order placed that information in the
libraries across Equestria to hide what you all should have feared all
along. The League of Chaos,” shouted Chaos so the entire crowd could
hear. Chaos laughed. “I still don’t get it,” said Luna, “Who is this
creature?” Chaos turned at looked at Luna. “Oh Luna, you don’t
remember me, maybe this will remind you.” Chaos cleared his throat and
then spoke in the voice of Nightmare Moon. Many in the audience
screamed. Luna looked positively frightened. “Mayhem was the only pony
that ever caught on,” said Chaos. Everyone in the crowd was still
confused. “I’ll explain,” said Mayhem. “The Order of the Hidden Shadow
was never the enemy. The order was all about peace and traveled around
assisting ponies in need, yet never clued them in as to who was
helping them. We are known for being able to transform into shadows
and control people for brief periods of time. But there was one member
that sought to use this power past its limit and control other ponies
as a way to gain immortality. That pony was Chaos and it was he who
formed the league, the orders mortal enemy. A great war waged and
ended with the order demolishing the league and Chaos escaping
capture. The order placed information throughout Equestria to prevent
the world from finding out about the league and Chaos, and they
changed their goal to one thing, finding Chaos and destroying him.
Over the years Chaos controlled many ponies but eventually they would
pass and he would have to move to another body. Then he found Luna.
Her mind was weak and he took control of her and created the persona
Nightmare Moon. But then the elements were used against Nightmare Moon
it separated Chaos from Luna and had gravely weakened him. The
elements couldn’t stop him, but they could be employed to separate him
from his vessel. I found this out while reading some notes Twilight
had sent to me. Of course she couldn’t see what was hidden in them,
only a member of the order can see was is actually written in the
scrolls we placed around Equestria. It was then I finally realized
Chaos was who was controlling me and that the outbursts I had were
signs that he was gaining power, seeing as he feeds on anger. When the
blast from the elements hit us it weakened him. I was able to trap him
in a cocoon in the shape of my body. I knew it wouldn’t hold forever
and waited for my moment to strike. It just happens to be a
coincidence that it was at the funeral.” Chaos laughed. “The masters
teach their members well. But I find it funny that of all the members
that could have found me a mere boy found me,” said Chaos. Mayhem
threw his cloak off. “And the last thing that you are going to know is
that you were destroyed by a boy,” said Mayhem. Chaos growled and
charged at Mayhem. They crossed horns and sparks flew all over the
place. Celestia and Luna moved to help Mayhem, but he stopped them.
“No he is mine, only a member of the order can finish this,” yelled
Mayhem. He blasted Chaos back with a blast of magic and it knocked
Chaos to the ground. For the first time in his life Chaos felt fear,
and he didn’t like it. “Give it up, I’m more powerful then you are,”
said Mayhem. Chaos snarled and then laughed. “You think I’m giving it
my all, now you will witness my full power,” said Chaos. The fire that
was his mane grew larger and he yelled with enough force to knock
people in the crowd over. Mayhem then laughed. “And now let me show
you my true power,” said Mayhem. He closed his eyes and when he opened
them they were glowing purple. He spread his wings out and the ground
began to tremble. A purple aura surrounded his body and the energy
coming off his body was creating a crater in the ground around him.
Chaos charged Mayhem and when he ran into him Mayhem burst and Chaos
was ensnared in a magical trap. Mayhem had used a clone made of magic.
A purple mist floated up from the ground and Mayhem reappeared. Chaos
was in full fledged panic. Mayhem walked towards him, his horn
glowing. “And now I end this,” shouted Mayhem. The ground shook and
they were moved away from the crowd of people. Twelve lines of purple
colored energy descended from the re clouded sky. They formed a large
circle around Chaos and began to circle him, moving closer with each
passing second. “By the power of the Order of the Hidden Shadow, I
fulfill my duty given to me by the head masters of the Order, and
hereby destroy the enemy Chaos into oblivion,” shouted Mayhem.
Everyone in the crowd look at a distance as the twelve beams became
one. “COME TO ME SKYBEAM!!!” shouted Mayhem. A bright flash of light
blinded everyone, and then a giant beam of pure energy descended onto
Chaos. The shadow of his body could be seen as it was ripped to shreds
by the blast. The blast was so powerful it destroyed every pane of
glass from Canterlot to Manehatten. Chaos shrieked at he was ripped
apart by Mayhem’s blast, until he was gone completely.
Everyone in the crowd couldn’t believe what they had just
witnessed. Anybody who thought Celestia was the most powerful pony in
Equestria was now thinking otherwise. The blast had left a huge scar
on the land. The scar was smoldering and throwing smoke into the air
and from the smoke Mayhem appeared. Before he reached the crowd the
day instantly became dark and three ancient ponies appeared before
them. He bowed and they commanded him to stand. “You have done well
Mayhem Darkshadow,” said the first of the ancients. “You have defeated
Chaos and save the world from his wrath,” said the second. “And now we
offer you the ultimate gift, a seat as the newest Master of the Order
of the Hidden Shadow,” said the third. “My masters I am honored to
have this offer, but I wish to decline it,” said Mayhem. All the
ancients looked at each other. “We understand, and you have lost no
respect from us and the rest of the order. We look to you if you are
ever needed,” said all three ancients. They disappeared and the sky
became day again. Celestia, Luna, Annabell, and Midnight were waiting
for him. He walked up to him and they all embraced him. They spoke no
words; all his sisters just cried tears of joy. When they were
finished Celestia smiled at Mayhem and stepped aside. Rainbow Dash was
waiting for him. She was crying and smiling at him. They looked at
each other for a long time and then they embraced. “I told you that I
would never leave you,” said Mayhem. Rainbow Dash nodded and kept
smiling at him. He wiped the tears from her eyes and then they kissed,
not caring that thousands of ponies were watching them.
