Chapter 1
Awakening
It was a warm summer night in Ponyville, even up in the cloud home of Rainbow Dash. Every pony was asleep in their homes; this included Rainbow but, in Camelot, the two royal pony princess’s were both awake. They both looked at each other with astonished looks on their faces.
Luna turned to her sister and asked, "Did you feel that?
Celestia could only nod in agreement, still unsure of what she had felt. The two sisters continued to ponder what felt like a magical flair, similar to what Twilight gave off during her entrance exam at Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns.
Meanwhile, back in the sleepy town of Ponyville, Rainbow awoke with a jump. After finally getting up, she looked around her puffy room, dazed and confused. She felt like something had literally knocked her out of bed, almost felt like magic... but how would she know that she wasn’t a unicorn? So after realizing it was still only midnight, the cyan Pegasus got back into bed and drifted off to sleep once more.
Awaking the next morning, Rainbow got out of bed and stretched, feeling all the bones in her wings crack. Slowly, she then moved on to the kitchen. There, Tank was waiting for her with a hungry look on his face.
Rainbow looked back and said, "Ok, here," as she gave him a bowl of food.
Then she sat down and ate a simple breakfast of oats and a glass of orange juice.
After breakfast, Rainbow had an hour to waste before work. She decided to head into town. On the way she met up with Applejack, who was also on her way to pick up some supplies from town. On the way they chatted about random things happening around town. Upon reaching the middle of town they ended their conversation and went their separate ways.
Rainbow decided to head to Twilight's to ask about last night. With a jolt, she flew away towards the library that Twilight called her home. Usually she would just crash in through the window, but today she actually needed something. After a knock on the door and a short wait, Twilight answered her friend with a smile.
"What’s up, Dash?"
Dash replied, "I got a quick question about magic."
Twilight looked and said, "Oh? How can I help?"
Then a smile returned to her face. Dash turned and asked, "What was your flair like?" Twi looked puzzled.
"My flare?"
Dash said, "Yeah, you know, when you got your cutie mark and all." Waving a hoof a Twi.
Twilight looked at her and said, "Well, it's kind of hard to explain..."
There was a pause, then she said, "It was like a moment of pure confusion..."
Dash looked disappointed, then quickly asked, "Well, what about magic sense?" Twilight thought for a moment and replied, "I don’t understand what you want to know." "Well," Dash trailed off.
"What does it feel like?"
"What does magic sense feel like?" responded Twilight.
"Yea! That’s it." Twilight thought to herself for a moment while Dash hoofed the ground. Twilight finally looked at Dash and said,
"Well, it's like…kind of a tingly feeling in your head, but you can eventually tell the difference between what kind of magic your feeling. Does that help?" Twilight asked.
Dash looked up from hoofing the ground and said,
"I don’t know. Could it ever push you out of bed?"
"Push you out of bed?!" Twi responded.
She giggled, "I don’t think that’s ever happened before."
"Well, can non-unicorns have a magic sense?"
Twi eyed her and responded,
"Yes, I suppose they can. Why?"
"Well, I think I felt magic last night, but I don’t know what to make of it." Rainbow said. Twilight, completely into the conversation, realized they had been standing the whole time. Turning to Rainbow, "Before we continue, would you like a seat?"
Dash happily accepted and sat next to her friend.
"So you felt magic? How so?"
Dash explained that she shot out of bed around midnight, landing on the floor, and after getting up she suddenly felt magic.
"But I don’t know what magic feels like, that’s why I'm here."
Twilight looked at her with a questioning stare.
Dash blurted out, "I know it was magic of a sort, but I don’t know why."
Twilight called to Spike, who came running down the steps. Halfway down, he stopped and asked, "What is it, Twilight?"
Noticing Rainbow, he waved and said, "'morning, Dash."
She returned the wave with a smile. Then turning her attention back to Twilight once more. She was asking Spike to bring a book on types of magic. Spike quickly nodded and ran off to find the right book.
Back in the palace in the capital of Canterlot, all the staff was busy running around grabbing papers and books for the princess sisters, whom were sitting in the library. Celestia was reading some book while Luna, clearly, casted spells in the corner of the room which were illuminated but a faint blue aura.
Having finished her spell, Luna moved over to Celestia and said, "Sister, I can’t trace it." The white Alicorn looked at her and said, "Very well, at least you tried."
Her sister looked at her with a fake smile, then went off to study other books that were pilling up all around. After long hours of research, the Sun Princess still had no idea what it was she was looking for. She levitated over a quill and parchment. She began to write to my faithful student. It read;
Twilight Sparkle,
We have a situation here. I'm not sure if you are aware of it, but last night there was some kind of magic flair or similar event. I need your help in Canterlot to research this phenomenon, please write back soon.
Celestia
Then in a flash of gold magic, followed by green and grey smoke, the letter vanished, already on its way to Twilight.

Chapter 2
Realization
In the warm library of Ponyville the two mares’ sat continuing their conversation. As the clock on the wall chimed alerting the ponies to the hour they both stopped there conversing realizing that they had been there for almost an hour! Dash realized she had to get to work and with a quick jump from her seat. She turned to the purple mare in front of her. “Twi I’m so sorry I got to go I almost forgot about work” waiting for an answer se looked at her friend.
Twilight returned the stare with a smile “but of course we all got things to do today” responded the unicorn “but before you go you sure you’re ok after last night?” she asked with a concerned stare aimed towards her friend.
“But of course Twi just something odd is all it was, I mean we’ve see worse” the cyan mare giggled and with a WOOSH she bolted out the door with a rainbow trail following her out then turning towards the weather office. Along the way many ponies had to dodge Dash as she flew off toward the weather office.
After Dash had left Twilight went back to her normal routine. Spike was back in bed “man could that dragon sleep” she thought to herself. After freshening up she was ready to start her day. And what a day she had planned “so many books to read oh joy” with a smile on her face she began upstairs but was stopped by a swirling green could of smoke that quickly turned to a letter. Adorning the letter was none other than the royal seal! “WOW this must be important!” Twilight thought quickly grasping the letter in her magical grip. Usually letters from the princess had her personal seal on them. With a slight snap she opened the letter.
Twilight Sparkle,

“Now this is very odd the princess usually does not write so unemotionally.” Twilight thought to herself. She read the letter at least 6 more times before putting it down on the wood table. Her thoughts started jumping around about possible reasons for this mentioned flare “such a rare event is truly a cause for alarm….” her thought trailed off. After a pause her thought snapped to Rainbow Dash. ”What if… this has something to do with Dash” after thinking on it a bit longer “But she’s a Pegasus this is a magic event” quickly pushing the idea aside she continued to ponder other options.

At the weather office everything was calm and normal or as normal a place that scheduled the weather could be. There where papers all over along with star charts graphs and charts all for predicting how the weather should be. Among these ponies sat on their haunches deeply engrossed in their work. All that changed as the manager swooped in with a THUD Dash landed in the doorway looking around she said “well what’s going on today I need to get up there!” indifferent the ponies around her simply looked then went back to work, they were all familiar with Dash’s attitude . Thunderlane who has recently been promoted to co-manager approaches Rainbow “Hey boss” he says with a smile on his face. Dash looks at him returning the smile.
“Nice day?” Dash asks while maintaining the smile she walks toward him then glancing a pile of papers that is now next to her.
“Well it will be all day” Thunderlane replied happily. “I have already got the sky’s cleared and rounded up any and all stray clouds.” With his cheerful mood he glanced at some papers on the nearby desk then returning his gaze back to Dash he stated “And the forecast says clear skies all day today” when he finished he was obviously hoping for some praise from his superior but knowing Dash he was not getting any.
Dash said “Very good Thunder I’m impressed.” Thunders ears perked up at the unexpected praise. “Yea I am late buy 15 min and you’re trying to one up me eh?” Dash added Thunders ears lowered as he saw the return of the usual Dash arrogant and always trying to be the best. “But... Good job anything else to do?” Dash said looking around .
Thunder double checked the forecast and turning to Dash said “No that’s looks like it for today.” Looking around at everypony in the room then turning back to Dash “I guess you can take the rest of the day off I mean I got things here if you don’t think I’ll one up you” Thunder laughed and nudged Dash with his foreleg.
At this the cyan mare laughed a bit and calmly said “WEEELLLL I guess you can handle things for one day” and with a small wink she turned to the door stopping only a few feet away. Turning back to thunder “You’ll still never be as good as me you know” laughing she flew off leaving the dark colored colt to his business.

“WOW what a day” Dash thought to herself. “No work, it’s still early what luck!” almost giddy with possibilities she decides to head to shugercube corner for an early mid morning snack. Landing softly in the street in front of the gingerbread looking structure, Dash is immediately assaulted by the smells of numerous sweets. However before Dash could walk towards the wonderfully smelling establishment, a faint buzzing hit her ears. And in a snap she jolted to the side with a speed only she could muster as a speeding scooter whizzed past FWWWOOOSSSHH her rainbow mane blowing in the wind. There was a skidding as the scooter came to a quick stop nearly knocking all if its passengers free of their seats. After their near collision the 3 fillies sat up there big eyes darting around looking for whom they had nearly hit. Dash was now standing a few feet away glaring at them with a look that simply said of course it be you. Scootaloo, Sweetie Bell, and Applebloom all looked back with their faces pure red from blushing so hard. After a few seconds of this awkward silence Both sides decided that it should be broken.
At the same instant Dash and all three crusaders spoke up their words impossible to understand. Dash raised a hoof to quiet the fillies and looked at Scootaloo. “Hey Scoots now just where are we off to in such a rush?” she stated calmly despite nearly being run down a few moments before.
Scootaloo spoke first “we're off to get cutie marks” the little orange Pegasus exclaimed with the utmost enthusiasm. Already completely forgotten was the fact that she had almost run over her idol.
Dash turned and faced the whole group “so what adventure you on today girls?”
Sweetie Bell piped up “we are going for our exploration marks!”
“YEA we need to see every part of ponyville as fast as possible!” Applebloom interrupted.
“You know if you go around that fast you’ll miss more than you see, things will just pass you by.” Dash said with a cheerful smile.
Scootaloo asked “when did you get so wise Dash?” while jokingly nudging Dash with her hoof.
All Dash could do was laugh at this “ha-ha what an awesome pony like myself can’t have some wise moments every now and then?” giving Scootaloo a glaring smile.
“eerrrmm….well” Scootaloo stammered
“Don’t worry yourself squirt, you guys better get back to exploring.” And with a friendly smile “also don’t run anypony else over.”
“OOOKKK…. CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS EXPLORERS GO AGAIN.” The three excentric fillies shouted in unison.
As the Crusaders quickly stormed off, Dash turned to the gingerbread building with its sweet smelling aroma still assaulting her nostrils. The structure a light brown color with cream trim was always a hub of business. As Dash entered there were about 5 ponies waiting to be served. As she waited in line Dash wondered what to get “such a great day why not indulge myself?” As her turn came she happily greeted pinkie who now resided at the counter. After greeting pinkie dash ordered a couple muffins, this caused Derpy in the corner to look up and smile at mention of the treats.
With food in hoof Dash moved to a table and sat down to enjoy her breakfast. Now with a lapse in customer’s pinkie bounced over to her friend. “HI Dashie” she said to the rainbow Pegasus mid bounce.
“Hi pinkie”
“Wait what are you doing here Dashie don’t you got work?” the pink earth pony asked finally slowing in her bounce now residing next to her friend.
“Oh work yea things are slow today so I got the day off.” Dash said through a bite of muffin.
“ReallythatsgreatwhatyougonnadohughughughwellthatdosentmatterjustaslongasitsFUN!” pinkie said never failing to impress Dash with her lung capacity.
“Pinkie?” a shout from the back of the shop stopped the pink pony from continuing their conversation.
“aww looks like I got to go dashie.” Her hair deflating a bit but she soon rebounded literally as she somehow bounced off the ceiling into the back waving bye to Dash as she went.
With her breakfast concluded Dash left sugarcube corner and trotted around town waving to passersby. After a while of her trot she decided with this spare time what better to do than extended training. Giddy at the idea she open her wings and with a few flaps she was off toward ponyville field. The sky’s where a bright blue today Celestia had outdone herself, there was also a perfectly cool breeze blowing through the clouds. Dash taking note of this thought “perfect day for this”.

Twilight had finished packing her things into her suitcases for her abrupt trip to Canterlot. During her packing she had thought of what little she could do for the princesses but Celestia’s tone in the letter just affirmed the seriousness of the situation. Her room was fairly small carved out from the inside of a tree like the rest of the library. She was currently sitting on her bed waiting a little allowing her thoughts to wander. “what could it have been could Discord be back, can’t be Nightmare Moon what else could give off something that would get the two most powerful ponies in equestria so worried?” the chiming of the clock to indicate the time of noon pulled twilight from her thoughts. “Best get going then” she said to the empty room cause spike was off at Fluttershy’s cottage.
The walk to the train station was quick and relatively boring or at least Twilight did not notice anything due to her level of focus upon arriving at the station the train was due in less than 5 minutes. Lightly tapping her hooves on the concrete station floor Twilight anxiously waited for the train, and right on time it arrived quickly getting her ticket out she boarded and took the nearest seat to the door. With that she drifted off into thought as the conductor called for all aboard.
As Twilight sat lost in her thoughts many ponies cluttered about the train car it was a simple car just a center isle with rows of cushioned seats back to back on both sides. As the train got moving ponies finally all sat down and began to talk amongst themselves. Twilight just looked out the window conversing with herself in her mind.
“What could it be?” the thought hung in her head for a bit.
“Not discord or nightmare moon that’s for sure, because Luna’s still around and discord is a statue.” she laughed a bit under her breath at the last part.
“Well as far as I know the only pony in a long time that gave off a flare was me….” The thought hung there as things clicked as she remembered Rainbow’s questions earlier that morning.
With that thought she ran it through her head with what other info she was given up till that point. Now with something that could help the princess’s figure out what was going on and a much less sullen mood about her Twilight enjoyed the rest of the ride to Canterlot.
